      They’re monthly rent is cheap but not when you factor in the MASSIVE deposits they usually have to put down first. 😩

  • @Ykoz2016
    @Ykoz2016 Рік тому +149

    It’s the deposits. It’s different. America usually only pays one month rent for deposit. So if rent is $3,000 a month the deposit is $3,000, if the rent is $650 then the deposit is $650 etc. (but yes New York and San Fran are the most expensive in USA)
    The original idea was protection in case a person skips out on their lease, so the owner had one extra month rent covered while they look for a new tenet. Thats why it might be called “first and last”. That’s why those American videos only ask about the rent and not the deposit, because it’s assumed. (The last Seoul apartment with the 2,500 rent and 3,500 deposit was the most similar I’ve seen)
    From what I’ve seen in Seoul the bigger the deposit the smaller the monthly rent. Those $400 or $500 a month apartments usually have huge deposits (but you do get that back so it’s a better deal over all). I think the concept for that arrangement is interest. That the landlord will make interest off that deposit while they have it in the bank.
    And of course both kinds of deposits can be used for damages.

    • @Ykoz2016
      @Ykoz2016 Рік тому

      @@AquaticOni Yes, me too. But…..every time I’ve paid “first and last” the “first” wasn’t a deposit but the actual payment for the first month. Only the “last” was a deposit I got back. Same for everyone I know.
      Like, (for example) if I move in January 1st and my rent is $1000 a month, I give them $2000 on January 1st. And then $1000 a month starting February 1st. And they hold on to the extra $1000 until I move out. Then I get that back. If that makes sense. Lol
      Are you saying if your rent is $1000 a month you give them $3000 to move in? And they hold on to $2000? 😯 Wow! Can I ask what city? I’m super curious now (also that sucks I’m so sorry)

    The girl that said she pays $2000 a month actually has a roommate or 2. So each person pays $2000. I saw that on the UA-cam shorts video. Depending where u live in nyc u can pay up to $7500 per month for a 2/3 bedroom apt. If you're lucky u can get a place for $1500-$2000 for a studio sometimes even a 1 bedroom. Something I can't even afford.

    My apartment in Seoul was $3k a month. I’m not sure how much the deposit was because my company paid it, but they said it was a lot. I think my apartment was about 800sqft. It had 1 bedroom, a living room, bathroom, and kitchen. My washing machine and dryer were on my balcony (semi-outside). The walls were so thin that you can hear people having conversations.

      Usually if rent is that high, they skimped out on the deposit. A really big deposit will guarantee much cheaper rent. I remember one of my friends put down like $8,000 for the deposit and they payed only a few hundred in rent.

    here in seattle a studio apt is going to be anywhere from 900-1700 and a 1bdrm is going to be abt 1400-2500; a 2 bedroom is going to always be over 2k, usually closer to at least 3k. These min cost ones are few and far between & usually on the higher end. Big cities in america are insanely expensive. Also when u factor in health insurance, transportation, and grocery costs it gets so expensive so quickly.

    In Arizona, a western state in the US, rent has gotten pretty expensive. Everything is north of $1,000 dollars here. Also something to note, nothing is nice around this price. A place like that New York $2,000 apartment is like $2,500 to $3,000. The prices rival New York and Los Angeles and in some cases are even worse. The one downside i see in Korea is the high deposits. It is a recipe for disaster giving your landlord that much money. Typically in the US, deposits for rents are never greater than one month's rent. Also sometimes the first month is free when you sign a contract for a year or more.

I now live in a much smaller city (Salt Lake City, Utah) and own my home, which is 3BR 2BA, which I bought in 2007. I live in the states and the amount i’m paying for my 1 bedroom apt, i could be paying monthly on a mortgage for a house. If you’re curious:
    My apt is pretty spacious 1 bedroom, single full bathroom (has bathtube/shower), full living room, full kitchen and a laundry room. My apt is also equipped automatically from the owners of the complex with a washer, dryer, refrigerator, diswasher, stove and microwave. It also has central air (built in air conditioning and heating). They also allow pets, but you have to pay a pet fee every month. I pay $1,085 per month for rent alone. It doesn’t include gas/electric, internet and cable of which i have pay separately from my rent. So i’m essentially paying upwards of about $1,200 per month for my apt.

    I'm in shock at how your apartments are in the low hundreds like that. That's insane! Here you won't get anything for $450, not even a room in a house LOL It's no less than $900 for that. And it will be old like that old Korean one room--more like a Goshiwon. I pay $1100 for a one bedroom and that's considered cheap where I am and I have no counters in my kitchen space. I can't move or I'll be paying $1400+ for the same amount of space somewhere else. That "expensive" Korean apartment looks worth the price to me. Everything is clean and updated. Here that would be a 3 bedroom in a rough neighborhood with nothing updated and falling apart and bugs. Also, those apartments in NY were super cheap lmao Those were amazing finds. If you watch docs, living in less than average apartments go for like $3000 and up & that's like a 2BR.

    I live in Oklahoma. Average rent here for an apartment is $1,000 for one bedroom if you want a "decent" one. This is excluding all the bills. That is relatively less expensive compared to a lot of states, however, our paying wages aren't as high as New York's or California's. It's still a struggle for most of us, living pay check to pay check or being flat out broke is extremely common. I'd KILL for an apartment that was $500 or $600. The only way I could get out on my own was if I had a roommate that made a bit more than me, and that's just to live with essentials.

    It's getting expensive outside the city because these damn transplants who drove up the NYC rents are venturing out. 😒 a 1bdroom in an ok neighborhood in my area is min $2k now. I'm 40 min by train outside the city & my apt is ~$1400, luckily in a rent controlled building I've been in for awhile.
    Oh and that ur salary has to be 40x the rent for majority of buildings so u better have a good job or be ready to find a roommate. Let's not even mention that to move in u need 1st & last month rent plus security deposit. So for my apt if i was moving in today i'd need to make min $80k annually and $6000 upfront. That's not including the broker fee.

    There is a 0% chance that those NYC tours were unprepared. Even if they happened to be on their way home, nobody would let some guy with his camera come in, and despite the small size of the apartments, none of them had any clutter or mess. They were all perfectly cleaned, as if prepared to give a tour. I thought Seoul was more expensive than that! I'm glad it's not, but people in NYC might be getting paid more, if only to compensate for the extra cost of living there.

    Texas is vastly cheaper, I am getting ready a 4 bedroom 2 bath house with 3 car garage that is 40 minutes outside of downtown Houston and I will rent it for 1800$, I got a 3 bedroom 1 bath house for 1000$. the big place is 3000sqf plus and the 3 bedroom is 1200sqf. my cheapest is a 2 bed 2 bath for 800$. mind you normal pay is much higher and there are tons of jobs within a few miles if you do not want to go into a city.

    I mean, if you think about moving to London (capital of the UK) You're looking at a minimum of like $800 for a shared room. For a studio on your own? Like $1,600.

    haha in israel you wont get anything near that with 660 dollars a month, back thten, years ago , the chepaest you can have to rent was a minimun 1130 dollars a month. nowdays they are all past 4000 shekels, and we dont have those small cheap houses like you can afford in japan or korea, those small studio apartments with a shared toilet and kitchen. we dont havr anything like that, so unless you cant afford or split with roomates above 1130 dollars, you aint moving no where out of your parents house. deposits are usuallly 5000 shekels wich is 1413 dollars. and if you rent a furnished apartmen then you can expect up to 10000 shekels
