HEY GUYS!!!! FINALLY, we're hitting the "BAD BOYS" of window treatments...be sure to let me know if you agree down below in the comments! And If you want to know more about the club, be sure to get on the waiting list at www.thedezignclub.com.....YAY!!!!
Lisa.... I think by looking at all the comments including mine, you may want to rethink shutters lol! Thank you for replying to me that was very sweet. Yes shutters here in Florida are a must have. I got the bifold so I can open them up all the way flush to my wall if I want more sun. I really do enjoy your channel and look forward to seeing other installations.
Just found this series, super helpful and I love your energy! I'm not sure if it was touched on much, but what's best for a weird shaped window that balances both style and function? I've got a wide (8ft) short (3-ish ft) window in the bedroom, bed placed beneath it, positioned higher up on a north-face wall (the room is half-underground) and I think thermal drapes might be the way to go (super cold room all the time, brr!) but I don't know that a window that wide would look good with that style of treatment. If you don't mind me asking, what would you recommend?
Location, location, location! If your house is set in a sun drenched setting, shutters are right on. Sorry, LH, great topic but you are way off on this one. I grew up in a house with horizontal blinds everywhere. Never want to see them again, not even in the tiniest bathroom window. Yuck, yuck, yuck!
Totally agree . People think they are timeless. A lot of people in Europe still have them. Depends on what style you are going for. If you are changing your style . Then might want to change .
There are many people out in this world who can decide for themselves what style they enjoy and works best for their home. Not everyone shares the same taste in interior design. This "designer" is clearly catering to those who strive to be trendier than their trendy neighbors. Another 5 or ten years from now she'll put out a video praising the "vintage vibe of verticle blinds".
I love my shutters ! We changed from faux wood 2" blinds to shutters for the simple reason that our two large bedroom windows face the street. I had the shutters made with a horizontal divider bar where the divider in our double-hung windows were. Now we can have the top part of the shutter open for natural light and no one can see in. With the 2" faux woods we had to have them closed most of the time for privacy.
Hi Lisa, I can agree with almost everything 😙 However I cannot agree with you when it comes to shutters and beach houses. I think they fit perfectly together.
The shutters examples used in this video are very outdated! Shutters nowadays are customized for your windows and doors and are now available in larger louver sizes without divider rails as shown in this video. She shows awful old shutters instead of the beautiful customized shutters available now. Perhaps because as a so called designer she has no experience with shutters that she has to advise her clients to settle with faux wood blinds. Even the blinds she presented have huge route holes and are ugly.
I agree. Here in palm beach, fl the mansions by the water have them and they make for a beautiful coastal style home. Plus they are really expensive and they do look good for particular decor style . I hate blinds. They make for cheap look. Partially sheer linen Curtains Or smart roll panels over everything else
When we renovated our farmhouse and put shutters on all the windows. A big improvement over blinds and curtains. It is clean and simple. It has large slates that look great. They're so easy to clean.
Yes, it went from a 1950s house complete with gold shaggy carpet ! Luxury vinyl plank throughout the house and tile in the kitchen and bath. Huge improvement !
Just broke the bank on my new shutters! Love them. Southern CA house . Easy to clean and adds a cool look from outside and inside. I replaced the wood 11/2 wood blinds . Best thing I have done window wise. Totally agree on mini blinds and the awful verticals! To me , vertical blinds can bring down any room!
The house has very Traditional bones. Have shutters in my dining room and in master bathroom on tub deck windows. Sun in the dining room and privacy in a hard to access tub area were the drivers. Will consider wood blinds for other rooms. I have HD Clearview blinds with Two inch veins in living room and kitchen at Designers suggestion. They are ok but don’t love them. Not truly clear view. Not working with that designer anymore.
Our shutters are being installed today. I can't imagine this being a bad thing. El Paso, Texas...everyone here seems to have them and we just moved here and had to invest in them because of the heat. I think it's a great look.
@@johnonethree I'm a Realtor, and I love them! Most folks think of them as a big bonus when they are buying a home, but I'm in SC, so maybe it's a regional thing? 🤔
@@leec5170They aren’t cheap to be sure. I feel closed in with them. You can’t completely have an open feeling. Just a personal claustrophobia thing I guess.
I lived in a rental apartment with Venetian blinds for 35 years. If I never see another slat again, I’ll be a happy woman! Looking forward to Dezign Club’s debut!
I have been selling custom window treatments for the last 9 years and I love watching this videos because she is so right! Only thing I would say is about the shutters. You are correct about them not being a perfect solution for everyone. But there are so many ways to make them more modern and transitional! You can actually get panels up to 48" wide and slats up to 4.5". That way you dont cut out any more light than a faux wood blind. Plus, you can get so many fun design inspired colors! In my opinion, don't knock shutters until you see them! Love watching these videos as so many don't think about how window treatments really effect how a whole room comes together!
