Will be playing this at my dads funeral on the 2nd of Aug. My dad loved the sea. He died of lung cancer on the 8th of July 2021 in hospital. May God rest his soul, from the seas of life. Amen.
So, sorry to hear this Lorna. The cycle of life is hard for all us. But l believe there is more to life than many may think. There is a designer, or God. If one looks at the complex nature of how our body works internally. Take cortisol for instance. There is no way this vital harmone could have accidentally evolved. It is inconceivable that a superior mind, or being did not create this life saving harmone. Without it the human race would not have survived. I am going through a tough time at present. I am 67, and recently had a cancer scare. And spent 10 weeks in hospital. I am still not fully recovered. So take heart - we are not alone. Back to the great " Onedin Line." It was very popular in Ireland. I am Irish, and l can tell you that Irish people were glued to there TV sets minus the remote control. Lol. Peter Gilmore was a fine actor, and as you know was in many of the " Carry On," movies. The series and cast will never be forgotten. And the haunting theme by Katchaturian was so appropriate. Take care. Life is precious.
I just heard this in a store today and was immediately transported back to a very young child and a feeling of deep melancholy. It's taken me all day to remember where I heard it.
I was 4 years old by that time but this music was in my ears and my mind for decades. Finally after all this time I found the movie and the soundtrack . I found inside of me a mix of emotions : joy of remembering this and sad of the times passed by !
Same, born the year it was released. The opening theme will be with me for life, I presume my parents watched it or maybe when we were at our grandparents, no idea but remember it as clear as day.
I watched this series as a young kid (~7YO) almost 50 years ago... and it still sends shivers down my spine. It was then broadcast in black-and-white, and much that I know on Britains rule of the seas came from this series. The strange thing I learned 4 decades afterwards is that the theme (Khachaturians' Spartacus - here directed by the composer with the Vienna philharmonic orchestra) has absolutely nothing to do with either Britain or the Sea --- yet in my mind it will remain connected forever. Genius of selecting the theme... I think not too many knew the music before the Onedin line series too...
Is it really him conducting the VPO? I do think the interpretation is fantastic - I was assuming it was the LPO having a particularly good day after too much to drink. At any rate, it sounds way way above anything average, even above normal BPO.
Watched this at the time with my dad, we both loved it (and occasionally mum!). Dad was a keen sailor and in the immediate post-war era in UK skippered an old Pilot ketch smuggling contraband from France to the UK - it had a double bottom, he and his crew were never caught. He emigrated to Tasmania in 1949, subsequently meeting my mum, also a £10 pound pom in Hobart in 1950. In the early 1970s I recall visiting the then decrepit hulk of the 'Polly Woodside' barque in Melbourne with dad before her great restoration, even in her sad state, there was a magic about her. Dad continued to sail throughout his life at any opportunity with a few boats passing through his ownership. Fond memories.
One of the Greatest pieces of Music EVER COMPOSED.....THANK YOU Mr Khachaturian !.....also enjoyed the series as a child....watching it with my father who was a Sea Fisherman....Great days.
OMG......How amazing it was everything.......my childhood with this Sunday's serial movie.......when my mother finish baking applepie just 5 min before start at Romania TV this movie 5.10 pm Sunday.....all family.......all neighbors was in front of black-white TV.........Where are You, my Childhood?!.......
Back on NZ TV as of April 2021. I loved this series & still do. Drama, romance. Not as some of us would prefer it. But what a love & bonding that grew. So beautiful.
Sorry for your loss. My late mum loved this. I was thinking of her and the music as I woke up this morning. A few minutes later I turned on the radio and it was playing. Goosebumps. xx
If that intro music doesn't get goosebumps every time. Perfect musically representation of a sail unfurling, filling with the wind and the ship going up and down with that horn signalling the rythym. That is my take anyway.
It's actually a representation of the love between two proletarian slaves rebelling against their Roman masters, but never mind... That Khachaturian, eh?
Yet the composer never intended this... pure genius of the series makers, and perfect attachment. The goosebumps are there even after 50 years, when I saw the series first on TV in Israel....
1971 was a good year for fantastic music like this. Walkabout came out the same year which was made even more memorable by John Barry's brilliant score.
This is it! There are many version of Aram Katchaturian's Adagio on you tube, but none other plays it so softly and lovely as this orchestra. Thank you for putting it on you tube. This tune is engraved into my soul
My father loved the Onedin line. He was a pilot in the RAF. He spent a lot of his youth in Scarborough and said that if he hadn't been a pilot he'd have been a sailor. My Dad died at the age of 53, suddenly on Thursday 25th August 1978. On the Sunday the Onedin Line was playing on BBC1. I sat on the stairs and cried my eyes out listening to this beautiful music. Strong, caring and beautiful, just like my Dad.
This is just fantastic and it inspires me so much in my own writing and composing. This theme is just so brilliant and the musical dialogue between the whole orchestra is just magnifique
😉 My dad used to watch this all the time too mate. He was a safety inspector for Thames Water and he said he loved to cycle around their huge water treatment works whistling this tune.
Boxing Day 2020, just seen Peter Gilmore in a Carry on Film on tv. Came here to listen to the music from the Onedin Line, which I remember watching in my teens.
We played this at my grandfathers funeral yesterday. My grandfather worked on big container ships and went allmost all over the world. He was 13 days short of celebrating his 91st birthday. He will forever be missed and looking at footage like this brings me close to him
This is on in the mornings UK Freeview Talking Pictures Channel. I'm far too young to have watched the original showing of it, but I love it nonetheless. Particularly because John Thaw is in certain episodes but mostly because I love this theme song.
I remember the dread and fear I used to get on a Sunday evening as a kid when I heard the opening theme of this. I knew I was in for an hour of unrelenting and mind numbing boredom.
Back in my childhood. Good memories, and a great tv series!😍💞 I remember i white i love whith Peter Gilmore, and Jessica Benton where my idol, she was so beatyful 💟💃
Adagio from spartacus we watched this as a 👪 family 1970,s to 1980,s I,m positive the boat was a clipper? Could be wrong they were used for transporting tea from the west indies
They don't make boats like that anymore. Shame, really. Everything had a purpose, everybody a place. Nowadays(I'm sounding old) it's all automatic, electronically controlled, and soulless.
Will be playing this at my dads funeral on the 2nd of Aug. My dad loved the sea. He died of lung cancer on the 8th of July 2021 in hospital. May God rest his soul, from the seas of life. Amen.
May he Rest In Peace.
Bless you
Bless u I’m sat with my mum in hospital playing her this she’s not got long left x dad was a lone yaughtsman Sunday night was this

