And it's impressive that they still remember the 注音符號 (phonetic notations), which I think can be hard to remember if you're not using them much. im taiwanese and was raised speaking chinese, i often find that its very very difficult for anyone who isnt raised chinese to be able to use the language at all, its so complicated, the tones and the sheer expansiveness of the vocabulary is just so impossible to grasp if you learn it as a second languagw

Eddy's Chinese is actually impressive, he can write quite a lot of Chinese, he can express his thought quite clearly in Chinese, and he can understand Chinese quite well. But Brett's pronunciation is great. I'm not saying that Eddy's is bad, I know they both have (very cute!) accents, but when I video chat with them and tell them my Chinese name (an uncommon kind of weird one lol), Brett pronounced it 400% correctly straightaway! So they have their own advantage, just like their violin playing lol!

For those questioning if this is really a 1st grade test in Chinese: I am Taiwanese, and though I don't think this test is for 1st graders that just entered elementary school(because 1st graders will first learn about zhuyin then learn about actual Chinese characters), this test is indeed for beginners and in a very typical Chinese exam format in Taiwan.
Hard to say, this may be 1st grade mandarin in Taiwan right now I’m from malaysia, what kids here are learning in grade 1 now is at least twice as hard as what I was learning when I was in grade 1 The same situation may apply to Taiwan

@@alphazeta321 Ah, I don't think so. You find it hard because you are not surrounded by Chinese characters every day. When I was a kid, I found it fun to practice recognizing Chinese characters because I wanted to figure out what the signs on the streets mean. First we recognize the shape of each character, and then we learn to write them. Chinese characters are basically symbols. If you have images in your mind when you see the characters, you will find it more easy to remember them.

Your mandarin is really impressive!! Just a little reminder that 國語 means the language of your country, the phrase itself doesn't stands for mandarin(Chinese). So for instance, in Indonesia, 國語 can also be Indonesian and not necessary mandarin.
@@unknownch.3327 It depends on whether you want to learn traditional or simplified Chinese. Traditional uses 注音, and simplified uses romanization. You can check if your mother language is connected to English or Chinese. It might be easier for Japanese to use 注音 because Japanese is actually related to traditional Chinese, while you may feel easier to learn Chinese with romanization if you're an English speaker. Btw if you want to go abroad, another point to note is simplified is used in China, Malaysia and Singapore. Traditional is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.

As a Taiwanese I laugh so hard at the 來吃我 and 洞下下😂 When I was a kid I used to hate the sentence part so much because you need to come up with your own. You can’t use 哥哥 if 哥哥is already on the test tho, and when the test ask you to write a word it can’t be a sentence, like 來吃我is already a sentence. You guys did pretty great tho I’m really impressed👍 I just graduated from high school and already starting to forget how to write Chinese letters😂
@@helpmeiamstuckinahumanbody17 we can just use our phone to type out the word. But if we don’t have our phone or dictionary, for Taiwanese we write the Zhuyin for the word, which is like the spelling and it tells you what the word sounds like. Just like Eddy said even for the same word it has different intonation, by combining different sounds we’re able to tell the meaning. That’s how children under grade 1 write tho, but as you get older we’re kinda forbidden to write Zhuyin because it’s too easy and Chinese letters are much easier to read :)
I've got to say, this pattern of Eddy consistently doing 'better' when they put their general skill at something to the test is kind of obvious but I really like it how Brett is so gracious about it and there is never any competition between them. Eddy never crows about it and Brett is never resentful. It's so wholesome that they don't compare themselves to each other and just have fun doing this type of thing. 💗

As someone who likes learning languages and is doing so rn (only English and French, I'm a native Spanish speaker) this is sooo funny and interesting, Chinese is real hard
I mean if you want to learn chinese it won’t be hard. Yes it is difficult to learn chinese but I got back to mandarin and I was already at HSK3, now i’m still learning too. I knew some phrases then learned tones which ultimately set me in a better place because I don’t have to try that much to remember tones because I already knew most of the words tones. I’d say try your best and learn from a teacher than an app if you wanna learn.

Born in Taiwan, I went through full education from kindergarten to college there, then emigrated to the US at the age of 27. After spending 40 year abroad, I sometimes have difficulties writing Chinese characters. It amazed me to see that Eddy and Brett could pass the six grade Chinese test without the official Chinese elementary school education. I myself probably would fail the test to tell the truth just because I haven’t used the language on a daily basis anymore.

