    Thanks for featuring Prehistoric Nature! (I am one of a modeller) We worked to make this as accurate as possible.
    Perhaps the most accurate depiction of Arthropleura on the documentary is that of LOOP. This does have some issues, such as the legs being too thin, but I think it does an excellent job of accurately portraying this animal as a millipede.

    A lot of depictions of Arthropleura like to make it a big scary monster, when in actuality the real animal was probably incredibly docile, given it had no natural predators.

    I think why the various depictions of Arthropluera are shown rearing up like a cobra is probably because centipedes can somewhat rear the front portion of their body off the ground either to defend themselves or to help get a better sense of the environment around them. But some species can also rear their abdomen up off the ground while carrying their offspring.
    Although I wouldn't see an Arthropluera raise its abdomen off the ground to carry its offspring, I can certainly see it raise the front of its body off the ground for intimidating amphibian predators like in Walking with Monsters and possibly assisting in mating like was shown in Life on our Planet.

  • @EvolvedGodzilla360

    I think this arthropod is able to somewhat rear upright, but probably to a certain degree, because I bet if a reared up too far, almost like a snake in a striking position, then maybe it's armor could prevent it from rearing up that far or worse it could break

    I think the reason for black primary color in some interpretations could be bc they’re are speculated to not be related not to centipedes but millipedes may also be why they’re are depicted as herbivorous creatures because millipedes are herbivorous arthropods as I did some digging into internet sources. Absolutely nice tho as much as I hate arthropods is absolutely an overlooked creature that could deserve a little more recognition.

  • @phantomix5693

    Going by how modern day millipedes and centipedes articulate themselves, I think it's logical to assume that Arthropleura would be able to do the same, just not to the extent that it's shown in Prehistoric Park.

    Many of these, like the WWM and Prehistoric Park one, have centipede heads and leg setup, which isn't likely for a millipede. And you missed a few documentary representations of it, such as in First Life and How to Grow a Planet, the latter actually has a unique colour pattern for once. But the LOOP one is generally the best in media. Which I never thought I'd say..

    • @william3100
      @william3100 3 місяці тому

      Well, this thing was much much different than modern millipedes despite the relation. It would probably have a leg setup that would be close to a centipede because centipedes are bigger and thicker than millipedes and would need big enough pinchers to defend itself at times. Which may require a head that shares similarities to a modern centipede.

    • @PaleoEdits
      @PaleoEdits 3 місяці тому

      @@william3100 Thoroughly disagree.

    • @william3100
      @william3100 3 місяці тому

      @PaleoEdits millipedes don't have the wide, flat shell that arthropleura has. This thing obviously looks and logically would be different from modern millipedes. Millipedes can get away with what they have because they are very small bugs. Whereas centipedes are the biggest kind of bug like millipedes today. Thicker legs to support its weight, bigger pitchers to defend itself if the rearing up stance doesn't work, and bigger body overall will require adaptations that modern millipedes don't have.

    • @PaleoEdits
      @PaleoEdits 3 місяці тому

      @@william3100 That's not what I was referring to with leg setup, but the paired leg for each segment - diplopod.

    • @william3100
      @william3100 3 місяці тому

      @PaleoEdits Well, still a big animal and would need thicker, stronger legs. Perhaps one pair of strong legs per segment is more efficient than two sets of legs per segment. Millipedes today can get away with two thin legs per segment because they are pretty small.
      It makes sense for a larger animal to have more weight barring legs with a little less of them, too. Many animal ancestors looked different and had different morphological traits compared to their descendants.
      Edit: we don't even know exactly how many legs they had and therefore don't know how many legs they had per segment. They could've had two legs per segment, or they could've had a pair of legs per two segments.

    9:23 they are depicted as blind because most millipedes and centipedes are usually blind as well. They have eyes, but these eyes are very simple and only can detect lights and shadows, they can't actually form an image. Some species of centipedes, like the ones in the Order Scutigeromorpha, have more complex eyes and quite a good sight, which they use to hunt. But I don't know about any millipede that can actually see. So, Arthopleura being a millipede itself, most likely was blind as well. Another fun fact: the mandibles that we see on centipedes aren't actually their mandibles, but a type of modified legs called 'forcipules', which can inject venom onto their preys. Millipedes are herbivorous, so they don't have it. Their mandibles are quite small as well, and they are usually not visible when we see the animal from above. So puting a pair of giant mandibles like structures in their heads (like most of these depictions do) isn't the most accurate choice. Hope that answers some questions, great video as always!

    0:10 It is actually a millipede itself & it is classified as a member of the class Diplopoda which includes all living millipedes. 3:00 This design looks "almost” resembles Euphoberia another extinct genus of millipede they shouldn’t called it euphoberia because euphoberia hasn’t appeared in popular media as arthropleura which is very unfortunate. 3:21 Arthropleura can sometimes eat some meat to support nutrients to its diet if it wants to like most any other herbivore. The Arthropleura from 2015 Dinosaurs Island was portrayed as very aggressive towards the main characters which herbivores are known for being notorious be very aggressive if provoke or threaten for their main of self-defense.