feel sorry for your lost. be strong.
I remember as a very small child this music always made me really emotional. I just listened to it again after many years and it made me cry.
Yes, I do too, I was only very small when this was on television. It evoked a feeling of home and feeling secure. I was very lucky.
❤🌻🫂
I just heard this in a store today and was immediately transported back to a very young child and a feeling of deep melancholy. It's taken me all day to remember where I heard it.
One of my earliest memories. Watching this on TV with mum and dad.
Aww same here.

Same too. Happy memories watching this with my late grandad.
Saw This with my mother as a Young girl . We could not talk to her when This was on . ❤️
Have just watched the whole series again after many years and thoroughly enjoyed it all. The music is magic.
Me too. I watched all 91 episodes for the second time. There is a pilot episode too, from 1970. It still exists somewhere.
Watched this at the time with my dad, we both loved it (and occasionally mum!). I am 61 now but use to watch this with my mum and dad, just stopped by to reminisce… love this music
Beautiful!
I remember was 9 years old, waching this, 1979,the music were magic!
Same age as me, then. I remember the music and have played this at the amateur orchestra (second violin) when an adult in the early 90s!
It was shown in Romania? :0
@12pusu , I'm happy us "evil capitalists" gave you poor sods something to enjoy stuck behind the iron curtain :-)
Ahh, the good times !
@@trespire funny how you put evil capitalists in quotation marks.

@@anonb4632 He probably re-used his marine theme for a ballet. But the dancers dance still like sails unfurling!
This isnt the original...its been changed...i claudius is gone..yiutube re shuffle
Yet the composer never intended this... pure genius of the series makers, and perfect attachment. The goosebumps are there even after 50 years, when I saw the series first on TV in Israel....

Dad watched this every episode.

