I think people need to learn more about Home Theater Setups.Nothing else will match it at home.
I actually find it weird that Netflix sound muffled in my Atmos soundbar. But Amazon Prime, Disney+, and others sounded great. Maybe this feature will help get better sound for Netlfix. Thanks man.
I hope so too!
Thanks for explaining this, with all these different formats things are getting overly confusing. If an A/V expert like you has issues getting it to work imagine the normal lay person. Curious as to what you think of the Spatial Audio while using a good pair of headphones
It’s actually pretty immersive when I’m listening to an official product that supports true “Spatial Audio” like my AirPods Pro, watching on my iPhone or AppleTV 4K. Then it’s pretty wild, but no bottom end (cuz you definitely need a subwoofer to get the full effect). But this Netflix Spatial Audio - being optimized for only 2-channel playback - is just okay. I’m sure it’ll get better, or maybe another company will make improvements upon it, but for now it’s just okay. 😄
@@ealanosbornewhat is my video file has dolby atmos audio but home theater support only 5.1 Pcm via hdmi...
Do my android tv able to support surround sound if it has sound setting to pcm output only....
@@MandeepSingh-hn4jd Atmos is only compatible with bitstream audio, not PCM. 😕
Im amazed Netflix havent teamed up with a soundbar company to sell 3.1 bars with a couple months free premium access. That centre channel is key. Without it dialogue gets lost in the other sounds.
I made a few upgrades to my HT setup this weekend. I was able to add my 2 rear atmos speakers and I bi-wired my B&W front towers. Wow, what a difference. Now running 7.2.4. Love it. Great video as always EO.
Whoa! Nice upgrades! 🤘
Do you enable spatial or run ATMOS ?
Years ago Bose had a system called 321 it was really good for it’s time had 2 speakers and a sub it tricked you and had sound all around you I think it was way better then most sound bars today
I had Netflix premium up to two weeks ago with a demon dhts216. I could listen to spatial audio through the soundbar but it still sounded like ordinary stereo sound to me
I wonder what the different would be between a "Dolby Atmos" soundbar vs spatial audio on a soundbar
Atmos is still superior. Spatial Audio is mainly just for those without soundbars and AVRs, to improve their sound quality as well.
@@ealanosborne Clear!! Thanks fpr your feedback. I suppose I am alright with my Samsung HW-Q950T soundbar.

I just joined the minority and there is no turning back. I'm glad Netflix is enhancing two channel audio for those that use it though.
Congrats on joining the minority! 😁🤘
instead of the klipsh 2.1 pro media, why not recommend the logitech z623's? Usually find them on sale for around 100$, and they are known to sound louder.
Yeah sure, those too! That was just what popped in my head first when making the video, but I hope anyone who sees it would do their own due diligence and purchase the best 2.1 system to suit their needs. 🥳
What about headphones? It's better than the apple tv + iPods combo? If static directly in front of the tv.
Being using my ps5 with 3d audio for a while to watch movies from streaming service and Blue Ray. When using my not premium Sennheiser bt450 connected using a usb to Bluetooth (with aptx) dongle the sound field at ear level is very good. Everything needs to be configured for PCM audio. The sound on the ps5 and also the sound on the Blu Ray player of the ps5 (have different configuration options).
No, listening to AirPods through an AppleTV 4K is still better immersion. But if you have a 2.0 or 2.1 channel setup, this new Spatial Audio should improve those modest systems. 🤷♂️
Ok. It's for speakers, i thought it may be for headphones. Miss opportunity 🤷🏻♂️
@@Elias-ti4te Well, if you’re not in the Apple ecosystem, and just listen through normal headphones, it’ll still be better than the previous non-Spatial Audio streams. 🙌
Guess I won’t see it as already on premium plan for Vision and Atmos content for the 5.1.2 in the living room. Bit reflective but hard to tell with the AVR on -12
Spatial audio is enabled automatically when watching a compatible TV show or movie using stereo audio.
