In terms of mainstream music, yeah utopia as an album did 100% carry completely. It's a great and highly creative mainstream album and was undoubtably the biggest moment imo. Sure i thought the squid album was better but squid albums aren't gonna carry the whole year
Utopia absolutely carried mainstream rap in 2023. This year felt so silent and tame compared to other years of rap that Utopia really felt like the only album from a mainstream rap artist that felt compelling and entertaining.

I think what the person was trying to say is that commercially wise Utopia was the most important album of the year I don’t think he meant it was better than every other album
I think popularity is very important to an album If you see and hear a lot of people listen to it you’ll psychologically believe it is a good album. Hence why atrocity exhibition is loved by many hip hop heads but not the general public
When he said carried 2023 I think he was talking about the anticipation and the cultural moment that the release of that was. Whether it was the movie, the briefcases, the album art, the live shows where he teased songs and with it 5 years since astroworld that made it even bigger. And also how Travis would act following the astroworld tragedy. The music itself wasn’t an album of the year contender for me I preferred Scaring the hoes, DYKTATUOB, Lahai and others but it was still a great moment for the culture
I agree with you though I honestly don’t think it was bigger than Astroworld. Maybe better but I feel like Astroworld was hugeeee in the “popular” culture
Utopia is the best mainstream rap album of 2023 for me because it just felt like a whole theatrical experience, but obviously Scaring the Hoes & the billy woods records were more introspective and creative which is why they were also in my top.
I definitely live in a bubble because I have never talked to anyone about Travis Scott beyond how people died at Astroworld. The only discussions I’ve ever seen are on online music spaces. I feel like I’m a little crazy when people talk about how Travis Scott is so universal and huge.
You’ve never heard of sicko mode, goosebumps. These songs were absolutely massive before the tragedy. He had a McDonald’s commercial, and was doing insane numbers. Then the tragedy happened and he stayed silent for a year or so and released utopia mid last year which was a massive moment for the hip hop community and also did numbers elsewhere. Sold around 500k first week which is massive for a rapper
Ehh, the production and energy is cool. But Travis really isn’t that great of a lyricist. Most of his lyrics are very empty and surface level concepts. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an album from him where I go “ohhhh NOW I understand who Travis is.” It’s all just well produced generic music. Done well. But very generic. With his own style of course.
@@ilovedagreendayIdgaf about any of that. I listen to music to be entertained, chill, or have fun. I could care less about who Travis is in his inner soul

It can go the opposite way too fs, that "underground artists wouldn't be underground if the music was good," or "your favorite rapper is selling a fraction of a fraction compared to X, Y, or Z."
Mate you rated scaring the hoes aoty tier. Honestly scaring the hoes was really fun the first few times. Then it's a bit too much. So i get it. But what lyricisms and vocal artistry did you see there? Im not saying utopia is the best ever album. The lyrics could have been better, sure. But so many songs that stand on its own. Bangers. If there was one album this year in hip hip with legit bangers its Utopia. Aoty? Maybe not. Carried 2023 hip hop scene. Yeah most definitely
Yeah, I think that’s exactly it. It might’ve been a cool album in the mainstream world…but when you compare it to the rest of the underground world…it’s really not that great. It’s fine. It’s okay. But it really doesn’t deserve to be the top spot from a musical perspective.
Why does Anthony take any opportunity to say FEIN is overrated? 😂I still love the song
Yeah. That song is overhated as hell.
I'm bumping Fien right now 😎👍🏽🚗🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😂😂

I love Utopia, it’s Travis’s best since Rodeo, and it’s in my honorable mentions for AOTY, but Scaring the Hoes definitely takes the W.
facts on facts
Utopia is nowhere near astro
For me Magic 2, Glorious Game or Course of the Inevitable 3 takes the W for AOTY.
