This has been misinterpreted or taken out of context. Pope Francis often speaks about the paradox of the Cross, where something that seems like failure to some people (for example atheists) becomes the foundation of Christian faith and hope.

He's coming of as very sly. I've dealt with manipulative people my whole life (I'm the child of a con-artist) so I'm VERY hypervigilant to the phrasing people use. It may be a case of "lost in translation", but the phrasing the Pope is using is dubious to say the least.