The Netflix UA-cam video, not seeing the link. Thanks for this info on your video. 😊
ua-cam.com/video/0RMh2LnJeGY/v-deo.html
A bit strange. Can only bring up atmos in the tv settings no matter how I change the settings. PCM does not exist in the Philips setup.
Huh…weird! 🤷♂️
I'm not expecting a lot from Sennheiser Consumer since the Swiss buyout. Too many beancounters looking to post numbers that will make shareholders happy.
Since I only watch movies/content using my iPad Pro, and Apple was the first (and I thought the only ones) using the term “Spatial Audio,” I just thought that Netflix had finally implemented Apple’s Spatial Audio into their mobile app when I started seeing the logo next to title names. HBO Max and others have had it implemented for a while and what I’ve deduced is that when a movie is offered in Dolby Atmos, the HBO Max app utilizes Apple’s Spatial Audio technology to emulate the Dolby Atmos signal using stereo headphones (AirPod Pro Gen 1 in my case). You Also have the option through your device settings to switch between regular stereo, Fixed Spatial Audio, or Head-Tracked Spatial Audio when available. I use the Fixed option 99.9% of the time because it sounds incredible. Head-Tracked is a bit of a gimmick to me but it’s cool how it works nonetheless. Anyway, to find out now that Netflix’s Spatial Audio is completely different from what I thought it was is highly misleading. I don’t understand why they would go through the trouble of having to sound-mix all of these titles in a new audio format and add to the confusion. I guess the only reasoning I could make is that people watching Netflix on non-iOS mobile devices can now experience something similar to Apple’s Spatial Audio, but still, why the same name? In my opinion, It shouldn’t be offered on the TV app or external streaming devices at all because the audio setup you have in your home is your circus to manage. Weird to see it pop up on the TV app only when Netflix thinks you need it instead of being able to toggle it yourself. I’m not a fan of them trying to pass this off as something it’s not.
True, it is a bit confusing for those (like you and me) who are already in Apple’s ecosystem, and have already had experiences with “spatial audio.” I’m leaning towards the reality that the rest of the world is still largely NOT in the Apple ecosystem (Android, etc), so it’s catering to those who are still listening on their TV speakers, laptop speakers, or non-Apple headphones or earbuds. But you’re right…it’s confusing, so hopefully my video clears the air on that just a little? 🤷♂️👍
Limiting Dolby to just their premium plan (which costs more than THREE TIMES the regular plan here in India) is absolutely ridiculous. People paying more will always pay more for the premium plan just for the 4K quality alone. They should've made Atmos standard across all plans.
I agree, since audio signal bandwidth is MUCH less than 4K video bandwidth 🤷♂️
I'm a little confused. If I am already getting ATMOS on my 7.1 system, do I need spatial audio? Would it improve over Atmos? Is there a remarkable difference ? I understand spatial mostly works for mobile devices and not for home theatre systems?
Right. It’s specifically optimized for those NOT listening on a home theater system.
Far more wiser to choose a movie for its soundtrack then choose a movie for it's way it's audio has been dispersed!
I have a 9.1.4 ATMOS system, and am on the Premium plan, but since spacial audio launched, I no longer see ATMOS as a sound format on any programs - I just see 5.1 now, and when playing those back, I get standard Dolby Digital. The TV settings haven't changed, although I did set the TV to PCM to verify Spacial Audio was available (it was), but as it's limited to 2.1 setups, I'm not that interested. So, right now, I've no idea how to get ATMOS back in Netflix!
I have 5.2.4 Atmos system. My Roku stick is connected directly to the TV (I do not use Roku for anything Atmos / DTS but for TV speakers only) and I see Spatial Audio only.
My AppleTV box is connected to Receiver and Receiver to TV via ARC. AppleTV uses all Receiver features like Atmos or DTS etc.
The same show on Roku to TV to TV speaker is Spatial Audio.
The same show on AppleTV to Receiver to Surround system is Atmos.