Ethan!!! Thank you so much for sharing this - that is so cool that you do custom window treatments!!! I totally hear you guys, you don't wanna let those shutters go!!! 😆 You can definitely keep those shutters if you have certain design styles like Victorian, but I love your creativity behind any other style!!! 👏🏼💞
Lida!! Shutters can be pretty dark and bulky - not a big fan!!! 🙈 I’m always looking out for you guys and recommending these treatments as best as I can - giving you light into your home while having privacy!! 🌟🏠 Of course there are exceptions on the shutters depending on your location, design style, etc. This is just my general opinion and alternatives for window treatments!! 😘💖💖💖
@@LisaHoltDesign As always, I appreciate all your advice. Plantation shutters are still huge in the Keys of FL, possibly because of hurricanes coming that way often. 😉
Sorry Lisa, I’m on team “ plantation shutters” .. just bought them and I love them😍 .. easy to clean, helps decrease the heat that comes in through the windows and I can easily control the light I want in my house ( which is extremely bright) plus, I can still have a lovely view outside 😎..Lastly, curtains can be beautiful, but they are expensive and need to be cleaned (also costly) often, because they are dust catchers and “Dust” is my enemy😏..
I'm glad that these work for you Tammy!!! These treatments can totally depend on certain locations and circumstances - this is just my general opinion for each treatment that I see hasn't worked the best!! 👏🏼 Thank you so much for this kind of feedback, I LOVE hearing what works best for your home!! 😇
I have shutters in my beach house and I love them . They do let a significant amount of light in and can close when needed . They are easy to keep clean and are on trend with my coastal community .
In so many of the beautiful old Nantucket houses downtown, they have the classic shutters (much smaller than the plantation shutters) as window treatments. They look stunning, almost a part of the architecture. I've also seen them work perfectly on San Francisco victorians.
R T!!! YES!! Of course there are exceptions on the shutters depending on your location, design style, etc. This is just my general opinion and alternatives for window treatments!! 🤗💕
I thought the macrame was cute too. Not in all homes, and mine is too traditional (2” blinds and drapery all the way for me) but with a bohemian decor I can see them working.
Love shutters! So many stunning romantic window looks were shutters: Edwardian, Plantation, Out of Africa, Indian Palaces, Australian Ranch houses, Silke's beach house, on and on.....I have always wanted traditional shutters and finally, in this house, I have appropriate size windows. They cut ou light, you say?? Just open them up!
@@dianebaum5194 Nothing beats the sound of slaves screaming in agony as they get clubbed to death, when getting your first brew of coffee in the morning. So romantic.
Those 2" faux wood blinds you recommend are all over the house we just bought. Yeah, they may look good, but none of my kids can open up the blinds in their rooms, and even I have trouble opening them up. They are VERY heavy to manage, and we end up just keeping them down. Not to mention that the cords pose choking hazards for children! In our previous home, we bough custom honeycomb cordless blinds that you can pull up from the bottom and/or pull down from the top. So easy to use and I never had to worry about the kids. We'll be eventually replacing all the faux wood ones to the cordless honeycomb style.
The old corded blinds really are a danger, it's no exaggeration. I had a dopey cat that somehow became badly tangled in a cord & nearly died, strangled. Luckily I was home to rescue him. Afterwards I cut the cord into two separate pieces & the length in half, so it wouldn't happen again. Couldn't imagine a toddler ending up in the same situation but hear it does happen sometimes. Crazy...
Wood blinds are not beautiful to me, and I am also concerned with the strangulation hazard. I also put cordless honeycomb in every window in my last house, along with curtains. The privacy was great, along with the extra insulation. I would do it again if I needed more privacy.
The newest wrinkle in 2" faux wood blinds is that they have no cords. You push them up to the height you want and pull them down at night. A simple rod opens or closes the blinds themselves.
I liked the macrame. I’m having new window treatments in my bedroom. My designer and I chose light tan fabric pull down shades with a scalloped cornice board in a beautiful jacquard fabric.
my grandmother back in the 50'd called the wide blinds with the cloth lifters Venetian blinds. Everything old is new again. Forget what's in or out. Go with what you personally like.
I love shutters and here in Oz where we have harsh sunlight they are perfect as you can slant them for either full or partial light depending on the time of day. I think they look timeless.
Also, I love the look of shutters if they're done right (on the inside of the window frame). I had them in the last house and almost put them in my new build as they just impart cottage style, coziness and bring a bit of texture to an otherwise boring window.
I have had every blind known to woman kind and they all eventually broke in some manner. After years of frustration we put in shutters. They look wonderful. Many compliments on them from teens to seniors. I love you Lisa and you are a superb designer but I must disagree on shutters.
I totally hear you on this Cheryl, you guys are veryyy passionate about these shutters!! 😆 I am glad that they work well for you - Of course, there are exceptions on the shutters depending on your location, design style, etc. This is just my general opinion and alternatives for window treatments!! 🤗💓
Thank you for your opinion on shutters!! Waffling between blinds and shutters, but you are right. They are very '90s. Hadn't thought about it, until you said it outloud. But to each his own. 🙂
I enjoy your videos, however...today, the no shutters? Having a hard time with this. Plantation shutters, sort of up there with ceiling fans in the deep south. I'm going to have to think about them...seem a very old traditional look. Savanna's old homes, Charleston, etc., just seem so lovely with them.
I love old hurricane shutters that lift up and serve as awnings outside windows that are made of heavy wood. Before storms we just lower the awnings and they become window protection.
