I have to honest and say that I’m watching fewer and fewer channels now, and restricting myself to just a few where the content is refreshing and inspiring. This is one and The Art of Photography is another. We as viewers are shaping what is served to us. We might complain about ‘all the content being the same’ but if that’s what we are watching, the algorithm will continue to serve it up. In a way it’s up to us to influence what is promoted. It also calls for confidence on the part of the content creators to put out material that is innovative and interesting. We need to support these people.

Totally agree with all channels mentioned. Scott French is another for me. It seems that the dilemma described mimics what I experience in photography. Maybe it's best to just focus on our passions - our followers may be fewer, but the experiences will be richer. So go deep rather than wide, perhaps.

There are a few names in this comment and responses, of other channels that I know well. Alex's approach of art school lecture type and motivational videos totally stay away from "tools". To me, Alex does great from the start of his channel.
Forbes discusses tools in between 80% and 90% of his content and to me that's a waste of time. While he has turned pages of some photography as art books, his own photography boils down to elevated snapshots.
Simon - very knowledgeable in the technical side, but could be more structured in the sense of breaking lessons down for different levels of prior knowledge. I did photography school in the late 70s - the curriculum is an applied/vocational BSc today - and from the general technical photography point of view there's nothing new. As most fluencers do not have that background, I see most of them making errors at the deeper levels. After 10 years well-paid professional photography, I went back to university and studied a.o. a full Bachelor/Master curriculum of software engineering with AI, which I also taught at those levels. So digital photography has no secrets, although I must admit it took me some time to figure out how stupid it really is. We all are bothered most by the Bayer paradigm. And most "luminance noise" or "colour noise" that fluencers talk about merely is inadequate or failed raw processing - they should call the noise "Bayer noise". DxOMark state they test "sensors" - not they don't.
The videos in YT generally are at the wrong level of abstraction and make very fundamental mistakes. Imagine a Ytoober in their video showing two images in Lightroom Classic and saying of the left one, that it is "raw" while the right one had some AI Denoise applied. They don't know their shit and actually have never seen a raw image "as is". Happens too many times in most "tool" focused videos. Simon is on the best side, not perfect.
Sean presents his videos as a sermon in a church. And next to the preaching tone, there also is a sadness in his tone. I am allergic to sermons and do not need the sadness. Sorry. (Sean has been a minister in a church community, by the way, I discovered later.)
If you are familiar with art history - painters, sculptors, architects - then which of these fluencer people in YT today will have their photographs hanging in a museum of art?
If that is not your ambition as a student of their lessons, then you can learn more, faster, by spending time out there shooting.
A fool with a tool is still a fool.
And I hasten to add that a pro with inappropriate tools also is a fool.
Idiots waste my time with "1.8 is not professional" and then "I need 1.4" or "1.2". Baloney and a silly excuse to not shoot images.

Please keep producing content that is meaningful to you, Alex. That's what resonates with us. I think channels like yours, Ted's, Sean's etc are the ones people come to when we've ploughed through all of those other channels. Your channels are the gems we find and stick with. Thank you :-)

Your dedication to educating others about the art of photography is truly admirable. The way you break down complex concepts into easy-to-understand discussions empowers countless aspiring photographers. Your channel isn't just a platform; it's a nurturing space where creativity and learning blossom hand in hand. Keep enlightening, guiding, and sparking that passion for photography in everyone you teach.
Here's to illuminating minds and framing futures through the lens of knowledge!

Hi Alex - you can't fix the algorithm - don't try. Views and the measures that UA-cam uses are not something to chase. Repeating your message is important, and it's also important to remember that we live in an edited world.
No matter how good anyone is in taking pictures, choosing what to show and what not to show is an essential skill. Great pictures are a distillation of the captured and the published.
How to distil our myriad of captures is truly important and that process will never be boring.
Don't worry about account views. Please keep making the videos.
    Thanks for the great work.
    Mike

The other day I walked into an ornate establishment and took a few pictures with my camera. A woman, quite shyly, walked up to me and said, "Please, only cell phone pictures, thank you." I stared at her with a look of bewilderment and disbelief. I wanted to ask her what the difference was, but decided to be nice and just leave.

What consistently resonates in your presentations is depth. You converse with us, your viewers, well below the surface to the core of the topic. Just deep enough into that topic to inspire our own explorations. There are not many presenters of your caliber in the tabloid world of UA-cam. Please continue.

What I love about your channel is that you make it acceptable to do photography in different ways. You talk about other photographers and the way that they see. You focus on the creative end, the parts that you will never find in a book. Technical topics aren't a big deal because you are more interested in the essence of photography. Keep it going!