So I suspect if you are using the in TV Netflix app, it is not interpreting to the Netflix app as it is Atmos capable or Atmos bypass. Many old TVs do not have surround format bypass (mine included) from native apps. Get an AppleTV or something, connect to your receiver and use that for apps.
Sounds like a glitch to me try putting the TV sound settings on passthrough then delete Netflix app then reinstall and maybe that my fix it. Good luck
Is it spatial audio if I select stereo when watching netflix with spatial format? Or I am able to listen it only if the spatial audio logo appear?
My understanding is that it’s only Spatial Audio if you see the badge/logo.
Do you think apple should allow you to buy and connect multiple HomePods to create a true home theater system
I don’t see why not. Apple would love you to buy two HomePods to create a stereo pair, so why would they be opposed to shelling out more money for more HomePods? 😄 Sure, the software doesn’t support that (yet?), but they would def need to start selling a subwoofer to compete with Sonos, for example.
@@ealanosborne ya it would be like the Sony HT-A9. But would have to somehow integrate a subwoofer. And be able to use the HomePod Minis as ceiling speakers
@@rpiedra74 I could get behind that! 😄
Try the ambeo in headphones and give us your feedback.
Stay tuned… 😉
I can see all the logo like Spatial Audio, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos in Netflix via iPhone 14 pro max
This is great for people using hdmi powered speakers like Klipsch Fives. I’m rocking a 2.1.2 set up so I feel like I can do a good job comparing native Dolby atmos vs using pcm spatial audio with upmixed content in my atmos speakers.
Exactly! 🤘
5.1.2 is the way to go. Edit: Upgrade too 9.1.2! Wow! Dolby Atmos watching Stranger Things is a whole new experience!
Will it make any difference with a 2.1 setup? Or is it better to just use the dts virtual-x upmixer instead?
Might as well try it out! It's supposedly optimized for 2.0 or 2.1 setups, so see how it performs! :)
How about with headphones? Seems like this might just be interesting with you phone playing through IEMs. Obviously, not a 24 channel Atmos substitute, but maybe interesting with IEMs while watching in an airplane over your phone, maybe.
Stay tuned. I just got some wireless headphones I’ll be reviewing just for this very purpose… 🤘
Quick question. I am using a stereo system with Wiim, I want to enjoy Netflix movie,
- which sound shall I choose on Netflix?
- which setting on tv shall I choose? PCM or Dolby?
What stereo system is your Wiim connected to? Usually Netflix can auto-detect what your system can handle, so if it’s stereo, it should automatically output a stereo signal (a.k.a. Sennheiser’s Spatial Audio, if you’re on the top tier plan). But yes, typically you’ll want to choose PCM audio out with a stereo system since Dolby is only necessary for surround sound. 👍
@@ealanosborne thanks for your reply bro.
My Wiim is just connected to a fosi audio v3 (basically a music listening system but due to space concerns I want to enjoy some movie too). Using the cheap Sonny ccss5. Also connected to a Smsl SU1. All stereo system 🙈
@@ealanosborne sorry more question. If I selected 5.1 on Netflix will it only send the left right channel to my stereo system? Or it will emulate a surround?
Well spatial audio mix of content not recorded in stereo mic formation see 3d hair cut vs Netflix spatial using just your headphones...filmmakers will never record in stereo mic formation cause any changes video recording means the whole scene has to be acted out again. Its very unforgiving
*it doesn't compare
The Mad Max initial scene is an amazing suggestion to test more than 2 height channels - thank you
i use 1440 p monitor when i tried netfilix with premium plan. I only get 1080 p quality by default. No option to switch 4k , wat a waste !
So to be clear. I have a Atmos set up. If it says Spacial Audio will I still get Atmos or is it downgrading my sound while upgrading those w Tv speakers?
Yeah, you still want it to have the Atmos badge if you are playing it through a full Atmos system. If you see the Spatial Audio badge, there's something wrong. But if you're just watching on a laptop or tablet, seeing the Spatial Audio badge is a good thing.
@@ealanosborne hmmm. I see the Spacial Audio badge on all the normal Atmos content.
