  • Ran into some issues while building this. Mostly due to a low quality flash drive I was trying to use for esxi. Once I get it fully running the next step is to install TrueNAS, pfSense, PiHole, and Windows 10 VMs. Specs of this build:
    Single Xeon E5-2609 v3 1.9GHz 6 core
    64GB DDR4 memory
    Perc H330
    480GB Intel SSD
    Four 2TB SAS HDDs

      @@jfkastner I need to make time to figure out pfsense and pihole. Idrac has been acting a little goofy though. I think it needed to be reset after the update.

    Did you stick with esxi? I've fallen in love with proxmox over the past couple years.

    • @computersales
      @computersales  9 місяців тому

      Yeah. I like how easy it is to manage esxi. No CLI necessary.

    I bought one of these used, but I could not install Windows 2022 on bare metal due to issues with the Perc RAID Card. I installed Proxmox and everything worked well. Note, VMWare wants $500 dollars a year (more than 16 physicals CPUs).

      Esxi has a core limit of 8 per vm, but I'm not aware of a core limit for the server if that is what you meant. Otherwise I'm not aware of a single server that has more than 8 sockets for CPUs.

      @@computersales You are correct, I meant more than 16 cores. I have been happy with ProxMox. I was able to set up ZFS with disk mirroring.

      @@timdion9527 I should learn proxmox one of these days. Just trying to work with esxi since it is more common in large datacenters

    The excitement, passion, enthusiasm, and energy in this man's voice has me sooo very hyped for this video. He brings all of that together combined with an extremely dull and unexciting layout, length of time spent describing each part, the thought process behind them, why he got the server in the first place, why he plans to sell it, why building it out so cheaply, make a video at all? I feel sorry for this R430. No love.

      I haven't officially finished the project but the video of where it went is up. 😁

    Did the R430 require RAID controller cross-flash to IT mode for TrueNAS install?

    • @computersales
      @computersales  Рік тому

      I let the raid controller do the work and virtualized TrueNAS in ESXi. I just gave TrueNAS a virtual drive basically. Otherwise looks like you may have to flash firmware depending on your setup.

    When it comes to replacing the optical drive the only cables i have availabile seem to be 2 sata cables. Where is your power cable coming from for the ssd your installing on the board. Stupid question but i am bit baffled as mines refurbished and came with no optical drive

    • @computersales
      @computersales  Рік тому +1

      You should have a SATA cable, and a mini SATA power cable. The mini SATA power cable will look like a SATA cable, but it will have a black and red wire coming out of it. The both run off the motherboard.
