It's a slap in the face to Benoit David who did a fine job on Fly From Here. But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I'm curious to hear how it sounds with Trevor Horn on lead vocals.
Sounds like you don't know that Horn and Downes wrote it before joining Yes, and that Yes played a short version of it on the Drama tour in 1980. The Buggles recorded a demo back then. It's on the remastered version of Adventures in Modern Recording.
I know they wrote it and recorded the original demo, but it doesn't matter, it's still a slap in the face to Benoit David to remove his vocals and replace them. I know it's not a huge deal since you can still get the original version of the album, but it reminds me of George Lucas's special editions when he would cut out the original actors and replace the prequel actors to make things "more consistent".
Benoit David sang and pronounced and felt all the nuances of the songs he sang on Fly From Here! TOTAL BULLSHIT that he didn't sing it quite right because english is his 2nd language! Benoit David sounded soooooo much like Trevor Horn from the 1980 Yes Drama Album. He did a fine job. It really is an insult to re-record the album. However, I want to hear the Horn versions of course.
I completely agree with you. My review above stated essentially the same thing. The album was saying correctly the first time by David with emotion and it was sung perfectly. Horn's version is missing the emotion, regardless if he wrote the song or not. This album should not of been made. What's even worse is they actually Photoshopped a picture of Horn over David's face for this redo album. Now that is spooky.
Horn replacing David’s vocals does not sit well with me at all. I thought David did a fine job on FFH and the show I caught on that tour in Atlanta was first-rate.
I was okay with this project, but something doesn't sit right with me about Benoit David's "not native English-speaking" being a reason to re-record an entire album. Just say you wanted to redo it without the lame justification.
Benoit David did a nice job on Fly From Here. He sounds a lot like Trevor Horn to begin with. I can't imagine Trevor singing it much better. Seems pointless. Honestly, how many Yes fans have been clamoring over a Horn vocal of Fly From Here? I'm guessing very little.
Pete Banks, Bill Bruford, and Pat Moraz, can all tell you that if you see another member of YES talking to a musician not in the band, that anything can happen. So moves like this have always been a part of YES culture as a band. Two bands playing YES music, never saw that coming. Can't wait to hear "Fly From Here" with Horn singing.
FYI-Bill left of his own accord. Said that Close To The Edge was as far as he felt that he could go with Yes, and that all that he could do after that would be Son of Close To The Edge. He wanted to challenge himself in a new musical situation: King Crimson. Look at some of his interviews-I think that he talked about it on the black and white interviews around the Union Tour.
Hi John, Well, I am a fan of the Drama album and the line-up. I have a couple of versions of the album. Loved the Fly from Here from a few years ago.... and found how much Benoit David sounded like Jon and Trevor. So I guess, the aficionado and big Yes fan in me will need to investigate. So.. YES... a couple of versions of Fly From Here. Thanks, John Have a blessed Easter Tino
Benoit David was an awesome replacement for Anderson. His elf-like voice was perfect for Yes. Benoit David never should have been kicked out. I wonder if Benoit David was ousted because his support vanished when Squire passed.
Well, David was out in 2012, and Davison was in then. Squire died in 2015. So, *that* isn't it. David got ill, and his voice went, and he backed out. Davison had been recommended earlier, but wasn't available when David was back in 2008. Horn- in some ways like Howe- is a fiddly, perpetually-unsatisfied perfectionist with his production work. More likely, he was just still bothered by some little thing or another in the old mix or arrangement, and he had time and permission to go back and tweak it again, and he could do it well enough himself without having to bring in another singer. The rest is PR copy and rationalization. Having heard it, the original David vocals are superior, but I much prefer the newer rearrangement (very noticeable in places) and mix on Return Trip. Outside of the FFH suite, though, not too much more is changed aside from a bonus Howe track. FWIW, I think David had the best timbre to his voice out of all the Yes singers, but Davison is the most technically competent live singer the band has ever had, including Anderson. Oh well- pick your favorite flavor, no worries.
