Very well deserved, even back then. They were riding a wave as one of the hottest things in wrestling for nearly a decade. On top of that, they did it by doing everything the opposite of the way its always been done- which means that they knew how to get themselves over better than everybody else, who at the time had power, kept telling them they'd fail. The problem with superkicks is it's a finisher and either do it once and finish a match or don't do it. Now people use a superkick like an armbar or headlock was once used as a spot and then do it 20 times a match. That's why he said stop with the superkicks. Do it once and win with it or don't use it.
Super kicks were not always finishers. The Rockers used the double superkick as a transitional move and that was in the 80’s. even in the 90s Shawn Michaels didn’t use it as a finisher until 95.
Look at the DDT and that should tell you all you need to know. Its usually not a finisher anymore unless it has some kind of flourish like the Paradigm Shift or the 1916/Bloody Sunday. Once a move is old and gets used by everybody, it can't really be treated like a finisher anymore.
He told to not use the tombstone piledriver, because it was hilarious, that young bucks were doing it. It's a very good finish and should be used by main eventers, who look like somebody. With Matt Jackson doing a tombstone piledriver, it just looks like he's trying to immitate the Undertaker. It's stupid.

I do enjoy their work to a degree but if you look at AEW style matches for example its finisher...near fall...finisher...near fall...finisher...near fall and so on for the second half of almost every match. You can understand why wrestlers like this are told to protect certain finishing moves and dial it back a little, or it just turns into spot after spot
