Can you help me please?
I dont know where to get tongs for lifting cruciables out of the furnace. I have a couple for pouring different sizes but it is difficult getting cruciable that are full out. I dont have a welder so I can make them...

Just one thought John... what will you be casting? If it's big, the Devil-Forge is fine. But if it's small, like jewellery or model engineering, a tabletop electric may be better. That's what I use these days ua-cam.com/video/aegxF-SKOnY/v-deo.html

Honestly what donyou recommend for someone whos getting started in silver/gold ingots?
I dont plan to do this long term. I might have half kilo of each metal and only want to melt my current holdings. Nothing more.
What do you recommend? I've been viewing electric vs propane. Highest heat requirement will be 1100c / 2000f.
I've seen guys do silver with nothing more than a ladle and a blow torch. This seems a sensible approach for a one-off task. How does that sound?

@@vogman FB2M finally arrived today; only took eight days to travel half way around the globe; would have arrived sooner, but it spent four days in France.
Will have to wait for the rainy weather to clear before I can get started melting outdoors and casting those metals into ingots, aluminum, brass, and copper.
The female FedEx delivery driver said she did a double-take and laughed when she saw the shipping origination address as she is also from Lithuania.

Ordered the 10kg forge today and now have time to clean up and look at the mountain of metal I have.
In time will also get the Elegoo Mars 4 DLP as the thought of the LCD being "a consumable" totally sucks. Not so bad if replacing a 2K one etc... but the 8K ones and up start costing serious money. The 50u XY is also great compared to my Ender 3.
Hoping this is something my wife can get into (making wax models/art) so I can then cast them.

Great review Geoff. If my potentially rubbish burner design doesn’t work out I’ll definitely think about getting an off the shelf one like theirs, it looks awesome. I don’t know how much the foundry cost but it looks great. You made some very fair suggestions too. The lid is my main worry on my homemade one so I’ve gone with a ‘lift and spin’ type. Great vid thanks for the effort, can’t believe that burner!looks like a beast.
Like you I've always gone with home build, but when it comes to the burner, I think the investment is worth it. It seems to use less gas but produces hotter temperatures. I guess it's just a matter of efficiency : )
That particular furnace costs $599 (with free shipping) on their Ebay store. If you get the model without the refractory (and just the wool insulation), it's $390. Then there's a smaller, 4kg model (without refractory) for only $250.

Great suggestions. I think I would add one more though. It seems that the hinge was a little undersized for the weight of the lid. Nice job on the overview! Hope to see more of it!
I can put my hand on my heart and swear to you that I did make that observation in my original draft. but then I considered the difficulty of hinging on a circle. Personally I'd flatten a section of the base and lid to make a larger area for a wider, stronger hinge. But then that would raise the price. So I removed the comment as I think, pound for pound, it's good value as it is : )
I agree it is a great value! I just think it could be upgraded a bit. If it was to give out while using, That could create a bad situation. After all as a hobby and safety....... Safety is no accident!
Well the good news is Devil-Forge thanked me for my suggestions and said, very decently I thought, "We know it's not the best in the world and we are always striving to improve our products..." or words to that effect. In the meantime, as one of the comments below says, I just turn it 90 degrees : )

Nice review mate. I was going to mention the hinge but I see that it has already been raised and answered. I agree with you about the hinge buddy, a flat surface maybe welded onto the outside for a better hinge might be the order of the day. Keep on keeping on fella.