I completely agree with you but you should know that David was not kicked out of the band but became ill and was unable to finish the tour, hence the entrance of Davidson
My comment here is not meant to be a cut on anyone or anybody. All are talented in Yes in all of their incarnations. But I strongly disagree with the remaking of this album. First of all, Benoit David, the lead singer of Yes for several years maybe French-Canadian, but he also speaks perfect English and you would not know that he is from French/Canada unless you read about that or asked him personally. Trevor Horn wrote Fly From Here. David sang it perfectly with heart and soul on the original album in 2011. There was no French accent or anything, I'm not sure I understand any of that point. Listen to the album. What there is is heart and soul from an excellent lead singer who was the lead singer of YES far longer than Trevor Horn. I thought it was a slap in the face of David for Yes to rerecord the album and vocals only eight years after the album was released. They even Photoshoped a picture of Trevor Horn over David's face for this album redo. In my humble opinion, the first album is better. It is sung better and with more emotion in it. It simply did not need to be redone. This is no slice on Trevor Horn as he is a fantastic producer, singer and Drama was a fantastic album while he was lead singer for Yes, which was one album. He was unable to hit the vocals of Jon Anderson while on tour which caused problems. This was not a problem for Benoit David as he came from a Yes tribute band in Canada and was hand selected by Yes. Again I want to make it clear that I am not cutting down anyone in the bands or Trevor Horn. All of these people are marvelously talented. I am simply making the point that I do not think that the second album is better than the first album. On the contrary I think the first album is better than the second album because I think it was sung better. And photo shopping Horn's face over David's face on the album is kind of spooky.
There appeasers to be a general disregard for members, ex-members of Yes, by their brethren. It's not really necessary but it does have consequences. I'd be quite sad about it if I were Benoit. I can see some people considering that this is a final chance to have the Drama line-up on disc again -but that was an option when Fly From Here was first recorded; Trevor Horn could have been the lead singer then. For me, this is a move that doesn't respect either an individual, or the band's intent at the time. Frankly it's a little weird and comes across as completely self-indulgent.
I agree completely. David's singing is far better than horns. This album did not need to be redone. David sang with soul and emotion while Horn just sang it. The really spooky part of it is that they Photoshop David's face on the new album and put in Horn space instead. Now that is disrespect. I mean, at least get a new picture. So the picture is not even real. Very strange.
Yeah, I drifted away from Yes long ago because Jon writes the same song over and over, using lyrics that only mean anything to him. How many times do I need to hear lyrics that sound like they're generated by a new-age hippie bot?
I have lots of different versions of Beethoven's 9th Symphony in my collection and all have merit and very likely none sound remotely as we might have heard the piece in Beethoven's time. So what's the big deal? With some of its members passing from this plane of existence, Yes is transitioning into the realm of Beethoven and other classics -- worthy of multiple interpretations.
Yes..I think the issue they have is that Benoit sounds more like Jon Anderson than Trevor Horn. I think Benoit did a great job and erasing him from the Yes discography is pretty crappy (imho). I love Yes...but come on guys.
Its not the first time an album has been reworked. Mike Oldfield with Tubular Bells springs to mind. Whichever version still has merit. A problem can be release dates are targets that have to be met, so things can be rushed. The result can be a work that is not satisfactory to the mind of the composer, even though it might come across as being great to the listener. A reworking is welcome but the original will still have its merit.
I have not thought of that group “Yes” forever, so I am going to go on line and listen to their song tonight!! OMGDAVY@gomgdavy, Los Angeles, California Thank You
Well I Just listened to “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and black and white production!! It’s nice, kind of short but pretty!! OMGDAVY@gomgdavy, Los Angeles, California Be sure and check out locations for Rod Stewart also Ron Wood, who will be in Grand Prairie, Texas, , 6/9/2018 or Saturday, 7/14/2018 at the Greek Theatre and San Jose, Saturday, 8/25/2018. Be sure and check first, maybe sold out if you wait to long, check out other locations too
Hi John. I think your videos are awesome and thank you for making them. So you ask me to share what I think? I think that statement about Benoit’s vocals is a big pile of bullsh*t! His voice is the most redeeming quality of that CD: new, fresh, melodic..because he can actually sing. Yes is my favorite band but their greed and arrogance and insensitivity to people’s feelings never ceases to disappoint me. For some crazy reason, they either want to remove Benoit’s voice from the Yes catalogue (can’t hear him on Spotify anymore) or probably take away any royalties for his role as singer. And for Trevor Horn to have any opinion on this matter...what the hell? Is he the producer or the owner of the band? I love all of them, seriously, they are my musical heroes, but this is a new low. And by “Return Trip”... I assume it means: “Hey, if you thought we were done kicking people out of bands and disrespecting them and embarrassing ourselves in front of our fans...in case it’s been too long for you to remember (2 Yes’, kicking Jon out, using Rabin for his new talent, bait and switch on the Drama tour), here is a brand new reminder that we can still kick people in their musical chops! Ha-Yah!” Yuck.
I would have been fine with Trevor doing the FFH vocals, IF he had just done the vocals. But he mucked up everything and Return Trip really sucks. And I miss Beniot. Davison really makes the Steve group SUCK
Benoit had his own twist to singing similarly to Jon A, while Davison seems to be trying to mimic Jon, thinking that Jon’s voice is only high pitched, and missing all the nuances, inflections, bottom range, and SOUL of his voice. Davison just has a weak voice, sorry.
