      Might be better to have the ceiling taken down and replaced as it’s plaster board

    Just moved in a house covered in Artex (got it for a good price at least) Thankfully samples from all rooms came back negative for asbestos so seriously thinking of steaming it off. Can't have it plastered, we ran out of money fofr such things when we had to replace a condemned boiler days after moving in! Thanks for the informative video :)

      Thank you... houses always hidden expense.. if the artex is on plaster then it will be easier to remove... once through the painted surface water will soak into the artex..

      @@PaintingandDecorating Thanks, turns out the they Artexed straight onto the boards (noticed this when I removed an old ceiling mounted fire alarm). I'm guessing I should learn how to skim it, ort wait a year or two until we have money to get it skimmed.

      Should pay for the boiler on monthly payments rather than all at once if you’re tight on cash. Can get decent financing at 0%

    Hi, thanks for the informative video. True grafter... I thought I could put my hand to this but want a proper job dun so gonna leave it to the professionals👍🏼😉 I think someone else asked this question earlier on but I'll ask it again. I have an artex ceiling that I want wallpapered. What is the best way forward?? Scrape off artex (only about 5years old) or skim/plaster ceiling then wallpaper?? 👀👍🏽

    Hi excellent video. I have a bedroom that had a leaking roof which as been fixed now. however parts of the artex as being damaged and is flaking off. house was built in 1950s so most likely has asbestos but will get it test just to make sure.
    I wanted to ask can I plaster of it or put plaster boards over it?
    the rest of the house has artex on the ceiling aswell but they are fine no cracks can they be plastered over aswell?

    Love your videos, I learnt a lot, thanks. One question if you don’t mind, I’ve got artex ceilings every in my house, I just finished scraping my bathroom’s ceiling and I mad huge mess; I used warm soapy water. It came of rather easily after soaking it well, but I am not sure it would be wise to use same method in the bedrooms, hall and living room. If the artex ceilings are very good condition, what would you do? For the best results (long run) would you skim it or scrape it off??

    Cross batten ceiling, plasterboards and skim .Much better than just over skimming the artex has it tends to crack, or in some cases pull the artex of the ceiling .

  • @Korvintage64
    @Korvintage64 6 років тому +1

    To be honest I'd get a plasterer in to overboard the artex & skim. Safer & possibly quicker. Have you ever tried something like X-Tex, etc?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      Have heard of it from some research that I've been doing will possibly try some if asked to strip anymore artex. The problem with this ceiling there was loose artex on in places and it was badly applied also the plasterboard was moving in corners and along joints. So just to skim over was not an option at first.

  • @AdamRenwick1992

    Before anyone attempt this, make sure your artex is asbestos free. Especially on older properties.

      Thanks, the scraper that I used was just right really have used some of these angled scrapers with large handles and they tend to dig in at times and can make more damage. Scraping is never easy especially on ceilings.

    Use X-Tex , Paint it on and leave for 1 hour. Then use a scrapper to take off the Artex it would take about 2 hours max to any ceiling. X-Tex is brillant stuff.

    Can you do one on removing polystyrene tiles? I have 4 rooms to do!!

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      best way first is to start stripping and see how well the adhesive is stuck hopefully if the ceiling was not sealed well it should come off easily. Take it from there.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      then maybe warm water also give it a go with steam stripper. Then if that does not work see if there is a solution on the market to work up the adhesive.

    In my opinion it's probably better to just PVA and skim or overboard the artex ceiling. At least you don't have to mess around scraping stuff that could have asbestos in it.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  4 роки тому

      We discovered the Artex was straight onto the plasterboard. Which was loose so we had to leave it and just secured the plasterboard. then just flatered off the Artex and but some insulation paper over it.

    • @nicam49
      @nicam49 Рік тому

      But don't forget that the Artex will have been painted, so you're not applying a skim coat direct to Artex but to paint! So you must at least remove the paint.

    • @delcousins5172
      @delcousins5172 8 місяців тому

      It doesn't work when you start to plaster after using the PVA the Artex will start to drop off. Believe me I've tried it. X-tex is the best product I've used to get rid of Artex.

  • @marcuschambers62
    @marcuschambers62 6 років тому

    Be careful mate, honestly we work in pretty unfriendly dusty environments and although artex probably actually contains only small amounts in pre 2000 it is still a risk. Better to be safe than sorry.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      Marcus Chambers sorry Yes very small amount of white asbestos but always wear a suitable mask and wet removal mid 1980 they stopped adding asbestos. Should have checked will add a note about safety when we learnt at college there was no mention of this.

      Don't envy what you are doing, messy and hard work.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      Marcus Chambers Yes not easy especially when it's been applied straight to plaster board. So we decided to just smooth ready to line and paper. Will make sure I double check. My uncle died from asbestosis working for the council cutting pipe insulation.

    • @marcuschambers62
      @marcuschambers62 6 років тому

      Painting and Decorating sorry to hear about your uncle, the thing is symptoms don't usually surface for sometimes 25 years after exposure. It's quite alarming how many things used to contain asbestos, you would probably be surprised. The worst thing about it is because it's heat proof, acid and alkaline proof, once it's in your body it won't be broken down.
      I have done a fair amount of training in asbestos and site safety and I would recommend it, quite an eye opener and although you are a sole trader you too have safety requirements.
      Back in the day it was drink some milk to reduce the harmful effects of lead paint fumes!
      Could the ceiling maybe have been overboarded as I noticed there was no coving/cornice to contend with. I know it might have been a bit more work but better than have you and your brother having to strip it?
