IMPROVE Your LIFE and Get 1% Better Every Day w/ James Clear

- Whether you realize it or not, most of the THOUGHTS and ACTIONS you take daily are based on HABITS you’ve developed over time.
Your brain is wired to CONSERVE ENERGY whenever possible, and one of the ways it does this is by falling back to what it already knows.
AND WHAT YOUR BRAIN KNOWS ARE HABITS.
For the past 10 years, JAMES CLEAR has sought the answer to a single question we’ve all asked at one time or another…HOW CAN WE LIVE BETTER? As you’ll discover, much of the answer lies in our HABITS.
In fact, through his ongoing research, James has become a groundbreaking EXPERT this subject.
His book, ATOMIC HABITS, has sold more than 5 MILLION COPIES worldwide and been translated into more than 50 LANGUAGES.
Developing the right habits is an ESSENTIAL BUILDING BLOCK of my success and something I still work on daily, so I was pumped up for this week’s episode.
You will be, too.
Like any other way to improve your life, there’s a right way to develop good habits, and James lays out a detailed 4-STEP STRATEGY for doing so.
From my experience, I’ve learned you don’t need to make massive changes in your habits. Often you just need to change ONE MORE HABIT to propel you to new and much higher levels of success. When you stack up small improvements by executing the right habits, you create a COMPOUNDING EFFECT that produces tremendous results.
We also get into how your habits are affected by your physical and social environments, James’ 4 Laws of Behavior Change, and why “NO” is the ultimate productivity hack. Let’s face it, saying NO is a problem we often struggle with (including me!), so this is a part of our exchange you’ll really want to FOCUS on.
If you have problems breaking bad habits, lack the motivation to change your habits, or struggle with life in general, it’s time to hear what James has to say so you can change your habits and start CHANGING YOUR LIFE.
0:00 Intro
2:07 How can habits make us 1% better every day?
6:48 The math behind getting 37.78 times better
8:41 What are identity-based habits?
12:43 Establish a habit before improving it
16:37 What really is a habit & how to create one?
20:06 The 4 laws of behavior change
26:30 How physical & social environment affects habits
34:02 How James manages his phone usage
37:09 How to use social media to your benefit
40:15 Saying "No" is the ultimate productivity hack

What habits are you working on in 2022?
Reading 📚 everyday!
Growth mindset!! Practice makes permanent
Taking a walk everyday for minimum of 10 minutes
Reading, being, loving....now!!
Back to healthy eating and working out regularly!
I am in the process of reinventing myself after many years of drug and alcohol addiction. I have been searching for a way to “reset” my mind and to let go of the past. I believe I have just found my new path and I will be reading atomic habits and listening to Ed from here on out. Thank you so much for having MR Clear on the podcast and sharing the word!!
You GOT THIS!
Good luck and may God bless u.
I watched one of the Tim Grover interviews and became obsessed with Ed's videos. Watch them all. He has great guests and it helps keep me going. You got this, brother!
You can do it stay focused on the better version of yourself and you overcome. Wish you the best
You got this brother!! What’s the update bro? You hanging in there?
I appreciate how complimentary Ed is to James. No holding back, just full of positive comments. We need more people like him!
“Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.” That's a good quote from his book, which goes great with the meditation workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Stress by Harper Daniels.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Every action you take is like a "Vote" for the type of person you want to become . - James Clear ." This show just gets better and better !!!
Perfect quote from today's episode brother
solid gold
Exactly!!
This was excellent statement!
Fantastic concept
When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small.
-James Clear. Ed always has the best guests on his show!
Perfect takeaway brother
Love
Surprising 2 me... I've been doing this everyday.. I'll say what is the furthist thing can be. Like a tool? Like anything... If all is already one. Or this uni. Verse... Don't go nuts.... Making work pay( play)... Look forwàrd 2 book.... Great guy... My peer group! My tribe....
Watching this interview daily and always learn new things. This guy is a genius.
Beautiful person reading this, work harder on you than you do anything else and you’ll be unusually successful! ⭐️
I believe in you! ❤️- Nat
This interview is really good to listen to before i start ur day. Thanks
Love the idea that too much planning is just procrastination. I definitely see that in me and my dreams, I want to start doing more instead of planning more, because nothing happens perfectly as you plan it anyway. That's called life. Thanks Ed!
