- The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its 11th Soryu-class diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK), JS Ōryū (SS-511) おうりゅう.
=====================
JS Ōryū (SS-511) joins the JMSDF’s Submarine Flotilla 1, based in Kure. It is the first-in-class boat to feature lithium-ion batteries.
JS Oryu is the 11th Soryu-class submarine delivered to the JMSDF (the 6th built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the other 5 ones having been built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries). Oryu (おうりゅう) means Phoenix Dragon. SS-511’s keel was laid in November 2015, the SSK was launched in October 2018.

A world class submarine probably delivered on time with no faults and within budget the exact opposite of UK defence procurement...
Maybe they even returned the extra money they saved building this.
A nuclear submarine can outperform an SSK.
US will be even worse
@@zachjones6944 actually, not really,
the only advantage is the ability to stay submerged almost indefinitely but at the same time, conventional subs are both. cheaper and easier to maintain and it is generally agreed they tend to be quieter as well compared to nuclear counterparts. And whem it comes to Japan, they have the best of the best Lithium-ion batteries in these new subs with decades of RnD into the manufacturing of them making them almost certainly the very best conventional subs today.
Back in 2015 in a training exercise, the USS Corpus Christi, a Los Angeles class sub, was to combat the Indian Kilo class sub INS Sindhudhvaj in a search and destroy simulation. The Indian sib detected and simulated a torpedo fire on the Christi which was determined to have struck before she even realised she was spotted. Now given, the Los Angeles is not the most advanced US sub with the Virginia class being superior and quieter but it still shows that anuclear sub is not invincible.
Sub battles are not fought submerged circumnavigating the globe 26 times.
im not saying that nuclwar subs are worthless but to say they outclass conventional subs purely for the reasoning that they are nuclear is preposterous. Endurance to stay submerged is not the only factor in combat and the Japanese sub is easily one of the most advanced sporting amazing endurance estimates with their efficient batteries with the preceding Soryu class able to stay submerged undetected for at least three weeks.
@@colin.k6263 damn you must be really good at writing essay 😂
Pricewise and performancewise this is the best submarine.
beautiful masterpiece of engineering! well done Kawasaki!
It would have being a simple matter for Japan to enlarge these subs to meet Australia's long range requirements. What a pity! These will outperform nuclear subs in stealth under battery power by far.
the problem is australia navy/government thought Japan doesn't have any experienced in building defence weapons for foreign country.
@@neotzin you are right, lol did you hear some of the crazy things the aussies were saying!
Soryu are the largest conventional subs in the world and can go underwater for weeks just on AIP power. These are long range ocean going subs. It would have being a simple matter for Japan to modify Soryu design with lithium ion battery+ AIP and enlarge the fuel storage to fulfill Australia's long range/size requirement. Japan's subs are some of the highest performing conventional subs in the world, if not the quietest. Japan has being turning out these subs like clockwork, on time and on budget, every two years.
Mr Teacher It’s quite remarkable. They totally seem like they are in the same league as our UK submarines. If only we could put ours out as fast though. The size of our fleet is just pitiful.
@Brett Mitchell "no restriction"
Carefull with _cavitation_ (if your sub isn't using pump-jet) :P
Australia should have gotten these!
@Andrew Potter it's diesel/electric like this sub since you can't run on diesel while submerged; it's just that the batteries are Li-ion instead of metal hydride normal batteries I assume. The diesel engine in all non nuclear subs is there to recharge the batteries just like your hybrid vehicle and not to propel the boat directly.
@@eyeofthetiger6002 Think he knows that.
@@eyeofthetiger6002 It's to recharge lithium ion battery underwater using snorkel. Charge time is less than two hours.
@@eyeofthetiger6002 underwater, it uses either Stirling engine (AIP), lithium ion battery, or diesel engine (with snorkel). Last option result in larger sound signature but with lithium-ion battery, recharge time is down to hours.

They forgot to mention it is now the most quietest submarine to exist. This sub will be so hard to track and listen
Aren't they as silent as nuclear powered submarines? Except it's cheaper?

