I want to say that this new knowledge is REALLY helpful for me as someone new to Commander with a small amount of cards and money. I didn't know this existed and was only a small price and a higher quality official format to play online. Thanks so much Professor for this video.
As some of the comments on this video describe, Tabletop Simulator is a great way to play commander as well. $20 game, you can subscribe (for free) to Steam workshop tables and import any card/deck to play at no additional cost. It's easy to learn and set up, and only $20.
Tabletop simulator is still my preferred way to play online commander. No cost for cards, alternate art, custom tables and backgrounds, and voice chat if you want
This, it's so good. New releases are almost immediately available, no cost if you own tabletop sim (cheap if you buy it on sale), you can import basically any decklist you can find, test precons, scripted tables with automatic shuffling/mulligans. Alternate art like you said, just make your deck on archideckt or something, select all your art, import the deck automatically, it's there in 5 seconds. It's basically virtualized paper magic. I like to play irl, but some of my friends live in other parts of the world, and it's easier to convince someone new to buy paper decks and play irl if they can try the game out without a major investment.
When it is hard to find a group of local players, this is highly useful information. Thanks for the video. If however you can find local groups, take that route. Its much better to me. May get stinky from time to time, but its so much more worth it to build real friendships. You the reader have the ability, believe in yourself.
As many people have mentioned, Cockatrice is a fantastic option. It's easy to set up, has a plethora of options for customization, and unlike Tabletop Simulator is 100% free as well as gets you straight into Magic. You don't have to go through their janky setup. Spelltable is also really good but unless you are streaming your feed to someone else and vice versa, you only get to see one aspect of the board. There are tournaments that allow Spelltable as well as tournaments through Cockatrice. They aren't even hard to find.
I'll say TTS advantage over Cockatrice is that it is a TABLETOP Simulator. Anything from MTG to 40k can be played on it. And while not free it does go on sale pretty often such as right now thanks to being on steam. But hey its 20€ for something that has given me at least over a thousand hours of playtime total. That's honestly worth the price of admission if you ask me. I'd argue also that if you don't host the game, it gets you quicker into the magic because all you need is the deck importer and that the host can get set up and then all you do is ctrl+c, ctrl+v, click button. And your deck with all the tokens and everything else you might need is there. Including potential side and maybe board cards that can be there to swap out cards if you want to lower your decks power level, or increase it. And all you needed to do besides making the deck on a place like moxfield or Archidekt is install it. Both are pretty good ways of playing it though. (I do prefer TTS because honestly I can have my decks look the way I want without any work on my end outside of picking how I want the cards to look on Archidekt.)
Cockatrice's interface is absolutely atrocious(very similar to mtgo's lmao) compared to TTS's mtg scripting, as cockatrice is made for many card games and the TTS map is specifically designed for MTG, and can host up to 8 players without the restriction of only being tied to a window, as someone that's played both it's not even close, spend the 20$(10$ on sale right now) for tts and never look back.
This was perfect timing Prof! I just moved several states away from my usual commander group and we were bummed about missing our in person games. We knew there were some alternatives for online Commander, like Tabletop Simulator, but this looks WAY easier and more cohesive. Thank you!!

Cockatrice is my favorite for playing with friends! Free sandbox that lets you do whatever I have modern, pauper, legacy, standard, commander and CEDH decks on it. It’s clunky at first, but once you get down the shortcuts, it’s so nice. It’s also where I test decks out.
the shortcuts are easy to master, and thankfully they are customizable. I test every single one of my decks there before buying the proxys to play them physically. It saves me so much money, and helps me improve my decks a lot. I just love it

I'm an Arena player and watching this video made me think Arena was made by someone only interested in profit and MTGO is made by people who actually loves the game and wants to be more available.
Thank you for this! I have been trying to figure out a way to get back into MTG after seeing so many fun Commander videos on YT and this is just what I need to see. Cheers, Professor!
I'm so glad this video got made! MODO is so scary for so many people (myself included) and I can't think of anyone better than the Prof to deliver this sort of tutorial. I'll have to pick up those bundles this weekend and try and throw a deck together. Wish me luck
Forge is free, open-source, runs on Windows + Mac + Linux + Android, includes every MTG card to date, allows for play against bots & multiplayer, and has an optional adventure mode.
