I've seen some instructors in a study with some instructors that are so advanced. They're so incredible but they can only teach other teachers they've so Advanced that they can't speak to normal beginners. Death explain it to somebody who is already a super Advanced teacher themselves who has then explain it to lesser to lesser to lesser to break it down into actual application. This is a wonderful example of this super Advanced teacher who could teach the best teachers but still is able to communicate and articulate and demonstrate in such a way that a novice could learn from him.

This was why I jokingly kept asking my instructor why he calls his art a self defense system when it is basically a killing system. Because after several months of training the basic stick techniques we moved on to advanced techniques using the knife, and everything he taught me then usually ended with either stabbing my opponent in the kidneys or slitting his throat. And all this after going to his blindside and basically taking his back while standing. How the hell am I gonna justify that as self defense?

You're correct. Kali, Arnis, Escrima, whatever you call it, its not a self defense system or a martial art. Its a killing art. The defense comes when you've killed or incapacitated your enemy, not when he's still capable of fighting. Unless, of course, if you both call it quits.

True, as a filipino Kali is a traditional MA from our ancestors, it has many variations since philippines is an archipelago, so many tribesmen, but its not taught for self defense, it is meant to do for One thing , To Kill, it was passed down from tribes families generations, kali fighting was a way to settle disputes between tribes or any1 it coull be a land dispute , foodsource , oppression, invasion, etc… i remember what our grandpas story, when two practitioners of kali have their duel they will tie ropes in each hands or body to make it sure only the best will survived😂😂, cant imagine the brutality but thats how it was. But the kali that we know in modern times is evolving and its all about preservation and valued this unique MA… grandpa and his cuz served well their time 😢 cause $h8 happened when you are in a wrong place in a wrong time,,,

Back then if you got in a fight it would be in the middle of the jungle against another guy from a different tribe and the cause of the fight would've been bragging rights of who got to take home the head of the other guy.

This is what I teach people when I teach about knife defense. If you can't run. Grab their wrist slide down 2cm & hold their hand with all your strength. Then make them extremely uncomfortable to offset their balance. Once you do, pull them down by their hand until it's on the floor step on their wrist as hard as you can & then start throwing punches at their face until they stop moving. That's your only way to make sure they won't get up & use that knife after you start walking away.

Not what I learned in knife fighting class with the Army Rangers. Once you get contact with your knife, you cut a C, and filet up. Basically, once you break skin, you don't slice deeper, you cut a piece of meat off.
In this case, once he makes contact, he could cut the C, and go straight up his arm, basically skimming off the bone. He'd have half an arm left, and generally people stop fighting at that point and fall over from lack of blood to their brain. Same with a leg if you fall over. Cut the achilles, drag the blade up and take off their calf muscle.
Kinda hardcore, but that's how you do real damage.

I've had a few bad situations in my life. The worst, I was shot and left for dead. Another was an attempted robbery of me and my wife Christmas shopping, when in parking lot. Once a guy came at me with a tire tool out of the blue. I was just out of high school. I was terrified but had the wit about me to pull my pocket knife, put my left arm in a defense position for my head while taking a side step and back. I said if you swing that you better hope it kills me because I'm going to cut you as deep as I can. It was like time froze and luckily for me he did not swing the tire tool. I've often thought of how close one of us or both was to death that night. Like you in training we had the 21 foot rule and were told if within that distance upon
drawing your weapon, expect to get cut.

Yes Ken I saw were you said that. I'm 54 years old and have been blessed. The streets can be a rough place at times. It wasn't my intention to insult you Ken. My intention was to associate my experiences with yours. As a law enforcement officer I went back to work 2 years after being hit with a shotgun at 5 foot in my lower right flank. Loosing 1/2 my liver, one kidney, part of my intestine, busted right lung, 7 section of rib, half the muscle in my back, a hole size of a cantaloupe in my back and hole in abdominal wall. 127 shrapnel and bone fragments up and down my spine 5 in the half liver I have, 1 in my elbow and 2 in my hip etc. 2 years later I went back to work as a city officer in a small town. A few years later I retired because of health. Retired and disabled now with lots of issues. I died during this and now know there is definitely something after all this. I credit God, good doctors and nurses and training in martial arts for the meditation which taught me breathing control, control of emotions and focus. Sometimes folks experience this kind of stuff, like I did and I hope if someone who reads this has such experience, that this helps them have hope and courage to survive.

Some of the old masters are actually convicts who have killed or survived knife attacks in their life.
Some of the older ones were guerilla fighters who used arnis to kill enemies in WW2 and from what I know, our country used to have a BOLO-Man battallion, much like the historic Katipuneros, who are mainly armed with machetes and bamboo spears.
My personal street experience is that those who do not train are usually the instigators, feeling strong as they are armed, have the numbers and the element of surprise. But when given an equal or stronger opposition, they would disingage and walk away. Much like predators who would not continue the hunt if the prey fights back. Unsurprisingly, I had in 2 occasions seen a fight stop and disperse by just pretending to draw a knife.
That person is a pintado. Historically, the culture of pintados (tatoos), are writen stories and accomplisments in their life as tatoos. Those who know can read them. Some of those tatoos are counts of persons they have killed in headhunting.