Hi Alex, I rarely comment, but you really moved me - congratulations! A mature , but beginner photographer ... yadda yadda... i can comment at this point that first - all of us need to let photography go through us. Technology, art... all of it. During the process we start to express ourselves through photography. Then, everything depends a lot about what is moving us: Money? Fame? Competitiveness? Looking at all the photography related videos - all of them swing between technology and art. Naturally. Two aspects of the photography. You are the only one I found so far clearly addressing: Expressing our own personalities through photography. I find you and the CamerasLensesEtc the opposites on the spectrum and I thank you both!

I dislike three things about many UA-cam videos. 1. Music overlaying when people are talking, in particular, but most generic music. 2. Waving hands. Can these go the way of flared pants? 3. Rapid cuts that don't have continuity. And that is why I like this channel!

  • @iqueque

I like Peter McKinnon’s work because it is beautifully crafted, entertaining, original and the films are short. It is entertainment rather than instructional. And I like Thomas Heaton’s cheerful approach to life. I watch yours and Sean Tuckers for thoughtful insights and introductions to great photography from great photographers. For the rest, I search for a specific topic that I want to learn or brush up on, usually post processing topics. After 55 years of taking photographs I feel there is not a lot I can learn from the majority of UA-cam photography channels.
Thus I ignore what UA-cam serves up on my home page.

Your channel is so refreshing to watch. I love that you dig into the why of photography. The gear channels get as exhausting as a time share salesman. They can be useful when I am actually shopping for some kit but once that decision is made they are useless to me. The reason I watch your content is because you push me out of my previously acquired comfort zone. I am a point in my life when I can and want to dedicate time to an artistic endeavor. Photography makes me feel good because, for me, it combines the tech side, which I find easier to develop, with the art of creating something. However, when I lose inspiration for photography, often because I've been doing too much shooting for other people, I turn to your videos to regain inspiration. Your comments about authenticity really hit the nail on the head. Conversing and sharing real perspectives and ideas is how we move forward. Endless streams of "how to's" throw, me at least, off balance and make me question my photographic methodologies, and then I lose track of the why and keep falling back to the how. I've been photographing for over 30 years. I know how! Finding inspiration in a new project and staying true to a vision is where the challenge lies.

I have to agree that there is a lot of regurgitated content on UA-cam. But what has been great about your channel, and why I have chosen not just to watch your channel but interact with you, is that you filled a void in this space. There aren't enough channels like this one, or Tatiana Hoppers, Sean Tuckers, etc. But in the long run that can put you in a lead position. I do enjoy other channels for different reasons...I'm not a landscape photographer but I watch James Popsys because I think he's funny....I don't shoot much medium format film but I watch Kyle Mcdougall's because I love his process. This is all a long winded way of saying I think you're in a perfect spot to do what you do. The algorithm sucks...but when I want contemplative, engaging content I come here! 👍

Alex, your channel is one of the rare ones out there that I've kept watching over the years. I've pretty much stopped watching gear reviews and how-to's long ago and crave depth in thought and discourse, which is what I rely on you to deliver. Thank you!
Depth will always be a narrower audience in any hobby-even profession, because gear and technical are accessible from day 1 of having interest-and there's a lot of people who have interest and aspirations. For better or for worse, aspirations drive sales, which subsidizes the cost of gear for all because that market segment is sizeable for any interest.
That being said, depth is gold, and you're definitely delivering it. Thanks again! 🙏

One thing I do like about you is that you do not do gear reviews. There are so many UA-camrs who started off with a photography channel that just turned into a review channel. I do not blame them whatsoever either as I would do the same thing as well but still gets annoying sometimes when you are watching a video and then it hits you "Oh this is an ad for a new lens". Wont name names but I am sure anyone reading this could name a name and it would be a yup, that one.

Hey Alex. I’ve been on and off about photography for about 5 years! I am not even sure how I got interested in it! It just kinda fell onto me. Alls I know is it captured my interest greatly and I’ve dipped my toes in for about 5 years! Your channel has been a huge relief because you talk about the actual art of photography! Not just how to make a good image that’ll appeal to the vast majority of people! And as a person who loves the visual arts but is a terrible creative but still
Seeks a creative outlet. You have helped me with photography a tremendous amount! I always resort to your channel pretty much anything photography related! Keep up the great work

Your channel is very special, with lots of inspiring references touching countless people wanting to go deeper with our photography. Not all of us have the opportunity to get a creative education as your own. Your content and the way you talk about it reminds me of my own days in art school, way before UA-cam was a reality. With enligthened people like yourself we can all continue to learn for life. Thanks for being here and doing, what you do so well, Alex.

