Moonrise Kingdom's number 1 for me. It struck me at an age where running away from problems made sense, and the film made me reflect on the individuality of dealing with issues and how they sort of mould you as a person
Because I have a feeling it will be asked-I didn't use a specific age to define the three groups- George Carlin said it best when discussing old men "Old man isn’t really a time in your life or a period of years. It’s an attitude. Old man is a point of view. It’s a way of looking at things. Some guys are old men when they’re in their 20’s. You’ve met guys like that. They’re just wired like old men."
The Darjeeling Limited hits home for me. I have a similar estranged relationship with my two brothers. I love the way DJL captures their relationship. They're brothers. The love each other, they just can't ever say or show it.
It's funny how everyone's favourite Wes Anderson film in the comments is different, shows how great a filmmaker he is. My favourites by him are Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore and Mr Fantastic Fox & The Grand Budapest Hotel (can't pick one) but all his films are great.
His best film, in my opinion, is The Darjeeling Limited. However, my favorite film by him is Grand Budapest Hotel Also, as always, grand job on the video essay!
My favorite is The Darjeeling Limited. The fact that three dysfunctional brothers came together at the end was so touching. (I also have two younger brothers.) It kind of reminded me of us and how we would be if we travel to India together. The last scene where the three brothers get rid of their dead dad's physical burden (by literally getting rid of the suitcases) was classic.
The best way to describe the look of his films, they look like a delicious cake made by Stanley Kubrick or what Peter Travers said about the Grand Budapest Hotel, "so delicious-looking you may want to lick the screen"...little disturbing...but true.
Grand Budapest hotel is my favorite. Ralph Fiennes as Mr. Gustave was such an inspiration for me to get out of my introverted nature. Isle of Dogs comes second followed by Rushmore.
I have always felt that Rushmore remains the most well-crafted of Anderson's films because it really gets all of these conflicts of age correct. What we gain through loss is expressed so beautifully as Max changes in that film- interacting with his two possible older selves- either the pessimistic Herman Blume (a man who is clearly an "old man" in attitude) and his father- Bert, who is self-sufficient and happy with who he is, unlike Max the boy who doesn't have a clear identity for himself yet.
Darjeeling is my absolute favourite. You raised a point about it, I'd never thought of. It never occurred to me that Alice's pregnancy could be accidental. I was under the impression that Peter agreed, but he only did for Alice, even though he was anxious about it. Then he decided it was too much but it was too late at that point. I figured Alice wanted to, otherwise she could've ended it in the early stages. I don't know, did anyone else think it wasn't accidental? Great analysis, by the way. It's a very interesting video, it even uses different footage than most Wes Anderson analysis videos :D
Most Wes Anderson movies have been great. Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom are one of my favourite movies. The Cinematography and the shots are just amazing.
Definitely, I was thinking of including that, Come Together, Castello Cavalcanti and a few of his other shorts, but thought it would be best to just stick with his feature length stuff!

Repeating myself: awesome as always - and VERY insightful. The first things that draws your attention in a typical Wes Anderson film (obviously) is the look: the often symmetrical frame composition (so much for the rule of thirds ;-) ), the mostly warm, sometimes saturated, color palette and the set design, which is often cozy and in a way often toy-like (I mean that in a very positive way here: as in: made with care and precision) - and the matching music, making them all whimsical (again: I mean that in a positive way). You provide fresh and deep insight into the themes and characters which W. A. movies all have in common. Thanks for sharing your insight and thanks for the inspiration!

There's no doubt that moonrise kingdom is my favourite movie of all time. It's the movie that made me fall in love with Wes Anderson and it's just a warm and welcoming movie in general
My favorite Film has to be moonrise kingdom. Somehow He manages to build such a melancholic atmosphere, makes me care about All the characters, and has this mildly depressing but funny Story as a frame. But Whats even more, he was able to convey perfectly what childhood felt like to me, maybe thats why I love it so much.
My favs are Rushmore and Steve Zissou. Both involve weird father-son type relationships. I've had pretty much the most non-weird father-son relationship with my own dad so I'm not sure why those two movies are my favorites

I absolutely adore Wes Anderson and think Rushmore, in my opinion his best, underrated. However I disagree with your interpretation of Max Fischer. He always enjoyed what he did at the beginning, stating that the key to his constant joviality is due to him doing “what he loves” which is “going to Rushmore”. By the end he becomes less egocentric and matures, he will never truly be able to get the girl or study at Rushmore for the rest of his life.
+Made Cinema - Well I know what you are saying, but technically (and by any definition) it is not B-roll at all because it's a video essay - as opposed to a documentary or feature. B-roll would be supplementary footage to main footage (synonym fallen out of use: A-Roll). NOT giving you a lesson in film here (if I sound in any way condescending: 100% not intended , that's also why I didn't dig deeper into the exact origins of the terms A-roll and B-roll). The footage from feature films here is carefully chosen, as always, to match and compliment the voice over. Again: sorry if I sound nitpicking, but I am not.

I think it has a lot to do with the "Wes Anderson look": no matter what shots you choose, most are so gorgeous and impeccably crafted, they will draw attention to themselves, even if you choose the best and most fitting shots to a voice over. It's funny how everyone's favourite Wes Anderson film in the comments is different, shows how great a filmmaker he is. My favourites by him are Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore and Mr Fantastic Fox & The Grand Budapest Hotel (can't pick one) but all his films are great.

I’ve only seen 1 of Wes Anderson’s films (Moonrise Kingdom) but I love him already. So excited to see Isle of Dogs as well as his other films.
