How An Underdog Stood Up To A Muay Thai God

- ONE Championship has been on fire lately with the top talent putting on insane fights. And one of their biggest stars is Tawanchai, who many subscribers may recognize from my video on him where I covered his bone breaking kicks. But Tawanchai’s next opponent is one who he has a history with, a fighter who gave him more than he ever bargained for.
By all accounts Smokin Jo Nattawut was an underdog going into his fight with Tawanchai. Although he had held belts in various organizations he had nowhere near the accumens of Tawanchai and had just suffered two losses, one via knockout to the merciless switch hitter Chinzig Allazov. But through good strategy and in part due to the natural clash of their styles, Jo put on a great performance. So much so that they are now destined to fight again.
But from the opening bell Nattawut gave as good as he got. And the fight is not just wildly entertaining, it provides an interesting lesson on exactly how to stand up to Tawanchai and other ultra dominant power strikers.

So the second fight was even better but even more controversial and there's probably going to be a rematch! Who wants to see the second one broken down too?
It was so good!
Please break it down!
Could you do a Chingis allozov breakdown if you didn’t already he like the perfect kickboxer best striker in the word imo
pleaseee do a breakdown on their most recent fight!
Hell yeah! Looking up info about it you certainly got an entertaining fight!

This isn't just a breakdown on the encounter of these two fantastic fighters. it's a gameplan on how to deal and potentially beat POWER strikers. The tip you gave on staying put when they strike and countering right away with volume + ending the exchange is what vakitoh did to alex pereira. And the bit where you mentioned being too defensive can be dangerous is also soooo spot on. Think UFC Pereira VS Adesanya 1 and 2. In the first match izzy was too defensive and gave him too much space. Second fight, he was less willing to coincide space, extended exchanges plus crowded him and then finally delivered the KO blow using the same adjustments. Great Study material this is kind sir!
You can't coincide space. I think you meant concede space.
Just like volk vs topuria as well. Although topuria does well/better in extended exchanges, a better strategy for volk wouldve been to meet that aggression and clinch instead of fading/pulling back which goes against his usual style and natural stature/frame.
I have been a long time boxing and mma fan but your muay thai breakdowns are what got me hooked on this sport, so thank you! Keep up the great work.
Love tawanchai but I’m rooting for joe in this rematch.
what a crazy fight, who would have expected that to happen? ! Joe is truly not bad!
you need to update this video with the 2nd fight that really cemented Jo dismantling Tawanchai. never have I seen Tawanchai miss so many shots and be afraid to hit
Talent against talent is always amazing to watch
Jo Nattawut must've been dogsitting for Joe Frazier, cus this man does not move back or go down.
he was always in danger zone yet he mostly goes out as the winner,he's literally joe frazier reincarnated as a muay thai mythical fighter
I love how Jo Nattawut has an auto-counter strike such as the leg kicks. I've been rooting for Jo then and will root for him until the end🤟
But Tawanchai was supposed to fight Superbon, who pulled out of the fight. He accepted Nattawut in short notice, a style that has nothing to do with what he prepared in his camp in a sport that is basically not his profession (Kickboxing)... so above all RESPECT to Tawanchai for adapting to a very dangerous opponent in a short space of time.
Im excited to see them fight with muay thai rules now!!! Tawanchai has been really excited bc its his sport lol
More respect to Jo for taking a fight at a week's notice
Jo also had to accept the fight on short notice, he had almost no information he was going to fight within that week. Tawanchai was already in camp for months preparing and cutting weight, regardless of who his opponent was.
@@84jordiethere was joke in Thailand that he only practiced for a few days but he almost won so imagined what he can do in 3 months😅😅. The match was so damn close the 2nd time as well
It goes the same for the other guy, stop the d riding.
Insightful breakdown - great stuff!! Super pumped for the next installment now!
w unexpected late night vid drop
You should do a video about Chingiz switch hitting!! And his fast lead high kick!! Also amazing video btw.
This video makes Luke Lessei look awesome for his recent performance against Smokin' Joe!
What's your opinion on Rodtang vs Puric. I just saw a video by Gabriel Varga who sparred with Puric and he seems to think that Purric can knockout Rodtang. Seems unreal to me, but what do you think?
