True for SB19. They took all the risks, hates, bashing just to make our country known globally. Kahit pinagtatawanan sila ng ibang pinoy😢. But they've proved it. They are indeed the PPop Kings! Kahit walang big companies behind their back, still they made it.. with A'TIN. and when you put God first in everything you do hindi ka talaga mapapahiya. Ang ibinababa ay itataas. At ang itinataas ay ibababa ng Diyos❤
If anything, SB19 proves that destiny is sometimes ironic. They didn't start out with large audiences- as Stell said: "They were about 11 to 14 people following us- we even recognize them because they're the same people watching our performances." If you see their older videos, you'd find them performing in orphanages and schools for FREE- yet they perform as if they're standing on the world stage. They may be singing and dancing in broken shoes and borrowed clothes, while having to cope with cramped stages, faulty equipment, and power interruptions. But they performed like it was the last night of the world. You would never see in their faces that they were tired.
They were always smiling as if they're having fun- and they talk to their audiences as if they're just one, big family.
How can anyone fake that? They're authentic from within and without.
Even if money mattered, they performed without it. And it didn't seem as if it ever bothered them at all.
Josh, Pablo, Ken, Stell, and Justin knew how hard it is to struggle from nothing to something. It's not a cakewalk- they never had overnight successes that turned them into pop sensations in weeks. Even their best songs didn't "go up" a few hours or days after release. Their "Tilaluha" debut was exactly what it was- a tragedy. No one cared. Their first facebook appearance only had ten views. Their online live appearances would take hours to get as many as 50 viewers.
There's no better analogy, I think, than imagining these boys swimming in a giant Olympic pool with cannonballs tied to their ankles. It was swim or sink- but they managed to reach the shore and even pull better swimmers along with them.
I think SB19 are PIONEERS in their own right but in a different sense- they didn't carve the FIRST PATH to pop stardom since others have been there before- and their successes were even bigger. What makes SB19 pioneering in ANOTHER sense of the word is their ability to BREAK THE STEREOTYPES of SUCCESS- and that means breaking political and cultural barriers that, in Gandalf's words, seem to say "You shall not pass!"
SB19 had to beat down dragons and demons (bakunawas?) trying to swallow them whole just to "pass through" those gates. The business "gatekeepers" wanted them to pass through the "normal" channels- get some sponsors, pander to big names, bow down and lick the boots of big names and labels in the business. But they chose to enter through the hearts of their fans and supporters first- and that is by being able to give voice to the same sensibilities and sentiments that drive the passions of not one- but several generations.
Of all the pop groups around, they probably have the most balanced audiences- that is, every age and social class seems to be represented in the fan population they have. People young and old, lower, middle to upper class professionals abroad support them as a group. They see a part of themselves in SB19's struggles and heartaches. I see myself in SB19- not in the way young, kpop fans would say "Oh, kpop saved my life!" but in the sense of "SB19 and PPOP was there to make us proud."
SB19 was not an addiction like kpop- where you're tempted to "watch" more than "listen." SB19 forces us to "listen" because the meaning is in the message- and the message is in the music that is heard rather than seen. When they dance, the dance steps are not random steps trying to fill the gaps in our attention span. They emphasize certain beats and lyrics in the song that have deeper symbolisms or deeper sentiments.
SB19 is no teenager's escape from boredom. They served as inspiration to "always choose to be good," to fight and remain true to oneself regardless of hate, condemnation, bullying, crude politics, prejudice, and stereotyping.
Their dreams reached our hearts because unlike the rest of the world, Filipinos strangely have dreams BEYOND personal success and recognition. Maybe because we've all suffered rejection, prejudice, discrimination, and racism in our lives... so we want to prove that we're stronger and wiser than the world sees us. And maybe, just maybe... SB19 captured that spirit... and is putting that spirit into the most thought-provoking music we haven't heard for a very, VERY long time.
Goddam you made me cry! Spot on! Just like to add my personal view, to me they personify COURAGE, they pushed through despite adversities and that's so admirable! It irks me when they're compared to pretty much every group that debuts, there's NO ONE LIKE THEM, they're INCOMPARABLE! Filipinos need to wake up and see beyond 'visuals' and feel, SB19 Music!

You always give an excellent perspective, and I fully agree that these gents deserve so much more. The adversaries are within, and it's so sad to say that they don't have the cells to get the clue and smart up. They will always exist to drag them down. They are all over the place, kapwa pinoy ready to smear you, whether be at the workplace, gatherings.. etc. It's hard to beat that Naka stamp na sa DNA yata nang pinoys.