I think companies are sensible enough to wrap well and packaging companies are brilliant by and large. Whenever I hear folks complain about postal costs, I generally say, "I'll give you that amount of money if you'll deliver it." This tends to make them appreciate what's involved a little more : D

It's a great hobby as long as you're VERY careful with safety, as mistakes with molten metal are hard to recover from. If big stuff is your goal, a foundry like this is great. If smaller stuff, like jewellery, is more your thing, consider electric ua-cam.com/video/aegxF-SKOnY/v-deo.html
Hi Geoff! Great review! What do you think about replacing the ceramic wool for the burner with some high temperature rubber sealant? I think that for my first melt I didn't placed that piece of wool so good, so had some air going through there. Do be honest I even didn't follow the instructions for drying the foundry but found no cracks in the cement afterwards.
I'm not sure how well rubber would stand up to the heat if I'm honest... such high temp ceramic wool is fairly cheap and worth using to get the air content just right 😁

My foundry design has worked out great for me, I cannot say they same for my refractory cement mixes I'm on my 3 rd and it's an improvement but will not stand more than 6 or 8 copper meetings. My interest in the melting is art. I have access to lots of scrap wire but in that form scrap is all it's good for, but if you can turn that wire to ingots, now you can hammer it into sheets and suddenly your options are without limit
When i move to a bigger place next year i am getting one too and then there will be a lot more projects :D
I've always made my own Ralph, but honestly, I wish I'd known about Devil-Forge back then. I wouldn't have had such a long learning curve. It really is a nice little foundry and you're right, there's so much you can do with them : )
Hey great video! Can this be used for glass work? I see it has a max temp of 1600 deg C. Looking online, the exact melting point of glass seems to be anywhere form 1500C to 1800C depending on the glass... I'm new to this, but the furnace I used at a local glass studio had a readout of 1500 deg C on the controller, however I'm not sure how accurate this was.

Well Sam, I can say you won't be disappointed. Are there better out there? Maybe, I really don't know. But I can tell you it beats anything I've used before, it seems pretty good value to me and the burners are amazing. If you get one, you'll be a happy chappy : )

I am interested in purchasing this item...I really love this review, you answered many of my question. But just was wondering does it come with the inside pot thing for melting the metals? If not can you suggest where or what brands.. you had mentioned in your review someone could use a bigger size pot.
No, there's no crucible provided. You need to get these yourself. eBay is usually a good place : )
They appear to have listened to your suggestion for burner location but they still have the same lid handle.

Thanks for the video! How long does the foundry usually go on a propane tank (in hours or number of crucibles filled with aluminum or steel)?
Hi Rick. It's a good question but one that can't easily be answered. How big are the gas canisters? What temperature? What metal? How clean was the metal? What's the outdoor temperature? There's so many variables and I really don't have an answer.
I can say that the gas burner from Devil-Forge is quicker than the home made burner I was previously using and it certainly seems to use less gas. This is probably aided by the foundry being more efficiently insulated.
As for crucibles, that's anyone's guess. I have crucibles that have lasted months and some that have cracked on first use... and yet I treat them all the same.

@@vogman Don't use ordinary propane or LPG tanks, fill your gas tank at the service station, the gas they use in cars burns harder and hotter. how simple make an adaptor get the filler valve from an old car at the wreckers and adapt a pole connector to it, you dont even have to bleed it as the pump forces it in and stops automatically.
@@vogman you can not use 9kg bbq gas bottles the freeze up and you don.t get the gas supply you need , minimum size gas bottle to work well is an 18kg bottle because it has a greater surface area to convert the liquid gas to gas vapour.
I think what devil forge is doing is fantastic. Gifting with your name on it??? You know your work is being appreciated. You, big stack, and oil burner are my favorites. Not only do you have the casting I like but the narrative that goes along with it has me cracking up. Really do wish if you had the way, to contact oil burner and let him know how much he's missed. Know he's still watching cause I've seen where he has commented. By the way, did you post a vid on building your furnace that raises on the wooden rails?
I know what you mean Donnie. Every time I do something daft, I think about Oil Burner's commentary on Health & Safety. It cracks me up every time.

