absolutely love being able to go back and watch videos you made over 3 years ago and see how far the production and talking to the camera have come. Will be using this as reference to install my first pocket door in my master bedroom remodel! I made sure to line up that like button plumb and give it an extra click 😉
Your dad is one smart cookie! Knows a lot of detail. Pay close attention and remember the things he's teaching you. I've watched a few of your episodes and this is the one that made me subscribe!! Great reference material.
I taught myself that blocking trick a few houses ago when we remodeled the bathroom. I remembered how hard it was to hang towel rods and paper holders and mirrors with those silly anchors that don't really work for heavy handed objects because we all know they tend to pull out or just make large holes etc. I used pieces of scrap 2x materials. I didn't think about using plywood though, probably because I didn't have any of that scrap at the moment and I used what was faster. I just nailed the 2x between the studs in the areas where I thought the accessories would be going and then made a note of where it was and the measurements and points to find it once the rock was up and painted. I should have made a video about it, but I was in a hurry at that time.
THIS is exactly what I need!! I have 2 of these doors/frames to install, and every other video I have found is the 1500 style. Your time and video is much appreciated! Thank you!
I am building a house. My wife and I like pocket doors, but I don't trust many people to put them in right, so I will be putting them and all my interior doors in place when the time comes. Although I have plenty of experience installing doors, I have never installed a pocket door. Your pocket door videos are just what I need to make sure I get a smooth functioning, trouble free installation. Thanks for the lessons!
I love your videos. You take your time to explain the process and give tips on "what to look out for". Jordan does an excellent job on taking good video shots to be able to see what you're doing!!!
Best video on Pocket Door Installation...You were very descriptive and provided all the details, so even a first time installer; like myself can do this...thank you, much appreciated! 👍 👌