Rodtang has an iron chin. Like any fighter, it's iron until it isn't. When it cracks it's usually gone for good. Varga is super smart and not the kind of guy to say that for click bait. So if he thinks he has a chance then he likely does. I personally don't think Rodtang's chin is anywhere near cracking and he doesn't take as many big shots as people think. But I'm looking forward to the fight even more now!
@@TheModernMartialArtist do i have to set aside money for jaw surgery if I want to get into this sport
Wow this is a great analysis thanks. We saw really similar stuff in the second fight
Do a part 2 on this! The rematch between the two. Would love to hear your analysis
I loved this fight, it was super close so I won't make any claims over scoring or who I think should have actually won, but I do think smokin Joe was the one who impressed me more with their skills
"Sometimes being too cautious will also brings you a lot of trouble." true because you cannot think how to win because you are in the state of anxiety and survival mode, you cannot win if you are too cautious...
This second fight was such a good fight too. Huge respect to Smokin Jo!
I believe the upcoming fight is in muay thai while this fight was in kickboxing. Additionally it was only tawanchai's 2nd kickboxing fight and he was preparing for superbon up to that point who isnt as fast paced as jo, which perhaps that threw tawanchai off alittle bit as well.
With the elbows and the pacing of a longer fight its going to be great to watch the rematch, i think tawanchai has the advantage there. Valuable breakdown nonetheless, in learning how you can off balance and disrupt the rythm of a one shot power puncher/kicker with rapid fire counters! 🙏
I agree, Tawanchai has the advantage. Big fan of the guy. But I'm rooting for Nattawut.
But the muay thai fight saw Tawanchai being exposed more 😂 kickboxinh or muay thai, Jo is Tawanchai's nightmare
His first bout with Tawanchai was Nattawut I expected.
Your Channel Always on the top, thank you for the content 👍
Coach Belton(smokin jos) corner has such a great mind for combat sports. Also a very seeet guy!
The rematch was insane but i thought jo had won the fight, he seemed more in control and looked like he land more efficient shots in the last 3 rounds. I mainly watch boxing though so im curious on your thoughts.
I would have given it to Jo personally. I love Tawanchai though, was hard watching because I didn't know who to cheer for lol
@@TheModernMartialArtist i was hoping tawanchai would win the fight but i had thought he lost and i think jo was robbed but it was an amazing battle between both fighters and i hope we get a third fight
one should sponsore more of this kind of content
Ppl say its a robbery, honestly idk how to score muay thai matches. I just hope Tawanchai won the 2nd one.
Speaking of underdog, can you narrate and analyse the match between Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson please.
This was under kickboxing rules.
How do they score though? Because just from watching, we could clearly see Joe was winning for a longer span than the Champion
@@hish33p32 the damage dealt and number of strikes connected are the main criteria for judging in kickboxing. I wasn’t really sure if Tawanchai should’ve won either.
@@hish33p32Traditional muay thai scoring and One Muay Thai scoring differs significantly, traditional Muay Thai likes clean strikes that have significant impact and composure vs ONE favors aggression, ofc there’s more to it but traditional Muay Thai u usually if you’re winning try to coast on the last round so you don’t give opponent points (defending ur lead) while in ONE if you coast on last round you will lose the round etc
@@ivynbean wdym by coast? Sorry I'm only starting to learn about these sports

great breakdown, I learned a lot of new details from this video
Been watching Joe Nattawut since Lion Fight days and Tawanchai since he was 16, I think Tawanchai is significantly more talented but Joe ain’t a pushover, interesting if it’s a 5 rounder
jo is a late bloomer, he quit muay thai for several years and came back but better and stronger
Great vid, looking forward to the fights tm :)
Awesome analyses as usual. Keep up the great work.
*an exchange of punches
Ref: Karate Chop!
That Nattawut guy has crazy speed on his strikes especially those wide hooks. They don't look like they are as short and crisp as a pro boxer, like Tyson or Morrison. But, it looks like they have so much speed and sting to them, that it makes up for it.
Smokin Jo vs Tawanchai 3 confirmed. Hope Jo actually wins this one.
Got some interesting cards coming up! This rematch should be great no matter what
Great commentary and breakdown.
Good commentary.
would we get a video on Pernell Whitaker again?

