Bjorn mentions his cousin. He was sitting at the table next to me with his wife at the after party for the Grand Opening Gala Premiere night of ABBA Voyage at which I also bumped into Benny and got some great photos with him. Umforgettable. Especially for a kidney transplant patient.
ABBA was the first real pop group b(r)and. Yes, there were The Beatles before, and Fleetwood Mac and so many others, but they were more than four, and not so striking looking couples. ABBA was the perfect picture book couple times two, that everyone could relate to, somehow. The posters, the merchandise, the music, the records, the tours, everything was so perfectly branded for such an early musical product in the 70ies and early 80ies. It was the beginning of commercial saturation and the many marketing tools available at the time. I would call it a text book example of mass marketing, promo & advertising securing premium revenues: An amazing product, essentially as reliable as Volvo with the kudos of a Mercedes-Benz.
Interesting. I think you're on to something there. Benny says in some interview about the Australian tour "ABBA was everywhere. I don't know how that happened". Haha, coming from a northern "socialist republic" ( Sweden is actually one of the oldest monarchies in the world). You have to give it to Stikkan Andersson, their manager, who really made them in the first place. Merchandising was only one of his sideshows and this was pioneering stuff. I don't buy into that Benny and the others were so unaware of this going on and had no say at all. In my book this doesn't diminsh them - far from it! As well as musicians from heaven they are all very skilled and before their time in marketing, with integrity, mind you!
Yeah, it is interesting. I reacted too. I am sure both mean what they say, but from different perspectives. I mean im not the same person from 20, 12 or even 2 years ago. And Benny has talked about getting out of the ABBA ' bubble' etc. So my guess is he perhaps talks about spending those endless hours at his piano, since he was 12.
Apples & Oranges. ABBA were perfectionists, especially vocally but If you strip everything back from any Beatles songs until you've just got the raw vocals, they sounded terrible.

According to my knowledge, Bjørn met Lena one week after he and Agnetha decided to go their separate ways. They infact met at a party at Frida's. Frida says so herself in an interview with Swedish television. The ten year jubilee.
@@David_Newton You may be correct but in my experience, there is never a divorce without another person involved. People say they grew apart and all that nonsense but they lie about having someone else because they want to seem wonderful. Either way, it is a sad the marriage went badly and ended. I hope you are right about Bjorn.
Agnetha walked out on Bjorn, on a Christmas eve. On the new year eve party Bjorn met Lena. Lena looks so much like Agnetha that Bjorn was possibly on the rebound. But that marriage is still going

Queen? Please. I can think of dozens of bands before I get to Queen. The Beatles had a vastly larger amount of material than ABBA ever had.