I have one of these (purchased it straight away because of this video) and to anyone else with one of these, has anyone else got some cracks formed at the lid vent? I properly burned the residual moisture out as per the instructions when I got it, and ive used it about 8 times, only melting aluminium, and already I've got a 3mm crack in the cement around the lid's vent openening. It burns fine still but i worry about this crack worsening. I have a belief it's because of the shock from inside the forge once the propane ignites and fed air (the moment it goes "woof").
Hi Brian. Don't be too worried about cracks. I don't think there's a furnace out there without them. Mine cracked on first use but is still going strong.
You're right about the shock on the insides. Everything wants to expand when exposed to heat and look at the incredible heat these things are subjected to. Mine glows red! So from cool to red hot in just a few minutes... that's a massive temperature variation that the majority of materials couldn't take. Even refractory has troubles. Fire bricks crack and break up. Electric kiln linings wear away.
As long as it holds together and does its job, I wouldn't worry. If pieces fall off or it cannot retain the heat, that's a different matter - contact Devil Forge right away and light me know if you have any issues. They're a good bunch and keen to help, so I'd be surprised, but the offer stands.
And do check out my videos shortly after this one. Look closely and you will see cracks in mine.

I know this was 4 years ago but wouldn't turning the furnace 90 degrees to your right and treating the side as the front take care of both of your suggestions?

Hi William. They were very receptive to my comments and thanked me for them. They said that they are always striving to make improvements. Who knows, maybe we'll see these improvements in a later model. But in the meantime, for the money, it's hard to beat these little forges.

Very interesting. I'm thinking of getting one. I have cast iron before using waste oil but it's very dirty process so I was thinking of this to do bronze castings. Please could you tell me how much gas it used to do the bronze melt?

Is LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) the same as propane? Can LPG be used with a Devil Forge Foundry?

Thanks mate. In truth, I never much bother with ingots (BigstackD would faint at that suggestion). I picked up the "mini-muffin baking tray" tip from King Of Random and it's great for small crucibles, but I left small crucibles behind a long time ago. I only use these trays to dump out any leftovers when I pour and they're okay for that, but I did think how grubby they looked in this demo.

Casting's not really my thing but I am looking to get into forging (knife making). Would you have any hesitation giving one of their single burner forges a go? Do you have any experience of them?
I've not heard anything negative about Devil Forge. Sure, I've heard of a few problems, but there's problems at times with all suppliers. The important thing is that these problems were all resolved - that speaks highly of them to me : )
Hi VegOilGuy...I noticed in your review you talk about a side handle to lift the lid. If you remember the old Morgan type crucible furnaces, they had a slide along lid which puts the lid safely out of your way. Obviously they would need to incorporate a bracket to slide it on to though. I see what you mean about the burner position too. How come most of the Devil forge furnaces have that light wool lining but the one you tested has a more solid one? Is that an updated type? Cheers mate.

Why are most just wool? Cost is the simple answer... they're cheaper this way. And if you're prepared to invest in QUALITY respirator equipment, that's fine, but ceramic wool does give off hazardous fibres that are very harmful (Devil Forge are very honest about this and make the same recommendation in their literature). The model I have also has ceramic wool as an insulator but this is coated with refractory cement, trapping the particles and preventing this hazard. Unfortunately this added extra increases the weight dramatically and also the cost. But personally I feel you can't put too high a price on health : )

+VegOilGuy ...that makes sense as if I ever got one that would of worried me. I was a Moulder many moons ago and have just been eying up the equipment available if I was to start a little hobby foundry.
As a hobby you'll find it very rewarding, and being a moulder you'll already have a major advantage on most folks. Good mould design is critical to successful casting : )

How many times can you fire up the furnace of one propane bottle. Does it come with the crucible or do you have to buy your own separately. And have you made any exotic metal mixes like 90/10
Hi Thomas. It's impossible to say with the gas as there are so many factors (size of the bottle, type of metal, quantity being melted, etc). It doesn't come with a crucible - you need your own. As for metals, nothing exotic really... I worked with aluminium, brass, copper and aluminium-bronze (90% copper, 10% aluminium)

What size crucible do you normally use ?
If you use wire to attach a metal bar to the lid handle you can stand at the side of the foundry and open the lid without burning your arm.

