    This is a non-for-profit video made & uploaded for educational purposes. Specifically the "Introduction to Cinema" (THE-123) & Journalism Practicum (JRN-280) courses I was enrolled in during the Fall 2014 Semester at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri.
    "Legend" is a short documentary about my personal obsession for the VW Bug with a mind of his own. "Herbie" first appeared in Walt Disney Productions 1969 classic "The Love Bug." The film was followed by 3 sequels, a 5 episode TV series, a TV movie and a 2005 installment that I dare not mention by name. This mini-doc is a personal account of how a dream that I had as child came true in an early chapter of my life as well as a brief synopsis about what it is like to build, drive & own a Herbie Replica.
    Shot with go GoPro Hero3+ and Canon - VIXIA HF R500 HD
    Edited in Final Cut Pro
    Dedicated in memory of visual effects artist Danny Lee who passed away at the age of 95 in November 2014.
    Danny personally helped create the "magic" that made Disney what it is today. During his 30+ year career, him and his effects team were nominated for 2 Academy Awards and Danny & company took home the Oscar for "Best Visual Effects" in 1972 for their work in the 1971 film "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." Before being named head of the special effects department at Disney in 1971, Danny worked on many great classic films including "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "Bonnie & Clyde" and "The Great Race."
    However it was his work on 1969's "The Love Bug" and its sequels, bringing the various VW Beetle's to life in the role of "Herbie." That earns him the title of "Legend" in the Herbie Community. Danny was a master of his craft, making audiences believe in the impossible decades before the days of computers & CGI. His work in some cases was un-credited, but his films must NEVER be forgotten.
    To Quote Herbie movie car historian Tory Alonzo, who actually interviewed Danny around the turn of the century, Danny Lee was simply "The Man Who Made Mary Poppins Fly." Rest In Peace Danny and know that your legacy is the stuff of Legend.

    Get this - I'm 61, and I saw the first Love Bug movie on the big screen when I was 15. I've never loved a movie more. I've seen it maybe 100 times over the years. Herbie is way special, and it doesn't matter how old you get; if you love Herbie, that's it. Great job on the documentary, Mike. Your Herbie is amazing.

    Great documentary. Love the engine! Glad to hear a herbie driver mention the "herbie effect" ( miles of smiles ) for both you and the others. I've got my own and I know exactly where you're coming from. It's a fun little car. Surprised you haven't made up a set of deep 15x6 smoothies for it though. I too got stuck with the 15x5.5's with brake cooling slots for a few years. Good luck on your way!

    Very, very cool, Mike! We share some similar childhood experiences. I'm 54 years old and first saw 'The Love Bug' when it came out in March, 1969. As an 8-year old kid, I was completely mesmerized by that movie. I remember drawing the 'Love Bug' logo (words shaped like a VW) for all of my second grade classmates (ha!). I also live in the St. Louis area (Chesterfield) and would love to see your car someday....! Thanks, John

    You are such an inspiration to me! It has been my lifetime dream to restore a '63 Beetle Ragtop Sedan to be a Herbie Replica. Your car is almost exactly what I would want in my own Herbie replica, though I'd love to put a '64/'65 Porsche 356SC 1600cc dual carb engine in it, but not only to give it a sportier feel, but because in all the racing scenes in "The Love Bug" they actually used engines deriving from Porsche 356s and 912s ;)

    Sam Cleaves, I agree, you shouldn't care about what anyone thinks.
    Follow your dreams and make yourself happy.
    I wasn't alive when Herbie movies were about but a Nintendo Game got me into him.
    When I saw a plain white, Beetle Being towed on the highway I immediatly thought out of Herbie,
    And I was like "Dad, chase the Herbie!" It was the first I had seen a Volkswagen Beetle in real life.

    This is my dream and my goal. I want to do the same thing. My first car will be a Beetle and I don't care what anyone says. And I will fix up the Beetle, and build my Herbie because Herbie makes me happy and that's what I want. Something I can feel accomplished about and something I can love, because when I look at any old 63 Beetle, I just see a Beetle, but when I look at Herbie, I see a friend and something alive and loving.

I've been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember...mostly American muscle cars & muscle trucks, but I have an appreciation for any well-built car that has style. Great mini doc! I loved Herbie growing up, in my early 30's now. I drive around a fully restored 1969 Fiat 500. It's yellow at the moment but in a couple of years it'll be in the need of a new paint job...previous job isn't too great. I'm thinking of turning it into a Fiat 500 version of Herbie. Will paint it L87 Pearl White, (which I believe is Herbie's color), and get some decals, as well as that Corello fog light!