Trevor Horn produced the most important Yes LP going that captured the video era with hits like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" which brought the band back into the top 40. Trevor Rabin's guitar work was behind that surge as well as both gentleman making 87's "Big Generator" featuring "It can happen" another video friendly recording. I've got mixed feelings on the two versions of Yes but I respect Trevor Horn's opinion to see both versions while you can as these artists are in their 70's so why fight it, but rather, take advantage of these brilliant musicians in their twilight years. It's all good. I'll have to check out "Fly From Here" I was not aware of this record but love Trevor Horn's production talents.
I saw the band at an outdoor concert with Benoit on vocal and Wakeman’s son on keys. Benoit’s voice was shot and the keys kept having technical problems. Both problems surely had a lot to do with being outdoors, but I was really underwhelmed with the vocals.
I grew up with 'The Yes Album'. All through the years and changing of band mates, Jon Anderson was and will always be the voice for YES! I have seen Benoit David and Jon Davison on stage with Yes, still not Jon Anderson.
A Trevor Horn vanity project and nothing more. They've even airbrushed Benoit out of the publicity photo for the project. Reminds me of Stalinist photo touch ups.
Steve Howe is a virtuoso maestro. Trevor Rabin is a tasteful shredder. Both are in the top ranks, but Steve is a legend guitarist and a huge part of the classic YES sound.
Trev plays Steve's stuff beautifully and with reverence. Steve sort of plays while Trev's songs are performed by the rest of the band. Plus, Trev can sing and write music.
I have to agree with you. It wasn't Yes after Anderson left--I mean kicked out of the band he co-founded with Chris Squire. I can't stomach Jon Davidson. Benoit David was slight improvement but nobody can compare to the master. Jon Anderson was the heart and soul of Yes. Without him they are a cheap imitation.
Benoit David sang better on the album, but the production on the Return Trip is definitely interesting. I only wish Yes would include both versions of the album for fans to pick their own favorite version.
I think it should've been Trevor's vocals on FLY From Here in the 1st place (Not that Benoit were bad). I also wish the From a Page line up of YES recorded more; a complete album.
I've listened to the Trevor Horn re-working. The instrumental parts were better. But Trevor Horn's vocals were NOT an improvement. Benoît David sounded like a better version of Trevor Horn. Of course he sounded a lot like Horn because the song was written by Horn and he was being directed by Horn. But Benoît David has a better voice than Horn. His work with Mystery is excellent. He could have sounded more like Jon Anderson, but not with material originally written for Horn to sing. It was a huge ego thing for Horn, to re-do the album with his vocals. When they made a music video for the album, it was Trevor Horn who was on camera. The actual band was not in the video. WTF was THAT all about. Horn is known as a hit making producer, but this was out of hand.
A lineup representing 3 good albums is a minimum for an another version of a band to exist. For example, if Greg Rollie and Ansley Dunbar put together a group that played music from the first three Journey albums, I'd see that group - it would be as legit as the current lineup. With Anderson and Wakeman in the group as well, no one should question the legitimacy of this lineup.
Cancel each other out? The reason Tevor Rabin wouldn't play with Steve Howe is because Rabin's ego is too big to collaborate with another guitarist who's better.
Bobby Salvin Its the other way around. Steve wasn't fan of Sherwood much, when he was a second guitar player in Yes during the late 1990s and made it well known. Is fine with Sherwood now that he is playing bass and not competing with the maestro. Howe apparently also stopped Peter Banks from playing with Yes in a one off show during the Union tour. Howe seems to see himself as THE YES GUITARIST and doesn't want to share that spotlight with any other guitar player. ua-cam.com/video/5anl8talbWs/v-deo.html
What does it matter. Without Jon Anderson they will never be Yes. This Band should not be called YES it should be called The Buggles. As redoing the Fly from here LP with Trevor on vocals is pointless because the LP sucked anyway. Time to give it up guys and stop being YE$$$$.
It's a slap in the face to Benoit David who did a fine job on Fly From Here. But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I'm curious to hear how it sounds with Trevor Horn on lead vocals.
Would have been better if he had just rejoined.
Sounds like you don't know that Horn and Downes wrote it before joining Yes, and that Yes played a short version of it on the Drama tour in 1980.
The Buggles recorded a demo back then. It's on the remastered version of Adventures in Modern Recording.
Thanks "Ray" for that insightful information. That's really special...
Jesus, what a fuckin slap in the face to David. He did a fine job on FFH.

WickedWonder1979 I even prefer his voice rather than Trevor Horn's. But the twicks in the mix are better in the new version.