@@vogman Do you weld? A pair of U-bolts might do the job too. That handle looks substantial enough to drill a pair of holes into so you could just bolt on an extension to either ( or both ) side(s). I'll be watching to see what you come up with.
You're right Ron. Those handles are tough enough to take even my terrible welding : )
Have you used it emough to get graphite crucible burn-through?
I've used it dozens of times, but I'm always careful with the crucibles. Once they thin or show signs of cracking, don't take the risk. It's not worth it 😁
Also I’ve followed the instructions but there is still some moisture evaporating how many times did you use yours until it is completely dried?
Don't be in a rush... go nice and slow... it takes as long as it takes : )

Dan that is THE place to start mate. Most of us begin there. You'll soon find out whether the hobby grabs you or not.
Just don't expect too much from it. Plaster foundries usually fall apart after 1 or 2 uses. But it wets your apetitie.
King of Random suggested suspending wire wool in the wet plaster and said that can increase the life tenfold. I've never tried it, but it's cheap enough and worth a go : )
If you're in the UK (I'm guess from timeline here) don't go with Plaster of Paris as that's expensive in large quantities. But a bag of Bonding (used by plasterers) is cheap and large. Works very well but takes longer to dry - which can be a good thing.
@@vogman yes mate from the UK and happen to have a big bag of Paris knocking about I'm abit obsessed with Viking and bronze age stuff and read lot regards of bronze casting which I find amazing but wish I could get the idea of lost wax casting as IV told my Mrs I'd cast her a ring one day lol

I love bronze age as well and resisted as hard as I could using a vacuum because they're expensive and were NOT used in the bronze age. But those clever sods managed would I couldn't, so I found my cheap pump and chamber alternative that works great.
Talking of jewellery, you will know exactly what I mean when I say I'm planning on making a Thor's Hammer pendant soon.
I just got my devil forge FB2M and the curing process is what worries me. I know low heat, don't exceed 0.05MPA, what is ur recommended pressure for the furnace?
Hi Robert. In honesty, keeping it simple, go as low as you can go. Don't worry about gas - worry about your new purchase.
Set the pressure gauge right down and heat for 15 minutes or so - you should see evaporation taking place. Then let it cool and repeat. Take several bashes at this until you're confident the moisture has gone.
I did develop cracks and I followed the guidelines exactly, BUT those cracks have not worsened, so take comfort in that. However, given the opportunity to do things again, I would go sloooooooooooowwwwww. It's not a race : )

Does anyone know exactly how hot these are able to get? I’ve been trying to cast aluminum bronze knives and other similar things with my own diy foundry, and even though it melts fine, it doesn’t quite get up to proper temp for thin sections (~2200F), and I was hoping I’d be able to buy a better foundry
You'll certainly have no problem with Aluminium Bronze in a DF, but make sure you're burner isn't the issue first, or maybe even consider better insulating your foundry. And, of course, there's the matter of your sprues : )
@@vogman Use a bigger gas bottle to get more gas volume coming into the forge, Use car gas, fill your bottles at the service station like I do the car gas burns harder and HOTTER trust me. how do you fill your bottle at the petrol station well first make an adaptor from the car filler valve to your bottle valve then to fill it up well up to you how you do it , clue - late at night when the servo is not busy.

Go electric, and forget all the mess and noise from burning fossile fuels and oils.
Hope you get more donations for a new crucible. Do you plan on going up in temp ? If you do, how about trying cast iron, the only reason I haven't bought one yet, I need a foundry that can do cast iron

Yes apparently this foundry can handle cast iron and I will be testing that claim in a few weeks, as soon as I can scrape together enough to two new crucibles. One will be completely sacrificial... my GUESS is that the process will eat the budget end crucible, making it a one shot deal. To handle those sort of temperatures regularly, which I don't need to but you may, look to the crucibles than are around 10 times the cost. There's a reason they're so expensive : O

