Great seeing you play this great classic. Must be very fulfilling. I have a keyboard and want to learn to play it like you. How did you get started? Sheet music, an app, by-ear lessons? Awesome, man. Good work!

A friend of mine taught me a few songs, and then I just tried to learn stuff on my own. "All My Life" by Kaci & Jojo was the first song I ever learned. I play by ear, but I can decipher sheet music if I need to. The main thing is practice, practice, practice. Your "ear" for notes will get better the more you play. When I first started playing, I always tried to play things note-for-note, but now I mostly improvise using just the chords. If there are signature notes (usually at the intro) I'll try to replicate, but once a song starts playing with vocals, guitars, drums, etc., I usually just improvise after that. UA-cam tutorials help me a lot, as do chord sheets. When I play with a band I use chord sheets. Getting very familiar with all the chord structures of the minor and major chords is very important. Once you get comfortable with the triads (and inversions of them), you can accompany a song easily by just using a chord sheet. I spend hours upon hours perfecting a song like ^ this one ^, but I can't remember how it goes within a few weeks of not playing it. I play really well on songs, but only on short-term memory, if I need to remember a bunch of songs (like full 3-set band setlist). I'll use chord sheets and write myself little notes for the songs to remember timing, arrangement, special notes, etc. Best of luck to you.
