If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have self-respect, dignity, and pride, they should gracefully retire for the greater good of humanity, as they are past their prime years and there is no visible evidence of an upside. There is no shame in accepting that they are done and dusted as cricketers due to a lack of hunger, eyesight issues, and technical deficiencies.

Today is the last day for very few individuals ( like me ) who love watching India play Test Match Cricket. It’s actually the end of an era.
I started hearing and watching Test Cricket 48 years ago when India toured Australia in 1977 and now after another tour of Australia which ended today in 2025 , I feel it’s an end of Test Match Cricket in India. Great players like Gavaskar , Vishwanath , Kapil Dev , Sachin , Dravid , Sehwag , Kumble and many more played in this time zone , when Sachin retired I thought cricket is over , but one player stood out and made us all proud to be fan of Indian Test Match Cricket. Along with Dhoni Rohit Ashwin Bumrah this man Virat Kohli spearheaded the team for last 14 years.
Sadly , after such an exhibition of his playing skills , I feel his body is not responding to what his mind is telling him to do , without him Test Match Cricket in India doesn’t seem to have big future ahead. Only Jaiswal and to some extent maybe Gill is there and the cupboard is bare.
For me and many of us who are the fan of the purist form of cricket , sadly it’s over now. No more 5 days of white clothing , red ball , lunch and tea interval , 2 innings , but yes the memories provided by all the greats will be itched in our heart and mind.
Thank you to everyone who provided us the best of Test Match Cricket.
    05.01.25.

In a recent chat with you, DK correctly pointed out that we have short term memories. Soon, everyone will forget this debacle. Cricket board can strong arm other boards but finds it extremely difficult to take tough decisions on star/celebrity players. Poor team selection was seen throughout BGT. Ashwin retired mid series!! Rookie seamers, Sarfaraz warming the bench, no test temperament within the team barring a few players. It is a downward spiral for Indian cricket. Loss against NZ, SL and now AUS!! Terrible time for Indian cricket fans too.

1.Just like in 2018, we went with 4 proper bowlers where the objective was to pick 20 wickets in a test, has died down. We need to bring that back.
2.Develop categories and develop them in the new NCA facility, for example swing bowlers from Ranji- 1,2,3 , HTD bowlers- 1,2,3 cosistent lengths-1 , 2 ,3 at the same time there should be no compromise on discipline in line and lengths, game awareness and adding one more skill in their basket.
    3. Create only 2 types of pitches for ranji- Flat decks and green tops, which would help bowlers with their line and lengths and batsmen their discipline for leaving the bowls.
    4. Have one proper spinner who can play in all conditions some like, Kumar Karthikeya, Shams Mulani or tanay Thyagarajan , Manav Suthar.
    5. We shouldnt stop investing on backup players even for allrounders like Nitish Reddy.

Ind's situation in the series shows how hard it is to manage their fast bowlers properly. During Dravid's time as coach, there wasn’t much focus on building a strong backup for our pacers. But in the Shastri-Kohli era, there was a clear plan..Bumrah was rarely used in home matches so he could stay fresh for tough overseas games. Under Dravid, Bumrah & Siraj were overused & new bowlers didn’t get enough chances. Akashdeep only played when Bumrah needed rest, Mukesh got too many games without showing much..Unadkat returned for just one match & Prasidh was ignored after a few games. Promising players like Avesh, Khaleel & Arshdeep hardly got any opportunities. Even now, with so many series happening one after the other, the team management seems lost when it comes to planning for fast bowlers. Kohli & Shastri deserve credit for their smart handling of pacers. Remember the home series against SA, where India’s fast bowlers performed better than the spinners? Shastri, who was often criticized, actually built a strong bowling attack that could compete with the best teams. India now needs someone with a similar vision to rebuild the pace department. Without a clear plan, it will be very hard to win in countries like SA, Eng, NZ & Aus.

      1) political quota
      2) BCCI's strategic failure in estimating a T20 team coach to be a successful Test match coach too. It's like comparing class 6th with class 12th in school.

My team for English tour: The 11- Jaiswal, Sudarshan Washington, Jurel, Pant, Nitish Mohit Jangda Kuldeep Yadav Rana, Akashdeep Boomra. Rahul Gill should work on their mental side of the game. I have kept Washi at 3 coz he looks as a very good batter with good technique. Jurel has a strong mindset and could prove very solid. 5. Pant. 6. Nitish. 7. Mohit Jangda a very underated seam bowling allrounder A proper left armer who can bat well. 8 Rana (Hit the deck ) 9. Akashdeep (Swing bowler perfect for England) Both of them can hold the bat) 10 K. Remaining 7 are Ruturaj (Reserve Opener) Tilak , Musheer and Devdutt (Reserve Middle order) Manav Suthar (Reserve Spinner) Mukesh and Arshdeep (Reserve Fast bowlers) my 18 member team for England. The Reserves are: Yash Dayal, Avesh, Khaleel, Shrijit and Kotyan. these 23 players should be on the plane to England. Thank you Rohit, virat, jaddu, Rahul. Gill and Siraj have to go back to domestic cricket.