An automotive jack stand is a less flammable alternative to the wooden shed for leaning the lid over. I'm a little worried about your lungs with that ceramic wool exposed at the burner. Also, just turn the furnace 90 degrees anticlockwise.
No ceramic wool problems with this foundry thanks to the refractory cement. BigstackD has the ceramic-wool-only model and Devil-Forge DO recommend with that one that you wear proper respiratory gear. But then again good safety wear is always sensible.
Yes the lid tilts over about 180, whereas I would prefer may 100 degrees, but that just person choice, which is why I leaned it against my shed.
Interestingly, despite topping 1000C, you'll notice no scorch marks on my shed at all. Impressive I thought.
Just getting started into melting... I’m a welder in the states... is it possible for me to make my own molds? They won’t be cast... but I have access to lots of steel stock....

Hi David. It does seem a flimsy hinge I admit. Because it's circular, there's not much room to fit a straight edge, which a hinge needs to be. But even though it wobbles a bit, mine is still as good as day one. I hope this helps : )

Brilliant news, but mate, I don't think you've asked one question that I can answer. It all "depends". How much heat are you applying, how much copper is there, how big is your gas bottle / crucible. Too many variables mate...
But I tell you this, you'll have great fun discovering the answers yourself : D

I think you got the cracking because it was set to high. Yes, the instructions say 0.5 atm, but it also offers the conversion to megapascals (0.05 MPa). Your regulator appears to measure MPa so it was 10x the recommended setting.

@@vogman I got my FB2M today, and i was taking a look of this video again to see how to get rid of moisture properly. I noticed that they have changed the conversion to said 0.05MPa now in the manual, unlike in this video it is different. So yes it is definitely way too high in this video.

True mate, but what I mean is that I'm NOT being paid to say nice things. I made it perfectly clear the Devil_forge that I wouldn't lie and if I didn't like it, I would say so. They took that gamble... and it paid off for them. It's good. Could it be better? Yes, but then it could also be more expensive. So all things being equal, it's good for the money in my eyes : )

Is it normal for the refractory cement to crack a little?
Yes, a little cracking is common. It's happened to mine. The heat fluctuations experienced in these furnaces is incredible so you can forgive a little expansion. As long as it remains structurally sounds, fine cracks shouldn't be a problem for you.

Hi. Yes this furnace can cope with Iron and Devil-Forge make a burner specifically for high temperatures like that. As for buy or build, that's down to you. Personally I'm the kind of guy that likes to make things. Some are, some aren't. I will say it would probably cost me nearly as much to build one of these as buy it as the quality seems pretty good to me, but you may have access to materials I don't etc. However, for best results, I would recommend getting a burner : )

Hi Emilio. I'm only guessing, but it's probably a local thing. Devil-Forge are in Lithuania and probably set up originally selling to their fellow countrymen - hence the ID business. But as they've grown they've developed an international market and like many, they use eBay to deal with issues like currency and card payments. If you were buying my friend, use eBay. I believe there's a like on their homepage. From there everything will probably be familiar to you : )
Does it include the liquid holder and the thongs?
Hi Adrian. Unfortunately no. You'll need to buy your own crucible (cheaply enough on eBay) and tongs are something you can either make yourself or buy from a suitable store.

Try to melt steel or cast-iron in it. I have already seen someone doing it, but i still can’t understand the fact that this propane burner is able to reach such a high temperature.

Hi again Nick. I've just heard back from Devil-Forge. Both answers are correct.
1450C is the max temperature achievable on the "package" displayed (foundry + burner). But with the forced air burner instead, the foundry can be raised to 1600C. So the foundry CAN handle 1600C : )

