But where did she come from? And how did she make her way into the ornate corridors of Versailles? This video takes a closer look at one of France's most renowned royal mistresses...

Truly a remarkable woman. Honestly I feel she could have even been Louis' queen had they met sooner and had she been born into the proper social class. A beautiful and kind woman who also had the political smarts to maneuver her way around court and high politics. Would have made a wonderful queen had the possibility been there for her.

@@HistorysForgottenPeopleI heard that her living daughter that died might have been the child of the king and her. In the anime chevalier de eon the daughter's spirit is stuck in a skull named Belle. It's a great show.
For those who want to find out more, I recommend Nancy Mitford's biography, "Madame de Pompadour". It's a delicious read - what they wore, what they ate, all the gossip, all the jokes, a portrait of a loving relationship, and a remarkable woman, in Mitford's entertaining style.

Mitford's Louis XIV is written in the same fashion. Amusing and packed with lots of information in a bit of a gossipy manner, a great read, too.
Apologies but I would not recommend her. The best are peimar-sourced Court memoirs. Although they are personal, they give more factual accounts. Mitford, after extensive reading of many memoirs, appears to have either invented information, or uses far too much creative leeway. Primary.sources are the best for gauging a stronger idea.
@@Supernovasalimali You're right, if you want detailed, absolute accuracy, say for a scholarly article or something like that. If you want to get an idea of the atmosphere, and enjoy a well-written, entertaining account, which makes you care about the people and from which you will almost certainly learn something, then Mitford fits the bill. But if there is anything in the court memoirs, available in English, which ticks those boxes, I'm very happy to hear of it.
I watch this documentary everyday. La Marquise de Pompadour is one of my all time favorites of that time

And thank you about the images - I did use a lot more actual portraits this time, as Mme Pompadour seems to have had a lot of them survive, which is always a nice bonus.

I always loved to read about her and know how her life and legacy worked, but the uncomfortableness of French history during 18th century up to early 19th always stopped me! so thank you so much for this video, it meant a world to me💗
Wow, she was just as complex as I expected her to be, but a lot more nicer, since I imagined more ambition in her personality, which of course she had, but wasn't all that defines her character. she wasn't evil which is good, she completely unexpectedly treated the Louis XV's wife with respect which is admirable and although she did fight to hold her position and most importantly the love she had for the king, but unfortunately some of her decisions which were shown throughout her influence on the king, had consequences and ruined so many lives in the future, which I can't say she was directly responsible for or to be blamed for, but the beginning. but as a painter and artist, I admire her the most for the important part she had in arts of her time and name that will be immortal as a hairstyle😁

Mme Pompadour really was unexpectedly nicer than she's often made out to be, especially with how she treated Queen Maria. I think she did still have some ambition, but as you point out, it wasn't her whole reason for being there, and she and Louis genuinely appear to have cared for one another.
She was a smart businesswoman I'll give her that.

I absolutely love Madame de Pompadour, she has to be one of the most amazing female historical figures and is ultimately one of my favorites because of how much she accomplished as a woman of her time. Also, I love your videos and always look forward to seeing who the next historical figure you will educate us about will be. I love learning about so many different people that I have never heard of and learning more for those I have heard of. Would it be possible for you to do a video on Lucretia Borgia and also one on Chevalier d'Eon?

Haha, you're not wrong there! I wonder if Mme Pompadour would have been able to talk her way out of trouble against the Revolutionaries or not? 🤔 Her patronage during her lifetime was amazing; I must admit, I didn't know how much it was until researching her better.

For the question, I may have asked you this, but I don’t remember doing so😭 which of Henry’s wives do you think he loved them most? Putting the fact he didn’t love anyone but himself aside, of course :’)
I lean towards Katherine of Aragon, mainly because she was ok with his indiscretions and didn’t argue with him as Anne would, but nor did she shy away from advising and riding into battle against the Scots. She was raised to be a Queen, and it showed, and Henry himself said that, had they had sons, he wouldn’t have left her. Jane Seymour would be my other guess. She was meek in their dealings, and gave him a son, not to mention, as Lindsay Holiday said, she didn’t live long enough to piss him off💀 But I don’t know if he would’ve continued to be so fond of her had she lived.
I have a theory.. Despite having multiple wives throughout his life, Henry expressed a desire to be buried beside Jane Seymour, whom he considered his favorite wife, in his will.
Ooh, this is a tough one. (And a great question as Jane Seymour is next week's video!) My gut says it was probably Jane Seymour, although I agree with you that I lean towards Katherine of Aragon as well.
I feel it might have been Jane a little more as he actually *chose* her, whereas Katherine (not through her own fault) was pushed onto him somewhat. I do think Henry fell in love with Katherine and cared deeply about her at first, but Jane had qualities that reminded him of his mother (you know I've covered this somewhat Freudian issue in another video 🤣).
Having said that, I also agree that Jane didn't live long enough to do anything wrong! She did prove herself able to bend to his will, as shown when she was warned off meddling in political affairs. And had she lived longer, she might have had more children, possibly more sons, and that would have cemented her position further.

Given the French king’s known proclivities the fortune teller telling all parents their daughter was destined to capture the heart of a king probably wasn’t that far out of reason.
I mean, I had this image in my head of the fortune teller 'revealing' the fortune, waiting for them to leave, waiting for the next girl to come in, then... "Ooooh" (with one hand clasped dramatically to forehead while the other hovers over the crystal ball) "I see...you will win the heart of a king! NEXT!" 😂