Harsha, let me tell you very openely and honestly, India players are not at all focusing on International cricket particulalrly test cricket. Bidding happens in IPL not in international cricket. IPL is the time of harvest for them. I am not aganist IPL. But I strongly recommend that once the players are selected to the international squad, they has to be protected from IPL. Last years, I have noted that some seniors players are rested for International tour, and they make come back in the IPL, Injured players playing in IPL. If I say this no one will hear. Harsha, I have a humble request. If you are convinced in this argument, please use your influence to intimate concerend people and creating an awareness. Considering experienced players who may not have the opportunity to play domestic cricket with red ball due to various reasons and probably schedule conflicts , best way is to structure test match series tour in such a way so that there are enough practice game or 3-day game between each test match which can also help decide who really can be match fit during that tour and get selected for next test match. The current form should be given priority than past form for each match selection.

    Selection Gaffes throughout the series:
    Test 1
    - Rana was a green-horn, Prasidh should have played instead (thankfully it didn't hurt India)
    - Why was even a spinner played at Perth?
    Test 2
    - Why was Akashdeep not picked instead of Rana? It was a tailor-made wicket for Akashdeep. As it happened, Rana got hammered and India were down to 2 bowlers
    Test 3
    - Inexplicable drop of Ashwin at Brisbane. I could have understood if Washington was picked given his performance in 2020-21 at the Gabba, but why Jadeja?
    - Rana could have actually played this match. His height and bounce would have worked here
    Test 4
    - Blunder to play 2 spinners
    - Blunder for Rohit to open and disturb KL Rahul
    - Blunder to overbowl Bunrah. NKR bowled just 1 over in Australia's 2nd innings and Washington just 4 overs.
    Test 5
    - Blunder to play 2 spinners
    - Blunder for Rohit to sit out while Kohli was playing. Both should have been dropped together as a package
This series should have been 2-2 or 2-1 in India's favour. 100% sure that the disrespect shown to Ashwin and his forced retirement, confusion on when Rohit Sharma would be available at the start of the series, and the dressing room intrigues on captaincy in the last ticket destroyed the team morale.

The issue lies solely with the top five batsmen, not the all-rounders or bowlers. To understand this, reflect on the era a decade ago when MS Dhoni was captain. Even when opponents posted massive scores of 600+ runs, India still managed to stay competitive. The driving force behind those comebacks was the brilliance of players like Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and Dhoni’s leadership. The current predicament, therefore, squarely falls on the shoulders of the batsmen. Unless the top order consistently delivers runs, India's prospects remain bleak.

I really think it's a proper transition period for the Indian cricket test team..and the way to move forward is to take a hard look and accept the shortcomings to work on that. Number 1, we need start getting more fast bowlers to play international test cricket. We keep talking about having a lot of options in the fast bowling department but without getting them to play more test cricket your are thrusting them in the cauldron of Australia and England without them settling down. Stop playing Bumrah and siraj in home conditions and groom in new fast bowlers for home seasons that way they will be prepared with international cricket overs in their bank to tackle SENA countries. 2. Go back to the drawing board grassroots and identify your spinners. This is going to be the biggest challenge with Ashwin gone. There are very few potential candidates to replace him and you will expect to see some test match losses in home conditions now as we have lost a great spinner with no succession plans. 3. Invest in batter that have decent defense technique (need not be rock solid) but can also score quickly. Scoring rates have increased in test cricket and you need batters to match that. You need to have a proper mix of batters. Every batter cannot be a risabh pant or even a KL Rahul. There needs to be a proper mix..4. Work on mental side of the game with them players that come in. Coaches of Indian team are not appointed to work on a players technical game. That should be done in the domestic level. They need to work on their situational awareness and mental aptitude

Lovely points Harsha. My 2 cents - BCCI should consider establishing cricket academies in key international locations where India tours. These academies could develop local talent into competitive teams to challenge our test players, fostering global cricketing standards and preserving the essence of test cricket. This approach, akin to playing golf on diverse courses against varied styles, celebrates challenges in sport and enriches the game. This is the only way forward for the Indian teams in the future.

Harsha sir, yesterday Sanjay Manjrekar in his Cricinfo show had suggested that Kohli & even Gill for that matter should play County cricket just before the England series and not the Ranji trophy. I think that's bang on because it's only in County cricket that they will get to adapt to playing the quicker seaming ball.
And he also said that the England series is starting late in June. There's a small window there, as small as it may be, but enough no. of matches left in the County season for one to prepare. Kohli & family will be shifting his residence to London as some reports suggested. Even if not, it's worth a try playing there for a good three or four 4 day matches. So there's the window there, if Sanjay is correct with the schedule of the County season. Hope Virat uses it.
And completely agree with you about what you said about 'A' tours. It has to come back. Especially for the sake of developing our new fast bowlers. It was evident that they lacked the first class experience, not in our spin friendly wickets in the Ranji trophy, but in SENA countries as you say. And for heaven's sake, somebody please tell the BCCI & the selectors to please please do not fast track fast bowlers into test matches and expect that someone among them will do wonders and the job then is made easy. No, it doesn't work like that. We need to develop their first class experience. Be it through 'A' tours or a full season of County. I think legends like Zaheer Khan & Javagal Srinath benefited so much from playing a season there if I'm not mistaken. So that's the route. Or as you so correctly say, proper 'A' tours round the year.
Always a delight listening to you, Sir. Enjoying your content on this channel and also in Cricbuzz with DK.