    Hey Mike. Great documentary, and thank you for the info on all the nice details. I found A white 1963 Beetle, that I bought for my son, and I to restore and turn into one like yours. We both love the movie and enjoy the Beetle car shows here in Florida. I was also wondering, who supplied you the wheels, and the gas cap? Do you have info on where you purchased them, and the racing stickers in the windows. Thank you for any info, and thanks for keeping Herbie alive for our inner childhood. I can't wait to start our project to share with everyone as well. Thank you Mike. 2 thumbs up.

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  6 років тому

      Nizmo, thanks for the praise! I purchased my wheels from AC Industries in California, they're a copy of a 15 x 5.5 Mangel made in China and are a good quality wheel for the money. The gas cap I found off eBay through a Shelby Cobra vendor and does not have the screen correct latch, but it looks the part as do the wheels, which for a MC Car were actually 14" x 6". The green & yellow window stickers were made years ago by a former member of LBF, the Trans France Race decals were made by me actually and while I no longer have any extra sets there is someone on eBay selling copies of mine for a fair price. Just type in "Trans France Race Stickers" in the search box and I bet they will pop up. Best of luck with your project!

      Mike Dyer My name is Davide from Italy and Im going to build my Herbie too !! Now is a white ( L87 pearl white) Beetle with 53 with stripes from Monte Carlo but I would like to make a good replica as your !! Mine is not a ragtop how can I do to modified it into ragtop? And what Kindle of gray I have to use for interior? Where I can find interior Seat carpet and headliner like your ? Thanks so much Davide

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  6 років тому

      Dear Davide, Greeting from the U.S! These days the best way to make a car into a ragtop sunroof from a standard sedan is to "graft" in a real sunroof clip from another car; essentially welding in the part of the roof with the sunroof mechanism. It has become a common practice here in the U.S. but real Golde sunroof clips are not cheap. There are a couple of aftermarket sunroofs that when installed look decent, but it just depends on how crazy you are about the details and how much your budget will allow. The grey I used for the interior paint was actually matched from one of the screen used Monte Carlo movie cars, granted I don't think its 100% correct, but it looks the part. I'm fairly confident that my headliner and carpet kit are from a company in California called TMI. Been over a decade since they were installed, so I apologize if I can't remember exactly. Best of luck with your project!

What size tires are you currently running on your 15x5.5 tires? They look fantastic. I have the same size wheels on my beetle right now. Are your's 205/60r15's? I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I would recommend stopping by at the forums at lovebugfans.yuku.com. The information on the site is invaluable when it comes to building a Herbie! I'm currently running 195/65R15's on all 4 wheels. I previously ran 195/60's on my last set of Mangels, but I wanted a slightly taller sidewall this round so the Goodyear GT Radial lettering wouldn't look so big. Best of luck with your Herbie endeavor! -Mike D.

    Simply awesome film Mike. How about a sequel to this film showcasing more on your restoration and customization with still photos, live action footage and more narrative commentary? I share the dream to have a 1963 Herbie replica as well but lack the skillset to restore one. I think it would be a great lifelong project to share with my young son as he loves Herbie as much as I do. I elect you for president of the Herbie Love Bug fan club. I have to ask how much did you spend for your restoration with all the details and upgrades? You are absolutely right about the positive happy reaction people show when they see your car. Why not capture some of that via hidden video and share it online. The joy and happiness it brings must be priceless.
    Happy holidays to you and yours...cheers my friend!

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  9 років тому

      Robert, Thanks for the praise! Truthfully the car was a rolling restoration that took place mostly between 2006-2007 when the car was taken apart for its L87 transformation. My father and I painted the car during that winter in a make shift spray booth we made in the garage. Since then it has been upgraded every year. He didn't bear the stripes & 53's until the spring of 2009. The drive-train was built by my friend, & VW Performance Specialist, Al Shelton in Wentzville, Missouri. I started off with a Bocar 34-PICT carburated 1600 and I purchased the 1776 as a long block from Al in 2010 and I dressed it to make it turnkey. Since it wasn't an all at once transformation I've never added the total amount in what I have in it, but If I had to guess I would imagine it's upwards of $15k! In the spring I'll see about putting together some kind of slide show on the cars construction.
      Best advice I could give is to get involved with the local VW community and see if you hear about any potential cars that come up locally. I also recommend searching the website thesamba.com. Also don't underestimate the power of craigslist. Main thing to look for when buying an old VW is how solid (rust free) it is. I also recommend stopping by the forums as lovebugfans.yuku.com. You can read all kinds of information from members around the globe and how they built their cars!
      Best of luck and Happy Holidays! -Mike D.