@@GoodandDelicious I looked it up and see them called Bahama, Bermuda or Hurricane shutters. There's a good Lowes UA-cam about making nice heavy ones with hydraulic lifts made out of 2x4s and 1x6s. You can plant delicate flowers under your windows because when these shutters are up in the awning position they make the rain fall more gently on the area underneath as well as shade them from the tropical sun.
I have had custom mini blinds In my house for years They have never looked like what u show ( a mess) I like having control with sun n night closing. Also I like all my front windows looking the same . I also like shutters I don’t go by what other people say is in or out.
Denny!!! YAY, I am so glad that your blinds didn't look like what I showed - that would be a disaster!!! 🤣 That's awesome that you like to go your own path and choose what YOU like!!! I am just here to share my opinions and experiences with these tips, I'm kind of like a guide to design!!! 😝💖
For the first time I totally disagree with you with Shutters. I live in a area of the US that gets very hot. I can control the light better with my 2 1/2 plantation shutters in the bay window. Instead of total darkness to keep the sun from damaging the floors and furniture, I still get some light coming through. As you have stated before mixing decor is personal as long as it is cohesive. I do have the wooden blinds in the kitchen nook and master with a valance and curtains in that room. In the front the shutters and other windows are the white wooden clad blinds. As always I love all of your advise and have even shopped in your recommended web sites and your energy just inspires me to no end.
Claire!! These treatments can totally depend on certain locations and circumstances - this is just my general opinion for each treatment that I see hasn't worked the best!! 🙌🏼
I was thinking of getting shutters for a bathroom window as I can’t stand all the flapping around and movement of a slatted blind when I clean it. Feel fixed shutters will be better to clean.
I do agree that the biggest con to the shutter is the loss of window surface area. But I have to say, they have always had that nice white, clean, finished look on the window. I’ve been considering zebra blinds for my home since shutters are way more than I want to spend at the moment.
I HAVE TO do the vertical blinds over my sliding glass doors in my kitchen and family room. We get too much morning sun, but need something in the kitchen to come in and out of the deck area. Drapes are just not feasible (full length in the kitchen? Yuck!!!) And since it's accessible, my husband insists on something that can be closed when we're not at home. I thought maybe privacy film but we all like to actually look out those doors as we're sitting there....Did I also mention our ceilings are only 7½ foot high and the doors, are 6½ high? Yeah, so no room for deep headers! The only solution seems to be the verticals
Yep, i hear you, I'm the same, I've got a sliding glass door plus floor-to-ceiling window onto my breakfast balcony, and I'd be lost without my verticals. Do Panel Track Blinds appeal to you? I agree with many of the commenters that plantation shutters, as the most expensive custom window treatment of all, look super high end - but when you open the shutter frames in and to the sides (which for full length doors means to concertina-fold a sequence of shutters -- to see the view, they do take up a lot of extra room --which you have to allow for (I don't have the room). I may end up checking out the new colours and fabrics for verticals, given that as I've discovered, it's quite simple to lift existing vertical panels off their hooks and pop on new ones.
@@a24-45 panel track blinds are a really good option for some situations. My house is a traditional/contemporary blend and I feel like that solution might not work with our aesthetic. Luckily, they are similar to the wall color and kind of blend in, rather than match the trim
I've had every window treatment you mentioned at one time or another. I currently have plantation shutters throughout my house.....I love, love them! They're so beautiful in my traditional home and so easy to clean!
We have a living room sliding door overlooking our pool deck that faces west and opens from the right only. Right now we have vertical blinds that can draw to the left. We want to see our deck and pool during the day, be able to semi-block the blaring western sun in the late afternoon, and have privacy at night. Vertical blinds seem to be the only solution as they can direct the light, be completely open, or completely closed…..but they are so ugly! What can we replace them with that will still manage to do all of those things??
We don’t have the blazing sun issue on the Eastern side of the lounge room where our sliding doors are but a lot of heat, both heat coming in and heat escaping in winter. We have heavy drapes that work and it’s very private so we can keep them open. Have you looked st roller blinds? There are lovely solutions, ones that you can see through slightly but giving privacy. They stop the heat. You can raise them or have them at any height. I think that’s what we will do when we replace our heavy curtains and as well as the roller blinds we can have light curtains to add softness to the room.
Same, slider faces our beautiful backyard and remain open most of the day but at night they are closed for privacy :) Mine are clean and new but still vertical??? UGH! Now what??? @LisaHoltDesign HELP US! xo
Susan Rabideau: I have had 4.5 inch Plantation Shutters on my two sliding doors for 20 years. Great light and heat control. They are on tracks and are easy to use and clean. Pintrest gives several examples. Mine have a beautiful frame around them and slide back and forth as needed. Plantation shutters are expensive but well worth the investment in my opinion. After all, I've enjoyed mine for over 20 years.
I have had every type of window covering including the blinds with the fabric tape but THIS new house is just roller shades and 4.5 inch shutters with hidden tilt. It might be over, but I do not care. I love them and they control, not block light. You can have the top have tilt separate from the bottom and change the lighting better throughout the day. They are much easier to clean than blinds because there are fewer slats. I hope they last forever. Regardless, Linda you are one of my favorite designers. After seeing all the comments shutters are safe for now!