Looking at the official Forge wiki now it says that online multiplayer is still a work in progress and has bugs that will likely prevent you from playing a full game. I use Xmage and have never encountered a bug in multiplayer. But I'll give forge a try for Android use and AI play.
i was waiting for a video like this!!! Magic should really come up with a online commander game so I can play with friends who's far away... Yugioh and pokemon do today, and now I discovered Magic!
didn't knew we had commander and pauper in MTGO. why this isn't in arena. I've tried testing out decks in Arena but there are so many missing cards. Having MTGo as an actual functional and cheaper alternative is incredible. Thanks Prof!
I had never really thought about MTGO because I didn't want to have to pay for paper and digital cards. That is the sole reason that I don't play Arena. My friends and I are new considering MTGO because of this video. Thank you so much for this and everything that you do, Prof. Much love and appreciation.
Thanks for the guide and info, i have an MTGO Account but never considered getting into EDH on it, now i might try. You keep being a pillar of the community prof!
I might give this a try now. I've been to afraid of getting into MTGO and being so far behind anyone else because I wouldn't have any cards. This seems like a really good way to play Magic at home
As someone who hasn't played MTGO since RTR block, I'm not sure how much of those bundles I can take advantage of, but when I get my computer back from the shop I intend to take a look! Thanks for the recommendation, Prof!
When covid started I just built my own program to play MTG over the internet, my playgroup enjoys using it more than the hassel of playing in person as it simplifies a lot of things. It doesn't have any rules enforcement or anything though so it is like playing in a less janky tabletop simulator and requires a lot of trust between the people playing as well as something like discord for voice.
my brother and I play on Cackatrice.... its a totally free game, no need to buy anything, just made your decks with the whole entire card database WOTC provides, and away you go... no video options yet, so you have to type out your turns, but its still a fun time
One thing I would like to add: If you are looking for other commander staples like Mana Crypt/Vault or fetches, you only need ONE copy for ALL decks. There is no need to buy a separate copy for each deck. Learned that the hard way.😅
I’ve been playing magic for over 10 years, my group aims to meet once per week, but life gets in the way and we tend to meet more once per month now. I always want to play more commander but Magic Online has always seemed too intimidating! Even after all this time! But not anymore, I’ll definitely be giving it a crack now, thanks Prof 🥳
I don't usually comment on TY videos but i recently got into MTG and have build my first commander deck, and I have been looking up a way online..... like TODAY i was looking this stuff up.... This video has been great ty!
This is really cool to know, last year I went through the steps to access my old MTGO account but didnt know I could play Commander on it nor that I could get a LOT of cards for very little, now I just need to remember the password again hehe
Spell Table is a nightmare to use. It requires such a perfect set of conditions to work. No one in my friend group can get it to work. I have a 4k webcam and it just doesn't matter because it's locked to 720p. No amount of adjusting my lighting or camera position works. It's just a fuzzy mess. We just use Table Top Simulator.
Glad the comments are mentioning Table Top Sim and other free alternatives. Cool that this exists and all but I'll just keep playing on TTS where I can just import every card for free, thanks.
The one key piece of information I was hoping to find here is: how do you actually set up and start a commander game with friends? Where do you go to set up your pod and invite only your friends to it?
Thanks for the videos and the comments, I never heard so many different clients dropped for commander in the comment section before will be checking all of them out.
I've played some commander online. Personally it doesn't feel as fun as in person but I completely understand when people do. Still waiting on that Behind the Campus Video Prof, it's been a few months now. I've been keeping track.
The one thing keeping me from Arena are people purposefully dragging out games because they're losing. I can't imagine how long these commander games would last in this case.
As a side note, I like that he empathizes the fact it is a one time purchase instead of a suscription. Suscription services had really become a problem
As someone who hasn't played MTGO since Arena took off going back to MTGO for commander has felt like far too much of an undertaking knowing just how many cards I would need to pickup to get reasonably in the meta again. I did not know about that $5 collection upgrade pack and knowing about it now makes that seems like much less of an onerous task. Add this one to the list of the many positive videos where prof is acting as an ambassador to magic and doing good for the community
I'll admit, this has me interested in giving MTGO another chance. Last time I tried it, was during Invasion, and back then it felt like it was just a way to make me purchase all my cards twice.
