      I thought I was sold on the Tamron but the thing that had me in doubt was the yellow tint you get on the tamron. I'm not a big fan of it. The sony lenses seem to give you more natural colors. I think it's even more yellow on cameras before the A7III. Rhe A7III seems to give you a less yellowish tint.

    I’m getting the Tamron to go with a 16-35 f4, and a 70-200 f4. I think the price is right and for the middle focal length I’m looking for the f2.8 will be nice for lower light situations. I like the macro utility as well and for travel it a decent day trip one and done lens. Nice and light. From what I’ve seen this lens has several weather sealed areas so I think it was built to last.

  • @magicalsnek

    The Tamron supports the inbody distortion correction just like any other native lens which is also applied to Video if enabled - I had to enable the correction for the lens in the menu, it wasn't enabled by default.
    Further there's an embedded profile in the RAWs that at least Capture One can read and it corrects that automatically. Lightroom on the other hand fails to use the embedded profile but the recent update brought a profile for that lens as well.
    So distortion is not an issue on the Tamron just like it isn't on the native lenses (most of them apply the correction).

    • @brois841
      @brois841 6 років тому

      Please tell me more about this, because for me, the distortion is probably the biggest reason I'm shying away from Tamron.

  • @Sam-mc2dk

    The Tamron is a great value for the money. The 24-105 F4 looks like a good overall lens but it is 500 more and at F4. I am not too worried about the lens firmware issue because Sony is the second largest share holder in Tamron so I bet Tamron will have good support from Sony regarding lens compatibility.

    Converted from canon to an a7iii and my lens setup is now: 16-36 2.8, 24-105 4, 70-200 2.8, with the 55 and 85 1.8s for primes. I don’t feel like I’ll ever need to buy another lense with this. The 24-105 stays on the camera 90% of the time.

    • @abhinavashishaind
      @abhinavashishaind 5 років тому

      Just one question.
      Why the 16-35 f2.8 and not the f4?

    • @goblinboya
      @goblinboya 5 років тому +1

      @@abhinavashishaind That's the setup I am aiming for, except for the 55. Right now I own the 85 f1.8, the 24-105 f4, and the 16-35 f2.8. Will eventually add one more which is the 70-200 f2.8. In my opinion, if you mainly do landscape, the f4 will be just fine. I went with the f2.8 for two reasons, one because I would like to do night and astro photography, which the f2.8 comes in handy. Secondly, because the 16-35 f2.8 GM lens is rated as one of the sharpest zoom lens from sony. I use it at my work for large product photography in which details are very important. So far it's been very good! Used the 24-105 before, but it clearly doesnt do it as good as the 16-35 f2.8.
      That's my personal experience with these lens. Hope it helps.

      MX Visuals It depends what you do. The 55 1.8 is an amazing lens for portraits and just general shooting. I use the Tamron on my A7iii and it is amazing. I personally need the 2.8 and the Tamron is just so sharp! How ever if you are only getting one of these kits - I would get number 1. Because for those blurry backgrounds you can use the 55. Then the 24-105 will be the lens that can do everything. If you are thinking about getting a telephoto lens is the future, I would get Number 2. And personally I wouldn’t bother with number 3.

    To sum up, Tamron wins on : sharpness, Fstop 2.8, size, weight, price, AF. The sony wins on : (much) bigger range, distorsion, vignetting (the last two can be fixed in pp).

    Works perfectly 100% of the time, if turning On while in Stills mode (you can then switch to Video mode after that, if needed).
    AF issues 100% of the time, if turning On while in Video mode.

    First of all I love Sony’s G & GM lenses! I decided to buy the Tamron after renting the 24-105 f4. Besides the awfully cheap lens hood and cap, it really proved I made the right choice for me anyway. Due to the fact it can focus just 2 ½” (@28mm) and 8 ½” at 75mm’s the background separation/bokeh is similar to an f1.8 - f/2. It has no problem focusing quickly even in low light. Tamron has a winner here and ironically has made Sony money.

    Tamron won out for me (it`s late 2019 and FWare V3) , the cropping ability of the A7R2 and R3 let alone the new R4 makes the 75mm restriction not an issue and it being F2.8 and prime sharp in the middle / and sharp enough at the edges even wideopen along with the not insubstantial size / weight difference on these tiny bodies made it a no brainer for me , also not having OIS built in makes sample variance far better when buying and none of those random whacked out edges which OIS can cause on Sony OIS lenses .. even at the same price I`d choose the Tamron on R series bodies for all this and of course weight and size, the 24-105 would be perfect handling wise on a Camera of D850 size , I thought it a bit unwieldy on a small mirrorless A7R series ..