The questions here are: Did the old groups called themselves PPOP? Did the people back then recognize them as PPOP? Did they make a name for themselves internationally as a PPOP group? If we are going to call the oldest group the pioneer of PPOP then that should be HAGIBIS, a dancing and singing group that started in 1979. Now. who started presenting themselves as PPOP? XLR8? Chicser? The groups back then were called boy bands, boy groups, or girl groups. Either way, the boys of SB19 are the KINGS of PPOP and will always be! If people still want to argue...let them...after all it's just a title. SB19 is on a league of their own, always creating their own niche, taking risks, facing struggles, and making Filipino music known to the world! #SB19 is one of a kind!

Pinoy Pop ang genre ng old Ppop groups. We all know Ppop is shortened version ng Pinoy Pop. Nauso lang talaga ang word na Ppop nowadays because of the influence of Kpop.

It is not made to create hatred to the community, but to open everyone to the most important message of the entire video. "Hindi man sila ang nauna, pero sila ang nagbukas ng pintuan ng pangarap internationally, para sa mga nangangarap na kabataan." They received all the bashing, hatred, mocking, and the worst, threat, but they pursue their dreams and goals because they believe that Filipinos can do more than anyone else. Tiniis nila lahat ng bashing para muling iukit at kilalanin ang "modernong" musikang Pilipino ( PPOP ) sa entablado sa Pilipinas at labas ng bansa.
They received little to no support from local music enthusiasts and media alike because of the notion that Filipino performers and idols should be mestizos as what the mainstream media is projecting. The dictates and pressures that a pre-defined standards of a "good-looking" performers and artists should only be limited to what has been perceived by many and accepted norms of the society which in one way or another, indirectly disqualifies SB19 per se. Little did we know that these idols serve more than just being performers. They started the movement of what should truly idols are not just physically but the impact they bring to Filipinos and foreign alike. They defy these norms and dictates/pressures of how mainstream media glorify and celebrate idols based on their pre-defined standards which failed when SB19 started the movement. They re-introduce OPM genre on a whole new level that is at par with K-pop and other western pop music. Ang alam lang ng mainstream media ay pagsabungin, pag-aawayin mga fans at sisiraan o di kaya'y gagamitin ang SB19 para sa mga personal agenda nila. We'll ibahin ang most loyal A'tin fans nila na naging part na ng buhay at journey nila since day one of their debut. Hindi uubra ang mga gamitan at siraan show dahil prang pinagbuklod na ang SB19 at mga fans nila.
PS: Nowadays, iba na ang labanan, talent over looks kung sa tingin nila d pasok at akma ang SB19 sa panlasa nila. It's more of being inspired and be able to connect with your audience especially, we, Filipinos can easily relate to SB19's humble beginnings.

We already have Ppop but no one nor boy group made it to the top or success to promote Ppop until #SB19 came and fought really hard to be heard . Watching them progress slowly and achieve their main goal to uplift Ppop ..is answered sacrifices,hardwork and prayers. My boys #SB19 is the trial & error . The impossible to possible .
Sana sa lahat ng emerging PPOP, sana ipromote ang sariling atin, our culture, our daily Filipino lives, costumes and sceneries. Yung ibang nagsisilabasan kasi, we cannot determine kung anu ba ang prinopromote, one video I saw is mga private jets and champagne, and it doesn't reflect Filipino cuture. We cannot relate at all as a Filipino 🇵🇭

We may say that SB19 may not be pioneers in the PPOP genre...SB19 never said that they are the pioneers ..they even said that there are many who came before them...but let us admit that SB19 Brought PPOP to the next highest level, and introduced the PPOP to the world...They propped the other PPOP groups to the world...they are now recognized highly and labelled PPOP KINGS...
I haven't seen nor heard anyone denying that SB19 made PPOP relevant globally.

MNL48 started a new era of PPOP Groups, which I coin the "Idol Era" and that week when former MNL48 member Quincy promoted SB19's then-little known Go Up Performance Vid to us MNLoves, then us with Aurum promoting them and coining the term #PPOPRise, eventually snowballing in their notoriety, marked the END of the 1st Generation of this new Era. iirc the active groups around that time were MNL48, SB19, PPOPGen and SB NewGen.

The likes of Sex Bombs are Ppop already but their songs and them are seen by many as novelty. Yung kanta nila ay naging patok din hindi lang sa pinas but in all of Asia yet they're not the definition of what a Ppop standard should sound and look like not until SB19 came who redefined and re-introduced Ppop genre to the world. Ppop or pop soloist on the other hand, like Sarah G and other artists, cla yung naging patok and sinusuportahan ng media and bacame mainstream but if you come to think of it, they're only famous here in the Philippines and some parts of the world where there are Filipino audiences. Merong foreign audience/s na kilala cla pero iilan lang din and that same goes with SB19 who only has fewer non-Filipino foreign audiences.
Charice Pempengco can be considered pop/ballad soloist at sikat talaga sya sa US and Canada and some parts of Europe and mostly Asia.
The question of sinong nauna sa Ppop industry shouldn't matter anymore esp to casual listeners. Sa fans yes mag matter yan sa kanila kc nga inspirasyon din yan for them and to their idols who re-create Ppop history.

