Thank you, Jesse. The note about avoiding a flat spot is well made.

Excellent video. Good camera angle switching. Informative. I expect we will see more good videos about tuning up pens.

My Lamy Safari fine was perfectly smooth but my Lamy studio extra fine needed working on to get it to smoothness and this is how I did it without the micromesh. First I dipped the pen in ink and wrote and noticed how rough it was. Then I checked that the tines were aligned perfectly with a magnifying glas. Then dipping the pen in plain water multiple times, wrote figure of eights on a rough brown paper (grocery rough paper shopping bag) many many times checking in between by writing on a white sheet of paper with water and noting the roughness slowly disappear. I made both vertical figure of eights and horizontal figure of eights many times on the brown paper, dipping the nib in water. Finally I checked which strokes were still rough and did just those strokes on the brown paper until they also became smoother. Finally I repeated the figure of eight again a few times and finished off the procedure. I have used this procedure before in my Parker, Platinum and now this Lami studio with good result.

Great short video, thank you. Have been using 2000 wet dry on my nibs, then finishing with a ceramic rod. Good results so far. Now wish to get even better results.

    Hello,
Soak the micromesh (12,000) in warm water for about fifteen (15) minutes, and then apply some organic coconut liquid oil onto the mesh. Place the mesh on a piece of cloth on a flat surface area or a portion of soft cardboard and draw the treble clef music sign (brace) without any pressure; a fountain pan's weight is sufficient for this procedure. If the pen is too light, put a (depending on the diameter of the fountain pen) 3/8" (0.020 Oz, 0.566 gr) or 1/2" (0.17 Oz, 4.7 gr) stainless steel or brass nuts 1/2" above the nib on the pen's holding area. Also, use tape to hold the nut and keep the person doing the process from touching the nuts, where stainless steel and brass have California Proposition 65 Warnings.
    Sincerely,

If you want to avoid this chore just buy a Bock or a Pilot nib.
I have never had to do this with any of the Bock or Pilot nibs I have had. Now Lamy Safari nibs, that's different.
You didn't mention that finer nibs will have feedback or that the paper quality will effect smoothness. Writing fiigure of eights on the backing card on a Clairfontaine pad can help.
Micromesh should only be used on home done modified nibs ime.

You can use micromesh with any type of nib. I have successfully used such sandpaper - actually multi-sided nail sandpaper, not everywhere you can get micromesh - on several of my nibs.
There are many brands that use Bock. They don't scratch, but they can have a baby bump, in which case you'll have to use micromesh to fix it.

Pilot kakuno nibs are really feedbacky. I use a 5000 sandpaper to ad a light pad to them and then I always Micromesh after and they feel 100x better

Just pick up an exacto knife and run it through the tines while the nib is attached to the feed. Then remove the nib and remove any bits of rough plastic in the feed ... Take dental floss, put it through the breathing hole in the nib and run it through the tines a few times and voila... U have a smooth and wet nib.

That's a flex pen (if it has the original nib). I have one, and it's my nicest flexy because it rarely railroads. I'm surprised anyone would try to smooth a vintage flex.
I've just checked the range of nibs which originally came with the Eversharp, there was a Manifold, but you don't have that. From the length of the tines, you seem to have a flex nib, which explains why it felt 'scratchy'. Flex nibs tend to feel scratchy when not used properly. It's a shame to smooth this nib and lose its fine stroke.
I couldn't watch this vid the whole way through. It was too painful watching you destroy this nib.

Just 3 figure 8's on my 0.3 micron makes my pen really scratchy and weird. And sometimes the pen's finish repels ink. 1 micron is fine tho.
Is this... Normal? What am I doing wrong

I’ve stopped using the micron paper for 98% of the work I do. It’s too finicky. I use 12,000 grit micromesh for almost everything, and will use 5000, 7000, and 9000 grit Emory paper for aggressive smoothing and to cure mild baby’s bottom

@@Pentuner hmm I still sometimes use 1mylar. And on very fine nibs a single single swipe or 0.3 but I really agree with you,. I reshape the nibs of most of the pens o know because sadly very few come out good out of the box. Specially kakunos are too round and don't have much nib in contact with the paper and feel feedbacky. I add a light pad to them with 5000 sandpaper and then polish it up to 12,000!