However I haven't spoken to him in years and have no idea wither or not he still owns his car, or how to get ahold of him. What I would do is reach out to the Hawaii VW Club & see if they know who I'm talking about. That depends mostly on where you are on the planet? As far as searching for old VW's I highly recommend the website thesamba.com. It has extensive classified listings from all over the globe and you can search via your location. Your right about the 63 Beetle being a great car, but I found out VERY quickly that a stock 63 Beetle isn't a very practical everyday car during the cold winter months. After a couple of years I started using a '03 Wrangler for a winter driver. These days Herbie pulls daily duty only when the weather permits.

    where did u find the rally horn that goes on the front?

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  6 років тому

      Dear Alex, it actually is not an extra horn, it is a Carello fog/rally light wearing its black cover. Carello was an Italian company that produced lights and lenses for Italian cars back in the 50's/60's/70's, and their fixtures were on everything Italian from Lamborghini to Fiat. If you ever look through vintage car magazines from the 1970's you may even spot a Carello advertisement or two. I found the one that is on my car currently on thesamba.com, but they do frequently show up on eBay motors.

    Hey where did you get the props to make your Herbie I'm trying to gather info on were I can get the stuff so when I do build mine I can make Monte Carlo Herbie

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  7 років тому

      SethMan53! If you are referring to MC specific items, the highback seats were custom made in house by Disney and have to be replicated from scratch using original modified VW seat frames. The Gas Cap is hard to find with the screen accurate latch, so I opted for a "real" Shelby Cobra replica cap that is readily available. Carello lights have become increasing harder to find in recent years, but occasionally pop up on thesamba.com and regularly on eBay. There used to be a guy on eBay who was selling ripped off versions of the Trans France Race stickers that I had made up for lovebugfans.com members years ago. I say "ripped off" because they directly copied the use of the date, March 24th 1977, the release date of "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo," and the "Paris - Monte Carlo" text that I placed on my windshield stickers for a nostalgic touch. It's not movie correct at all, but someone copied it sure enough. LOL. Best of luck with your project! (o\5!3/o)

    Hi Mike , my name is Davide from Italy . Im making my herbie Montecarlo replica too, hope one day be come beautiful as yours !!! Can I ask you where did you take seats and recaro light ?

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  6 років тому +1

      Hello Davide! My "highback" seats were custom made by a local interior shop and I had a local welder modify the seat frames. The Disney special effects department actually made them in house by welding a triangular shaped extension on the standard VW frames and then made the material.
      The "Carello" rally light was a common accessory back in the day for many European sports cars. Carello actually manufactured lights and lenses for many Italian car manufactures. Easiest way to find one these days is eBay, but they are not cheap in good condition. Being in Italy you might want to check out some classic car shows and see if anyone there could help you in your search. Best of Luck with your replica! (o\5!3/o)

    Is it hard for an 16 year old to own an Beetle? Repairing, costs, gas?

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  7 років тому

      Depends on the kind of person that you are, how much money you are willing to spend and how much time you are willing to give to your vehicle. An air-cooled VW requires more annual maintenance than a modern car. While you can upgrade it to reduce the maintenance (an example is electronic ignition points), every upgrade is relative to the over all cost. The stock VW Beetle was very fuel efficient in its day (between 30-40mpg), but this is towards the bottom of the scale today for fuel efficient cars today.

    How did you get hold of the gt radial tyres, and also what measurements for the tyres

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  7 років тому

      Steven, my tires are actually 195/65R15 Goodyear Eagle LS2's that have the outside sidewall shaved smooth. The "Goodyear GT Radial" lettering is actually a kit from treadwear.com.

    In one shot of you driving your Herbie outside, it's wearing the California "OFP 857" plates. I'm curious, how did you get away with doing that?

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  7 років тому

      I just put my replica plate on for filming. Depending on where you live some states/countries do not car what you run on the front as long as you have your legal plate on the back for police observation. Unfortunately Missouri requires both a front and rear Missouri plate that my car runs,, except for the occasional car show.

    • @MikeDyer6378
      @MikeDyer6378  7 років тому +1

      If you were to build this car today to these specs I would estimate it would cost you between $13,000-18,000 depending on what kind of car you are staring with.