Alex - I think I have watched the majority of your videos and can honestly say that I have not seen one of them that I have not enjoyed, or been inspired and/or challenged by. Quite a few of them I recommended on the FB page run by the university photography school I attended 2018-21, and received a number of positive comments back from fellow students and grads. I tend to find channels that I like and stick to them (maybe its an age thing lol), and that's why I am a subscriber to yours. Long may you continue to delight, inform and challenge me with your particular style and choice of content. Happy New Year and looking forward to what you serve up in 2024.

When I finally started to pursue my lifelong interest in photography a couple years ago I came to UA-cam to learn as much as I could. At first I enjoyed watching some of the technical mumbo jumbo but it was because I didn’t know anything about things like the exposure triangle. Once I started to have a good understanding of the technical side of photography that stuff became boring for me. I found your channel pretty early on in my search for knowledge and it has remained my favorite. While I also enjoy other channels, it’s yours that I always suggest to other people. I really enjoyed the first video’s I came across because it was so interesting to learn about other photographers. I’ve always felt that you could learn so much from those who came before you. This channel has always felt unique and personal to me. It has had its own soul and didn’t feel so generic like all the others out there. Your video’s feel more like a one on one conversation than just someone spouting flashy attention grabbing words. This channel is more philosophical and goes deeper into what photography is. Keep being you and doing what you do. It’s the uniqueness you have brought to the channel that has kept the same people continuing to follow you video after video. Another thing that I have loved about your channel that seems different compared to others is that when watching yours I don’t feel lesser than. I feel like I could sit down with you and have a conversation as an equal even though you clearly have the time and experience I don’t. I respect the kindness you show to everyone. Thank you for taking the time to make these video’s.

Thank you for another enlightening video, Alex. Like many others who have commented, I scroll through the channels at offer to find something satisfying to watch and learn from. There are only a handful of channels I watch regularly, and yours of course is one. Please keep on doing what you're doing as long as you feel like doing it. Also, now I'm looking forward to finding your initial videos to see you looking "professional." 🙂

In looking at your playlist, I now know that I have a lot of catching up to do! Keep up the good work. I cant even remember when i saw first of your videos, but it was exactly that different tone and angle to things which made me get really interested about your channel. I'm totally "newb" on photography. Quite quickly i got bored many photography channels i watched. This and few others have stayed on my watch list. Keep up doing things you enjoy to talk and have something to say. Screw that algo (i know, easier said than done).

Thank you for this video. You're the third or fourth UA-camr I subscribe to who has expressed similar sentiments this month. Many channels I used to enjoy have become gear of the minute and precious little about what said gear can bring to photography. I now know a lot of lenses that will take sharp pictures of brick walls or throw almost everything out of focus, and cameras that will fill a memory card in seconds. Anyway, you prompted me to go through my subscriptions and see which ones had offered me anything about photography in the past six months to a year. About half got culled.

Keep on with what you do as long at you enjoy it. PS, Next time, a «fatter» vocal sound, wouldn´t hurt. Best regards, Morgan F (Norwegian photographer and journalist)

Thank you for the heartfelt video. I so agree about channels just rehashing the same things. I have begun to clear out channels that may have offered me something in the past but no longer really provide me with useful information. I need to spend more time watching a select number of channels and spend more time taking photographs or editing the ones I've taken. Happy New Year!

Thank you, and happy 2024. I look forward to more good content from you/your channel.

Hi Alex, what you present is exactly what I love, I don’t need people to tell me how to take a picture or what lens to use eyecup, etc what I want is to explore other photographers work who are new to me, items that lead me down “rabbit holes “ and find something fresh. Yes I’ve followed Ted, Sean, you and now Tatiania and you all make photography interesting, so keep up the good work and I wish you all the best for the New Year 👏👏

Jamie Windsor is, inarguably, one of the most unique photographers on the platform. Not for his images but because he speaks purley to add something new to the conversation, which he does. This is def misleading u can call him boring, have ur opinion but to call his work a rehash is just not true. 🤷🏾‍♂️

UA-cam is a fabulous resource, but to get the best from it, don't sit back and let it serve up what it wants to show you, use an external search engine to look for the type of content you want to see.

Hello Alex! As you’ve mentioned, some others in so-called photography channels occupy themselves with reviewing - “pitching”? - gear and techniques that makes them resemble a cacophony of one another, sort of a bazaar for photographers. I must say that if I have to choose one word to explain what attracts me to you and your channel, it is: “honesty”. Your honesty in conveying to your viewers what is the intended message of a photograph - or the photographer. Keep up the great work, and an early happy 2024 to you!
