  • Took the nice weather of Memorial Day to check if any action was happening on the NS Lehigh Line in Pburg NJ. Not long after arriving, NS local H-65 showed up with a trio of EMDs and a "Southern Style" leader. After dropping some cars on the Washington Secondary, they shove back on the main and head for Jutland to perform some more switching.

I like the lead locomotive running long nose forward. Was this train headed to Slateford Jct.?

g bridgman - No, this train was on Norfolk Southern’s Lehigh Line, not the Portland Secondary this time. The Portland Secondary’s tracks actually start just past the signals, branching off from the main.

Hi. Greets from Pennsylvania. I enjoyed this video very much. I know that area a bit as I’m a DL&W fan. Many thanks. I guess I’m not up to date on the latest railfan codes. In the panel where you identify the locomotives, after the info on NS 3421 you have “*LHF*”. What does that mean??
    Thanks again. CAS

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed watching it! When a locomotive is running “LHF” it is an abbreviation for “Long Hood Forward”. That just means they are running the unit in reverse lol.

Hi again. Thanks. I know the term long hood forward, just didn’t associate the letters with it. It seems to me that when I was a kid, all switchers were set up LHF. And the big diesel units which replaced steam were all cab units (FA, PA, and E and F units) with the personnel up front by design. Interesting how this has changed over time. Now I guess that virtually all locomotives are set up with the cab ahead of the heavy stuff for better visibility, though this unfortunately leaves the crew a sitting duck if a big heavy object looms ahead. Thanks again. New subscriber. CAS

@@charlesshivoder2887 Lackawanna ran all their GP7s LHF. The "F" designation was on the long hood end. Some newer NS locomotives were ordered set up for LHF operation, but I'm not sure which ones.

Jay 1 - I use 2. The far-zoom shots are done with a Sony CX405 while the others are done with a maxed out iPhone 6s camera.