Jon Anderson is the only original member in either group
Benoit David did a nice job on Fly From Here. He sounds a lot like Trevor Horn to begin with. I can't imagine Trevor singing it much better. Seems pointless. Honestly, how many Yes fans have been clamoring over a Horn vocal of Fly From Here? I'm guessing very little.

Have a great Easter Tino. Thanks for the support...John
Turns out I like the first version better than Return Trip!
Total BS that Benoit David couldn't sing English as well as Trevor.
Yup. I could not agree more
Benoit David was an awesome replacement for Anderson. His elf-like voice was perfect for Yes. Benoit David never should have been kicked out. I wonder if Benoit David was ousted because his support vanished when Squire passed.

Benoit over the current singer any day.
Surely, Anderson, Wakeman and Rabin will be better than the other lot!
NOT
They should be pretty tight they have been playing the same set of hits for 3 years now.
Shitty and disrespectful thing to do. Whether you like the album or the singer, this is a crappy thing to do.
Very creepy. I wrote my own very long review above talking about just that. David's version is much better anyway as he is a better singer than Horn
My comment here is not meant to be a cut on anyone or anybody. All are talented in Yes in all of their incarnations. But I strongly disagree with the remaking of this album. Benoit sounded way better than Trevor. That was a complete misstep by Trevor Horn.
As much as I love Trevor Horn (Drama is one of my favourite Yes albums), I really didn't care much for Fly From Here: Return Trip.
Well, I looks like I have to take a return trip to blow you some stinky farts to the face. Lol 😂🤣
There appeasers to be a general disregard for members, ex-members of Yes, by their brethren. It's not really necessary but it does have consequences. I'd be quite sad about it if I were Benoit. No respect mr Horn. Lets redo the buggles with jon Anderson and Wakeman, need a singer and a wizard in the keys.
I thought Yes lyric were only hard to understand if Jon Anderson had wrote them?
Yeah, I drifted away from Yes long ago because Jon writes the same song over and over, using lyrics that only mean anything to him. How many times do I need to hear lyrics that sound like they're generated by a new-age hippie bot?

Hi John. I think your videos are awesome and thank you for making them. So you ask me to share what I think? I think that statement about Benoit’s vocals is a big pile of bullsh*t! without Chris Squire there is no Yes

i rather enjoyed Fly from here with Benoit But i love Drama looking forward to Trevor's vocals
A Trevor Horn vanity project and nothing more. They've even airbrushed Benoit out of the publicity photo for the project. Reminds me of Stalinist photo touch ups.
Just Some Guy Down the Memory Hole with you, Benoit...
As far as i am concerned the last studio Yes album is Magnification.Just let it be guys
Benoit David did great on this album and is a way better singer that Trevor.
do you have any news on Robin Trower ?
He sounds more like Jon Davison, which is maybe the real reason why the actual band vouched for that version… 😏
I think it should've been Trevor's vocals on FLY From Here in the 1st place (Not that Benoit were bad). I also wish the From a Page line up of YES recorded more; a complete album.
Interesting!

Why not Jon Davison on vocals?
A lineup representing 3 good albums is a minimum for an another version of a band to exist. For example, if Greg Rollie and Ansley Dunbar put together a group that played music from the first three Journey albums, I'd see that group - it would be as legit as the current lineup. In this case, Rabin played on the great 90125, the very good Big Generator, and the excellent Talk albums. With Anderson and Wakeman in the group as well, no one should question the legitimacy of this lineup.
The only true Yes singer is Jon Anderson
Why not Reunion 50?
because squire is dead.
There's too many notes! Just cut a few and it will be fine. -From Amadeus The Movie
(Referring to the players; not the music.)
Where was that pillar of wisdom when it was really needed in the 70s. Death to Prog ;)
Cancel each other out? The reason Tevor Rabin wouldn't play with Steve Howe is because Rabin's ego is too big to collaborate with another guitarist who's better.
Howe's an old fossilized statue. Rabin's fresh with creative energy.
I love (love love love) Steve Howe, but he's not an easy person to get along with.
No, Wakeman is not a fan of Steve Howe for firing his son.
Well he did play on just about every yes song that matters
What does it matter. Without Jon Anderson they will never be Yes. This Band should not be called YES it should be called The Buggles. As redoing the Fly from here LP with Trevor on vocals is pointless because the LP sucked anyway. Time to give it up guys and stop being YE$$$$.
WRONG
This language stuff is the most pathetic thing I´ve ever heard.
no squire. no yes.
True that!
He certainly was a master however Billy Sherwood is pretty darn good!
I agree. But, ABWH was awesome.