For me, I get that perfection for just few days, then if I find that I was not perfect in just one day in that row... it messes me up... I stop what I was doing take a break and promise myself I will start again... its the perfectioninst in me causing me to procrastinate before I get back to what I planned to do.
This guy know how to use words to impress his ideas without making you feel bored.
I am reading his book atomic habits and i have to say it's very informative and very well written that it makes you want to complete it to the end, despite the fact that reading wasn't actually the type thing that i would have fun doing it.
"Habits reinforce your desired identity". So many quotable truth bombs in this talk. Fantastic!
Most people want actionable information to grow and deepen their lives and work, but grounded in values, principles, and philosophy. This is the sweet spot.
Couldn't agree more!
Ok, Ed. I had a dream last night about a group of people who met. At the end of a period of time, a cycle, they were asked: “How.did you become more you?” This is the question of my personal development now.
I never heard of James until I think 2019. I was in Prince Rupert, BC, Canada commercial crab fishing and I stumbled across his book in a for sale rack in Walmart. Was probably one of the best buys I have ever had. Great book and James's news letter is awesome as well.
Thanks for having him on Ed, I love this episode.
Glad this interview reached you brother!
What an amazing conversation!!! The gems in this talk are literally life changing!!!
That ONE sentence hit me like a ton of bricks: "When making plans think big, when making progress think small "
Realisation right there.
Me too
I think I’ve watched this video at least 5 times and I pick up something new each time, incredible interview! I’ll continue to share
Literally life changing! Amazing - thank you. Off to buy the book!
First time watching show, EVERY SINGLE THING THAT I HEARD TODAY I WAS TAKING NOTES. I have listen to this every morning fir 2 weeks. I found most amazing, as I have unknowingly fallen into that habit of being the person who writes a list to write a list, that must do research and read books and videos before being proactive and jumping in, finding what FEW GOALS I WANT TO MOST SUCEED IN, and put all my effort into that rather than a “BrainDump” of ideas I seem to always be rewriting and reorganizing daily… all while my cortisol levels are rising, my productivity is almost nonexistent and I can’t figure out why?🧐 I’ve done all the work right??
Loved the show, it not only introduced me to your show, but I have read atomic had it twice and I am a huge fan. However I love how you dissected the book and it made it much more understandable and honestly that’s why I have woken up to it for the last two weeks because it is a motivational tool. Thank you and I am definitely a new fan and will spread the word!!
This interview can live in anytime and still hit folks with conviction. Thank you both for sharing your gifts with the world.
All I can say is WOW!! this just lifted me up and got me motivated to better myself. Starting at 1 % every day is so true, Thank you so much for this uplifting message.
Absolutely loved this interview with James Clear. Agree with Ed that Atomic Habits, if applied, is life-changing. His behavioral laws are so on point. Today, marks 440 consecutive days of exceeding 11,000 steps daily. This is my gateway behavior that has lead to so many other positive habits. For 2022, I’ve set my sights on reduced coffee consumption. Today is day five of only one cup per day. I moved my coffee pot to downstairs and only have the small Kuerig in the kitchen.
This has been the best conservation I have heard in a really long time. Thank you both of you, very much appreciated
The amount of attention you gave to the future needs of the industry was very educational and persuasive! One of a kind!
Just found you this am. WOW! Just what I needed. I'm 51 and feel like I'm just starting. 2022 is my year! I was born on the 22nd so..like I've got to get things together this year... I can't wait to experience the journey this year with our business and making some hard choices to walk away from. This show was amazing!!! Sharing to a few groups and individuals I believe would embrace this! Thank you for providing amazing perspectives, being blunt without being judgmental!
Great interview Ed! Bought Atomic Habits earlier this year- have been meaning to re-read it. You having James on your podcast was amazing and encouraging to stay consistent with the trajectory of my habits. 2021 Has been a great year and 2022 will be absolutely amazing so long as we can improve 1% every day .👍
Read the book a month ago. Was enlightening to hear James thoughts out loud. Thank you for this interview. 🎉
I have to say..this video randomly popped up on my feed and I am SO glad it did. It just made my entire day. I listened to Atomic Habits about 6 months ago. I really enjoyed it and watching this interview was so much fun! It was really cool to see how much James Clear inspires you. There is a strong respect for him and his work and it shows so much! I love it. Good work, both of you! I love watching these kind of positive vibe videos!!:)
Thank you so much for this value-loaded show! I've read the book a while ago so this was like the best possible "refresher" / deep dive on it! I'm definitely gonna re-read a couple of chapters!