Tabletop is the clear best way to play commander. My friends and I have tried spell table and even with great cameras sometimes it's just impossible to really see the card properly and grasp the full scale of their boards
That's a wild deal! I've played on MTGO for years, and it was sad to see it fall to the wayside due to arena. Arena still has a ton of work to do before I'd even care to come back to it. I might drag a few of my friends back into it too. $45 is impressively cheap, and I love how easy it is to brew on MTGO.
Guys just use moxfield to play test any deck you want, use OBS to create ways to cover your hand and library (when you view it) and to utilize the virtual camera. Point it to your moxfield play tes, then use spelltable and use your virtual camera to play anyone
It would be great to have a video showcasing how to purchase cards which are outside the base 7000 shown here, it's quite complicated the first time you do it!
I wish I could just port my actual commander deck into it without needing to buy cards that I already had to buy physically, if I already have all this than I don't wanna buy whatever I need to in order to play with my buddy's when we don't wanna meet up I would rather stick to facecam game nights
ether tabletop sim for a paid program that also has tons of other uses and games you could play on it, or cockatrice/untap for completely free to use, import your deck list from some place like moxfield and your good to go, cockatrice is my preferred way to play, really easy to use once you start memorizing the many shortcuts and for me and my friend group that are much less experienced its really easy to just take back moves or mistakes as we continue to learn and mess with the system.
I use Cockatrice within my friend group. It's open-source and deck builder is built in. Plus if we swap out the card database with... let's say YuGiOh we can use it for that too. Downside is everything is manual
Keep in mind that passing priority for the remainder of the turn signals to your opponents that you have no plays, something you may not want to do if you still have cards in hand or face down creatures.
As a YGO player its odd to see how Magic lacks a good online player really. MTG Online is usable but it and Cockatrice I just don't find fun to use because the presentation is really lackluster for both. Whilst with Yu-Gi-Oh I'm spoiled for options with Master Duel being a really good official simulator and Yu-Gi-Oh Omega, EDOpro, and even Dueling Nexus being really good fanmade ways to play the game easily, free, and with good presentation.
if you arent going the tabletop simulator route, this is definitely the way to play magic online. Its not free but its pretty affordable and first party so its well supported
Awesome, I live in Philippines and will have to spend sooo much for importing from another country. And not alot of MTG players is also a big disadvantage here, with this I can play whenever I want.
OR you could do all of that for NO COST and have access to EVERY card ever printed by using Cockatrice. I've used that for years and it's a great way to get in games and test decks in every format.
Oh this sounds interesting I’m hyped up I usually just go webcam or untap with friends I’ll have to try online again. I love brawl in arena and this will be great
Personally I still find tabletop simulator to be the best online commander option, though I would be lying if i said that i haven't given MTGO a thought, Tabletop SIm is just a significantly cheaper alternative.
Xmage is an excellent thing, it has literally all the cards, all the formats and a completely done rules engine, as well as all the alternative arts and everything completely for free.
Thank you for this video! Last time I saw MTGO it looked… out of date. This video has convinced me it’s time to transition from expensive paper magic to online 24/7 games!
I prefer untap in, ots basically like playing with webcam (as there is no automisation) except you dont have to shuffle manually or even own any cards.

The one thing keeping me from Arena are people purposefully dragging out games because they're losing. I can't imagine how long these commander games would last in this case.
As a side note, I like that he empathizes the fact it is a one time purchase instead of a suscription.
Suscription services had really become a problem
Excellent video, has been much needed
Cheers!
Downloaded today. Will play with the settings over the next few days!
Just use tabletop simulator to play commander and magic at all , you can use literally any deck for free and very cool to use
Great introduction to the site, and excellent unpacking of all the information 🤘
🐍
Guys just use moxfield to play test any deck you want, use OBS to create ways to cover your hand and library (when you view it) and to utilize the virtual camera. Point it to your moxfield play tes, then use spelltable and use your virtual camera to play anyone
Table top simulator is the number one for sure.