I love that macrame thing! for a small window it can look really pretty. Your style is so far from boho of course I get you don't like them and would not look good in every house or in more than 1 window!
If I lived in an underground cave sitting on a dirt floor, I would still watch your videos for advice and pure entertainment. I love your energy, style and expertise...especially in the ways you share them.
I remember the 1 1/2 or 2 inch blinds from decades ago. I remember having the chore of cleaning them. I remember how often they would rise unevenly so the bottom would be askew, once that happened it was a pain to get them straight. Shutters are a much better investment.
I loved this! The gypsy in me still likes a quality macrame in a window of a small room in which privacy and cutting light is not an issue as long as it goes with the rest of your style. A neat little boho nook might be able to sport the macrame. A shout out to my Mom who made macrame when I was a kid and created the warm fuzzies I associate with it, lol.
I agree with most of the window furnishings except for the Shutters, I have them throughout my home and absolutely Love them, Easy to clean and they give enough lighting inside our home plus the privacy at night, plus I don’t have to keep on replacing them like I did when I had curtains, no curtains hanging on the floor when your vacuuming and mopping, all clean lines throughout. Cheers from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺💕💕
@@ivanrodriguez268 I get plenty of light in with my Shutters without the neighbours prying eyes looking into my home, we get a lot of foot traffic in my street and I like my privacy.
@@vezzamens5011 I think because a lot of us Aussies love the Hamptons style and are redesigning their homes that way, I’m in a Hamptons style group on Facebook. 💖💖
Lisa: Wrong! After reading other comments regarding shutters, I MUST disagree with you. Those of us who want light control, clean, simple window coverings that will last for years, classic design, etc. love our shutters. I prefer the 4 inch white plantation shutters and have enjoyed them for 20 years. I am on the coast of Georgia where heat and light control is of utmost importance. My house is a small retirement home and draperies would be over whelming. I have owned 7 homes in my lifetime and had draperies in many of these homes. They hold dust, fade, become outdated, must be cleaned professionally, etc... As far as plantation shutters: they might not be for everyone, but in my situation they are ideal and classic, not outdated '90's. Reading the other comments, I notice others agree with me. Best investment I made for my home.
I have shutters on the outside on two windows of my house, it’s cute little detail on this 1960s beauty. They are good to have in summer to protect the room from the heat and in winter the cold. Inside shutters don’t make sense, but we don’t have one’s in Germany. Very old fashioned are crochet curtains, often see some in grandma’s house 👵 😅
Another enjoyable video! But I don't agree at all about mini blinds!😊 My apartment had all wide slates, faux oak & faux white wood 2 inch. Slowly I'm replacing them with my fav - mini blinds! Omg you only showed broken down mini blinds! (And why do people leave those up anyway?! Fix that people! What would your grandmother say?! lol) Anyway, I like mini blinds because at the right tilt they nearly disappear leaving it almost the look of no blinds at all, just nice, thin barely visible lines through beautiful curtains. Blinds overall are great though because you can control how much sunlight comes in & don't have to sacrifice all light from outside for privacy.
I remember buying cheap roller blinds for the three front windows. It’s all I could afford. They looked great until they didn’t. They started to deteriorate all together. I still am not a huge fan of traditional window treatments. I prefer paper to plastic. Love those pleated paper temporary shades. When they get a little too “antique” I just replace them maybe in a different way.
Shutters are timeless and beautiful. We just placed a bunch in our home and the light comes through just as much as before. I love them! Blinds are annoying we have those too and they can't compare to the ease and beauty of our shutters.
In regard to home decor, I go with what I need, then get it in a color scheme that works for the particular room. For window treatments, I go with vertical blinds as that is what co-exists with my pets. I can set them the way I need for control of light, and if my pets feel the need to look outside, they can push a vane aside. Drapes and horizontal blinds get a lot of wear and tear in a short span of time. BTW, saw an article online that said valances are sooooo dated! You and your family are the only ones living in your house. Get what suits you!
Totally understand you Pamela!!! 👏🏼 These treatments can totally depend on certain locations and circumstances - this is just my general opinion for each treatment that I see hasn't worked the best!! 🥰 I’m always looking out for you guys and recommending these treatments as best as I can, but only you know what you need for your own home!!! 🧡🏠😁
Thank you so much for this. I watched it again because I made a huge mistake recently with my curtains because of being cheap and in a hurry. I wanted the ceiling-to- just above the floor curtains, but the only ones I could afford were either too long or too short. I went with too short to save money and now I regret it. I should have gone with too long and hemmed them. I just hate how curtains that touch the floor get dirty on the bottom no matter how clean your house is. Dust is just sneaky. However, now all I see is how my curtains have to be too far from the ceiling and it is visually annoying. I am trying to decide whether to just take these down and sell them and try again or to buy another and cut it up to add length to the bottoms and add a decorative band to hide the low seam. Again, it is money that is guiding my choices. Ugh. If only we were all able to just get what we need when we need it, right?
Some very good info but I live my horizon shutters. They provide plenty of natural light and at night they close completely for privacy. I do have those European deep set windows though.
