Hey, Washington D.C. band The Slickee Boys took this to another level back in '78 with Martha Hull on lead vocals.

I regret italians are not interested by the problem of 'who did it first' . The song was written by Mogol an italian pop writer, an englishman called Michael Julien and another englishmen
named Shel Shapiro wgo was a member of the Rokes - a british expatriate band making a career in Italy . The Rokes did two versions of the song , "Piangi con me' issued in 1966 and 'an english version
in 1967 - the one you see . I have no doubt the original is "Piangi con me" ( mogol/shapiro, julien came later for english language releases )

Was this really before The Grass Roots version? I know they sang the song in Italian too.

@@SylentEcho Several months before the Grass Roots' version. The Grass Roots pretty much made a career out of releasing singles that were done by others first, like Lovin' Things (Bobby Rydell), The River Is Wide (the Forum), Midnight Confessions (The Evergreen Blues), Bella Linda (Lucio Battisti) and this one.

That the is "squarest", white-bread, no-soul-having, lead vocal that I've heard in a long time.

I agree, but to his credit he wrote the song. This is also just horrendously produced

This is very nice. I think Rob Grill was a better vocalist, but still I wonder if The Grass Roots didn't record this song if this version might have charted in the US...

The Grass Roots recording sure took this song to a whole other level. By comparison this sounds like a rough demo.

You sure? Just heard your version to compare. Here there is motion inside...the rokes could play.

Reading about the history of this song makes me want to hate the grass roots version but...it really is way better than this lol

Not bad but the Grass Roots version nailed it. The same way Hendrix nailed Bob Dylan's version of All Along the Watchtower.

  • @AGGeiger

This is a weak presentation of the song compared to that of the Grass Roots, who nailed it far better (with help from a lot of top session musicians, to be fair -- some of L.A.'s best players supporting them).

The song was originally released in America by The Livin' Daylights... April '67 iirc. A couple of weeks later that one disappeared from am radio and the GR version got all the airplay. What's interesting is that was the same thing that happened to the Rokes. They were convinced to record their Italian version in English for release in the UK but the Livin' Daylights version was already getting airplay there by the time they recorded it in English. Both were before the GR.

Even though it's the original, compared to the Grass Roots cover, this sounds like a quickie demo....too bad.
