Ben your content is unbelievable. You and Pinholes Graham are making the absolute best, most captivating hockey content rn. There are some other people who make good stuff too but you 2 are just absolutely crushing it every video. I'm not even an Oilers fan and I'm very invested in this.
39:55 I went to this game! I remember Gagner broke the record for most points in a game. Chicago came off a long road streak and seemed tired and sluggish I remember.
Great video. It's weird though as a fan, not so much a stroll down memory lane as it is a midnight walk down a garbage filled alley where you got shivved ten years ago. Perfectly done! I really "appreciate" the Glencross highlight and the mention of the "excellent" trade of Brodziak, useful center, for a handful of half rotten magic beans. The attention to miserable details is impeccable.
The Ryan Smyth return trade is so great from a Kings perspective. Edmonton “threw in” Colin Fraser (I believe Brule was the original piece heading to LA), and Fraser anchored that 4th line of a cup team. That trade also allowed the Kings to re-sign Drew Doughty
The rare trade that was good for both teams. Some people whine about acquiring Smyth when he was already too old, but it was such a morale boost to have a player who wanted to be an Oiler at that time with his kind of hustle. He needed to retire an Oiler.
Only one that loss there was Smyth. The Kings win the cup that year regardless of having Fraser and it woulda given our boy his well-deserved ring. Hindsight is 20/20, just wish I coulda seen him hoist.
The one thing that I remembered from theat period is how the Oilers kept trying to catch lightning in a bottle, wanting to somehow recreate the 2006 team. It struck me as the wrong choice back then, and that was well before I realized this darkness would last a decade....
RNHs first season was also my first season as an Oilers Fan, so this Video is extra special to me. Love the format, looking forward to the next parts :)
Watching this again, and I have to say that the color filter and frame stutter thing you do for the Hawks game at 44:19 is genuinely a cool aesthetic. Feel like it could work really well for a freeze frame moment or as a style choice.
Yeah I didn't really understand how to fix the copyright issues when making the video, I genuinely even tried putting family guy clips over it, but then I realized I just had to break up the clips lmao
I love this retrospective and your format + edit pacing. I will have to watch this tomorrow but I am commenting now so The Algorithm(tm) gets some juice
Great video! A note on Souray's hand operation, he actually told the story first on Cabbie Richards old TSN podcast before the John Scott interview. The Cabbie interview has been a bit lost to time.
its so wild looking back that of all the 1st overall picks from the dark ages its Nuge that becane the only remaining one and the backbone of the team.
Totally random but to show you how tough Cogliano is he finished a game once with a fractured neck... always been on of my favourite bottom 6 players in the league
I still find it interesting that throughout the roster turnover of the Decade of Darkness, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has stayed with the Oilers (until being waived this season, this was Gagner's third stint with the Oilers, and who knows if he stays with the Oilers).
Big fan of this series but I have to ask. Were the Oilers allowed to trade with anyone besides the Ducks?? Absolutely incredible how many deals they struck
Been a fan since the 80’s and I’m not sure what’s worse; this decade of darkness or having two of the best players ever and not winning a Cup. Time will tell.

The way they handled Souray was such a microcosm of the Oilers franchise at the time. Egotistical and ridiculous management. So glad Lowe is not in charge anymore.
If there is any way to sum this up, Steve Tambellini is quietly one of if not the worst general managers in NHL history that isn't named Mike Milbury. It is easy to forget that the Oilers were treading water and at least in the playoff conversation later into seasons when he took over, the pain didn't truly begin until he took office.
Tambellini was very bad, but the wild thing is, I'm not sure he is even the worst GM of the DOD, that guy's coming probably in part 4, old Peter Chiarelli
@@oakley22610 I do disagree with that take, Chiarelli was extremely flawed but did some genuinely good things here. Fixed Edmonton's drafting and signed McDavid and Draisaitl to long term deals, he plays a large part as to why the Oilers are decent right now, a number of his draft picks in later rounds are playing on the team today. Tambellini's 2009 off season is easily the worst in Oilers history, he made the wrong moves in every single area of the organization.
@@devackroyd you're right, the Draisaitl and McDavid contracts alone help him. I guess he was just more extreme than Tambellini, very high highs and low lows. Tambellini just slowly made the team worse

However, he drafted players like Evan Bouchard, Stuart Skinner, Ryan McLeod and even Vincent Desharnais in the 7th round in 2016, which is actually one of the more successful late round picks in that entire draft, among others. “Even better”
Tell that to Dan Snyder
This video could be made about every team in Canada for the last 31 years!
Yeah but the Oilers are the only one with an actual name for it
I think a flames series called "forever stuck in the middle" could be a cool series
Ironically enough what has always plagued the flames is them not bottoming out like the Oilers did during this decade.

That Dubnyk goalie looks pretty good as a number 1. Theres's no way the oilers will trade him for a 4th line player.....
You missed when the oilers offered Hossa a 10×10 contract in the 2008 off-season but he signed a one year with detroit.