Great video Lisa, great pictures and examples as usual. One big caveat…..although I personally cannot believe people are still buying vertical blinds, I still LOVE- and have- wide plantation shutters! Living in the Deep South where light = heat we have learned that shutters keep our interiors darker and cooler, just like wide porches and verandahs. It is definitely a traditional southern look that, judging by the number of custom shutter companies, isn’t going away soon. Those things that help us reduce our dependence on air con also have a positive impact on the environment….our shutters are green! Signed, Shutter Lovers of America prez 😎
I totally get it Vera!!! I am looking out for you guys so you all have that pretty natural light in your home while giving that privacy!!! 😉👍🏼 Thank you so much for tuning in this week!! 💕
I've been binnge-watching your videos & love them! I have the wide slat blinds because I can't afford shutters. I'm pretty sure the blinds will look dated 15 years from now whereas the shutters are classic and should be considered architecture vs window treatments. I don't think they go with all styles of homes, but I think you're mistaken about dating them to one decade. Many many of us live in areas that cutting out the sun more days than not is essential. Now I'm retired, I close my drapes and blinds on the East side of my home each morning, then around midday I open those and go close all the West-facing ones.
Lisa, your solutions to our design and decorating issues are so helpful, especially for people like me. 😁 I whole heartedly agree with your "don'ts" . The previous owners had vertical blinds EVERYWHERE in our home...I couldn't get them down fast enough! I'm really looking forward to dezignclub starting. I love your ideas, energy and how you never talk down to us. When I see your videos are up I can't help but smile! XXOO ❤
Pat!!! LOVE hearing this - there's so many fun things happening soon, I can't hold my excitement!!! 😆 So glad you are just excited for the club as I am, it's going to be a BLAST!! Thank you so much for such sweet words, I love chatting it up with you all every week!!! 👏🏼💕😇
Happily my new home that has a horizontal glass tile backsplash in the kitchen, which you didn’t like, has gorgeous wide-slat blinds in all the windows. Except the sliding glass door which has simple drapes. And the kitchen window, which has the accordion paper shade that pushes up. Yay!
I personally love my wood plantation shutters in my Texas home, as opposed to the cheaper plastic faux wood blinds I now have in my Colorado condo. I agree with the person from New England who said that shutters were timeless. That said, I do agree with LH that the shutters with the tiny slats look very dated and I don’t like them.
If you have children, plan to have kids, or have kid visitors please please please choose CORDLESS blinds. It's usually just a little more expensive and has the very same look and is much safer!! My neighbor had a 4 year old get caught in the blind string and passed away, it was incredibly tragic and there are some blind companies that won't even make corded options now.
I hate vertical blinds but all of my windows are sliders. If I want to open the windows for air, roller shades and other blinds dont work. If the wind blows my cellular or roller shades bounce back and forth hitting the window frame. I just dont know what to do, i would like someting that I can control for privacy. Draperies are either open or closed. I need help
I can't understand why designers are so against vertical blinds. Our mid century lake home had ugly floor to ceiling drapes (similar to the ones you showed) which blocked the light and the view. First thing I did was get rid of the drapes. We installed beautiful linen look vertical blinds that brought light and the mid century vibes back. They stack smooth and thin at the sides opening up the view. I installed matching short verticals on the high short windows in the other rooms They look great open or closed and are so good for blocking sun glare.
I totally agree, they are just too practical to ever be forgotten completely, they maybe out of fashion right now but because of their versatility they will come back. I’m currently renovating my unit living area which has 2 x floor to almost ceiling windows and a glass sliding door. After thinking long and hard about something more modern, the only modernisation I did was go from 127mm slats to 89mm, which allowed me to keep all of them inside the window and door frame to give my small area more space. I will be changing the pvc slats though to light filtering ones
Like you, I am generally not a big fan of vertical blinds. Yet, like many others have commented, with all things considered, they are the best solution for the sliding glass doors located in the small living room in my townhouse. So, I have opted for privacy sheers that combine a sheer drape with vertical blinds. No chain involved and they move smoothly. It looks like a sheer yet has the privacy and light control that I need. Plain sheers take up more space and do not offer privacy at night. Previously, I had heavy lined drapes but it was too much fabric for the small space and there was no privacy when they were opened. Once I took them down, it was incredible at how much bigger the room looked and felt. Luminette privacy sheers look so much more streamlined and take up less space. IMHO they do not look cheap like plain vertical blinds often look. As far as window coverings go, I don't care for outside mount wooden blinds (my windows are not deep enough for inside mount) so I have opted instead for bottom up top down cellular shades that offer both insulation and differing levels of privacy. My townhome is located in a somewhat high traffic area so privacy is a must! When I moved in, the windows had clunky looking outside mount wide slatted wooden plantation blinds that were extremely heavy to pull up and when drawn up they took up a good portion of the viewing area. They also had a big unsightly header that made the 8 ft ceiling look even lower than it already is. My cellular shades are much more streamlined and clean looking. I may eventually soften the look by adding Belgium linen panels. I'm all in for high end tasteful design but many times a person has no choice but to do the best they can with what they have to work with to make their space aesthetically pleasing and functional regardless of what's considered dated or poor design. Enough of the vertical blind shaming! Always, always exceptions to the rule. All in all I enjoy your channel, Lisa! Your design expertise is greatly appreciated!
