The Skye Boat Song (Extended) Outlander TV Series Soundtrack COVER

The Skye Boat Song is a Scottish traditional, telling the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the leading figure during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. His effords driving the English out of Scotland and defending the Scottish Highland culture proved futile when the Jacobite army was utterly defeated at Culloden. Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to the Isle of Skye in a small boat.
There are two lyric versions for the tune. The one being relevant here is Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1892 poem. The text was adapted to female gender for the TV series Outlander, because the serie’s main character is a woman - Claire, who works as nurse during the second world war. When the war is over, her husband returns and they both travel to Scotland for their second honeymoon. Accidentally, Claire touches the stones at Craigh na Dun, an ancient stone cirlce - and travels back in time: from the year 1945 to 1743. All on her own, her adventurous and exciting journey begins...
We recorded the song over the Christmas holidays. One reason we chose it: We are still feeling the reverberations of our Scotland travel last summer. These amazing landscapes, old mysterious places, raw nature... it's all so inspiring! Last but not least, we got our hands on some new instruments we wanted to use in a song: Bagpipes, Low Whistle and Bodhran (which is actually an Irish drum, but is widely played in Scotland as well). The orchestra is built from Miroslav Philharmonik once again.