Maybe they are not the first because Pinoy pop artists already exist a long time ago but SB19 is the first to use the term Ppop to describe what type of music or genre they are... pop artists of the past are called girl group or boy band... SB19 make it a trend to use the term Ppop and indeed they are the Ppop kings because of their achievements both local and international at yun ang di naabot ng mga dati yung makilala pati sa international pero salamat din sa kanila kasi napasaya din nila mga Pinoy.

If sb19 not the Ppop pioneer, why is it that the press people didn't know the Ppop thing and they questioned sb19 about the difference between Ppop and Kpop?. Josh even said that time that it will be a new sound to the Filipinos. Clearly Pinoy pop music existed before sb19 and it evolved but sb19 started the 'Ppop' branding of Pinoy groups in line with Kpop.
There’s a big difference between passion and just for stardom when it comes to industry.. look at our celebrity mostly gusto lang sumikat not because they love the art of acting kaya hindi umaabot sa international standard yung palabas natin kaya yung lumabas yung sb19.. what I really see to them is passionate.. even pablo himself their leader answer to the given question of what career he might have if he wasn’t sb19 member and he still choose music.. now those first “Ppop” I’m not saying their not passionate it just not enough..

You didn't include 143. Among the boy groups before, sila yung may song that went mainstream - Sa Isang Sulyap Mo. XLR8 was only popular for Filipino Kpop Fans.
One song also that made it to the mainstream particularly the radio is Prinsesa by VFort.

I would not call it Ppop yet in the era of Sexbomb because we recognize them as a girl group same as how we recognize the Backstreet boys as a boyband. Ppop arises because of the change of the flat form, at the same time the out reach of the audience have change tremendously and with the birth of social media things have been taken to a different level. Kpop, Jpop, Ppop and more are labeled as such to distinguish which country this certain music and group are from. To ask a question as to who was the pioneer it will be like "tale as old as time".
To answer the question if we use the word PPOP then we all know that SB19 started it all and we know the rest was history. Just an FYI before the Ppop was ever so popular in our country our friends from the Visayan region have been celebrating VisPOP it is a recognition of our Visayan music and writers. this links are just a few example of VIspop we have song such as Morena Girl, Inday by TJ Montarde, Cebuana by Karencita and more.

I'm sorry to disagree but when we talk PPop, as is the prevailing genre today, we are talking about idol culture groups that originated in Japan then Korea. Thus, the Japanese Idol model and the Korean Idol model, which later adapted by different countries like IPop, TPop and yes, PPop. That's why MNL48, under Jpop model and SB19, under Kpop model are the official pioneers of Ppop music. Any pinoy groups that preceded this idol era are just pop groups because they were the popular groups singing popular tunes of their times. And don't confuse Idol culture to singing groups because any songs being sung during a certain era were the Pop song of that time, whether it's groups or solo artists. If we go along with your idea of Ppop then we can consider including Tatlong Itlog, Tres Marias, Big Three Sullivans, Circus Band, New Minstrels and the likes, to be Ppop. What' the difference about Ppop compared to ordinary pop? The upbringing, the discipline, the training, and the mindset involved in making an idol group. But if we look closely, we are beginning to have our own sounds, like SB19 BGYO, BINI and dance steps different from Kpop? Now that's Ppop 2.0.
False. MNL48 is the only Pioneer of PPOP idols Groups - they were first. When one uses the plural form Pioneers, it refers solely to MNL48 members.

MNL48 is not a Pioneer of PPOP pero sila ang Pioneer ng Idol Group sa Pilipinas. Kumbaga, First Filipino Idol Group. Idol Group po hindi boy/girl group/band o novelty group. Magkaiba kasi un. Ung mga nauna sa MNL48 at SB19 eh hindi maituturing na Idol Group. Mga nauna sa kanila is boy/girl group/band o novelty group.
Ung SB19 naman, hindi man pioneer din pero sila ang pinaka paved the way sa PPOP. Sila ang dahilan kung bakit sikat at angat na ang PPOP.

If we really want PPOP to take off, let us stop breeding this elitist mentality that other groups should be grateful to the older group for "paving the way" for them like duh? Pinaghihirapan din naman nila yung ginagawa nila. Sa katunayan, sila nga ang dehado dahil yung fandom ng mga mas batang grupo ay maliliit kumpara sa nauna. Kung isang grupo lang talaga gusto natin sumikat, sige ituloy natin yung elitismo. Napaka-ipokrito kasi ng mga sumisigaw ng "PPOP Rise" pero may mga binibitawan na namang mga salita na "This group paved the way for the other group."