I just read in the comments that woman got shutters. It in a slider for her patio / sliding doors .Im intrigued ivebeing looking for a good-looking solution to sliding doors for along time !
This was so timely...I'm getting new window treatments and they were none of your "no's" 😂. My parent's have shutters and they actually look quite lovely in their home. Thanks and looking forward to the Design Club!
YAY you are on the right track Nancy!!! 👏🏼 The shutters totally depend on the style of your home - like Victorian homes!! STUNNING!!! 🤩 Thank you so much for tuning in this week - The launch of the Club is getting closer and closer!! EEEK!!! 🤗💗💥
Oh and shutters on a beach house I do like. Shutters were not just for light, but mostly to help with the wind as well. They were a backup for the window in a storm. You could lock and secure them with three latches back in the day and they gave a sense of security to island and coastal folks in a storm so if I had a beach house, I might just do some sturdy shutters,
Vertical blinds are actually the only viable solution for our west facing lake front cottage. Because the summer sunsets slowly move first north and later south on our western horizon during the summer, we need the vertical blinds to preserve the view but avoid the radiant heat of the summer sun.
Literally the reason why I just installed them in my new build home...I get the sunset and it heats up the living room to unbearable temperatures!! It's a great solution. Looks good and is practical.
You poked a hornet's nest with this one, Lisa! Did the Shutter Lovers of America share your video with their distribution list?!?! ;) For me, blackout is a key consideration for bedrooms, so fitted shades in a frame hide behind our curtains. Thanks for another informative video.
LOL Candace, you guys are super passionate about these shutters!!! 🤪 Craziness!!! Thank you so much for tuning in this week, I always love reading your comments and hearing what you have to say!! 🙌🏼😘😘😘
In my neighborhood in the South, white 100% wood plantation shutters reign supreme. I decided to take the plunge and add them to my home's windows a few months after I moved into my home last summer. At the same time I was obsessed with getting as much light into the house as possible which I didn't think possible with shutters. I was so very wrong! I chose the white wood 4-1/2 inch slat size - the largest available - with tilt bar and the larger size slat looks transitional as opposed to traditional. it's all about the slat size, I think. Like you, Lisa, before I got shutters I thought I'd hate having something like this on my windows, but in fact, I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved the shutters and look to them like architectural additions to the home which they are. My house is a true 'modern farmhouse colonial' style. The shutters class up my home like nobody's business and look amazing, and one year ago I would have never considered shutters. These were custom shutters done by a local business that's been in existence for almost 70 years, and it was an investment. Also, as an additional benefit, I am getting the most incredible restful sleep at night because when I close up tight the shutters' slats in my bedroom it becomes completely pitch black (100 percent better than blackout fabric curtains/shades). Plus, it looks very 'southern' looking into the windows from the 'street view'. Obviously, the shutters being discussed in Lisa's vid are a bit different (boring and 80s ish) from the truly modern shutters of today. Plus, some shutter options are without the tilt bar which makes the shutters look very sleek. My shutters were 'factory' painted to match the window molding which happened to be Sherwin Williams "Snowbound". I'm obviously a believer in these modern shutters and have zero regrets.
Interior design is very subjective and personal. There are certain universal rules to follow and some things that are extremely dated but beyond that dissing on someone else's design choices is just a way to make yourself feel superior to others. I'm not specifically addressing Lisa here...but most of the designers on UA-cam do similar videos. I think because these videos give others the opportunity to feel superior is the reason why they're some of the most watched. With these types of videos you're encouraging people to feel superior to others while alienating the rest.
Darcy!! I hope this isn't the impression you have with my channel... I want to make design SUPER FUN for you guys to learn & apply in your homes, not to shame you for not following every design rule! I am just a guide to learn from, not a rulebook that makes you follow certain rules - that's not fun!! I love that with design, everyone has their own take on it even though not everyone is going to agree with each other. I am so sorry if this left a bad taste in your mouth, this is definitely not my intention with my channel. I like interior design and I like to have fun with it on this channel!!! ❤️🥰
@@LisaHoltDesign I do love you and your channel though Lisa. I've learned a lot from you! I just disagree about my beautiful macreme curtains 🤣. Thank you for your reply 😊
I got rid of my verticals recently and put up solar blinds. My verticals cost $800CDN 7 years ago so not all verticals are cheap. As for shutters I think they're gorgeous.
I live in AZ and I like the light versatility of vertical blinds. Plus windows open left to right, horizontal blinds make it harder to open them. What do you suggest?
Oh, I hate the mini blinds too!!! Our house came with them everywhere and I HATE them! I’ve been wanting to replace them all, but hubby doesn’t see any problem with them. I’ve been “making do” by covering them with curtains, but I’d much rather have a roller shade or 2” wood/white horizontal blinds. You forgot to mention that the aluminum leaves grey marks on your frames after the paint wears off. And ours always jam up. They just suck!! And our house came with a vertical blind too, on the patio door. Finally pulled them off and put up curtains.