TableTop Simulator is also a very fun choice. There are scripted workshop mods.
It would be great to have a video showcasing how to purchase cards which are outside the base 7000 shown here, it's quite complicated the first time you do it!
You can play Commander using any number of 3rd party programs and STILL use Discord.
No money down. No V bucks bought.
I wish I could just port my actual commander deck into it without needing to buy cards that I already had to buy physically, if I already have all this than I don't wanna buy whatever I need to in order to play with my buddy's when we don't wanna meet up I would rather stick to facecam game nights
Tabletop Simulator is what your looking for. Probably on sale right now for the steam summer sales too so best time to get started.
ether tabletop sim for a paid program that also has tons of other uses and games you could play on it, or cockatrice/untap for completely free to use, import your deck list from some place like moxfield and your good to go, cockatrice is my preferred way to play, really easy to use once you start memorizing the many shortcuts and for me and my friend group that are much less experienced its really easy to just take back moves or mistakes as we continue to learn and mess with the system.
If this was the way wizard annouced the release of commander on Arena it would have been epic, sadly we'll have to keep waiting
Dang, Prof. You talked me into it. I've been unhappy with Arena for some time, and this is so much more fair. And maybe more fun.
try cockatrice, i 110% recommend it
To be honest, I didn't even know about the existence of MTG online. I'll definitely have to try it out
Simple bump for Untap. It's not the most feature rich, but its simple and works.
Xmage is still better tho (open source and all cards are 100% free)
For real, fuck all those scabs in the secondary market
Xmage is fantastic once you get set up but when I started (years ago) there was a very steep learning curve the set up took ages lol.
The only real issue is that the server is soooo unstable, it's really disheartening to lose an hour long game to a random crash.
@C4chorroSa1sicha
I'd rather play on an unstable server, than pay thousands of dollars for a viable devk
@@KillSecureSona But this one is a stable server for only 40 dollars ain't it?
Finally the infomercial that got me
Nice job bringing this to light!
Awesome, I live in Philippines and will have to spend sooo much for importing from another country. And not alot of MTG players is also a big disadvantage here, with this I can play whenever I want.
New Deck (2) (Final) (THIS ONE) is a great 'lil Easter egg
Tabletop Simulator is the way
Hmmmm, I've always preferred to play with the physical cards since I've been collecting them for ~23 years but this is enticing.
I love brawl in arena and this will be great
Naver gave MTGO much of a look. This actually seems pretty nice and a decent bargain. Thanks
Tabletop simulator will be way cheaper than this way and you’ll have access to any of the cards for freeeeeee
I personally recommend Untap, which lets you have 10 decks at a time for free
I switched from untap to tabletop simulator and it’s so much better. There is even a huge discord server for finding games
Still waiting on cards from over two years ago to get added to MTGO (Purification Druid, looking at you).
They just added Druid of Purification :D
@@jeschoulmsan you’re a saint. Thank you
This is the content I wake up for.
Maybe experience some vintage cube while they're at it. Peak magic.
Personally I still find tabletop simulator to be the best online commander option, though I would be lying if i said that i haven't given MTGO a thought, Tabletop SIm is just a significantly cheaper alternative.
Thank you for this video, and the intro to Mtgo!
Xmage is an excellent thing, it has literally all the cards, all the formats and a completely done rules engine, as well as all the alternative arts and everything completely for free.
Great video, Prof! Love MTGO.
Great vid! Cheap OTJ drafts online too right now. Packs around 1 ticket to play!
I’m ready for the Charlie episode!
Thank you for this video! Last time I saw MTGO it looked… out of date. This video has convinced me it’s time to transition from expensive paper magic to online 24/7 games!
I just sold my collection. Going online more
I prefer untap in, ots basically like playing with webcam (as there is no automisation) except you dont have to shuffle manually or even own any cards.
Don't forget about untap as well
You should tell people about tabletop simulator
great video i didnt know where to start thank you!
great video but can’t wait for Charlie