Was literally just researching Mr. Clear yesterday and then Ed post this interview! Perfect timings, thank you Ed and James!
Glad this reached you!
Took me almost two weeks to view this interview but as someone who has read both books from both speakers, I can say this is the most practical advice you will get in your entire life.
I appreciate Ed and James for their contribution to the book. I recently purchased the book and came across an insightful interview where Ed discusses James' perspective.
This has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the book. I particularly admire James' advice on approaching plans with a big vision, while focusing on small processes. His words made me realize the mistakes I've been making recently.
Therefore, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to both of them.
Another amazing show! Like Ed I’ve had this book recommended to me so many times and I kind of put it off because “I’m already good at this” but I learned a ton. Can’t wait to read the book!
This is one of the best interviews I have ever listened to. So simple and parenting advice, wow! So good. Thanks Ed and Megyn.
Hello Ed, thank you very much for having James Clear on the show. I am also a Laguna Beach resident, entreprenuer, and would love the opportunity to meet you sometime. I have spent a lot of time in Three Arch Bay and run all the time at Strand Beach. God Bless you brother.
First time I watched you on UA-cam. Awesome interview. I am implementing some of these ideas right away. Love the one with just the one app on the first page of your phone as well as the idea of leaving your phone in another room. It is so true as well about our environment. If I buy cookies, I eat them and then beat myself up for why did I even buy them! Loved this interview. By the way, a great thing I heard that I use when I work out is "Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done" and it keeps me going every time.
Two of my favorite guys on the same show. The work that both of you do is brilliant and life-changing. I use these concepts regularly in my coaching. Thanks and blessings 👊🏾🚀
Wow! Fantastic! This convo was first rate! My husband doesn’t need the book but I do. Holiday gift to myself…Thank you, Ed, for connecting with James Clear.
"Habits reinforce your desired identity." Awesome thanks!
I absolutely love James Clear, and I am so glad you interviewed him! His content is so useful. Because of him, one thing that I do every day is study Spanish. I have long hair, so while I am drying my hair, I have my Spanish book next to my hairdryer which is a que for me to study. Thank you, Ed, for another amazing interview!! I appreciate you. 🤓😃
I have seen James Clear interviewed by several different people covering mostly the same basics using the interviewer as the guide... but I have to give props to this host....his sincere and emphatic expression of admiration and gratefulness to Mr. Clear was refreshing and represented my own... so thank you.
Powerful stuff. Who you follow on social media, you choosing your future thoughts. Make sure you consume better
I just moved all my apps, and audible is now the only app on my main screen. I’m easily distracted so I know this is going to make a difference for me. Just downloaded the book. Awesome info … thank you Ed & James.
This is great!! "Structuring the environment for success".
One of my experiences is when I am out shopping and I look at other peoples' shopping carts to see what they are buying then look at that person's physical condition. As expected most folks who appear to be out of shape, or unhealthy load their carts with high carbs, sugary, processed, unhealthy foods. This is always a learning experience.
I started listening to your show a few months ago after listening to Terri Savelle and I have to say I love you! I love your shows and your back story and all your achievements and your such an inspiration for greatness!
Great show today Ed. I find the book hard to read so having James speak on it is sooo helpful.
TIME TO GET BACK INTO WORK NOW !!!
...
It's never too late !!!
...
And Ed has given me personal encouragement !!!
...
MANY THANKS ED !!!
Pleasure's always mine!
So good! Started getting James Clear's newsletters 10 years ago but didn't apply the knowledge. Bought his book, Atomic Habits and listened on Audible. Now it's time to apply! I Started making my bed every day, putting healthy stuff on the counter and walking 4-5 times a day. But there are still areas where lack of discipline related to my ADHD has kept me from moving into all that God has for me. Good reminders here!!! Thanks, Ed.
Glad this reached you today... what was your biggest takeaway?
This was amazing! Thank you so much for all you do. It’s changing my life!
The philosophy of experimentation...thank you James
Excellent! Thank you for breaking all of this down for me! Listened to the book once, and it was overload. Now I have pieces to go execute on pronto. Gratitude!👍💪🏼
This is the best podcast I have watched ever. You two are awesome together. Thank you I am really struggling with some things
One of the best interviews I have ever watched. Outstanding on so many levels. Life Changing Information, Powerful Stuff. Thanks Ed Mylett. Thanks James Clear.