What a beautiful spirited fight that one was, they should adapt this kind of strategy and energy into anime because it's sure as hell inspiring
Thank you for this breakdown! I absolutely loved this fight, but the breakdown just has me speechless. Especially 5:45. WOW
Sorry for off-topic, but this fierce match reminded me a thing that I wanted to ask long ago - why don't you make a video about Gatti? Especially his bout with Ward. Maybe he wasn't that technical, but sure left a legacy in his own way.
I will make that eventually! There's only so much time in the day and the list of fights I want to break down is several pages long now haha
Mu uncle Bob on my father's side and my uncle Bill on my mom's side also fought recently at my grandpa's 80th birthday party. Why don't you do a breakdown of that fight?
@@TheModernMartialArtist looking forward to it!
Love smokin joe.. great fighter.. to think he was going to give it all up at one stage. 🔥
Nattawut has a nice pull counter that got Tawanchi good
Here after Jo debatably beat Tawanchai again
I mean..yeah haha. I'm a little bummed, love both fighters but feel like Jo did even better this time under Muay Thai rules too.
At this point, I have no idea how to judge a close Muay Thai Match cos I had Tawanchai 1, 2, and 5. Round 4 could be either.
@@TheModernMartialArtist that’s what I’m saying!! Everybody was saying Tawanchai would destroy Jo under Thai rules but Jo did even better here than the first fight!! And Jo won the first fight too!!! 😂
@@randomblur9110 I think majority votes would say Jo won 3,4,5 & 1,2 went to Tawanchai. Very good fight I just think Jo had more output & did more overall damage
Looking forward to this fight
great vid. dude in the blue wrist wraps looks scary as fuck
That side step was similar to debordement. People should really add footwork to the defense in kickboxing/striking
I love Tawanchai, he always puts on a masterclass. But just like Rodtang, I feel like his reputation causes some of his opponents to freeze up or not fight intelligently once they get rocked once or twice by him.
Tawanchai needs to *LOSE*, and I mean that with love. He’s gonna hit a wall if he doesn’t take an honorable L from a similarly skilled fighter. I hope Smokin’ Joe is the one to turn the lights off. He deserves it
i hope rodtang learns too from his fight with superlek,he needs to improve his clinch work and technique,he also kind of need to improve his defense and slips tbh,if he's floored by puric just like what varga says it's joever.
auras are real LMAO
Came back to say Jo won that fight and should be wearing that belt
I also think Tawanchai needs to lose so he can make spectacular adjustments and we can see the next level version of himself. Him being handed a hard win every time doesn't let him get that reset that he needs. He vowed to KO Jo under MT rules thinking his questionanle first win was because it was under kickboxing rules but was even hit harder at MT. If he now thinks he won the second fight he's going to hit a wall
Smokin Joe is a legend
It’s not like it was a shock the fight was close
Tawanchai has a habit of running his nose with his left glove after every exchange he makes. Sometimes it looks like he blinds himself for a split second.
Have to remember tawanchai really isn’t a kick-boxer. He’s just fighting in the rules cause he’s so talented. He got koed in Japan in kickboxing rules when he first started. Joe is very experienced and lasted 3 rounds vs petrosyan. Very competitive vs him prior to superbon beating him. Tawanchai will adapt more by next fight
NOT. tawanchai got dismantled more in muay thai
the only problem is not allowing classic muay thai technique like clinch more, as it look more like a hitting contest than muay thai, it would have made the fight shorter and more explosive.
the second fight was just as good and just as close.
Will there be any videos on kickboxers from Rise ? Especially considering they’ve been cross-promoting with Glory recently (plus Haraguchi fighting Petch for the featherweight title).

Considering Allazov KOd Jo in like 2 minutes, how do you see a fight with Tawanchai going?
i respect your video but calling him a God is a little bit of a overstaiment, Like you are placing him in them same place as Saenchai, Bakaw and some legends from the Golden era and 2000s he is still young tho and he can become one in this era. I know it was for click bait but i just wanted to express, loved the analysis tho. Blessings
You must analyze the rematch too 😋
You should do one on denis puric
Will the modern martial artist start releasing more grapplers, wrestlers, judoka players videos???????
Gotta create openings to use all that power. Smart.

Nattawat was robbed in the fight, it was obvious he won against Tawanchaii.
He just got robbed again 🥲
This fight was a chest match
Is it just me? That referee was really annoying. He’s in the way too many times.
It’s not difficult to be as strong as tawanchai. Just be a tendon dominant athlete and not muscle driven.
Tawanchai is just pure Muay thai guy. He doesnt really know how to box like allazov
