I think Rob Robinette's 90% power soak circuit would work nicely with this mv. I built one in a small enclosure. There's a noticeable attenuation. It's not what one might expect after reading 90% vol reduction but it make a difference. Coupled with the master vol ( linear taper maybe? ) I think you might get yourself down to TV volume ? Hopefully.
Also, for a low wattage amp like the 5e3, there's a very good attenuator design I would try as well. Low Head Room youtube channel has some really great vids. In one , he builds an Lpad type soak. He uses an extra 100 watt resistor to protect the Lpad from smoking like a hash joint 😂

Well done video. The amp sounds great. I installed that master and came to the same conclusion you did. It really isn't that good as a master, but it does help with the blocking distortion you get with these amps. I tried the post master you suggested and didn't like it. I settled on the LARMAR dual pot post master along with the pre master you did. Also with a stock 5e3, you can use the volume of the unused channel as a really good master setting it between 10-12. With essentially 3 masters I can get the volume down to conversational volume.

Nice! I agree that the best use for this pre pi master is to trim some blocking distortion. I may need to try a dual larmar some time...

Great work ! Do you think using a 1m Linear taper pot would even out the usefulness of the taper?

I have this master on a 5f4 tweed super and don’t find it very useful. Nice to chance a few dabs off, but messes with your negative feedback and not good for getting crunch at bedroom volumes.

You made the master volume video! Thanks man. I haven’t done it yet but I did do the 3-way negative feedback switch. The the middle position, no cathode cap, is great! What I didn’t realize is that it quiets the amp a bit, which is great for my situation.

Are you trying to quiet it down or increase preamp crunch?
I wonder if the stock spec output transformer could handle 6L6/5881s with switchable bias resistors for more headroom. There has to be an aftermarket transformer to do just that.
I kinda think 5E3s need an attenuator to keep the peace at home. Unless you've got a soundproof barn all to yourself in the backyard...

    Great video!
I just put a pre-PI MV in my Mojotone (amp class) kit. Between the MV, the unused channel volume, and a Weber MiniMass Attenuator, l feel like I have good control over the volume.
Does anyone know if a linear pot would expand the sweet spot of the MV, or would it go the other way and make it even smaller?

Great video! It sounds like MV tightens the sound a bit my removing blocking distortion. And at higher volumes it does so without reducing the volumes too much. And then you have the opportunity to reduce volumes further without changing the tone too much.
Do you have the stock .1 coupling caps or have you cleaned it up with smaller values?

Linear or audio taper pot? Did I miss that part?
