    In the manga spinner is the narrator of MVA and there was a scene moved to season 6 and some cut especially with re-destro. Over all, the way it’s directed in the manga puts on more emphasis on spinner and makes his story feel more complete, even if literally he doesn’t get much more. To counter that I really like how this episode was handled

    One thing to look back and realize in retrospect is that for the USJ incident, Shiguraki brought what was described as the dregs of society, the ones who fell in between the cracks. If you recall, there were a loooot of heteromorphs there. In fact, the very first criminal of the show was a shark heteromorph.
    Like, some people are saying this is an undercooked plotline, and maybe that's true from the perspective of Shoji's storyline, but there have been hints of this going on from the beginning. It's us as an audience who didn't look any further. Like, "of course the bad guys have a bunch of monster-looking guys! They're the bad guys!" But once you get into thinking about the _why_ , it all makes so much sense.
    It's just never been in focus because we've mostly seen the world through the lenses of non-heteromorphs.
    But, like with everything else in the hero society, a lot of the problems of disenfranchised people got swept under the rug, whether it's people with unsuitable quirks, dangerous quirks, etc. The heteromorphs are a continuation of that theme. They're another underline in the emphasis that the world of MHA was not okay.
    It becomes more and more apparent that the society All-Might was holding together had serious flaws and imperfections, like cracks in a damn that was waiting to release a floodgate, but he kept it together through pure strength and will. Once he shattered, everything else did too.

      especially mutations.
      eri's quirk is unlike any other quirk in her family line and is more similar to overhaul's quirk than her own father or mother's. mutations in quirks happen, and as it turns out, shoji is a mutation.
      his family don't have arms like his, meaning that to the rural people he was born among, he was probably seen as a cursed child. he's a mix of toga and spinner's backstories.

    Now that we know about Shoji's childhood, if we look back into S3 when the 1A students were doing dorm tour Shoji's room was just empty with a matress and desk. Todoroki thought Shoji was a simplist but Shoji said he does not have desire for materials.
    That's probabaly how he grew up as a kid. Maybe not even a room.

      Never thought about this, you raise a grat point. At the time I thought his big body wouldn't let him have a lot of things in his room anyway. Maybe that's prejudice on my part. It can also be the case that he does in fact like being a minimalist not only because of his abusive childhood, but maybe because rural areas are usually some of the poorest, especially in Japan. Maybe the village didn't forcefully take things away from him, but instead he was just raised poor. In any case, I really liked your reinterpretation of the earlier seasons with this added context. I wonder if this can be seen in other episodes where he appears.

    Hiding your true appearance, or even true self to avoid scaring people is an unfortunate reality. Truth be told, I think both ways of rising up against oppression and prejudice have their merits. But I guess that’s the hardest choice for a lot of people.
    Truth be told, I feel really bad for Spinner. While he may not have wanted to be the face of this cause, he definitely cared on some level. But that care he had was physically warped into whatever he is now by All for One.
    On one hand, I would want to support a movement like this, because truth be told, a lot of people, whether intentionally or not, have hurt heteromorphs, and society has enabled that kind of behavior.
    But on the other hand, I can’t say that attacking a hospital is really a great way to prove the point that heteromorphs deserve equal treatment. It’s sad to say, but if All for One loses, then many of these people would be thrown in prison and seen as nothing more than criminals to the public. Obviously, I don’t blame them for acting the way they are though. It’s not fair that they have to make the choice to be strong against unwarranted discrimination that was thrown against them.
    Nothing about any of this is fair. But I guess that’s my main point. How should we choose to rise up against an oppressive world? Time is one of the main things that will tell.

    HETEROMORPHS RISE UP!
    While it hasn’t been at the forefront exactly, there have been a lot of instances of heteromorph prejudice that we’ve seen before this. Sometimes not even intentionally. Shoto Todoroki called the chief of police a “mutt,” and a member of Class 1-B saying that octopuses creeped her out to Shoji’s face. And then of course there’s the Creature Rejection Cult from last season. It’s a genuine problem that some people, heroes included, can gloss over at times.
    That leads us to here. Two different perspectives. Should heteromorphs tear down the corrupt system that enabled this kind of prejudice? Or should they prove the prejudice people wrong by becoming a part of that system? Either way, it’s hard to say whether or not that grudge will ever truly disappear.
    Biggest regret here though? Accepting those quirks from All for One. By manipulating the emotions of those who were wronged by society, he’s using their cause to further his own agenda. And now, the only person who could possibly understand what was going on, can barely speak properly.
    Ultimately, this cause was part of a bigger picture that speaks to the corruption of hero society, and changing the world for the better...