Excellent from India.
Same model was in the competition/offered for the Australian Sub project isnt it?.
Yes absolutely
@Brett Mitchell the RAN is getting a conventional Barracuda type submarine which is fast and long range
@Brett Mitchell
So Australia Navy wants to flex its arguebly most potent deterrent weapon away from Australia shores?.?.
@Brett Mitchell agree, but has Australia got the infrastructure and expertise to maintain nuclear subs? Don't forget all the countries with nuclear subs(the US, UK, France, Russia and China)all have nuclear industries of their own.(no coincidence that those countries are all permanent members of the UN security council).
@Brett Mitchell you're assuming that once refuelled a nuclear sub will be problem free for the next 30 years. The Royal Navy would dearly love such a sub as it can then lay off all their nuclear engineers and technicians for the next 30 years, lol. In any case, I believe it's highly unlikely that the UK will sell any of its Astute class boats to Australia or any of her allies for that matter simply because they are the backbone of the UK's defense strategy and the nuclear sub technology is possibly the most guarded state secret after the nuclear missiles launch codes! Don't forget only the US, UK, France and Russia have the capability to build their own nuclear subs; China and India rely on Russian technology to build theirs. So if Australia really wants nuclear subs, I suggest you cosy up to Putin, you just never know, although that might piss Trump off! Lol.
Can we use it as power bank?
Very nice looking submarine and very nice version of Old Lang Syne. Fascinating to see some Scottish/ English culture filtered through as a result of the British Occupation of postwar Japan. These subs came close to being brought in to service with the Royal Australian Navy but were pipped at the post by the French DCNS Barracuda diesel electric.
It goes back further than that (back to the 1880s)
The Japanese modeled their navy after the UK's Royal Navy with the British aides, equipment, and warships
(they even built their war college with bricks imported from the UK individually wrapped in Japanese paper)
Do they carry powerbank incase?
The RL SS-511 Oryu has just commissioned, while her light novel counterpart in the isekai light novel Nihonkoku Shoukan, she already tasted her first kill against the WW2-level country, the Gra Valkas Empire
To be honest Japan have all the capabilities to became military powerhouse. It was even said that if not because of the Pacifist and anti-Nuclear Policy, they will be able to develop and own a Nuclear weapon cause they have all the technology and capabilities needed to developed a nuclear weapon. In fact their military budget is less than 1% of their GDP and their constitution forbid any military asset that have offensive capabilities or one that was considered as offensive. This is why Japan have Helicopter Carrier/Destroyer instead of Aircraft Carrier cause the government argue in the Diet that Helicopter was a defensive asset and used mostly used for defensive purpose instead of offensive purpose (though it was said they secretly built the Helicopter Carrier large enough for an Aircraft so they can upgrade it to became an Aircraft Carrier in the future). Also any effort to militarize or increase the military asset or enlarge the military was very controversial in Japanese Diet. So when considered all of this, i think Japan was a powerfull military powerhouse. As a matter of fact, 2018 data showcased that Japan only spend 0.9% of Japanese GDP for military expenditure contrast to the third largest military expenditure Saudi Arabia with 8.8% of their GDP, China the second largest military expenditure with 3.2% of their GDP and S.Korea with 2.6% of their GDP yet Japan still managed to be placed in the number 9 for top 15 of the largest military expenditure of SIPRI Military Expenditure Database for 2018. Imagine if Japan spend the same amount of the percentage per GDP that China spend for military expenditure. For 2020, Japan is ranked 5 out of the 138 countries considered for the annual Global FirePower review. It hold a Pwrlndx rating of 0.1501 (0.0000 considerd 'perfect').

That’s a pretty awesome Mitsubishi. Where can I get one?
This is the Prius of submarines
A little bit more to this submarine than just the first lithium-ion batteries used in a submarine.
They are also equipped with Kockums Stirling engines and diesel engines.
The drivetrain works extremely well with all components integrated and working well together .
It still hasn't got the outright performance of a nuclear submarine but fifty billion plus over thirty years is pretty good value for a small fleet with no uranium and nuclear waste to worry about.
And they are a little bit quieter than a nuclear submarine if not as heavily armed .
35 seconds ago this video was posted...
Quite a sight to see them wearing mask while on comissioning
I'm curious to what new assets JMSDF is looking to getting soon
The sun rises
Regarding 39,000 tiles that British Astute class submarines have...anechoic tiles date back to World War II under Nazi Germany.
US nuclear subs have them, Russian nuclear and conventional subs have them, and so does JMSDF subs. In fact, I would expect most modern submarines, all around the world, to possess them.
With Japanese submarines, even the internals are muffled, down to minute details, such as light bulbs.
When Japanese naval engineers and technicians were consulted regarding submarine technology transfer to Australia, one of the things that they thought would be hard to be hard to duplicate in Australia in matter of years was welding technology.
It took Japan decades to perfect its naval submarine welding technology.
BTW, I've seen missing anechoic tiles on US, Russian, and UK subs but have never seen one missing on JMSDF submarines.