I think one of the biggest issues is the home pitches India has played on since 2019 barring the recent England Series. The pitches make batting a lottery and as a result our batsmen have had declining returns. This has the knock on effect of batsmen being out of form and being unable to play long innings with patience away from home. It's easy to criticise Kohli but the top 3 weren't helping him, as he was constantly exposed to the new ball. The aim should have been to bat the first 30 overs and build a platform. I think the biggest issue in this series was India's bowling Bumrah aside as they could not build any pressure or take wickets at key stages, which proved costly compared with Australia's pace attack. On the bowling friendly surfaces MCG aside, the bowlers needed to do more. To let Australia make 430 at Brisbane was really poor.

Thanks for the video Harsha you made things clear however I differ on Test match cricket as the Path should not be T20 it should be Ranji & other Tours where Mentality and Temperament is tested and we lose the BGT due to this two missing important points.

One of the way you recognise a test batsman is classical Dravid or Pujara or VVS Laxman, who would love to bat all 5 days in Test. Any batsman who loves to bat continuously for all 5 days that is a batsman we need in the team. Even Sehwag or Sachin loved to bat for long long hours and score runs. batsman should love to bat as much as they can

You dont realise the fact that in those times, there were more draws because of which crowd started moving away to ODIs , T20Is made it worse . Now the pitches are curated to be result-oriented to bring back the public interest in Tests even if it means land mines or greener patches. So if you dont have batsman who dont have the scoring abilities , you might be blown away in 2days. Example being Sri Lanka after 2014 , Pakistan after 2012-13.

Kohli will average less than 20 if he plays the England test series. His career test average will be 40-45 than 45-50. Newly developed Kookaburra ball swung more in Australia and Australian pitches were bowler friendly for the most part. In England, Duke ball with swing bowlers is a nightmare for Kohli. He will struggle worse than in Australia.

No problem with T20 and ODI squads. But I feel the decline of Test for Indian team just started. No proper players to replace Rohit, Kohli, Shami, Ashwin. For last 20-30 years we had Dravid and Pujara as wall in one down. Gill or KL are no where near to them, not any domestic player. Sunday is nowhere near Ashwin standards. Zero support for Bumrah, none of younf players show that skill. 2027 WTC is gone case. Just hope we dont lose too many tests at home

What Indian team lacking is humility. Humility goes a long way.. Indian team is full of players who thinks they are bigger than the game. Us fans as well have a significant part in it. We worship them as celebrities.. Learn from Australia. You could see the players casually strolling in the street and people minding their business. Australia is forever a mighty cricket team because they look at the game as game and team as team and players as players, not gods...

The biggest problem of Indian Cricket :
The biggest issue with Indian Test cricket, highlighted in the recent BGT series debacle, is the lack of investment in grooming new players. India continues to rely on underperforming superstars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill, while ignoring promising talents like Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj who haven't been given enough opportunities to grow. Bowlers like Nitish Reddy are labeled as all-rounders but aren't utilized properly, while players like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep are dropped after a couple of matches. This lack of continuity and reluctance to develop a strong bench is why India struggles to find reliable replacements and remains overly dependent on a handful of names.

I think it is high time we look past the superstar status when it comes to team selection. If it was Australia the superstars wouldn't have got such an extended run to come back to form. To make matters worse to make the batting line up healthy the selection had to include the likes of washy who was underutilised as a bowler and his batting also didn't click. Had the superstars played better before coming into BGT, we could have gone for an extra specialist fast bowler.

Agree, not sure why we are shying away from the fact, kohli and sharma are useless in red ball cricket, not sure why we show kohlis 3 year record and the last one year record, to put the record straight, last 5 years the guy who is supposed to talisman indian batting, some say he is the greatest batter ever, laughable at best, is syruhgling and averaging around 30, really biased nature of commentators and selectors is putting the long term of future of indian cricket in jeopardy, kohli and sharma should be sacked no matter what they do whether they play county or domestic cricket, they can decide their retirement thoughts in their living rooms but not in the cricket field making a mockery of meritocracy. Shame that we can't fire 2 cricketers from red ball cricket and even white ball cricket based on performance, I think if it was corporate they would have long gone.

Not sure that when there is mention of Rana and Akashdeep…why is Prasidh not mentioned ??? He got 6 wickets in Sydney and gave us a good start in both innings of Australian batting innings. Hope he is not sidelined after just 1 test !! He definitely bowled better than Akashdeep and Rana. In my opinion, after Rohit and Kohli ( if they are dropped) Gill, Reddy, Pant and Sundar should form the pure batting lineup! Bowlers can be Siraj, Bumrah, Krishna and Shami (if fit ). Time to blood Umran Malik and Mayank Yadav for some genuine pace. Kuldeep Yadav can be the lone spinner for England. Jadeja can be the back up spinner.
