Hi Mark, hi Ladi - I knew I would like this the moment Mark mentioned it. Ladi is a great guy and I love his fresh perspective. Sad but True was always the one song (together with Enter Sandman) when Metallica embraced the Black Sabbath legacy and integrated it into their music. Before that they were some kids playin' hard, fast and loud - after that they became the continuation of the Metal tradition - another Torch bearer so to speak, the Keepers of the Faith like Priest before them. < at least in my mind.
I love the analysis of the lyrics and I agree on your thoughts. I'm glad James did come out of these dark places... Interesting correlation - is the Black Album somehow for Metallica what the White Album was for the Beatles? Good question - it definitely was a milestone and a turning point - they grew up as artists.
Thanks again for another superb "Rockucation" 🤘😎🤗
    Greetings from Germany,
    Yours Klaus

I'm glad you liked this one Klaus. Ladi had a great time filming it.
And that's a great point about Sabbath. I'd never really thought of that influence on them, but I can totally see it.
And Ladi blew my brain with that comment about the White Album. I'd never once considered it, but now I can't stop thinking about it.

Always thought it was metallicas second take on addiction, when james may have realized that alcohol was begining to become a real problem.
But right now I think it could also be about .... anger.
And only because you talked about St. Anger. 😂
I really enjoy your metallica reactions, I often find a new thought in them.

I think that album is the more appropriately titled Metallica album because it indeed makes me ANGRY! 😂

That's really kind! Thank you! And thanks for commenting!

Both music and timing. To use a grunge example, I love Nirvana. They hit when I was 27, so I could appreciate the music and lyrics. I didn’t feel it in the same way because the teenage years never leave you but it’s not where you are.

BTW, going to be at UT-Austin for a couple of days the last week of April.

Yeah, I knew Ladi was going to ask me that, and it's so hard to answer. I do feel like impact is really determined by the strength of the art and the mindset of the person viewing it, so a lot of this stuff just hit me at the exact right time. I think we talked about this on the Linkin Park stuff, but I was almost a bit too old for some of their stuff. The thing that drew me to them was just how talented they were, but I was almost out of the age for them. But Metallica and grunge came along right when I needed them.

Oh that's rad! Leigh has a conference at the end of April, but hit me up on FB and if I'm around maybe we can have a beer somewhere.

I'm pretty sure it's at the Phoenix convention center. It's a fairly large conference I think.

I agree about St. Anger! It's the one Metallica album I just plain don't like. But I still own it. It literally sounds like Lars is banging on pots and pans, not a drum kit. I'm a big fan of all the other albums, including Load and Reload. And Justice got me into Metallica and it will always be my favorite album.

    • @LikeMindedLunatics

I'm the same way. I own St. Anger, and I've maybe listened to it twice all the way through.
But after seeing "Some Kind Of Monster," I'm firmly of the opinion that album is a success no matter how much we enjoy it for the sole reason they got it made. The album might not be their best (it ain't), but they made it through that tumultuous time and they came out the other side stronger. So in that regard, I'm glad it exists. I think it's possible the band could have broken up at that time, and not only would we not have St. Anger, we wouldn't have Metallica.
      Thanks for watching!

You think there is pain in that song. "Fade to black" hits me harder then this song.
It's not noisy like you say.

I love "Fade to Black." I'll have to let Ladi react to that one, too!
