When I had gone out to Newfoundland to visit my aunt I refrained from using that terminology altogether because I wasn't sure who would find that word to be offensive and who would find that word to be endearing and I didn't want to get my head chewed off by anybody. So I kind of understand Rick and Alan's POV about being stigmatized by the use of that word.
I said to my mom "It's as good as calling a black person a n*gger." My mom said, "Some people find that word to be endearing." I said "Rick Mercer said "that's enough" and Alan Doyle, from Great Big Sea, will refuse to go out on the stage if he's introduced that way."
So, folks DON'T USE THE WORD NEWFIE IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW SOMEBODY WILL REACT TO IT.
