Many filipinos don't even practice their own martial art. I know more foreigners who practice arnis/kali than actual filipinos. We should start apreciating our martial arts because this is one of the very few that really defines our being filipino.
I used to teach my kids this but now I prefer wrestling or boxing. Kids will have more fun and more chance to test their skills in a safe but very competitive environment .
It used to be a closely-held secret among Filipino families that was passed down through generations. Originally used to repel foreign invaders, the skill was kept hidden among clans for centuries, and it was strictly forbidden to share it with outsiders.
Maybe due to the scarcity of the present practitioners, they broke that long time taboo. The elders of these martial arts are, as you see, already grew old and most youths here in the Philippines have no interest in this traditional martial arts of ours.
@@KraxzLorcan It was not because the youth here in the Philippines have no interest in Kali. Kali is not just a martial art, it is an art of killing. A Kali practitioner can kill his/her opponent in a matter of seconds. That's how dangerous this martial art is. As a result, only the military and law enforcement officers in the Philippines were trained in this combat style because they were disciplined to use it. This is also the advantage of our soldiers in the battle field. But now that this is taught around the world, every special force will now have this in their repertoire.
My son is taking stick fighting here in North Carolina USA. It has built his confidence. He was shy after coming to the US from the Philippines, and the training keeps him in touch with his culture. I have posted videos of his training.
@Ako si KUYA @ iba pa Idiot. I've been teaching Kali for years. I'm talking about the terminologies being used. Casually using "stick fighting" may seem harmless. But if you take in to account the core implications of words and how the understanding of people are on different levels, true masters who did the work and cultural research will have to be strict with using the right terms so as the core nature of the knowledge you're trying to impart will not fade away and is resistant to modification over time. The goal is to have that solidity, even hundreds or thousands of years after you're gone. Even if the art is updated. And before you get confused, being modified and being updated are two totally different things. Victims of terminological misuse by these fake masters are people who are just on the fence of this world. What's even more sad is that these victims actually think they know what they're talking about. Isn't that right? LOL.

'Balintawak' was founded or, initially developed (as a philosophy, really) in my city. The old city 'name tag' is still there! The guy who taught him is (was) also from my city. His characterization of the 'art' as "brutal" hits me with historical references: we grew up with kali/arnis practitioners willing to fight (in the streets!) to prove their worth! Things have changed since...and, GM Bobby comes from that 'historical context'. Real fights using kamagong.
During in my 1st year High School we were taught, how to use Arnis as a self defense, it was just the basic, This is the first time I've seen this intense strike and defense.. so great.
Even Bruce Lee himself adopted this Filipino martial arts, you can check it out on his Enter the Dragon and his other movies as well. During the Spanish-Filipino war, this stick fighting style (Arnis in Filipino) was being used by Filipino resistance fighters, along with the Machete (Itak in Filipino) against the enemy...Original Filipino martial arts, and being a Filipino myself I'm so proud of this to be promoted and taught by this amazing Filipino Arnis master throughout the world...:)
BRUCE ALCORIZA it was Danny Innosanto his friend who Stated he helped BL to form Jeet Kun Do, that's why Bruce Lee gave him all authority to teach it, and is also the sole keeper to teach JKD and was responsible in introducing and teaching Bruce Lee the Arnis.

The weird thing about Arnis and Eskrima is that you start with weapons and then progress into bare hands. The highest level is barehanded. Totally backwards compared to systems like Kobudo.
thats how all martial art develop, remember martial arts were taught assuming that a farmer has pole/sickle/hoe, fishermen have oars and hooks back then... but youre absolutely right, hence the saying "Heart is a Spear" which translates to something like anything can be the spear(if a spear user)
An arnis instructor told me that they do it like that in order to have the students develop the instinct of looking for any kind of weapon first, and if there is none, then that's the time to fight with barehands. If a Karateka for example gets attacked by a person who has a knife, his first instinct would be to punch or kick since that's what he's trained to do, and he'll be at a huge disadvantage if the guy with the knife actually knows how to use it properly. Take Jason Bourne for example. He used a pen against a guy who has a knife instead of fighting with barehands :)