Off topic but how are you getting on with you IOTAVX AVX17. I have Anthem MRX 540 and I am not sure if I should trade it in for the IOATA.
I’ve never experienced the MRX 540 (or any Anthem, for that matter), but I sure do love my IOTA. It really gets my subwoofers going with some deep, articulate and aggressive bass that I had only heard in an actual movie theater before. I didn’t get that same sound from my Marantz SR7015. But against an Anthem? 🤷♂️😬
When watching 6 underground on a Samsung 65 curved tv the spatial audio option does not appear, instead there is symbol AD))).... what's the difference..?
AD))) means audio description for the visually impaired.
@@ealanosborne thanks for the details, looks like the Samsung TV sets are not getting spatial audio... however 2 other devices, Sony Android TV and Xiaomi mobile handset picks it up, the effect is much more prominent on the handset than the tv set
@@Bharat005 Well in the video, I'm using The Frame TV from Samsung, so apparently some Samsung TVs get Spatial Audio...🤷♂
@@ealanosborne The Frame is a more recent model than the one am using.... perhaps the older models cannot pick this
@@Bharat005 Ah, maybe so…
I use Apple TV with stereo HomePods. Can I use spatial audio?
Yes! As long as you’re on their Premium plan
Very honest review...I felt exactly same.
Which I noticed you have a Samsung TV. Which model is that? Are you happy with its passthrough capabilities? Do you also have a PS5?
I don’t have a PS5. 😭 But it the Samsung Frame (2022 Version). It’s the only one my wife wanted in our new house, since it looks like a painting when we’re not using it. 😄 It’s been great so far. My only complaint so far is that the OS can be a little laggy when navigating the menu system. 🤷♂️
Hi Ealan wondering how the Valencia chair is feeling after some used. Currently considering getting a pair for my set up. Excellent reviews as always!
No way am I going back to the couch I had in here. Does that answer your question? 😁🤘
I love how the streaming services call it "Dolby Atmos" sound. I call it neutered Dolby Atmos cuz that's what it is... technically it's really LOSSY Dolby Digital Plus.
The key is that regular HDMI ARC can deliver that "quality"... whereas true Dolby Atmos (like off a Blu-Ray disc) certainly cannot & requires eARC to do so.
I have 3.1.2 samsung dolby soundbar
the sound of cancellation of tons of netflix accounts what does that sounds like in spatial audio? XD
As a premium subscriber watching Netflix with headphones spatial audio on PC and Apple products, it does not work for me. I don’t think people who use this “new feature” truly care about the sound experience 😂. Netflix only wants to use this strategy to attract people to pay more even though they can’t feel the difference at all.
What kind of system do you own?
In my living room? Or in my DIY testing theater?
Will the spatial audio be enabled while using AirPod Pros connected via Apple TV 4K? I know it works for Apple's original content on Apple TV+ but I have never tried it through Netflix.
Pretty sure Apple’s version of spatial audio will work no matter what you’re watching through an AppleTV 4K (as long as spatial audio has been enabled). But I’d definitely try it out on Netflix content too! 🤘
im confused ive had spatial audio on my phone for years
Yeah that’s Apple’s version. This is a Netflix specific version, optimized for watching on laptops, phones and tablets, catering to those who don’t have a Dolby Atmos soundbar or Home Theater System
Netflix adding this so called spatial audio to their premium subscription makes no sense whatsoever; its counter intuitive. Atmos is a different thing altogether as it is a wonderful experience and worth the extra money although Disney plus gives it to you as standard. This beefed up 2.1 experience should be for their main subscribers who don't have a decent setup and would likely encourage them to invest in a good soundbar and then be more likely to upgrade to their premium subscription. Thats how I see it anyway.
True. I think it's just for Premium subscribers right now, but it will slowly roll out to all subscribers. But I agree...they should've made it available to all subscribers at initial launch.
What about Dolby Atmos vs Spacial Audio when listening on a soundbar?