This is such a surreal bilingual/multilingual experience. Forgetting a word in english and remembering it with your mother tongue then translating it back to english. Sometimes, these mind mash of words can involve three languages. And don't even get me started with obscure idioms or everyday expressions that somehow mixes together, resulting to a weird out of the box statement with no context. 😭😭
I took 4 years of Spanish in high school, then took a semester of modern Hebrew in college. My brain wanted to translate English to Spanish to Hebrew and Hebrew to Spanish to English. The third language getting involved is a very real and very weird thing.
My brain does this with German, English and Spanish and even with two of these languages being related it often barely makes sense. Or I just forget how to properly pronounce the German word so pronounce it the English way and act like it's normal. Usually works and German is supposed to be my native language but even still living in this country it feels like I'm just forgetting how to speak it.
As someone who has experienced 1st grade Chinese, taking a test was a nightmare... It happens very often but it still scares me because the teacher will show off your bad grade to the WHOLE class WITHOUT even warning you.
nah, there are lot of homophones, meaning the words have the same sound but different meaning through hanzi (Chinese characters) representation. That's why tones are crucial and... that's why in Chinese TV you have subtitles for... Chinese films :D I'd say, that , like Japanese, Chinese is a highly contextual language - many things are understood from how the sentence is created. :)

the worst part is theres mandarin and theres cantonese, literally the same characters/words but different pronunciations. i had to learn both and it was soo hard

They are with more strokes not because they are more complicated, but because they are more complete pictures. Let's try comparing two Chinese characters: 龙 and 龍. They both mean "dragon." Which one is easier for you to tell its meaning from the first sight?

went to a chinese school (i’m not chinese) from pre-k to freshman year and this just gave me major flashbacks. i still remember only memorizing the characters for “encircle, box, underline, etc.” just so i could understand the instructions since everything was in chinese. as much as i sucked at it, i loved writing chinese characters though!

At age five, I borrowed a book from the library to study Chinese but didn't get get very far😅🤣😂many Chinese people lived in my grandmother's apartment building and I succeeded in temporarily inviting a little Chinese girl to my grandma's apt. Actually that’s more of the case of mandarin, in cantonese we have more tones and sounds it’s much easier to distinguish...well we’re very proud of our language which sometimes make us better listeners especially in hearing anything out of tune 😁
Mandarin (most widely spoken dialect of Chinese) actually has four tones, not three! Cantonese, meanwhile, has nine. (Only six are phonetic, tho) I think Hokkien has nine as well...? Anyways, the most common dialect has four tones; other dialects can have even more.

The glottal stops and plosives contribute to that. They aren't tones in the same way that phonetic ones are, where 汤 in Mandarin has a flat sound and 糖 in Mandarin rises up, but they're regarded as entering tones.

For those questioning if this is really a 1st grade test in Chinese:
I am Taiwanese, and though I don't think this test is for 1st graders that just entered elementary school(because 1st graders will first learn about zhuyin then learn about actual Chinese characters), this test is indeed for beginners and in a very typical Chinese exam format in Taiwan.
I would say it's 1st/2nd grade Chinese in HK :) (minus the Zhuyin part since kids in HK dun really learn the Cantonese Jyutping)

When I was a kid, I found it fun to practice recognizing Chinese characters because I wanted to figure out what the signs on the streets mean. First we recognize the shape of each character, and then we learn to write them. Chinese characters are basically symbols. If you have images in your mind when you see the characters, you will find it more easy to remember them.

Your mandarin is really impressive!! Just a little reminder that 國語 means the language of your country, the phrase itself doesn't stands for mandarin(Chinese). So for instance, in Indonesia, 國語 can also be Indonesian and not necessary mandarin.

Traditional uses 注音, and simplified uses romanization. You can check if your mother language is connected to English or Chinese. It might be easier for Japanese to use 注音 because Japanese is actually related to traditional Chinese, while you may feel easier to learn Chinese with romanization if you're an English speaker.
Btw if you want to go abroad, another point to note is simplified is used in China, Malaysia and Singapore. Traditional is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.

