Can We Make This Athearn 0-4-2 "Little Monster" Steam Loco Run?

- A buddy of mine recently acquired this locomotive from someone he knew and after testing it discovered that it no longer ran. Apparently it was used as part of a Christmas train set for many years although I would imagine it had been sitting for a while based on the condition of the wheels. I wasn't aware Athearn even made steam locomotives however this 0-4-2 is what's known as a "Little Monster" and I would assume is from the 60s or 70s.
nice catch, an Athearn 0-4-2 Vuclain from about 1963... Athearn made an 0-6-0 switcher with tender, this Vuclain and a 4-6-2 Pacific for about 3 years.
The Pacific is really fun; they tried to make it with a Hi-F rubber band drive (I presume in the tender since the axles have fat drums over them) and it could not be made to run very well. So the production ones have a drive similar to this engine, with the motor in the cab and a big die cast main frame. But there's like three versions of the drive, two with plastic drivers, one metal. They kept changing it to try to make it better before giving up. Supposedly the tooling still exists somewhere, they sold it, but it's never been reproduced. It is a fairly accurate model of a Boston & Maine locomotive.
@shaygetz52 I seen one on eBay after you mentioned it . it was a yellow box athearn kit very interesting
@@CR7659 I have pictures of the original Hi-F drive Pacific. It was all contained in the locomotive. It sold on eBay for just north of $3000 about five years ago and came with a letter from the original designer.
I had one of the gear drives with plastic drivers. Nicely designed but a very bad drive that had cracked. I fixed it in a way that would've made Harrison proud before I sold it.
@@shaygetz52are the pic you have the preproduction model or the production model
Yes, I have the pictures of the original preproduction model from the eBay posting. I wish I could post pics here, it's quite the beast....
Great to have met you in person yesterday evening at the Gatineau train club, Harrison. Seeing the Hull, Chelsea, Wakefield train you were running was a real thrill. Too bad our members were preoccupied by our annual general meeting. You will have to return with its steam locomotive, and likewise please bring the little tank engine you just repaired. It's amazing how you can revitalize even the oldest equipment. Regards, Roy.
@@sourabhbhadani4443 why just why
It was great to meet you as well. The steam engine definitely needs to visit the club layout next visit.
It's cool to see this old Athearn steamer. These old Athearn engines don't pop up too often. Also, I like how the motor comes apart, and I learned something new if I needed to service one. Good work!
It looks like an old Mantua-Tyco saddle tanker.
👋
I got my fiberglass pencils and they are awesome!!! Thanks for the info!
Athearn made that based on drawings that ran in Model Railroader, right down to the fictional RR logo on it.
What's funny is there's also a brass version, I forget who imported it but they also made it based on the same drawings. And it has the same logo.
Those side clips are delicate, probably 7 out of 10 of these I see they're broken on at least one side. it's also supposed to have a set of pumps on one side of the smokebox, but they're almost always missing. They're not a bad little engine, other than being state of the art for 1962.
I kinda suspected it was an Athearn after seeing the motor but I wasn't aware Athearn made steam locomotives until now.
Another brilliant repair! Great job Harrison 😎
Super. It's an Athearn, and the locomotive and the logo, N/W, are from drawings in a train magazine. I read the article, but forget the magazines name. (Model Railroader?) I've always wanted to see the inside, to see why it was called a "Little Monster," but it looks like it has a good motor, universals, and a nice gearbox and decent detail. Makes me wonder how long it could have lasted on my railroad, and if I would still own and operate it, or if It would have been one of the candidates for the scrap line. I got the Mantua/Tyco 0-4-0 steam switcher with tender instead, and it still operates quite well after all these years. I started my model railroad in '65, and I still operate with some almost sixty year old models that my parents gave me for Christmas when I was young. Good job saving it, as classics should never end up in the trash. Hello again from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
Thanks again bud👍
No worries man.
That is the cutest "Little Monster" I have ever seen. 😁 Thanks for sharing. 💕😊💕
Nice little loco.
I agree more it reminds of my Lionel ho trains that my dad had when he was young.
My dad said that in electronics, there are only 2 problem types: either there is contact where there is supposed to be NONE, or there is no contact in the spot that SHOULD have contact.
Should help you
You always have to go with Harrison. He knows his stuff. Great video.
Thanks
Another great repair, Harrison. So rewarding to service these ancient and abandoned engines. Fit for lots of future use! 😍
I actually just bought one of those last weekend
Nice
Couldn't believe you actually made a video of this exact locomotive! I got one at a antique shop for 25 bucks in much much worse shape, it was a good first project locomotive and was one heck of a repair. Seeing the inside of this little monster showed me what I was missing in mine, for example I had no idea that the loco originally had a headlight! Instead it had a wire going from the frame to the motor, very odd! Anyways, love the channel and I'm very thankful you made this video! Have a good day!