      There's a scene in Jump Force (the fighting game, I loved it despite what a lot of people said) where whenever Deku is team leader in a fight against Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z, Deku immediately calls him a villain to which Piccolo responds in surprise at the comment. I always thought it was unintentionally hilarious in a fucked up way.

    IMO as a manga reader, there was some important Spinner content that got cut from the anime, but even if the anime did include those scenes, the whole Heteromorph subtheme in the grand scheme of the story would still ultimately feel half-baked.

    I can't really explain it, but the sadness I felt when Spinner was shown all bulky and barely able to talk, man, a big hole opened in my stomach. He's not my favorite character from the series or the villain cast, but he kinda felt like the most relatable, so I was always cheering for him in the back of my mind. Even if he didn't really want to be the spokesperson for the heteromorphs' cause, he would finally get his time to shine and not only be part of something good, but lead it, remembering how he always felt kind of aimless in life and full of frustration but lacked convictions to do something about it or follow a cause...
    But now he's lost his agency and to me it just feels like he's died and we're just watching a corpse with his face moving along to All For One's tune, a real tragedy, to see someone I still had hope for just loosing all chance

    As long as I lived, I'll NEVER forgive BONES for axing and ruining Spinner's character arc and development back in S5, he's literally my favorite character in League of Villains
    At this point, when Shigaraki said Spinner is waiting for him to show him the "horizon", it wouldn't make sense to anime-only, because BONES cut out the reason why they share such a strong bond after My Villain Academia, and they also cut out the part Spinner saw the first horizon Shigaraki created at the end of that arc

    As far as Spinner in the manga is concerned, you're not missing too much compared to the anime. All of his scenes and the major beats are the same, with the sole exception being the removal of most of his narration from MVA. Even this is mostly just there to act as a POV for the arc and deliver exposition. Any insights into his character from the narration can be inferred from the anime as well, albeit not quite as strongly.

    The manga does have a bit more of this plot-line regarding the heteromorphs, but It’s biggest problem as a complete story is that it is a bit undercooked considering the fact that thematically I do think it is as important as the Todoroki plot-line

    • @DWargs
      @DWargs 2 місяці тому +11

      I don't think it's undercooked at all. We as an audience have just been too blind to see that Horikoshi has been cooking this the whole time. We just automatically accepted that there was a Shark bad guy or a slime bad guy, or a bunch of monstrous looking people helping Shiguraki during the USJ incident, even when we were told he brought in the most desperate dregs of society. We just accepted that the bad guys had monster people, because the bad guys always had monster people.
      In retrospect, it's always been there as part of this world. We just didn't realize it.
      We haven't had it in focus because the story mainly follows non-heteromorphs from the city.
      it's yet another problem that All Might couldn't solve with his fists that has boiled over like with all the other cracks in the society he held together.

    • @ManiacForStorysyMusi
      @ManiacForStorysyMusi 2 місяці тому

      @@DWargs Thematically I totally agree with you. The reazon I think it´s a bit undercooked is because the perspective of heteromorphs was just properly introduced. Sure, since MVA and since then we have gotten things with a lot of implications... but without seeing it in much depth. We have seen the perspective of many people who felt thru the cracks and how that happened to them little by little, but we get that for heteromorphs in the final battle of the series when things are in the most extream context. We don´t even get to see any representation of how anyone could reach the point of being a part of this mob... we are just told All for One is behind this campain...