As a Taiwanese I laugh so hard at the 來吃我 and 洞下下😂 When I was a kid I used to hate the sentence part so much because you need to come up with your own. You can’t use 哥哥 if 哥哥is already on the test tho, and when the test ask you to write a word it can’t be a sentence, like 來吃我is already a sentence. You guys did pretty great tho I’m really impressed👍 I just graduated from high school and already starting to forget how to write Chinese letters😂

But if we don’t have our phone or dictionary, for Taiwanese we write the Zhuyin for the word, which is like the spelling and it tells you what the word sounds like. Just like Eddy said even for the same word it has different intonation, by combining different sounds we’re able to tell the meaning. That’s how children under grade 1 write tho, but as you get older we’re kinda forbidden to write Zhuyin because it’s too easy and Chinese letters are much easier to read :)

I've got to say, this pattern of Eddy consistently doing 'better' when they put their general skill at something to the test is kind of obvious but I really like it how Brett is so gracious about it and there is never any competition between them. Eddy never crows about it and Brett is never resentful. It's so wholesome that they don't compare themselves to each other and just have fun doing this type of thing. 💗

As someone who likes learning languages and is doing so rn (only English and French, I'm a native Spanish speaker) this is sooo funny and interesting, Chinese is real hard
I mean if you want to learn chinese it won’t be hard. Yes it is difficult to learn chinese but I got back to mandarin and I was already at HSK3, now i’m still learning too. I knew some phrases then learned tones which ultimately set me in a better place because I don’t have to try that much to remember tones because I already knew most of the words tones. I’d say try your best and learn from a teacher than an app if you wanna learn.

Born in Taiwan, I went through full education from kindergarten to college there, then emigrated to the US at the age of 27. After spending 40 year abroad, I sometimes have difficulties writing Chinese characters. It amazed me to see that Eddy and Brett could pass the six grade Chinese test without the official Chinese elementary school education. I myself probably would fail the test to tell the truth just because I haven’t used the language on a daily basis anymore.
It’s only an elementary school 1st grade Chinese test, not 6th grade……
The test they did in this video is way too easy for a 6th grader kid. 😂

This is such a surreal bilingual/multilingual experience. Forgetting a word in english and remembering it with your mother tongue then translating it back to english. Sometimes, these mind mash of words can involve three languages. And don't even get me started with obscure idioms or everyday expressions that somehow mixes together, resulting to a weird out of the box statement with no context. 😭😭
I took 4 years of Spanish in high school, then took a semester of modern Hebrew in college. My brain wanted to translate English to Spanish to Hebrew and Hebrew to Spanish to English. The third language getting involved is a very real and very weird thing.
My brain does this with German, English and Spanish and even with two of these languages being related it often barely makes sense. Or I just forget how to properly pronounce the German word so pronounce it the English way and act like it's normal. Usually works and German is supposed to be my native language but even still living in this country it feels like I'm just forgetting how to speak it.
As someone who has experienced 1st grade Chinese, taking a test was a nightmare... It happens very often but it still scares me because the teacher will show off your bad grade to the WHOLE class WITHOUT even warning you.
How about korean, Japanese and vietnamese? The three have their usage problem. You still need studying some Chinese before try answering these things.

nah, there are lot of homophones, meaning the words have the same sound but different meaning through hanzi (Chinese characters) representation. That's why tones are crucial and... that's why in Chinese TV you have subtitles for... Chinese films :D I'd say, that , like Japanese, Chinese is a highly contextual language - many things are understood from how the sentence is created. :)

the worst part is theres mandarin and theres cantonese, literally the same characters/words but different pronunciations. i had to learn both and it was soo hard

It is terrifying, that you can say a word three times, and for a native Chinese speaker that would sound like three different words. OMG, big respect to all Chinese learners and native speakers.
Actually that’s more of the case of mandarin, in cantonese we have more tones and sounds it’s much easier to distinguish...well we’re very proud of our language which sometimes make us better listeners especially in hearing anything out of tune 😁
Mandarin (most widely spoken dialect of Chinese) actually has four tones, not three! Cantonese, meanwhile, has nine. (Only six are phonetic, tho) I think Hokkien has nine as well...? Anyways, the most common dialect has four tones; other dialects can have even more.

@@Ylnaig A phonetic tone is produced through actual speech, which Cantonese has six of. However, Cantonese also uses glottal stops and plosives. Glottal stops interrupt airflow in the vocal tract, whereas plosives block it so that all airflow ceases.
Have you noticed how Cantonese involves much more movement in the throat than Mandarin does? The glottal stops and plosives contribute to that. They aren't tones in the same way that phonetic ones are, where 汤 in Mandarin has a flat sound and 糖 in Mandarin rises up, but they're regarded as entering tones.