My parents used to watch The Onedin Line, I hated the show but loved the music over the credits!
i hated it back in the day.. being young, it felt boring, however i love it now.
I am currently watch the re-run again on tv, one of the greatest series made for TV by the BBC in their hey day.
einfach nur Gänsehaut - vielen lieben dank an TeeVees Greatest
I came here to mention how I remember this from my childhood. But it seems most of us came here for that :).
A Terrific Series
Being From Liverpool It reminds Me Of The port History
The Onedin Line and Blake's 7 are the probably the most memorable and best ever BBC tv themes.
I didn't like the Blake's 7 theme, either in childhood or adulthood, because of the horrible and frightening ending!
I was a little kid with big teeth sailing small boats when this showed aired.
Music: Spartacus Adagio by Aram Khatachaturian.
Genius - I was under the misapprehension it was a random whistle of Ronnie Ronalde orchestrated by Roger Whitaker. Thanks for enlightening us.
"The Wind Blows Free" - No fart jokes now! I haven't seen this in many a year. My parents used to watch it.
I wish they would digitise this program its been made so well in the 1970s and is educational of days past
Yes yes yes, this is the correct version I remember.
Wow this gets me every time. It's a wonder no words were put to this fantastic piece of music.
Boxing Day 2020, just seen Peter Gilmore in a Carry on Film on tv. Came here to listen to the music from the Onedin Line, which I remember watching in my teens.
The music is from the composer Aram Khachaturian, Adagio from his ballet Spartacus.
Brilliant opening strings. Love the theme tune.👍
Loved this series. Our families faviouite growing up.
Reminds us of when I joined the Metropolitan Police in 1972. We watched the Onedin Line then I left to travel to Hendon |Police College .
Brings tears to my eyes whenever I see and hear 😢
Well, this takes me back.
We played this at my grandfathers funeral yesterday. My grandfather worked on big container ships and went allmost all over the world. He was 13 days short of celebrating his 91st birthday. He will forever be missed and looking at footage like this brings me close to him
This is from the Ballet Spartacus and was the originally called Adgio Of Spartacus and Phrygia. The Ballet is full of great music. Wonderful theme.
This is on in the mornings UK Freeview Talking Pictures Channel. I'm far too young to have watched the original showing of it, but I love it nonetheless. Particularly because John Thaw is in certain episodes but mostly because I love this theme song.
I believe that my father made the 3rd mast to the soren Larsen in the late 1970s in Colchester Essex uk.....
It was docked at the Hythe, I remember seeing it when I was about 12
Well, if you mean the three-masted barque in the beginning that's definitely the "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" and not the "Søren Larsen".
I simply can't believe this is the only original soundtrack on the endless f4cking youtube!
:(
I remember the dread and fear I used to get on a Sunday evening as a kid when I heard the opening theme of this. I knew I was in for an hour of unrelenting and mind numbing boredom.
Hmmmm my fear was that the next day was school!
dont watch it
I used to spend a lot of time in Devon in 1970s and probably saw them filming at Dartmouth I was in my teens 1971-78.
The should remake this, I loved that period and shipping was such a big part of the period.
fantastic
Wonderful piece of music
Qué música más majestuosa, me encanta y emociona.
Majestic
Beautiful...
I love this Serie when I was a child and the music 🎶 wonderful!! I love the most engl. Series
It's me cry too
Back in my childhood. Good memories, and a great tv series!😍💞 I remember i white i love whith Peter Gilmore, and Jessica Benton where my idol, she was so beatyful 💟💃
This music is actually classical music, the Adagio from Spartacus by Aram Kachajerien
The Soren Larsen, which eventually ended up being based in Auckland, NZ and then Sydney, OZ
Well, if you mean the three-masted barque in the beginning that's definitely the "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" and not the "Søren Larsen".
Foarte frumos serialul lam vizionat în anii de școală primara
Thank you James Onedin by ABBA.
Wasn't this series exported to a lot of Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War ?
I think one of the ships sank in the 80s with some boys onboard who were just training. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Epic music .
After listening/watching, I have a strange urge to change my name to Warleggan or such like.
up there with the themes from black beauty, flambards and tells of the unexpected
Early 2000s on zbc used to be great 👌
Adagio from spartacus we watched this as a 👪 family 1970,s to 1980,s
I,m positive the boat was a clipper? Could be wrong they were used for transporting tea from the west indies
How interesting....clips from the tv sound wise...inferior but mixed with music from soundtrack...or original album..
At a time when men of the sea proliferated. Too many men of the land now...
I feel sea sick.
i feel homesick
Aram Khachaturian would have loved it!
Qué música, me emocióna.
durn ............. woulnya knowit - - library NO SOUND - - you all can enjoy it for me
Schitterend!
