I have studied Data Science specifically with IBM for 1 year. I have a medical background with no degree. I am a mom of 3 and wife. I study at my own pace. I pay a monthly tuition and have recieved 2 scholarships for my entry level Data Science certification. I plan on getting my masters eventually. I am doing SQL currently and taking Python. It's challenging but I will be 38yrs old this year and I have found what I love! 😍 I love numbers, I have always been very curious and in general if you are open to always learning you will be successful. I don't have plans to intern I am just going to apply and go into a field I am already passionate to see growth in. I just found your videos by looking up budgeting with an income increase. I want to show my kids a new way to live and see numbers as helping us but understanding them and laying that foundation has come by studying Data Science. Thanks for this video and the budget. Sounds about right to me. I'm another former Astrophysics grad who (after a lot in between) moved into Data Science about 5 years ago ("staff DS" level now, mostly work on less straight forward flavors of ML model evaluation).

I think Data Engineering/data analyst is what I want to do. i more interested in building out the database and analyzing data. I think one has to factors is age as well, at the age of 40 with kids i don't think most people will have the same energy in which you have. where is the 40+ or 50+ year old data scientist? obviously they exist but i think by that age while projects are important family is a factor. You seem young enough, so I'll definitely like to see your thoughts on the industry as you get older(35-40). I wont speak to deeply about the health ramification of the field, what age, and having kids does to a person. *You have a lot of enthusiasm and I like that so I'll subscribe for sure*
Just graduated from Cal with a physics degree and struggling to land an interview for data science/analyst position, I have only one project on my portfolio which is using python to analysis semiconductor data but I just don't think it is enough, however it's all I really have right now. I know I probs need a solid project thats shows good SQL and python ML skills but I just don't know what to do. Any tips and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your videos!
Congratulations on graduating! Here are my thoughts: My projects in college: a couple of projects I had in my computational astrophysics classes involved building CNNs to identify gravitationally lensed objects, a binary classification model to predict between stars and galaxies using SDSS telescope data, and also data analysis projects about interpolation, bayesian models, etc. In the CS classes I took, I really learned all of python in them so lots of CS-specific projects like web scraping, and my largest project was scraping chess data and building a chess bot with a frontend UI (it was a group project). Hopefully those examples help, I honestly don't think you need to work on anything crazy. Just showcasing that you're thoughtful about data analysis and visualization is the first step. That's your exploratory data analysis phase, and then comes model building and predictive analytics. I didn't really know/understand everything about the ML models I built in my classes honestly, but I began to learn a lot more on the job. So just scouring for fun data sets on Kaggle and thinking about how to explore and visualize the data would be the next step if you want projects to add to your portfolio. But my BIGGEST tip is just to start gathering data on interview processes with all of the big tech companies since they hire a lot from Cal, and start applying out and interview prep. Practicing with projects will help if you need to build a strong foundation in coding, but if you already have one, interview prep might be your next step (and having a really clear and clean resume). Thinking about your story, coming from physics to data science, is important too.
This is probably going to be a long comment. Anyway, here goes. I used to work at this hospital (Kaiser Permanente) as a temp. My title was mail clerk but they had me do so much more. We had to figure out how to transition employees from working in the office to working at home. I was basically doing project management. I had to do flowcharts, present to management and so on. I imagine that data scientist duties are the same. I’m currently going back to school to change my career. I’m studying Physics and going to take the same trajectory. It’s going to take 4 years 😩 but it will be SO worth it.
That's awesome! Congratulations on going back to school, it's a big step but it sounds like you have a very clear vision of what you want. Physics is such a great major since it really teaches you how to break down abstract concepts into digestible steps and tackle it head on. Good luck to you!

I was watching the Coolworlds UA-cam channel and I was just in awe with the data they were collecting. I can’t think of the astrophysicist name but he said that the study of exo-moons is really opening up. That being said I know it’s kind of a winding road to get to being an astrophysicist.

I learned a lot of programming (python) in computational astrophysics courses - if you're still an undergrad, I'd strongly recommend taking your school's CS introductory courses in python first to gain a stronger foundation and build upon that with more python-specific and statistics/ML courses after. That's how I got my first job out of college as a data scientist! It's really about building a strong foundation in python, then layering stats/math tools (which should be easy coming from the physics classes), and then it's all about just preparing for the interviews. :)
@@bereniceg777 C++ can be useful (especially for software development) but data scientists mostly program in Python, PySpark, have expert SQL skills, and some use R but all big tech companies really just require python.

Definitely Data Analyst if you want a faster payback period. If you are committed to Data Science now/only, ignore the rest of these words and dislike my comment. It appears that Data Scientist have the Stats, SQL, Programming, ML, etc. You can be some kind of analyst with Excel, better with SQL, and Uber with a BI tool. Going Data Analyst might enable you to transition within the hospitality industry operations (assuming) to corporate. Management goes goo goo ga ga for measures and metrics. Learn basic Accounting, Finance for ROI, Lean Six Sigma, for a performance centric mindset to start/increase your experience as an analyst. Example: Avg Daily Rate, Room Occupancy, by Day, by Hotel discounting by actual variable cost or budgeted cost (per day) Now you have Domain Knowledge and mild Technical Knowledge Use that to further upgrader you technical skills, (now your are in Corporate, they will probably finance your training), Stats, Programming, ML so you can provide answers/insights that answer key business questions especially as they relate to the Measures the Data Analyst builds to measure and drive corporate performance. Learn, Excel, SQL, basic business concepts (Accounting, Finance, LSS), basic Statics AS 'ANALYST' AND BI Tool (Do PowerBI becasue MSFT learned their lesson when word lost to the pdf) AS 'DATA_Analyst' AND Programming, Language (help with Data Analyst), ML, High End Match, * AS 'DATA_SCIENTIST' This is my (or what I believe to the be the best timing strategy to achieve a full stack solution to be desirable in both realms. Opps! I spent too long, unnecessarily sharing my opinion, Better I get back to studying and less talking about what to do. Goodluck on you journey! Do it on the cheap (UA-cam), use online subscription (Maven Analytics), or pay per course like UDEMY.
