A little observation: the Cambridge axa25 integrated amplifier doesn’t have a phono stage . The axa35 does.

Way cool. SPEAKERS question... (Aside: love the travel slice. Thinking about getting Malaysia's visa (MM2H) but that's another topic.)
I got a really good impression of the tall speakers you reviewed... Emotiva Tall not short... And I can see you're sticking to a budget here... But if you had the whole budget to drop on just one thing? The Emotiva TALL, right?
Just for fun: For a long time, my system was Chromecast Audio plugged into JBL Charge 3s, paired. Then I wanted Zu Dirty Weekend passives (extremely efficient👍) so I needed an amp. Got Klipsch Powergate (close out pricing) and moved the Chromecast Audio to input on that. (ASR data showed that little amp was great at, like $85?)
The wiim amp was a vast simplification and has all the assistants, so I retired the Klipsch + Chromecast Audio.
In an unrelated simplification, I got divorced and since I was moving stuff anyway, I took a minute to plug the TV into the Wiim and retire my Sony soundbar+sub. Way, way, simpler now ...on so many many levels.
(Aside: I believe the Chromecast Is actually a pretty good DAC, but I assume the wiim amp onboard DAC is new enough to automatically be better... hold that thought.)
Now then, the ASR people don't like Zu. I like 'em fine, but I hate to pass up a deal. Emotiva has been on my radar 👍 since shopping amps the first time... But these tall horns look like they'd be a very good buy (a great bang for every little buck) and then I can fiddle with DAC when I have time... I want to understand why op amps are a thing...
So just for fun, your budget cutoff on speakers seems to me like it leaves some value on the table, as compared to the tall speakers... though a budget is a budget! And I think i paid too much for the Zu pair... so I'm asking... 😂
Love your content! ...So far I'm resisting watches after selling my Cartier... But that too is a whole 'nother conversation. Cheers bro!

I purchased the AS301 a couple of years ago. I'm running it with an Aiyima tube preamp. I am driving the Jamo S809s and a pair of Emotiva B1+ speakers with a Polk subwoofer for a 4.1 system. It is not my main listening room but makes a great and economical secondary system. It sounds great to me. The AS301 is all I need for an amplifier. No need to go any more expensive than that.

Do any of the integrated amplifiers you have reviewed offer HT Bypass & can they control 2 subwoofers? Or would you think it is better to buy an external DAC & Streamer? My set up consists of Sony A95L 77”, Denon X4800H, B&W 704S3, B&W Center Channel HTM72S3 and JL Audio Sub D110 & Athena AS-R1.2 Bipole Surrounds. Thanks for any help you can provide! PM

I am still having trouble with the whole movement away from AM/FM Stereo receivers... I guess I'm old school, and like how radio provides what's popular now, as well as stations with a mix of the classics, without having to pay for subscriptions.

Your point about new music has just been elevated to me, recently. We had a local alternative station go off the air (now streaming for free) a few weeks ago, and I've really noticed how much more new stuff I would hear in about two hours there, versus five hours of listening to Sirius, DirecTV, Pandora channels in the genre ...

    • @FelixtheMetalcat

You always have the option of just listening to Internet radio stations of your choice for free..... that's what I've done for the past 18 years. To clarify my thought, I am speaking of Internet radio stations that are independently run, not affiliated with any form of commercial radio or college radio. There are loads of options.

    • @jC-kc4si
      @jC-kc4si 2 місяці тому +1

I guess it depends where you live. Locally a single company bought up most of the tiny mom and pop unique radio stations and now those stations lost their character. There is college radio and usually you can stream that over the Internet. Radio and broadcast TV isn't what it used to be.

Hi Randy, a good piece to test your speakers for reviews, or just enjoy, in case you wouldn't have heard of it: "Måneskin - Valentine" (The world's last rock band - NY Times), when you're tired of rest, listened a million times. I know I get tired with always the same stuff...
So, the kind of rock you would like, I believe, and what's missing in today's musical scene, more or less.
Anyway, seems like a good song, going crescendo, little like Led Zep. at times, strong bass, voice and guitar, and I thought I'd share. Best...

If you're really pinching pennies, for amplification, av receivers from eras past can be had at thrifts stores for under $20! That's too great a savings to ignore. I've found some exceptional receivers while thrift shopping from Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, Denon, Sony & Sony ES even. I can't recommend that more than even the "chi-fi" class d amps as you add so many inputs, maybe a phono in, usually a good dac on board as well.

    • @JohnShalamskas

When I upgraded my home theater receiver to one with HDMI, I repurposed my old Yamaha receiver as my computer audio amp. I also upgraded the large left and right speakers so the old ones became my computer speakers. And since the new L and R speakers had powered subs, I was able to use my 10 inch sub on the computer speaker system. So when I bought an electric guitar, I already had an excellent full range flat response speaker system for use with modellers. Sounds amazing, for no added investment.

OK, so this is stupid I know. I don't get why the fascination with all this streaming junk? When I started in music and hi-fi, I bought LPs. Later, I bought CDs. I'm still buying CDs now but when I can't find them I'll get MP3's and burn to CD. The point is, all the music is mine. I don't depend on anybody's server to keep working forever and I don't have to worry about my music going out of circulation. I never noticed I had a problem? This streaming stuff is out of hand. How many services and subscription fees would a person have to pay?