Your what we call here jack of all trades not to many people left like you. Good job buddy
I did a remodel for a wheelchair bound man and he wanted all pocket doors so he did not have to back up and go forward to open his doors. He also needed grab bars in a lot of places, so I framed all the walls with pocket doors with 2 X 6 and then doubled the horizontals with 1/2 plywood and then sheeted over them with 1/2 plywood on both sides. that made the pocket door walls very stiff and had full backing for any wall hung items. It also left enough space for a slim line electrical box for light switches.
Well done. This is the best of the videos I have seen on this subject. It also relates to the installation I have to perform which is to attach to concrete.
Screws in a pocket door? When I was working for the phone company, I had to go on a call back and fix another technician's mess up. He installed a line into the bedroom, through the wall in the closet. He didn't check to see what was on the wall. The bathroom door was a pocket door, and as you said, was open/in the pocket. He drilled through the bottom of the slab, by about an inch. I learned that day not only how to replace a pocket door slab, but that it is also harder to match an older slab from HD, after 30 years hanging in the house. But in the end, the home owner, my manager and of course the other technician was pleased.
I had to install a bunch of these pocket doors in some new build homes. Wish it had gone as smoothly as this. The framers did a piss poor job so I had to fix so much crap before I could install properly. Wish I could have shown them your work!!
You should put in the title that this is a Johnson Hardware 2700. I was looking all over today for some reference because I had to install one. thankfully I was able to figure it out and get it done but this video would have been a lot easier on me today if I'd have had that in the title to search. Great video by the way I really appreciate knowledge like this.
This was a very helpful video I understand completely I will be installing three pocket doors tomorrow and I now feel it will be no problem thank you very much 💪🔥💪🔥💪
Thank you I which to you all the blessing of life your videos are always educational and conctructive can you please make a video on how to frame a window opening as well the installation?
Thank you for the very informative video!!! I wasn't sure if there is another video showing the actual door install because i was concerned how the door was going to work with the finished flooring. Are these doors usually sized to allow clearance for the flooring or does the door need to be trimmed to clear whatever flooring is used? Thanks again!!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I really can’t tell how helpful this was. Great explanation and perfect method of how to get the job done correctly from start to finish. Wishing you all the best and thanks again!
Thanks for the video! Definitely helps me out since this will be mybfirst attempt at a pocket door. I was wondering, do you shim the top of the pocket door as well or is that not necessary?
Bro, I just got home from work and I'm really tired so I opened a nice and cold beer drinking it enjoying your video and I really really miss my dad( pasted away already😞) you are so lucky to have your dad and the best of everything he is teaching you his excellent skills of carpentry.... my best regards for you my man. You have a new subscriber 😀😀
Really enjoy your programs. Look forward to seeing them each time. Looking for some advice. I'm trying to hang a to towl rod against a wall that backs up to the pocket door. Obviously if I put an anchor in there and screw that's too long it will scratch the door. Any advice? I'm assuming I just use a regular anchor with a shorter screw perhaps 1/2-in or 3/4 but what would you suggest.
Great video with very detailed info especially for a rookie DIYer like myself. Sometimes I get it right other times I have to call in a professional to fix what I screwed up. I'm going to try to install a pocket door behind the side door of my high roof cargo van as part of the conversion and I think that a preassembled frame will make the task a lot easier with my limited carpentry knowledge. Could you give me a link to where I could buy one? Looking forward to more of your videos.
Hey Stanley we're glad we could help! We purchased our Pocket Door frames from a local supplier (we shop locally if we can) but you can just as easily head down to your local Lowes or Home Depot and pick one up!
Great video, the only one I have found that shows the truth assembly of a store-bought pocket door frame. Now if you could just teach me how to deal with my wife while I try to install this damn thing.
How did you decide what make/vendor and model of pocket door to select and purchase? Like everyone, I only want to install the pocket hole door one time and have it last a long time. Thanks.
I had electricians cut in a double plug in the bathroom. The helper cut the hole then came and got me and the electrician cause he had a hard time cutting through the wall. When he was done he realized there was a solid wall inside the wall. It was our pocket door. 🙁
What about accounting for flooring though? Like 1 inch stone. Does that add 1 1/4 with mortar to the rough frame height? I’d hate to have to cut the door bottoms after flooring installation.
Does the hardware for the door come with the frame? Is the normal door height good if engineered hardwood flooring is put down over a concrete floor after the pocket door frame is installed? Awesome video for the DIYer
Great video. We have a frosted glass pocket door in our master bath BUT our contractor didn't put any blocking and that's the only wall I can install a towel bar. Since I don't have blocking, do I mount the towel bar screws to the strapping? I really don't want to break the glass! Mahalo!
Thx Gabe. If the strapping locations work then absolutely you can use them to mount the towel bar. With the pocket door open you should be able to use a flashlight to peek inside the door cavity to locate the strapping. Watch your screw length when attaching the towel bar:)
Aloha Stud Pack...Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I REALLY appreciate your reply. I’m looking forward to (finally) mounting my towel bar with a peace of mind. 🙏🙏🙏. 🤙Mahalo 🌺
Pocket doors sadly tend to be loud, you have to use felt to make the rolling mechanism quiet, or rubber can work. They are also really bad soundproofing-wise, so if used for a watercloset or bathroom look into soundproofing solutions for pocket doors and get a full door, not a hollow one.
get the aluminum or galvanized steel pocket doors you won't regret it. THey have a door guide that keeps the door from wobbling and they have way better rollers. The cost and effort to install a pocket door far outweighs the extra cost of the frame kit.
will it be nuts if i use this kit on a 42x96 and do a rough opening framing on a 8 feet ceiling i understand it will be taller then 8feet and it will actually go into the attic about 4 inches , i confirmed it will land right between the rafters, any advice on why not to do it?
Love to watch your videos. Question, is there an issue using a pocket door that is going to be part of a tiled shower wall? I'm assuming I will be using hardy backer
What brand/manufacture is this pocket door frame? Looking to do something similar for the master bath. Looking at Home depot, they have some all steel frames, and wood frame (with steel tracks). Which is best?
That door was by Johnson Hardware. We have a more recent video of two different brand pocket doors that intersect if you’d like to check that one out 👍 I’ve never used a steel frame pocket door
This is without a doubt the best video on pocket door frame installation I've ever seen. Truly you are a master craftsman.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the great video. I especially like the tip about thinking ahead and installing blocking before putting up drywall.
It's kind of neat going back and seeing how you got more and more comfortable in front of the camera.

Experience always shows in the details. Great tips about adding the blocking!
Watched quite a few pocket door vids, urs is by far the best and most informative! Great job
I always enjoy your videos.

I'm doing pocket doors on my second floor, this is a huge help, awesome information, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great description and explanation as to why you do what need to be done.
Whatever the brand you buy or video you watch, read the manufacturers instructions for proper installation.

When they built my house they did exactly that - a screw too far and sliding the door left me a groove through the paint and timber.
They just about need to sheath pocket door frames with steel anymore...
