Adrien François Servais, dubbed the ‘Paganini of the cello’, collaborated with three of the greatest violin virtuosi of his time, the Belgians Joseph Ghys, Henry Vieuxtemps and Hubert Léonard, to create the six duets for violin and cello. Whether based on the British national anthem or Yankee Doodle, on music by Beethoven or Meyerbeer, or on original themes, these duets abound in virtuosic demands including double stops, harmonics, simultaneous cadenzas and astonishing passage work, generating almost orchestral textures which embody the Romantic love of display and heightened emotionalism.

About the Artists:
One of the most creative and versatile artists of his generation, German-born Friedemann Eichhorn’s artistic activities range from performing early Baroque music on period instruments to classical and contemporary works with renowned orchestras and chamber music partners. Among many other pieces, Friedemann Eichhorn rediscovered and first recorded the complete violin concertos by French virtuoso Pierre Rode.
The cellist Alexander Hülshoff has appeared as guest soloist with major international orchestras, has collaborated with many chamber music ensembles and renowned artists. His numerous recordings included works by Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich, Bloch and Servais. He is artistic director of the Orchesterzentrum in Dortmund (www.orchesterzentrum.de), the institute for professional orchestral training of four universities of music (Cologne, Essen, Düsseldorf, Detmold). Since 2011 he has also served as artistic director of the Villa Musica (www.villamusica.de).