  • @ductritran8637

    You know what's funny, it's that I am a Nikon user (photography hobbyist), and I'm saving up to switch to the Sony mirrorless system because my friend has an A7sII (where he is on crop mode because of an 18-105mm) and I was instantly in love. Anyways, I'm currently saving up for an A6000 (beginner here) and the fabled Sony PZ 18-105mm f4 G. But I just discovered that Sigma actually has a 17-50mm f2.8 lens for Nikon APS-C. Therefore, I watched this comparison to weigh the differences between having a 17-50mm f2.8 (25.5-75mm equiv) versus an 18-105mm f4 (27-157.5mm equiv). So thanks for not changing my mind on switching to the mirrorless system. Lol

      It's about versatility, Max is prioritizing begin able to frame the shot how he wants over ISO performance, shallow depth of field, and weight savings. You may have a different opinion. For me, I shoot primes whenever I can, so I only bring out the Zoom when I need big reach or when I need to pack just the one lens. In these cases, the 24-105 is better for me. But if your main lens is your zoom and you shoot normal stuff, the sharper and smaller Tamron might be better.

      Tested both extensively on a A7R II and I have to say the 24-105 is great. Contrast, Colours and Buildquality are superior, bigger Range, stabilized, af/mf-switch, additional button.
      It may depend on the copy but except for the center (and only the center) the sony is doing better on my A7R II.
      Maybe thats only noticeable at 42MP. I would always recommend the 24-105. The only case is if you know you shoot 80%+ in really low light environment.
      If you have the 800 for the Tamron, wait till Christmas and buy the 24-105 after ;)

      I have been using the sony 24-105 for 4 months now, and I have to say this is better than any lens I owned before. It stays on my camera 80% of the time. Don't under estimate the OSS . I can get good shots down to 1/15 shutter speed which makes up for the f4.

    Well I wish that Sony would work on decreasing their minimum focus distances! Thats my biggest gripe with the lenses I have for my A6000. I'd probably still go for the 24-105 when I switch to FF just because its basically the perfect focal range for an all-around lens. If the Tamron went to 24, it would be a no-brainer with the price difference.

    Thank you for this excellent comparison. You get to the heart of the matter fast, really appreciate that. Tough call comparing these two for most people. I went for the Sony because 105mm is my favorite focal length. I would be more inclined to the Tamron if I was pairing it with a 70-200mm, shooting an event with two cameras, or if I expected to live more on the wider end of the lens shooting wide open for background blur. And that macro capability of the Tamron is fantastic, tempting. YMMV.

    My wife and I both have an A7ii each. So the simplest solution was to get both, the Tamron and the Sony. It's too close to call, between them both. However I already own two full frame lenses, the 85mm f1.8 and the 70-200f4. So I have a lens starting at 70mm so the longer reach of the Sony is not essential to me. That, plus I needed a wider lens to compliment the 70-200 2.8. For general “all in one” use, I’d have gone with the the Sony 24-105. No AF issues with so far with the Tamron.

    I am sick of hearing about the Sony build quality. and the Tamron focus firmware issue. allot of the first Sony 24/105 lenses had issues. I heard about people returning them many times, one guy said he returned three of them in a row. and I was just looking at a comment on a Sony Facebook group, it said that his 24/70 f2.8 GM witch is just over one year old has the rubber focus ring getting out of shape and coming off, and then two other people joined the post saying it has happened to there 24/70 GM lens. one guy said Sony charged him 200 dollars to fix it even with Sony pro support. and all three people said it happened right after the one year warranty period ended. but my Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC that is maybe 6 years old has never had any issues. and as far as how these two lenses compare, it really comes down to what is more important to you, is it having the 24/105 focal length. or having f2.8.
    but I have to say that the Tamron has lots of advantages. it's over a ( hundred grams lighter ) also (close focuses )
    it's ( f2.8 ) and ( it's sharper ) and in the US has a ( 6 year warranty ) while Sony has a one year warranty. and the Tamron is ( 500 dollars less money ) so it makes it hard for me to want an f4 lens with only the advantage of the focal range. but with many disadvantages.

    • @kcmurda
      @kcmurda 6 років тому +1

      photographerjonathan Haha no image quality always comes first But I live in NYC and i am starting car shoots and urban shoots. I got to try one of my friends nikon d850, his lens had the buttons on it and wow what a world of difference. Makes switching from action shot to quick manual/tripod easy, instead of spending time going through settings between each transition. If you ever been to car events or stuff like that you will know you must be extremely fast before you lose the shot you are looking for.
      Also from all the reviews the image quality is not drastic between those 2 lenses. They both have good image quality. It all comes down to which one is more “convenient” to you.

    Hi Max,
    Thanks for this channel, it has been extremely helpful to me as a new A7iii owner.
    Here is my dilemma and maybe an idea for the 3rd video on this topic:
    Trying to own just 2 lenses if possible, thanks to you I have my eye set on the Sony 24-105 G f4, but the F4 part is really scary since I love to shoot at low light events, street and landscapes while I travel.
    The options I can think of are:
    A .- Tamron 28-75 F2.8 + Tessar 16-35 F4 = $2.2K [Video Friendly]
    B .- Tamron 28-75 F2.8 + Sony 24 F1.4 GM = $2.2K [Fastest]
    C.- Sony 24-105 G f4 + Laowa 15mm F2 FE Zero-D = $2.2K [Wildcard]
    Could we have a Lowlight Showdown between this Tamron and the Sony 24-105 F4?
