- Dreadnought Durango One Ton Swap EP-4: Dana 60 and Custom Three Link Front Suspension for SAS
You've waited long enough! I've finally finished this latest video, and I hope you love it. We are diving into the front end this time. I teardown the IFS stuff to make way for the Dana 60 and my custom three link suspension. This will be one heck of a SAS [Solid Axle Swap].
This time, I make sure to explain what I'm doing more. You'll get an in-depth look at the three link front suspension brackets as well as my tranny crossmember, and who can be disappointed about seeing a Superduty Dana 60 mocked up under a 1st gen Durango?
If you want more frequent updates, catch me on instagram @aired_down
Regarding the outro of the video, I meant every word. If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them for you.
Peace out, and go rock crawling!
Where ya at bro
Yeah, I know. I apologize. I can make a long list of excuses, but it boils down to spending all my time with my kids being Mr. Dad.
I do, however, have a front crossmember and steering box mount all designed and ready to cut out. Waiting on the shop to get a 1/4” plate and a 3/16” plate, but man steel is crazy right now.
@@aireddown813 I understand that. Daddy duties come first. I was just hoping you wasn't completely done. I look forward to seeing your next installment on dreadnought.
@@gregscherf9385 thanks my friend. I’m still here and still dreaming of a completed Dreadnought. I’ve got half of the next video filmed.
Can't wait to see it
Dude this build is going to be so freaking cool once done. I just bought a 2001 Durango 4.7 and been looking for someone with decent SAS videos. Yours kill it…would you be willing to make a breakdown video of all components/companies used? Or would you be willing to make and sell a kit like yours?
I just picked up a 2nd gen Durango to build up. Your video was the first i found. I got to say, your work is impressive and your build is way over the top. Also your video is outstanding. Great video angles with exceptional clear and informative dialog. I got to get my hans on one of your CNA mig gun holders. Great design.
Glad you put a video out. Saw the lizard for sale locally and thought you might have this finished. I totally understand getting back to family. Burnout is real and family misses you as much as you miss them. I run marathons and it’s about a four month training plan. Not many of us are single with no kid anymore. Spending every free hour working on rock crawlers just isn’t happening and you have to do what make YOU happy. Totally excited the project didn’t die and it wasn’t something more serious causing some delays.
Thanks man. Yeah you’ve got to have a reality check once and a while. I’m definitely low on budget right now, but there’s still lots of work I can be doing and making videos of. I bought most of the expensive stuff already thank goodness. If the lizard sells, I’ll have more than enough budget to finish this sucker.
@@aireddown813 I’m currently buying parts and stockpiling myself. I have a Dana 60 to put under my Jeep, and now it’s finding time and money to actually do it. Seeing your build starts putting into perspective how long it takes to do it right instead of slapping it in and finding out what’s wrong later.
@@runningproblem doing it right isn’t the big time problem I’m having 🤣 it’s the kids! But yes it takes forever to really dial it in.
Awesome progress. Been waiting for an update! Glad to see things are going well!
Love the build but I really love the outro. Keep Christ as #1 always!
Thanks my friend. Yessir keep Him number 1 always!
GREAT outro!!
Thank you!
Thank you for the words of blessings you really don't know how much I needed to those words. I love your videos I also have a dodge durango 2003 with 59 and have been thinking about doing the same my family is all for it but I would like to buy the same fabrication hard ware that you made if you have any suggestions where to buy please let me know thank you...
It makes my day to hear that you were blessed! And thank you for the compliments! I had to make all my own brackets from scratch for this thing. Once I have them proven, my plan is to make and sell the kits.
Amen brotha. Keep up the faith!!
do you sell the parts you made?
Hopefully someday. Not at the moment.
It's good to see this build again, but it's great to hear your message. Take care of yourself and your family.
I really like the whole build but I love the speech at the end of this video.
Keep up the good work and best of luck to you and your family 👍👏
Thanks my friend!
From a 23 year active duty Marine corp combat veteran, Thank you for saying that. Most military guys won't say this, but it really mesns a lot. Especially coming for you young guys. You are very much appreciated brother. Respect 🙏 🫡.
this is fantastic been wanting to do this for years, you ever think about making a kit and selling them. I know I would purchase it that's pretty much were I don't have the capabilities to do this .
Thanks! It’s part of my palm to eventually make a kit. Right now I’m in full time dad mode, but I’m hoping to get back out into the shop eventually. Making this a kit is something instill plan on doing at some point.
Hope all is Well Daniel, I miss the channel but I understand life and Gods will. Hopefully there's a point where this can start again.
Thank you my friend. All is well! I’ve been enjoying my kids and watching them grow. I just saw the Durango today. It’s gathering quite a lot of dust. I hope to get back at it one of these days. Hope all is well for you!