Awesome japan from Philippines
As expected from Japan!
There are more diesel-electric submarines in Indian and Pacific Ocean than nuclear ones. Odds of Royal Australian Navy submarines facing hostile nuclear ones are slight compared to odds of facing a hostile non-nuclear one.
So I'm not sure what you gain by comparing the performance of two nuclear subs (Astute vs. Virginia) against each other.
This is especially true, considering the performance of older Swedish Gotland class AIP submarines, which have performed spectacularly well against US carrier fleet in war games. As you may well know, one of the tasks that Virginia class submarines engage in is to act as escort for carrier task force.
The designation of "Black Holes" was given to improved Russian Kilo class submarines initially by US Navy due to difficulty of tracking them.
Vietnam bought 6 improved Kilo class submarines from Russia for around $300M each. These six submarines have being a major source of headache for Chinese submarines, both nuclear and conventional, due to difficulty of tracking them.
Improved Kilo class have neither AIP nor lithium ion battery BTW. But they are still extremely difficult to track.
German Type 214 submarines have an effective range of 12,000 miles and that is without lithium ion battery but with hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Lithium ion battery technology is considered to be a game changer due to high power generation combined with extremely short charging time.
So unless the sole purpose of submarines for Australia is to burst underwater at 30 knots without refueling for 30 years, I don't see how enhanced Soryu or German Type 214 submarines fail to meet Australia's needs.
Regarding partnership with Japan, both Australia and Japan's future is more tied with Asia, than with US. Even China's future is probably more tied with rest of Asia. It's estimated that without open sea route, Chinese economy can at most, last two months.
Despite the military posturing and rhetoric, Japan and China are heavily vested in each other. They are also heavily vested in rest of Asia. I would expect the future of Australia to be much closely aligned to Asia than it already is.
If you doubt this, lookup the trade volume that Australia does with Europe and US (20% or less), compared to Asian countries. This imbalance will be even more tilted in favor of Asia, in the future.
I really Love this submarine
จะเอากี่ลำเรือดำน้ำ.. Music. Dirctor no.9

Wow, that is very impressive. I wonder if we are working on the same thing for our UK submarines. I mean I shouldn’t be surprised that Japan is ahead in the sort of area, but I’m a little surprised we haven’t been even talking about it until this video. It definitely seems like the right way to go. Can’t believe it took them this long to complete the submarine though seeing as the actual body was floated two years ago.
I think this submarine is almost impossible to detect. Sweden have a Stirling engine in their Gotland class submarines and they can sink a carrier from USA. They have done so in an exercise, they sank a carrier from USA, not for real of course, but in an exercise and the americans never found the submarine during the two years this exercise was.
The rest of the Sōryū submarines use the same Sterling AIP diesel-electric engines from Kawasaki+Kockums.
The Li-Ion powered submarines are intended to replace this technology but they want to evaluate it first in these two submarines.
Sony Xperia waterproofing got intense development. But the battery technology still using Li-Ion
Congratulations Japan! Japan needs to become a global military power again!! Japan and the USA along with India.(if they're on the right side of the fence)can keep balance in the region.

I would love to see them with katana , bunsai bunsai bunsai.
I suppose this is the next best option after nuclear for a submarine;however, like your mobile phones, they still need to be recharged. Just make sure those Li-ion batteries are not 🔥 prone like those in Boeing's dreamliner! Lol.

@@usmc-veteran73-77 I hazard to guess that it's a throwback to IJN traditions. Just seems strange that they swing their arms. Also, always found it interesting how the Japanese choose to wear their dress uniforms so loose. Not even the Kiwis wear their uniforms that baggy. I think it has something to do with the fact that they deliberately don't want them to look like the old pre -'45 style of dress; just a guess though. Also interesting that they all wear pretty much the same dress uniform with no distinction between enlisted and commissioned; I've spoken to Matelots who saw JMSDF ships docking in Plymouth, and they found it confusing knowing who to salute.

I heard that the Philippines before the EDSA revolution, Dictator Marcos has many uncontinued/trashed military projects including the development of submarines with the help of former Nazi and US(Canadian) engineers whom were also responsible of Bongbong 1 missile project and some military advancement. I wonder if the Philippines could keep its rising superpower if that time's current administration was kept. It fascinated me the most before EDSA was that aevery homes owns high powered caliber guns before all or some were confiscated after martial law. Extremely similar in US homes. FPJ films for example, those are real unloaded guns they use in the movies.

Primary defining characteristic of submarine is stealth, not speed or range. Submarines are not designed to fight naval battles like a surface vessel but through stealth, unseen and unheard, when they attack.
Even a nuclear submarine (SSN) cannot outrun a torpedo from a conventional sub (SSK) or an attack from an ASW aircraft or even a helicopter/destroyer combo from a Chinese Type 055 destroyer!
Heck, many surface vessel's top speed is in excess of 30 knots. China's Type 055 destroyer's top speed is in excess of 30 knots and they are not even nuclear powered!
If speed is of essence, you wouldn't send a submarine or a ship, but an aircraft and/or a missile.
As for improved Russian Kilo being useless or not being a "black hole," NATO forces were able to track them when they operating under diesel power but the moment they switched to lead acid battery, it was altogether a different story.

"Sources have told The Times [that] the Royal Navy nuclear powered submarine is believed to have been stalked by at least one but possibly two Russian Kilo-class subs - dubbed "the Black Hole" because they are so quiet and hard to track."

I still don’t get why the JSDF fly the flag of Imperial Japan (with the sun rays) instead of 🇯🇵. They constantly tell the rest of Asia not to judge them by a previous era, yet raise the ensign that represents it. You don’t see the German Bundeswehr use an SS or Swastika, abd even the Russians troops don’t hang the Soviet one either. Don’t erase or revise history, but don’t advertise a reminder either.