What a disaster Danielle!! 😳 I am glad you are trying to work with your hubby to get rid of those treatments!! Hopefully he can get on board after watching this video 😆💕
i have a french windows from the previous owner of the house , i love a touch of wood and i think a natural wood blinds will fit the japanji, natural, minimalistic interior that i like..
Totally disagree on shutters! Plantation shutters in Florida are a must and with the larger vane you have a lot of control over light/view. We are outside so much it is great to have the option to control light/heat once inside.
So good to hear and see your comments on wooden venetians, which I adore. Those photos are really lovely. I do still love the look of shutters and still can't afford them yet. But I see now that they're really meant for those rooms where you Want to reduce the light by 40%. In Australia, that's my room with North, West and East big windows. But I might just go the white woodlook slats instead.
"Venetian" blinds was a term my grandparents used in the 1940's. I believe they always had the (canvas?) tapes instead of strings--hence the MCM look. Today we just say blinds.
I agree with everything you said about shutters. I liked them before I owned them. Now that they are installed throughout my house, I hate them so much. They are so bulky and awkward to maneuver, especially when I need to actually open the window. They also really darken the space and because they swing open, it limits where I can place my furniture.
I am so glad to hear that someone agrees with me on the shutters!!! 😆❤️ I love my space to have tons of LIGHT in it!!! Ditch the shutters for some drapery!!! 🤩
I've got these double roller blinds on my windows. They can protect your interior from being seen from the outside, but they let a lot of light through when closed
HEY GUYS!!!! FINALLY, we're hitting the "BAD BOYS" of window treatments...be sure to let me know if you agree down below in the comments! And If you want to know more about the club, be sure to get on the waiting list at www.thedezignclub.com.....YAY!!!!
Am I on the list? 🤔
So glad I am not in the “do not do this” list
You,re funny😂😂
Here in New England, we do not consider shutters dated. We consider them timeless. 😊
too dark
Fair enough. I think it depends a lot on house style ... and practicality of course is the most important consideration.
That’s what we got too. Love that I can close the bottom but still have light coming in . Plus so much easier to keep clean than wood blinds.
Hi Lisa, I can agree with almost everything 😙 However I cannot agree with you when it comes to shutters and beach houses. I think they fit perfectly together.
I agree! I LOVE shutters!
Me too just told my son Florida to put them back. Gorgeous in their home.

Sounds great!
Yes, it went from a 1950s house complete with gold shaggy carpet ! Luxury vinyl plank throughout the house and tile in the kitchen and bath. Huge improvement !
All the Southern ladies gasped 😲 at the no shutters part. 🤣 We love our shutters down South.
I agree.
Our shutters are being installed today. I can't imagine this being a bad thing. El Paso, Texas...everyone here seems to have them and we just moved here and had to invest in them because of the heat. I think it's a great look.
I had white shutters in my last house, and I loved them! They are classic and classy IMO👍
I’ll have to disagree about the shutters; They look elegant & timeless to me, not dated at all.
I’m not that crazy about the plantation shutters.
I don’t hate them but I personally think they do look dated. Some people like that look though.
@@johnonethree I'm a Realtor, and I love them! Most folks think of them as a big bonus when they are buying a home, but I'm in SC, so maybe it's a regional thing? 🤔
I am a fan of shutters but they are dated, although very elegant but they do keep a lot of light out.
LOL Melissa, I love your passion about this!!! 🤣 I cannot wait for the Dezign Club either - it's coming sooner than you know!!! 😉
Have to disagree about shutters, they will always be a classic in the south, where light control is crucial in the summer

Good choice if air flow is desired

@@LisaHoltDesign As always, I appreciate all your advice. Plantation shutters are still huge in the Keys of FL, possibly because of hurricanes coming that way often. 😉
"Dated" is just a buzz word designers use to get people to needlessly redecorate their homes.
Love them also!
I think it is true that you have to have the deep window sills.

Shutters are the best! Classic and beautiful.
I don’t care if something is dated, if I like them I’m getting them. My house, my enjoyment!🤗🤗🤗
I have shutters in my beach house and I love them . They do let a significant amount of light in and can close when needed . They are easy to keep clean and are on trend with my coastal community .
That's great it works for you Lisa!!! It definitely doesn't work for every home which is why I made it a no-no!!! 😬
Hey Lisa , I know they are taste specific . But you made it sound like there in the same as the dread mini blinds 🙃
Soo wrong about the shutters! I have beautiful driftwood color wooden shutters that go with our coastal decor in FL.
I've never seen macrame window coverings before but THOSE ARE SO CUTE! I love them. I'm totally ok being wrong.
Me too!
I thought the macrame was cute too. Not in all homes, and mine is too traditional (2” blinds and drapery all the way for me) but with a bohemian decor I can see them working.
I just bought some macrame plant hangers to go around MFT kitchen windows and they are so cute 🥰 you aren’t wrong 🤓🤓
I'd love a macrame panel to hang between my drapes, and over my miniblinds, lmao.
The second she began saying no to macrame window treatments, all I could think was: agree to disagree!
Plantation is a romantic look? What?
@@lsamoa yes it is if u r in the house and not working the crops!
What I like about vertical blinds is privacy with light. You can direct the view and the light the whole length of the window.