Love James Clear!!! His book was incredible
First time listening in, choose it because of James Clear, interested in hearing more guest speakers, and helped me with mindset. Listened during my morning exercises!!
Thank you, I appreciate your show, the guest you have on and the quality of the questions you ask. I’m Growing by leaps and bounds and lovin it!
love love love this thank you!
I completely agree with you, Ed! I first stumbled upon James Clear while watching an interview on London Real. I was completely hooked by what he was saying. I have read his book and always feel like re-reading, watching more of his interviews, discussions, etc. The solutions to a lot of our daily problems lie in his research findings because they are not some fanciful stuff but real workable examples that people inherently know about but overlook or underestimate their importance. 'Atomic Habits' is a reminder of how to sort it out by implementing in our daily lives. The challenge is not to lose focus. Great interview. Truly loved it and I can see how it resonated with you as well.
Wow you got James Clear,!
Thanks you Mr. Mylett.
great content! My habits for 2022 are 1)getting fitter/working out 5 times a week; 2) reading about personal finances every week/a book per month;
This is a follow up almost 2 years later, how did it go?
Great interview with James Clear! First time listening to you Ed... great questions, great energy, great focus! Thank you!!!
Loved this! I will be listening to this again and again. Thank you both! 👊👍
His story IS AHMAZING OMGOSH, thanks for interviewing him, I just started the book
An incredibly insightful compilation of a wide variety of concepts (do 1 more - Ed Mylet, 10k hours of practice to be an expert - Malcolm Gladwell, The ONE Thing - Keller & Papasan, small attainable progress - David Goggins, etc...) put into an easy to understand and apply framework! This is a great book!
James, such a classy intelligence. Massive action is not realistic. 1 percent progress can build. Thank you!
Soo Good! Thank you Ed! Thank you James! The habit I am working on is not allowing distractions! !% every day!
Stay persistent... you've got this
SO good!!! So many eye openers. I've subscrbed to your newsletter. Thank you Ed, thank you James!!
This is a great book. Rewire yourself through daily choices and decisions. Thank you for this collaboration
Always! Glad you got some takeaways from today
6:25 "..Focus on the trajectory rather than position . . . because if you are on a good trajectory, all you need is time.... Good habits, time becomes your ally. You just need to let time work for you - but if you have bad habits, time becomes your enemy" There are some people you can listen to over and over again and it's so exciting, you get ahas, even a different aha moment every time. James Clear is one of those people and so are you Ed. Wow. This is Massive Action Meets Get 1 percent better. 🎉
So many good thoughts! I completely relate to resetting with a workout. Glad to see I'm in good company!
Thank you!!!

Amazing talk. Thank you both so much!
Such a good listen every time I feel like I am not being consistent and breaking, I come back to this to set me straight. In terms of fitness and work
Listening to this tomorrow, it's going to be great!!
I loved all of the examples in this interview; small habits can have a massive impact if you give it time and stay consistent
Kaizen is the process of small continuous change, been around since WWII and resurfaced in Dr. Robert Maurer’s book One Small Step Change Your Life, must read if you want the psychological background. Idea of 1% gain was introduced by motivational speaker Brian Tracy some 15-20 years ago. In the words of John Lennon, ‘It’s all rehash.’ Admittedly, Atomic Habits is still a great
read.
Truly life changing, thank yous!
THE BEST interview in 2021! WOW so much fricking applicable knowledge and hacks!!!!
What a coinscidence!! My business group is currently reading this book and this vid hammers the entire read home. Great Great great questions Coach Ed thank you for this. Grateful!!!

SO GOOD! Getting the book. Thank you 🙏
I'm 18 minutes in, and I just barely heard this concept of "one more" for the first time- and I just practiced it too, for the first time😄. I did one more minute of walking on my treadmill, as I listened to this very encouraging video!
I look forward to the book The Power of One More!
literally the BEST interview I’ve heard in ages-sharing right away!!
I've read this book a couple of times! Great stuff.
James book really helped me in my tough situation where I didn't know how to handle with many failures that came across. Habits can work for us or against us--Simple and eye opening. Anyway, hats off to this guy ! Thanks a lot !