I can appreciate how you closed this video out, I was just curious if you finished the project even if it's not a video?
Thanks. It was my intention to keep plugging along, but it’s literally just sitting there in basically the same shape it was in the video. Except it’s been removed from the lift and put in the corner. It’s not all bad though. The last few years I’ve been living the dream with the family watching my kids grow up. I’ll get back to it someday.
Man I need someone to do this for my dakota. But I’m trying to do either dana 70 or 80 front and rear. Plus swap a big ass engine in there.
That’ll be dope
I HAVE NEVER COMMENTED ON UA-cam EVER BUT THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO DO TO MY 2002 DODGE DURANGO FOR YEARS JUST HAVEN'T HAD THE TIME OR SPACE CANT WAIT TO SEE IT FINISHED
Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out, love your channel, keep it up!
How the fuck do you only have 2.26k subs!?!?!? A1 vids man, thoroughly enjoyed, great quality, and you have the knowledge/skill to back it up.
Thank you for saying that. I think the algorithm hates how infrequent my uploading has been. I’ll get back to uploading more frequently hopefully soon
@@aireddown813 And I'll be here to view them. Keep it up man & thanks for the motivation to get started on my D60 OBS Bronco swap.
Just so you know thanks for all the help .picking up my 04 ford dana 60s this weekend starting on the dango soon
I did the samething. Dana 60s front coil overs, and rear, on 37"...it is a great truck.
I'd love to put one tons under my 3rd gen Dakota. What rears did you use? I think I heard you say Ford but can you be more specific
That would be great for sure. My axle set is from a 2004 Superduty. They are the fine thread lug studs. Front is a Dana 60. Rear is a Ford (Sterling) 10.5”.
@@aireddown813 thank you
Nice
I know this was a year ago but every time I watch this video segment it just fascinates me on how the dodge durango was a underdog put down by the industry that build it sure it has it failures what vehicle doesn't. this vehicle has so many options and changes a dodge durango owner has if he has the time and funds when i saw you starting this build it made the hair stand on my head it's a monster wow! "Excellent!"
Thank you for the great compliment. I’m not done with the series yet, even though I’m taking a bit of an unexpected break. I’ll get back on the horse soon I hope.
great videos showing what it takes to do this type of conversion..I have a 92 dakota 4x4 and would like to do this exact same thing...Do you sell the components as a kit..ie: all the formed brackets etc.or can you lead me to the company for all the needed parts, etc...Your work and quality is the best ive seen and ive been looking around for a while now...any info and response sure would be appreciated...thanks again, jb
Hey JB. I haven’t been able to produce any brackets for these conversions unfortunately. I had to take a break from the crawler world both for my kids and financially. I’ll hopefully get back in at some point. I don’t really know of anyone who has done Durango/Dakota specific components. Sorry my friend.
I have a 2000 dodge durango and now I want this done to my truck lol
So here iam binge watching this guy build this family crawler. Then we get to the end where he has this come to Jesus moment….dude! I literally had the same thing happen to me!!!! Crazy. Thier was a moment in my life when my crawler became my God I mean I spent EVERYTHING I had on it, time, energy, and money. So after a spiritual awakening I sold it and committed to my wife and 4 kids. I was good to go from there. Then once I got things into perspective (which took me 4 years) I slowly got back into it with my wife and kids and now it’s something we do as a family. Things are back into proper order and within the bounds the Lord has set.
So hey “aired down” guy….I’m with you brother I get it. I appreciate the video! I appreciate men who know thier place as sons of God and Fathers! Maybe I’ll see you on the trails sometime
Thanks my friend! I’m glad to hear I’m not alone out there. It can be very hard to put aside your passion for your family, but there’s big blessings for those who do.
Christ is the main focus everything else will fall into its place I subscribed not just because your talented fab work but you talking about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ way to go my man God will continue to bless you I'm shore of that .
Thank a lot my friend! God bless.
If this is a 3 link front then what's with the second upper mount? Are you just giving yourself the option to run the link on either side? Great looking build so far!!!
I’m surprised you are the first to ask. Because space is tight on either side, and because I couldn’t make up my mind which side to put the upper on, I left my options open. I can put it on either side as the build progresses.
We miss ya brother, Can't wait for an update !
Thanks for reaching out man. I miss working on this project. Hoping to get out there again soon.
Are you going to be putting another video out soon? Not trying to pressure or rush you, this is just something I'd love to do to my dango one day its already got a 6 inch lift but the company went out of business and I want to go bigger but no one makes any bigger than like 5
I’ve got a lot of the next video filmed, I just have to get to editing it. I’ve had a difficult time getting any work done now that my oldest is in school. It’s got me running around all over the place.
