Is tipping out of control?

  • Has tipping culture in the US gotten out of control? Cornell University Professor of Services Marketing Michael Lynn joins Wealth! as part of Yahoo Finance's Small Business: Big Opportunities special this week to break down when and how you should be tipping next time a screen is turned around asking you to make a gratuity selection.
"In these kinds of counter-service settings, the majority of people are still not leaving tips," Lynn explains of carry-out and coffee shop situations.
He adds that tipping does not help small businesses as much as people think. "What tipping does is it gets price-insensitive customers, people who are willing to pay more than they have to, they're effectively subsidizing the patronage of more price-sensitive customers who aren't willing to pay more than they have to because of tipping," he explains.

I will leave a standard 10% tip. If the service was exceptional, I’ll give 15%. If the options start at 18% when I’m given the bill, I will leave nothing. It’s not like the price of eating out has stayed the same. Moreover, people are doing less and expecting more in the world service. Things have become more automated. Now many places are not accepting cash and at the same time charging a fee for processing your credit card. I avoid these places.

If I order to go and I'm picking up, I NEVER tip. I will write 0%. I feel no shame or guilt about this. In fact, i feel entitled to an apology from the business for asking me to tip. If I'm eating at a restaurant and someone is serving me food, then I tip generously, so I only eat out once or twice a year (when i can afford it); for the other times I just pick up my own damn food.

1:42 ok... So what about the receptionist? Your doctor? Your lawyer? They provide service.
    How about those UPS deliverymen?

I’m not tipping if I have to stand on my feet to order the food unless I’m placing a catering order.

I rarely tip for counter service to-go orders (maybe $1); once I sit down I feel obliged to tip.

Question is not how tipping helps bussiness. It should be - how much it is costing me, the consumer.

If it's not tipping, then it's donations.

"I don't know if a tip is warranted for SELF SERVICE"
My God these people are so far gone. Yes, Please Tip yourself for your service you provided to yourself, By giving it to the establishment owner. I've just got a sudden urge to open a self-service fast food establishment in the US.
PS : Imagine you've just won a lawsuit against you and your $400/hour lawyer that's billing you for 250 hours pulls a tablet out of his briefcase and asks for a 18%-25% tip.

Do away with tipping. It really is getting out of hand. Plus, no one reports it on their taxes. If we are to keep it then there should be reforms about it. All tips should go to the who should then put it in their employees paychecks so that it's taxed properly.

It is completely out of control. My wife was asked for a tip because she bought a bottle of coke from a small stall.... the employee just grabbed the bottle and the screen displayed 25% tip. You can go **** yourself.

In the bars its gratuity and a tip..WTH!
It's just and excuse not to pay employees. That's pathetic. Why go into business if you gonna treat people like that then you expect customers to trust your food. The problem is with business owners is the same problem we're having with engineers. They're acting like they got a job I don't want to make things work anymore. A business owner is a leader. Leaders make things work. And what doesn't work you make political. America needs to get back to basics and get away from all of this we need to scale up. Everybody wants to be a conglomerate now. It's all about buy low and sell high. That methodology should only apply to the highest quality at the lowest price. Businesses can achieve that through efficiency. It should not only be what they can eliminate to cut costs. America has become trash in business mindset.
It's just flat out greed and it's a virus mentally. Nobody wants to do the work anymore they just want to look good at doing the work. Restaurant owners nowadays just want to take selfies on how they're running a business instead of running it. The corporate mindset is destroying this country.

So what you’re saying is the customer is subsidizing the Business Owner. America is a terrible country now. New America will be a lot better.