If your soundbar supports Atmos, stick with that. Spatial is really meant to improve audio performance for those without soundbars or AVRs 👍
@@ealanosborne I see, thanks a lot!
I have a standard HD subscription and an AV 5.1 receiver, 5.1 audio with HD TV is good enough for me, the premium subscription is too expensive.
i had a oneodio pro 10(studio dj headophones ) can i be able to enjoy dolby or spatial audio ?
behind... not at all... I laughed at my desk. so funny.
great video. not enough people know about atmos soundbars and all that. stop watching it without decent audio... please lol
so its mean that if my 3.1.2 soundbar get Dolby Atmos, this is better to go with Dolby Atmos on Netflix than Spatial Audio?
Correct. Spatial Audio through Netflix is just to enhance the audio experience for those listening on a 2-channel system or through a phone, tablet or computer that only has 2 speakers. Since you already have a soundbar that supports Dolby Atmos, that will be better than Netflix "Spatial Audio."
@@ealanosborne thankyouuuuuu
is it going to work on samsung q990C soundbar?
No more 3D OLED? ☹️
Eh…maybe. If anyone can bring it back, it would be James Cameron putting pressure on TV manufacturers. And he has that kind of power… 🤷♂️
I did notice a significant difference when using earbuds. I travel a good amount for work and about a week ago I watched Enola Homes 2 on my iPad. Sound was much more immersive and "bigger". Not to confuse bigger with loader.
Yep! I imagine that exact scenario is why Netflix decided to roll this out, so even those without a proper home theater setup can get a more immersive experience.
Yea I forgot to mention that I have a pretty good 5.1.2 setup in my home theater space so I can tell when the mix is top notch.
Bro pls pls pls respond.. but I’m moving into an apartment and I was looking for your recommendation on which Dolby atmos surround sound I should get .. emphasized apartment because I want something that sounds great that the neighbors won’t hate me too much .. wireless would be nice but I’m fine with a wired setup aswell so both options would be greatly appreciated. From the specifications I read online, that soundbar system does not support Dolby Atmos, only Dolby Digital Surround.
@@ealanosborne but its showing and playing atmos in spdif
@@galahadxdThat might just be due to the source, when in fact the soundbar itself isn't actually accepting an Atmos signal. Typically, an Atmos-enabled soundbar will have upward firing speakers that bounce audio off the ceiling, since that's the whole point of Atmos - to include height information.
@@ealanosborne Seems understandable.. Thank you for the clarification..
Through the entire video i could not figure out what is the story/message that you are trying to tell us
Is a narrator voice inside a person!
Just listened to the UA-cam demo win my office with my 2.1 setup (2 Adam Audio T8Vs and 1 JBL LSR 301 10 inch sub) definitely heard a lot more from the Stanger Things clip. However, still nothing like in my home theater. The opening scene of Stranger Things Season 4 with the kid starting behind you and wizing past and throwing the newspaper everywhere is amazing. Also really like the opening scene in The Last of Us Episode 2. Even though I don't have physical overhead speakers (using Klipsch 625FA) there was so much detail up there and really made it feel like I was in the building with them.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s meant to replace Atmos, but it sure is great knowing you don’t need to upgrade anything to experience Spatial Audio. And Adam Audio T8Vs? Dude…jealous. 😁🤘
Your content is always bang on. I love the educational, informative stuff. Unboxing videos and comparisons are being done to death by everyone wanting to be an influencer who gets free tech. Please keep this up.
Additionally, could you examine more about industry standards, trends, where it's headed, etc? Something that has bothered me for a long time is planned obsolescence and a lack of warranty/support. Why can't things just work!? Do you think it's the responsibility of the end user to "learn to use everything"? Or should my Samsung HWQ990B just work with my Hisense 65U8G? Do I need an update on my TV in order for my soundbar to work? SHOULD I need an update for them to work together? Should any of this be legal? Etc, etc, etc.
Thanks again.