Glad I could help!
Hi Harrison love the Restoration of Ho scale Model Trains
Another amazing repair! My little brother got this as his first engine but i could never figure out how to get in the motor-Im not very good at servicing locomotives, but this helps me a lot! 😀
It's s saddle tank steam engine. No tender required.
👋
Interesting that somebody seems to have put KD couplers on it.
what an odd locomotive glad you got it to move!
Great restoration mate. It runs pretty well after cleaning and oiling.
Thank you!
That's actually a really cool looking tiny locomotive. I would have thought seeing the screw hole in the front it would be a 2-4-2 or a 2-4-0 . Great restoration serenity!
That little engine resemble a 0-4-2 Forney there's 2 2ft narrow gauge ones at the Waterville and farmagetion railroad and one on display and the Forney museum in Denver colorado
One of my Bachmann 2-8-0s was running and it stopped on a curve and I saw smoke coming from underneath the drivers and turned it off right away luckily I was able to replace the motor and get it working again but then a week later the side rods got messed up while it was running and I’m not sure how to fix it so I was thinking about sending it over to see if you could fix it. Great video by the way. Thanks, Rails Of The East Coast
Huh, I've got a significantly more modern Athern Steamer, though it doesn't see much use, flanging on the wheels of the loco and tender are some of the most shallow I've ever encountered, and it's ability to stay on the rails shows it
Thanks for this, it gives me hope. I have one of these little engines, which sadly needs a lot more work than yours; the nylon or whatever material gear box has seized up with plastic fatigue. I need to replace it somehow - probably have to make a new component, or possibly re-wheel and install new pickups. The plastic / whatever insulating muffs on the axles are a weak point, as they are on Bachman locos. Hope this little fellow has a good new life ahead of it!
I always love when you upload a video
The real railroads used engines like this for switching work or for moving engines around the repair shop
Are you kidding me I just gave away the same locomotive that you just fixed…
And now I regret that
FYI it also needed to be fixed
That's too bad but you never know if it's got a different problem.
I added some Fiberglass pens to my my next Amazon order. Seems to be a good item to have. Now if
Harris will just get some fine point needlenose pliers . LOL
I like little switchers but a 0-4-2 is very beautiful
Very cool! 👍
Have one sitting in a display case. Rare to see a model of a Vulcan other than in brass.
Nice upload today.Thank's for sharing.
Thank you very much for replying to my comment. I have a new video out now. Hope you like and share.
Wow very cool you are very talented at fixing locomotives I could not do that nice video
Thanks
Very nice
This engine is unique locomotive it looks like a Tyco locomotive maybe is or not and happy new Year to you all 🙂
Im waiting when will those locomotives and railcars arrive.
Cool maintenance.
It’s like a front wheelless 4-6-6t
3:10 it almost felt like you broke it
The shell is fine :)
Very cool!
A little tank on the tracks.
I swear I’ve seen this exact locomotive on TikTok!!!
In HO scale?
@@SMTMainline yep i’m pretty sure it was on a flat car which was part of a longer train being pulled by F units I’m pretty sure
I noticed that its an oil burner type and not a coal type. You could put Kadee bronze springs in the coupler pockets to help keep them centered when coupling. How many cars can it pull?
It Looks like a Sattle tank Forney Hirbrid.
The wheels make me think it is a Mantua. And the motor sounds like it too
I'm thinking it's an Athearn based on the motor.
@@SMTMainline once I seen the motor it looked like it
I need a couple saddlebacks for early era rail barge switching. I can’t find any with Dcc sound anywhere…
Nice
Serenity !!!!!
Good job!
It looks like a dock side locomotive.
Santa fe?
I think it's something else
Do you mind my asking what the brush is that you used to clean the commutator?
Can you get a tyco southern 0-8-0 locomotive please
Cool little lump. Good how to service. Would be a great switcher on any yard.🚂🚃🚃🇨🇦
We got a runner
can you do a live stream?
What is that block you are using to clean Wheels
Where do you get your tools to clean and liberate the motors with ?
What was it that you were using to clean the wheels on your little engine?

your engine is an early Athearn product early 60s
That is a saddle tank.
Hello
Hello smt Mainline how are you doing buddy it's old athearn steam locomotive I know I seen it on eBay years ago
I'm well, how are you?

Hi Harrison I live in England and I have just bought an American loco and I need some help in identifying it if I send some photos could you please help me thanks mate Brian
Fact: rivarossi started producing trains in 1945
I have a old Athearn 4-6-2 loco it’s old and it’s motor is completely dead or something else is wrong with it. the number 826 on its tender.
You could probably find a motor replacement on eBay or at a train show.
@@SMTMainline i found three also after watching the vid i used a little brush to clean the dust off of sleeping beauty. i can now say shes less dusty. thank you for showing me how to dust model trains
Would u recommend getting one
If you want one and you can find one cheap.
