    it's funny to see that Strider was voiced by Gray Fox and the Grand Master by Revolver Ocelot in this version(both voice-actors unfortunately passed away long time ago.)

      The Mega Drive port was released in 1990 and solely on a 8 meg cartridge and still puts to shame the PC Engine port which was released in 1994 and requires a PC Engine + a CD add-on + the Arcade Card! Amazing what the Mega Drive can do on stock hardware. Hellfire, Golden Axe or Puyo Puyo 2 are others examples of superior Mega Drive versions compared to PC Engine CD versions despite the differences in format and release dates!

    • @slavetometal8529
      @slavetometal8529 7 років тому +8

      Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Mega Drive also has horrible PC Engine conversions. Devil's Crush is way superior in sound and visuals than the Mega Drive version. Also the colors of Lords Of Thunder are much better on the TurboDuo than the more powerful Sega Cd version. Years has nothing to do with quality products. What makes the difference are the game developers or programmers. Experience is everything. Also let's not forget that the PC Engine has an 8-Bit processor, unlike the Sega Genesis 16-BIT. Also, graphic wise, Street Fighter Champion Edition is better on the PC Engine.

    • @yohkom.7988
      @yohkom.7988 7 років тому +9

      Devil Crash looks better on Mega Drive! PC Engine has stretched visuals due to the flawed resolution (256x224) vs proper ratio and sharp graphics on Mega Drive (320x224). And while the main table has better graphics on PCE the bonus tables look infinitely better on MD. Also the MD version has tons of extra...
      Lords of Thunder is quite a joke of a port, it has some improvements such as added parallax or better scoring system but on other hand some basic things such as enemies hit detection (the flickering when we hit them) have been removed for no reason. In short it should have been the best version but obviously it was partly toned down on purpose.
      Street Fighter II has better graphics on PCE for the most part but the lack of parallax ruins it, it looks flat like a pancake! Not to mention some funny fails such as the sliding elephants at Dhalsim stage... Also the Mega Drive version has better presentation since it's fullscreen vs reduced screen size on PCE. Also the MD version has graphics details which are lacking on PCE such as the moon at Ryu stage. But again, while Street Fighter II makes full use of the PCE capabilities (it was developed in-house by NEC Home Electronics + probably with some help from Hudson) same can't be said about the MD port which was developed by Capcom on lazy mode since resolution, sound and colors could have been better. Some hackers already improved the voices, sound effects and colors (though colors is subjective) but the resolution would need a complete rework. Still the MD port is the best version of its time but it's a shame that Capcom underused the Mega Drive capabilities.

    Strider is actually a licensed game. it's based on a manga that is fairly obscure. capcom would have to buy the license to make a new game. something they did back in the late 90's with strider 2. seeing how capcom is refusing to take any chances i doubt they would bring back strider. hell, they refuse to bring out anything megaman and that series have a large following.

    All in all, this is a pretty solid game. The voices and cut scenes really add to the gameplay. Though, I don't like the sound that is heard when Strider uses his sword. Everywhere else, it makes that "SHING" sound. But in this game, it sounds kind of generic and not quite as epic or satisfying.

    An interesting translation of the arcade Strider, with the usual CD-ROM additions. Video game designers have always suffered from Hollywood Envy. It's an embarrassment, and the endless cut-scene interruptions disrupt the arcade's flow. The remixed music is very good, again, a product of its era, but this also demonstrates developers' desperate need to get away from "video games," with pixel art graphics, chip-tune music, and arcade gameplay. Japan suffered from the same Puritanical guilt as the Americans. If only we could create digital movies, and not children's toys! Then we'd be validated! Anyway, that's my take on the broader issues surrounding PCE Strider (which, as a video game, is pretty good).

    • @slavetometal8529
      @slavetometal8529 7 років тому +2

      Hollywood Envy is not the issue here. Back in the 90's, "Cinema Cut Scenes" was POPULAR and high in demand. It was the "Next Big Thing" in the world of video games. Then in the mid 90's, "Real Motion Video" was on top. But it didn't last long. Right after that Polygon graphics was the new contender. Today well pretty much nothing is impossible. 2D graphics and multi-scrolling are almost a thing of the past. And yes, I also agree that this is a bad conversion of Strider after so much speculation back in the days.

  • @JeanetteTherese
    @JeanetteTherese 11 років тому +2

    Cadash. Ok. Bad example. I haven't played my TG-16 in 15 or so years. Emulated the arcade a few back and they seemed close enough. Still a fairly impressive game for a Hu-Card. Splatterhouse is missing stuff due to censorship and hardware. Still an impressive port and the controls feel tighter. Even SFIICE, which is also my favorite, is missing layers and has some pretty sketchy sfx.
    Now I want to fire it up. Time to bring out the CRT. Hope it still runs?

    I will give you the sound effects and even the graphics. But the music? This port has redbook audio. The music is basically arranged versions of the arcade. I love the Genesis/MegaDrive (all systems really), but the music sounds exactly like one would expect from SEGA's system.
    What I don't like about this version is that the music tracks change too much throughout a level.

The arcade vesrion is second best as there is no lag and the sound is more clear. As a kid I played strider alot as it was my favorite game. I preffered to play it at a local arcade as the genisis version of it lagged. The music in this version is the best in the series. My favorite song is Raid! There are more frames of animation than on the Genny port. But most of the levels seem more devoid of color though. It seems the hardware struggles more pushing large sprites, but I find the game seem better programmed around those limitations. The Genny port always felt a bit rushed to me.

But no, this had to look like utter shit (thankfully not like Golden Axe). Cadash and Splatterhouse are both excellent arcade ports... and they were HU-Card. Hell, look what Capcom did with a (20mb) Hu-Card. They created a port of SFIICE that looks better than the Genesis version. Konami created the masterpiece Rondo of Blood. Etc, etc, sigh...

    Well the series has aged a lot since its debut in the arcades (1989 to be precise), but back then, it's fast gameplay and replay value made the game worthy of being a classic both in Japan and overseas; Strider 2 was also praised, because of its better music, better graphics, even faster gameplay and a more badass Hiryu. The Strider series may not have the best graphics, but it sure is fun to play. Check out Hardcore Gaming 101 for a detailed article about the series (if interested).

      The PC Engine version was simply an attempt to get a return on the investment for the assets developed for the canned Super Graphics version. If they had simply thrown all of that out and built a port from the ground up, it would have been far better. @@darkerfalcon3747 Nice one i didnt know they programmed the game and yeah the game is a mess, shame as they seemed to be the ones that did ghouls and ghosts on the super grafx and that fantasic. This is off there website about strider port, A port of a hugely popular arcade game.
      In charge of planning, graphics, programming, and sound.
      The development was done to the very limit of the PC Engine's capabilities, which were extremely complicated, as it was compatible with the PC Engine CD-ROM arcade card. There are also new stages exclusive to this game.
      Come to think of it, we also developed "Makaimura" in this environment...

    Looks like crap compared to the Sega version with the flickering and slowdown. I seen faster games on PCE....

    Core Grafix turn Strider into bunga-man. Real betters taking on the Mega Genesis.

    First time I see the PC Engine version of Strider... Not liking it.
    The Genesis/Mega Drive port was a downgrade from the arcade original. The PC Engine version looks like a downgrade of the downgrade.
    Considering the SFII port turned out much better, NEC probably didn't put much effort into Strider.