Great outro brother in Christ!! Wish I would have found your channel earlier but I'm here now and you have a new subby!!
Thank you brother! Hopefully I’ll make some new stuff one day.
Always worth watching a vid of ifs going bye bye
did u end up finishing the build? would love to see it done. my truck sits the same way in the video i need some help
Hey there. The Durango sits in the same state as the end of this video. Family first.
Good words man... It took me 8 years to put my Jeep together because I put my family first. I don't have wontons and links and 4ds, or whatever people think you need, but I have my family to enjoy it with me.
Yessir. This terrible thing happens where if you ignore your kids when they are young, they ignore you when they are older, and then you are the only one enjoying all that work you did to spend time with them.
Just came across your videos man that are great. just a question. do you sell the brackets for this SAS?
We don't sell them right now. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to complete this build. It came down to the kids or the rig, and I picked the kids. Then I lost most of the tools I was using at the shop. I'll kick it back up when life cools off a bit.
I'm in the process of building a Durango. what doubler tcases were you planning on going with
I’m hoping to run the NP205 magnum box setup from ORD, but at this point I’d be happy with a JK Rubicon 4:1 case if I could find one for a reasonable price.
AMEN TO FAMILY BOSS MAN. And u do great work. I like to be able to get the money together I need to build my 93 PRELUDE the way I want. An pass it down to my youngest son. One day maybe when life isn't so hard an money is so tight. I have a 06 durango with the 4.7 it runs ok. the durango u did looks Very Sharp. Keep up the great work. May God Keep Blessing U and Ur Family..!
Thank you for your blessing! I pray God richly blesses you and yours.
@@aireddown813 thank u Sir that means a lot my good Man.
Hey Brother... Show those kiddoes how to hold the GoPro and get that awesome durango together.. or I just got done building a super budget friendly HF powered gokart. Great small scale project to include kiddos on...
Just found your channel. Love your style.
Thanks my friend. I think once the Durango makes it’s way to my garage from the shop, it’ll be the perfect time to get the kids helping. The girls stay focused for about 5 minutes before they’re off dumping the bolt bin out on the floor.
@@aireddown813 mine are in they're 20's i know all about what you speak!! Lol
@Aired Down Wouldn't it have been much easier to mount the cab on a different chassis?
I’m not sure. Maybe. If there was a better chassis, I would’ve just kept the body from the better chassis. I’m not married to dodge by any means. It does seam like this is about as good as I can get for a family rig on the cheap (cheap base vehicle). Several people mention placing the Durango body on a JK chassis, but i don’t have that kind of money. If only the Durango wasn’t independent suspension. Haha
LOL hahaha love the intro dialogue. almost British
man you really spoke to me with the outro. thank you
Really admire you for your comments at the end of Episode 4. Would love to see the final project.
Thanks! I’m ramping back up on working on it. I’m hoping to be driving it around this spring.
I've never been religious. But still, sometimes I talk to God. I hope he hears me.
You should consider reading through the New Testament. Then you can hear from him and learn a whole bunch of good stuff.
A man so I just got a 04 f 250 rolling chassis
Priorities! God bless you and your family.
What’s the chances of getting a set of those frame side link mounts? I’m doing a SAS on a ‘98 Dakota. You’re doing great stuff man, love it
Chances are pretty good. Gotta make sure they work. But if I’m not mistaken, the Dakota has a C channel frame while the Durango is boxed, so I don’t know if they’ll work?
@@aireddown813 I’ll take a look at tomorrow and see. You might be right, I know the rear portion is C channel but after watching this video I assumed it was only the rear is C channel
Thank you Sir! Much appreciation for the message and the great content! I’m always eager to see what you post next , certainly worth the wait , take your time and use it where it’s most important. We understand.
Btw your fab is on an other level.
Take care
Thanks Brad! I appreciate your compliments.
Amen brother. Good meeting you at 4wp last month.
Yes it was! I hope we meet again.
VERY SERIOUS INQUIRE...How much would you charge to prefab the mounts used on the Frame. I am about to do a SAS on my 03 4.7l Rango and honestly doing it on limited time. Anything I could get to save me the Fab time Id consider purchasing.
I’m not in a place wheee I feel comfortable with the performance and geometry of this system yet. And my time a in severe demand at the moment. I’m just not prepared to produce these at the moment. Sorry man, but the time is coming when I’ll have these ready.