    • @latewlk
      @latewlk 27 днів тому

      As someone also living in the U.S. it’s a mixed bag. There is unfortunately plenty of racism Asians of different backgrounds experience here, but certainly not everyone is like that. It’s probably pretty similar to how bigotry is described in the show, exists everywhere, but is more extreme in rural communities where people aren’t as diverse. It’s a general attitude that often is reflected by society, but there are plenty of people like class 1-A who think it’s horrible and fight against it. I used to live in a smaller city in a conservative area, and we had a transfer student from East Asia one year. She was wonderful and was a great friend to me and other people I knew, but she also experienced mean comments and jokes from some students. It really depends on a lot of things. The average American will say they believe discrimination is bad if they are asked, but unfortunately not everyone is always aware of when they are partaking in discriminatory behavior and need to be called out to understand they are being hurtful

    As a black guy I don’t really like the idea of not sticking up for yourself. The mere idea of you going against your abuser “setting society back 30 years is dumb” I feel like a lot of change in society has been made through fighting back. yes peaceful protest and stuff are needed too but I always hate the idea of always having to turn the other cheek. They do the hospital thing to give the heroes the moral high ground but why the fuck is kurogiri in a hospital with people?!?!

    • @ron4tron
      @ron4tron 2 місяці тому +1

      It's a good point, and that's why I don't really think that it's as clear as painting those fighting back as entirely wrong. They're even being told to "martyr themselves," when we know that's ultimately what's going to happen to a lot of these people. At the same time, current society is clearly flawed, and change needs to occur (even Deku knows this). The current system *is* corrupt, regardless of whatever Shoji may see as the "right" way to respond. And yet, their cause is only being pushed for the benefit of All For One.
      As Shoji says, "don't let them take advantage of your scars"... well, that's exactly what All For One is doing. He doesn't care about their cause beyond how it benefits him, and he's destroying the mind of an individual who actually could've spoken for the oppressed in Spinner.
      As for Kurogiri being held in a hospital with people... well, I can understand why Kurogiri would be in a rehabilitation facility alongside others being rehabilitated and assessed by doctors. But as for why they could've move him prior to the attack, I'm not too sure... I guess the villains would know that the heroes were aware of their plan, but I still can't think of a real reason myself.
      EDIT: Read other comments. Apparently, the hospital is partially evacuated, but some were in such bad condition that they could not be moved. People were also evacuated from Jaku Hospital prior to Shigaraki's awakening, which kinda... destroyed it.
      Central Hospital is one of the few fully functioning hospitals available, to continue research on him.

      I'm not black, but I feel like this is the point. The heroes in the series have an idealistic view of society. Nothing is wrong, and even the things that are wrong are being fixed and citizens shouldn't do anything. They imagine they live in a utopia guided by themselves. The villains are the opposite. Everything is wrong, heroes are enabling it, it has to come crashing down to build a utopia guided by themselves no matter the damage it would cause in the moment.
      Neither of them are correct, and if either one of them got what they wanted, awful things would happen and society would suffer. Both of them are in the wrong. If everyone truly understood each other then they could work together to truly change society for the better, but nobody is willing to since they both see each other as delusional extremists.

    • @chronosclaimsall
      @chronosclaimsall 2 місяці тому

      It's not merely the idea that "going against your abuser" is gonna set society back, it's the fact that they're not actually fighting for the cause they think they are. It's like if Martin Luther King used his advocacy for black Americans to spur them into a rebellion so that he could be President or something. It's taking a good cause and making it into something disingenuous. The riot would set them back 30 years because "Heteromorphs fought on the side of AFO, the big bad evil guy trying to destroy us all."
      Is the cause worthy? Yes. Do they deserve to fight back? Yes. But they are currently fighting the people that are trying to keep everyone else safe, *including* them. They are fighting people who currently do not know their issue exists, but would probably be willing to learn and enact the changes where they can. The guy speaking on behalf of Spinner even says that discrimination has gone down in cities (obviously hasn't disappeared, but gone down) which means that SOME progress has been made. This riot would demonize heteromorphs in the eyes of the public and probably increase discrimination in the cities again. That's what Shoji means when he says they'll be setting society back 30 years.
      Side note: I'm pretty sure Kurogiri was in the hospital because it was the only place with equipment they could use to do research on him or something like that. I think his location was meant to be a secret though so they probably weren't expecting the hospital to be attacked originally, and my the time they found out the riot was heading there it was probably too late to try and move him.

      We need to take a step back and remember this is a war and that most of Japan is overrun with criminals from 6 of 7 jails. The hospital is one of the last places left to defend and even then they are so stretched thin. Kurogiri is the key to this war, you can't just throw him in some dark abandoned hole.