Hey thanks! Those are some great questions, too. I think in a nutshell, it’s tough for manufacturers to put so much effort into a product line, knowing technological advancements are happening so quickly nowadays that it would be a waste of their bottom line to spend so much on any given feature or license within their products.
Like with Apple nowadays, having a new M-series chip each year. WTF? The latest and greatest is outmatched and beaten the following year? By its own manufacturer? I don’t understand that logic, yet everyone and their dog is foaming at the mouth for whatever Apple releases. I’m in the Apple ecosystem myself, but I’m def not one of those who upgrades yearly. I hang onto my tech for a good 4-5 years on average. Must be hard to be an electronics manufacturer in these modern times.
But again, thanks for the kind words. I enjoy bringing y’all news of the industry, as opposed to just product reviews. These kinds of videos are more fun to make anyway. 😁🤘
i have a Yamaha receiver 7.1, JBL speakers with a Klipsch 12 sub. it sounds good with everything BUT Netflix. no matter what setting i choose in Netflix or the receiver. Other streamers, i subscribe to, Disney+ and Amazon Prime sound great. Plex and Kodi, both sound great. for some reason Netflix voice audio just doesnt sound right, its as if the voice audio is in all the speakers rather than in just the center, like everything else i play on the system. so the other audios drown out any vocals. its incredibly annoying to the point i never watch Netflix on that system, only on devices with no receiver attached.
That’s super weird! 🤷♂️

Let me tell something you won’t hear it from anyone else:
Good sound quality will make the motion of the picture worse (Stuttering, chubby).
Excuse my English.
That is absolutely not true. I watch a lot of movies with TrueHD Atmos and 4k Dolby Vision, the motion is the same as any other video.
I checked out the Netflix link for the demo on my laptop. It does sound really good. I won't change anything on my Denon 3700 because Atmos is awesome. I watched Blade Runner 2049 and Dune on 4K blu ray. WOW! Oh as for my upgrades, thanks for the great videos you did explaining how to do both.
Denis Villanueve sure knows how to do Atmos in his movies. 🤘
If already playing Atmos, do you need spatial ?
This gimmick of using 2 normal speakers to produce immersive sound has been tried by various companies for more than 20 years...
Yea I dint like it, I got no back surrounds
Interesting Ealan. I have a chromecast, and netflix pushed an update which removed surround formats... i only had to reset my chromecast audio format (not TV), and it reset the spatial audio. I think it depends on your media device. But I will say, i watched Stranger Things S4 in atmos, and its a major gamechanger. Totally different experience from watching on a tv or soundbar.
I seen this is it worth an upgrade
If you watch primarily through laptop speakers or have a nice 2 channel setup, it could be worth the Premium Plan price. It does add...something, but it's not like GAME changing, you know? :)

Windows 10/11 supports spatial audio, both Windows Sonic for Headphones and Dolby Atmos for Headphones (paid). Personally I have Dolby Atmos for Headphones because it comes free from my gaming laptop. It converts ANY headphones to have Dolby Atmos enabled capabilities.
It's configurable on Windows Sound settings, it's not enabled on default.
When I'm using it on Netflix, it's noticable for me that's spatial enough, and immersive.
Thanks for the information
Yes I have full atmos setup and did not know Netflix had atmos
Go back and watch stuff now! 😄🤘
Bc before covid 😂😂👏👏
So ... If you're one of the minority who run everything through an AVR with Atmos capable surround, like me, then this is a non-starter and useless?
Correct. This is improving audio for those listening on phones, tablets, and TV speakers. But it applies to you if you’re on vacation or on-the-go, I guess. 🤷♂️😁
Bruh! Spoiler Alert!
Spatial audio is a scam
What a joke that video is. Special audio is mostly for those with headphones and specially Apple headphones.
🤣🤣🤣
Man, with all due respect, that was boring!
Spatial is not that special.
Ha! 👍
Are Netflix still going to use Dolby Atmos? I hope so.
Of course. This Spatial Audio feature is for those without a compatible Atmos soundbar or AVR.