Ok. Im going for 33s on a Trail Rig. I have a 60Front and 70Rear from a 02-3 Ram 2500 I have been dieing to put under my 03 Rango and I do not have the means of CNC or Bender. The Barns kits are ok but what you created capping the Frame and Integrating the Transmission Mount...thing of beauty. If you ever in the next several months decide to go forward on ever just a few of these, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I have another buddy who Trail Rides with me with another 03 Rango Im sure would be Interested. With near no Support for the Dakota and Durango as far as Suspension Mods it would be an opening to a whole new world of Offroading for those of us left with a Torsion Key Only Lift. Could I get a means of Contacting you outside of UA-cam?
@@jamesrobinson5801 thanks for the compliments my friend! One thing for sure on this system: it is designed for some seriously big tires. The geometry will be pretty far off for 33s. But a few simple changes to various link mount spacing a should fix that.

You're a strong Christian and thank you for being "that"...!
Thank you. I don’t really feel strong, but I haven’t quit yet. Haha
Love this as a Christian myself. Social media is the modern day Tower of Babel.

If u post anything that goes against that order strangers who hates God’s order starts to attack. Any plans on chopping off that radiator support ? I did that to my WJ when I had it a few years back and I gained about 3 inches of ground clearance. I basically made a " box " out of plate and was able to bolt it right up ; using the factory holes in the unibody ( where the tow hooks bolt in).

I haven’t done the front yet, and the rear is bandaided together with a 1330 to 1350 combo joint on the stock Durango drive shaft.

Hi, would consider selling the mounts or even the cad files for this swap?? Love your work. I can appreciate the outro also.
Thanks man. The plan is to sell the mounts eventually as a kit. Right now my life is bananas, but when I get my life back together, I’ll be back to finish the Durango and produce a kit for the work I did.
Sounds good. How would I get ahold of you to get in line for a kit?
@@matthewdurant6263 I’ll announce on UA-cam and Instagram when they are available. Feel free to message me here or on Instagram as well.
That's some top-shelf fab work.
What year is the axle? I'm looking into an SAS for my '04 Ram and I found a screaming deal on an '04 axle. But everything I read says '05+ is the way to go. I really don't know if the '05 is that much better. Truck is riding on the 35s it had when I bought it, but I'm looking hard at some 46" XZLs. IFS just ain't gonna cut it.
Thanks John! I’m using an 04 superduty axle here.
The 05+ is wider, with bigger axle tubes and bigger knuckles. The unit bearings are better also, and accept 35 spline stock. You can also use the larger 1550 U joints in them. The 05+ is probably the better way to go.
However, like you, I got an outrageous deal on my front axle ($200), and I’ll be adding a free spin kit, chromo u joints, plus I widened it and trussed it, so it’ll be stronger than an 05+ in nearly every way and wider too (73.5” WMS)
@@aireddown813 Thanks for the added info. I was looking at all the beefy upgrades for the '04. By the time you widen it, truss it, and add the reamed unit bearings for 35-spline outers it seems like it should definitely be at least as strong as the '05. But I can't quite tell if it would still be cheaper. A $200 '04 sounds great, but the 35-spline hubs are 3-400+ a pair. That puts it right at 5-600... which is what I'd pay for an '05. Both would be getting custom shafts and new internals, so that's all a wash. And you can do all the same mods on an '05 for an even stronger axle. Paralysis by analysis. This is exactly why I never finish anything.
@@johnterpack3940 I’m exactly the same way. Eventually I just force myself to pull the trigger and move on. If I were you, I’d get the 05+. The most important deciding factor for me to continue on with the 04 rather than sell and buy an 05+ was the pumpkin location in relation to my frame with the 04. It sits further inboard on the 04, and widening the short side put it in the perfect spot.
@@aireddown813 Thanks. I'll do that then.

Thanks my friend! I don’t plan on taking this long again for updates. I will be much more swift budget permitting 😆
What adapters did you use for drive shafts from transfer case the dana 60 and the Sterling rear end
Right now I just have the stock rear drive shaft adapted with a 1330 to 1350 combo U joint to the Sterling. I don’t have a front drive shaft out in yet. At some point, I’ll have a 1350 double cardan front and a 1410 rear with a different transfer case

44 inch Boggers would look sweet on this ...not sure how they'd do grooved and siped compared to street compound Mickey Thompson . I need a winter set of tires ... AMEN 💪🏼🙏🏼 👍🏼🥰
I don't know if you do it, but everytime you change out the wire in your welder, blow out the liner with compressed air. I used to weld aluminum crew boats with a Miller, and 8 out of ten times it started acting up, it was build up in the sleeve. The the other times, it would usually be the brass tensioner roller. I didn't like the the steel ones to much, they slipped all the time.
I never once thought to do that. Thanks for the pro tip!
Good for you and glad you have readjusted your priorities to yourself and your family.