There's nothing wrong with Devil Forge. But it does depend on the type of casting you want to do. If it's big items and you like working outdoors, then this is the way to go. It´s nice to have a dream...I´ve just got a new one. I´ve been daydreaming about building a burner for some time. When I tried a friend´s burner in my charcoal furnace it just popped and banged like a UA-cam pulse jet so I´ve been daydreaming about building one myself, till I saw this video. Now I want a Devil Forge FB2M and a Devil Forge burner.
Just one thing - I´m a tad disappointed to see this illustrious channel referring to a furnace as a foundry. Just as my teeth grate when I hear Richard Hammond talking about some powerplant having been "forged in the crucible of motorsport", I shudder whenever this misnomer is repeated. My internet research suggests that a great deal of the responsibility for this outrage rests with none other than HRH The King of Random himself, with his (otherwise) superb "Mini Metal Foundry" video. The furnace melts the metal - the foundry is the workspace in which the furnace is sited, but I suspect that I´m on a losing wicket here, given how many people say "My grandad had a Robin Reliant" - how did that one come about? No-one says "My grandad flew a Spitfire Supermarine"...(fade out to incomprehensible discontented muttering)

I think you're right about KoR, but he's shaped so many of us, myself included, with this terminology. And if that's what people want the hear, then I'll repeat it, else suffer no views at all (again). Plus we speak English, that ever-evolving language that constantly reshapes itself in an never ending impetuous attempt to confuse other languages.
As for Devil-Forge (I know, 'Forge' ), they make and mean little furnace / foundry / metal-melting-bundle-of-joy. And if you don't want to spring for everything, if you wanted to hold back a penny or too for a celebratory glass or ten of something afterwards, I would strongly encourage you to look favourably upon their burners (torch?). I made my own previously and I thought it worked... but now I compare it with the Devil-Forge burner, I realise mine was a limp, pale and weak imitation.
I must take this opportunity to say that I have missed my Del-ism's. It's been a few wax melts now. Good to have your input again

Have you seen my home made foundry videos? A man of your obvious talents would have no trouble putting something even better together. Ceramic wool is fairly cheap in small quantities and does work very well, but please cover it with something to avoid those nasty particles.
But the burner... oh yes... you'll thank me for the burner.
@@vogman It´s when I´ve been watching your build videos that the daydream bubbles back to the surface, usually when I´m at work, or out doing the weekly shop, or watching Netflix with my wife, or gazing fondly at the little pile of ally cupcake ingots stacked discreetly beneath the wardrobe.
As you've seen, I have to be careful me my daydreams... they're capable of combining Angelina Jolie and casting. Such daydreams need watching carefully... ideally from behind the safety of a restraining order ; )

Hi John. THAT is the real question. I've built a few myself and I'm still not overly confident in my answer.
IF you had all the necessary skills and equipment (particularly welding I think) and if you had access to a free and robust metal container (to make the comparison fair), then it would just be a matter of good ceramic insulation, good refractory and time. So yes, in those circumstances you could certainly do it cheaper.
If you didn't have a good container and had to buy one, plus insulation and refractory, you could still do it I would think.
I'm the sort of guy who prefers to home build rather than buy, but I frequently find these builds cost me more than I would expect and often cost more buying one. As the old DIYer joke goes, why buy one for £20 when you you can build your own for just £100?
However, I'm generally satisfied that my home builds include superior materials, are built specifically to my needs and, for the most part, are better than the off-the-shelf choice.
In this case I'm not so sure I could match everything... it's a nice little foundry : )

If you're careful mate, you'll do fine. Just don't take risks and if you want a gas burner, buy one. You'll thank me in the end - especially if you get the Devil-Forge burner - it's a powerful little beast : )
@@vogman I actually started a build after your video. I do agree buy a burner(s). I have a back ground in metal working, machine shop, precision forged parts, and heat treat. But I learn so much watching you guys who have taken the next step. I have many hats. But your ideas rock.
In that case John, I bow to your expertise. I am but a humble Tryer. I have a go because I enjoy it and admire the skills of those that do it well.
By the sound of things, you have more than enough expertise and could no doubt build your own burner from scratch (I tried and failed... too much precision needed for my hamfisted attempts).
I also admire you for looking around. I NEVER assume I have all the answers. We all benefit from the examples set by others.
