- Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme starred in the 1968 Broadway musical “Golden Rainbow,” which featured this now-familiar ballad. Steve’s differently-arranged version which is commonly found elsewhere on UA-cam was a track recorded for the “Golden Rainbow” original cast LP, released in March 1968. The earlier single spent 12 weeks on Billboard’s ‘Easy Listening’ (aka ‘Adult-Contemporary’) chart, peaking at #6, though it was the Sammy Davis Jr. recording that would become a widespread hit one year later: • 1969 HITS ARCHIVE: I’v...
The original 45rpm single was issued on Calendar 1001 - I’ve Gotta Be Me (Walter Marks) by Steve Lawrence, orchestra conducted by Pat Williams, released November 1967

Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am
I want to live, not merely survive
And I won't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am
That far away prize, a world of success
Is waiting for me if I heed the call
I won't settle down, won't settle for less
As long as there's a chance that I can have it all
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I've gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
I've gotta be me
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I just gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
I gotta be me
Steve has a Magnificent Voice.
Sammy Davis Jr. did a great version of this song. I only knew of his version. Never knew Steve was the first to record this wonderful song.
This girl is getting home safe tonight

love Brother brent!
Fantastic! What a beautiful voice.
Yes this IS classic Steve Lawrence!
I came from "nobody" movie
The first single of Calendar Records. This and the next four singles were all either by him, Eydie Gorme, or both of them ("Steve & Eydie"). Then came The Archies, and Mr. Lawrence and Ms. Gorme were transferred to the main RCA Victor label.
Their recordings of "Real True Lovin'" and "Chapter One" on RCA were such a joy to hear, and I wish they could be found on CD. I wish Steve's recordings of "I'm Falling Down" and "Runaround" on Calendar would have been available in stereo.
Please God, open that door.
Who's still here in 2020 I'm 15 btw

Much more dramatic.
I believe it is from the Broadway musical Golden Rainbow.
Fabulous song sung to perfection. Steve is better at this song than the late great Sammy Davis Jr.!!!!!
I agree. Just listened to both versions. Steve is better.
They both did a great job with it.
You are out of your mind ...it's not even close Sammys passion and range outshines Steves great voice (which I like ) all day . Sorry !
Love ❤️🐈⬛🖤😘💝 Sammy Davis Jr to death 💀 but I do think Steve Lawrence did a better job on this song
Okay everyone, a question. If this is the first recorded version, Steve sings the lyric “I’ve gotta be free, I’ve gotta be free” twice. That’s how he did it on the Hollywood Palace before Golden Rainbow began previews, too. But in the show itself, and on the cast album, the lyric never deviates from, “I’ve gotta be me, I’ve gotta be me”. There is no “I’ve gotta be free…” Is that a plot decision, indicating that at that point in the show (end of the first act), Larry (Steve’s character) is not ready to say he’s willing to give his son to a relative to reach his goal? Even though he’s “gotta be me”? Any ideas on this deviation in the lyrics? (For reference, Sammy Davis, Jr.’s later recording also uses “free. “)
NOT even Steve Lawrence's best recording of this song.
By FAR his best in my opinion.
Well, to be fair, if the title has any legitimacy, this is his first (or at least one of) official recording of the song. Personally, I prefer the version that was used when Lawrence sang this for the musical: Golden Rainbow. This track was also used in the new 2021 film, “Nobody”. Here is a link if anyone is interested.

Quien vino hasta acá por Nobody??
Sammy Davis Jr. sang this song also. Even though I like Steve Lawrence, I like Sanny's recording of this song better.
Yes, Sammy's popular version is mentioned and linked in this video's written description.