Totally hear you on this FM!!! There's definitely other treatments that can serve the same solutions and looks so much better!!! 😍😍😍
my grandmother back in the 50'd called the wide blinds with the cloth lifters Venetian blinds.

Plantation shutters never go out of style! Have them in my entire house and love them still after 20 years!
My favorite too!
I think those are called Bermuda Shutters… I think.

Love the Plantation shutters, they works so well in Florida!!!!!
I love shutters. Goes well with my Arts and Crafts Mission style furniture. My shutters let in good amount of light and they are easier to clean.
I have the exact issue…in Florida. Not sure what to do to replace.
P.S. I’m in Australia.
This means so much to me Ilene!!! 🥰 I love hearing that these videos are helpful AND entertaining, glad these videos can make you laugh with me!!! 💜😆
I have a soft spot for macrame too.
Hi! I own up to a marked preference to shutters over blinds. SO much easier to clean and open and close etc. Especially with lovely deep windows. 😄

I LOVE to hear this Kayann!!! I can vision the room being sooo much brighter from here!! 🤩🤩
I’ve always loved shutters, I think they are classic. I can see your point about some being awkward. I think some of them look better than others.
I think plantation shutters are coming back and they are more functional in some places like the beach
Guess the verdict is
In- shutters are here to stay! Love them!
I prefer the minis too. I have both and the larger ones block too much light. I face south and need coverage.
I did half shutters in one room in my transitional home. I’m sorrrrrryyyyyyyy. I love them. 😭
I love curtains….period! So many to choose from and even better if you sew!! Classic cozy look!
Your energy is contagious! And your advice is spot on. I also love you speak about budget friendly. ❤️
Judith Thank you so much! xoxoxo
All I could think when you said Macrame was “What? But they’re SO GROOVY!” 😝😉.
You're absolutely right on mini blinds, shutters,....hate them.
Love my shutters in AZ!
Only way to go in AZ
I agree with no mini blinds and vertical blinds but I love my shutters, very functional. ❤️.
I totally get it Vera!!! I am looking out for you guys so you all have that pretty natural light in your home while giving that privacy!!! 😉👍🏼 Thank you so much for tuning in this week!! 💕
I put roman shades under my drapes for light control. So understated they're practically invisible.
They're magnetic.
They're fun to play with, lol
I whole heartedly agree with your "don'ts" .
@@LisaHoltDesign Me too! 😘
I have wood shutters in my bedroom and love them. I'm too in Texas.
Have two large West facing windows in Arizona. Just had shutters installed and love them. We want to filter out the light in this part of the world.
But I like those macrame treatments in someone else’s home. They take a good deal of work and skill to make. 😆😆😆
They're perfect in boho. Not great in traditional or super sleek modern.
They are pretty and I love macrame but I don't think they cover windows well like curtains do.
THANK YOU!!! I have never liked shutters or understood the fascination with them. I agreed 100% with everything you said about them.
I LOVE haring this Marsi, you have no idea!! 🤣 Thank you so much for tuning in and leaving this nice comment!! 💞
Lisa speaking of blinds ,I have sliding doors in my kitchen and I HATE HATE THOSE LONG VERTICAL blinds…what are other alternatives??
DRAPERY Gigi!!! 🙌🏼 I have a separate video on my channel talking about doing drapery the RIGHT way - make sure you check that video out!!! 😁🧡
Naw...you're wrong about plantation shutters. They're timeless and super practical for me here in sunny southern California.
I have plantation shutters covering my two sliding doors. They can be hung on tracks to slide back to open the doors. Great privacy and light control.
Literally the reason why I just installed them in my new build home...I get the sunset and it heats up the living room to unbearable temperatures!! It's a great solution. Looks good and is practical.
SHUTTERS = My favorite type of window treatments. Would buy a house with those in a heart beat. Classic.
You poked a hornet's nest with this one, Lisa! Did the Shutter Lovers of America share your video with their distribution list?!?! ;)
For me, blackout is a key consideration for bedrooms, so fitted shades in a frame hide behind our curtains.
Reminder set! Also you look vibrant in your thumbnail.
Aww, thanks Meow!!! the photog must've caught one of those rare good Hair days!!! ;);) xoxoxo
The mini blinds that are sandwiched in between glass work well.
i have a french windows from the previous owner of the house , i love a touch of wood and i think a natural wood blinds will fit the japanji, natural, minimalistic interior that i like..
Totally disagree on shutters! Plantation shutters in Florida are a must and with the larger vane you have a lot of control over light/view. We are outside so much it is great to have the option to control light/heat once inside.
I'm with you Lisa...I HATE vertical blinds!
Thank you!!! I am so glad we could bond over this!! 😁👍🏼
I’m still looking for an effective way to get privacy from the neighbours across the yard but keep the natural light in my living room
Drapery may be your solution Isa!!! I have a video about Do's and Don'ts on drapery, this will definitely help you if you want to go that route!! 👍🏼😁
Yep, same here. Decided on 2” blinds, semi sheers as well as white drapes.
I've got these double roller blinds on my windows. They can protect your interior from being seen from the outside, but they let a lot of light through when closed
