Farm update 333, How a new poultry farm is built with all the latest technology & welfare care

- If you’ve ever wondered how Britains most popular meat is produced, here’s your chance to find out. 6 state of the art sheds, each housing 40,000 birds with all the latest technology giving the highest care and welfare standards.
We meet all the family and George explains in great depth how bio security is so important with Avian Influenza cases springing up in the County. The automation, technology and computerisation of everything from the windows, heat recovery and ventilation to the weighing of the birds automatically, feed bins, power and water back up in emergencies, is hugely impressive.
This new broiler farm is only a few hundred yards from our main farm so we’ll have more visits again.
Fascinating to see the poultry unit Wardy, it's one hell of a set up.
Have a great time in SA.
Thank you, we’ve just arrived!
Morning Andrew, another great update. Really interesting to see the poultry farm. It is amazing what investment goes into farming poultry on a big scale. I, like many don't think about what goes into rearing the birds when I buy a chicken for Sunday dinner. Technology these days is just amazing, really impressed. Just something came up on my phone was an article in one of the newspapers last week. It was an article about growing sugar beet. Basically it was one person's narrow minded view about growing sugar beet and how it's adding to the cost of health issues in this country. It was mentioned how farmers grow it as a break crop but moan about costs and profits. I wish these people looked at the bigger picture before writing these articles. Anyway Andrew, have a lovely holiday.
I’ve had that levelled at me about s beet but a lot of food has sugar in in, without, it would taste vile. It’s like McDonalds and other fast food though. It’s fine in moderation.
Thanks Andrew for showing another side to food production
Very impressive, huge investment. Many thanks George
Morning Andrew,
I hope Rhonda and yourself have an amazing break, well deserved
What an amazing setup that poultry farm is. Well planned out, nearly future proof, great disease precautions to
I hope you can get a return visit, when it's up and running, see the bird's through the observation windows
Certainly animal welfare has been a priority factor in the planning
It certainly won't have cost a poultry amount
On a different subject, flooding, i came across a film on the fenland watermen
UA-cam site, Fenland On Film, uploaded 1 year ago, title The Pattern Of Britain- Fenlands (1945) shows the maintenance and history of fens as well as some farming,
Take care all
Back UK Farmer's 🇬🇧
Geoff
Thanks Geoff, someone else has mentioned that, I’m going to watch it while in SA
Great video Andrew .Hope you both have a great holiday in South Africa
😊👍
Another great Video Andrew, very interesting and well explained by George. Have a great Holiday and enjoy.
😊👍
Crickey that is some set up! My first Saturday/sunday job when i was a whipper snapper was for lloyds feeds on a battery and chick unit! It was 10 timber sheds with an auger system for hen muck and the remnants of a speaker system for the birds to listen too! Youll be pleased to know Andrew I was the second fastest egg picker! The owners wife maggie was the fastest! (Poetry in motion)! Thanks Andrew.
That was fascinating! Properly well thought out and designed site, great to see welfare is a priority. Have a great time away, hope you both enjoy a trip of a lifetime!
😊👍
Another fascinating farm tour Andrew. George explained the process very clearly for those of us that are not familiar with chicken farming on a massive scale! Looking forward to going back when the sheds are filled.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Great video andrew, that's a right set up for the chickens. A farm i worked on as a lad had the old wooden chicken sheds, they're still standing to this day. Mind, i think they've got asbestos corrugatex sheets on them. So, it would be quite expensive to remove 😁
You really know your audience Andrew. Yet again you have provided enough information in this one video to keep both general interest and specific interests happy! Thanks for the time you put into these updated, you must spend a lot of time organising each and every one for us! That may not be represented in the numbers of responses, but it is more than any other YT'er goes to! Thanks again and hope you enjoy your holiday and get the rest you so deserve! Have a lovely time and see you when you get home . We will just have to make do with the recorded items you have arranged, but there is no substitute for the real thing.
Thanks Ian. 😊👍
This is most probably the most interesting thing I have seen in a long time investing for the future i can’t imagine the cost so much detail in your update have a fantastic holiday Andrew
Very best regards the retired farmer
👍😊
Very Interesting to See what goes into a modern unit. Never seen the Heat Exchanger concept before. Was a lot of Broiler Production in N.E. Scotland, But significantly less now since the loss of Local Processing. Many Sheds refitted to Produce Free Range Eggs instead. But some standing idle as not enough acres for Hens to Roam on.
Thank you Andrew for this upload .Didn’t realise the high technology that gos into rearing poultry very interesting . Kind regards and thanks again👍👍❤👌🏻
Hope you both enjoy your HOLS❤️👍❤️👍
@shirleydrury5565 😊👍
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard enjoy👍❤️👍❤️

Hello Andrew ,well what an investment for George and family ,exiting times for him ,we wish him well ,have a wonderfull holiday in south africa, all the best ,Roger
😊👍
I have lived close to George's Chesterfield farm all my life, and he and his family have worked incredibly hard to build it up over the years, thanks for showing us this Andrew, and thankyou George, David and family for allowing it to be filmed, have a nice holiday Andrew and Rhonda. (See you at the Red Lion tomorrow dinner Reuben and Tom.) 😅
What a operation Andrew thank you so much enjoy your holiday 👍🏴
👍😊
Another very interesting video, and being able to better understand the process of our food getting from farm to fork, and how important farmers our to us all
That is a very impressive site and chap behind it. Despite the fact that we are both in poultry our egg sheds are completely different with the kit we have
Good evening, Andrew. What a cracking setup at that chicken farm. I'm totally amazed with it all
A really interesting video. Highlights the infrastructure scale & cost and the associated farming demands required to produce a supermarket chicken which retails at £6
Fantastic update Andrew, hopefully you get back there when the birds are in, have a great holiday be great to see some of Africa on here.
😊👍
Technology used in the rearing of the chickens amazing. But can see the necessity for back up systems
Haven't commented in a while since returning to work from 3 months off, although I have watched every episode.
Have a wonderful holiday the both of you 😊
The poultry farm definitely looks extremely good! Brilliant to see the welfare standards being so high for the birds arriving. The technology in the sheds is just amazing!
Great to see the sunshine in glorious Lincolnshire! Feeling like spring is just around the corner! The land is looking good all around at the moment, let's hope that continues.
👍😊
Hope you both enjoy South Africa ❤
👌😊👍
Hi Andrew what a great setup 👍
Enjoy your holiday, that's a fine set up, the new poultry farm, good luck to All.
Hi Andrew, been watching your videos mostly for a few years, I’ve been a chicken catcher for over 2 years now after working as a stockman at G R Wards poultry site for 18months, good to see you educating people on this side of things as many people aren’t aware of what goes into producing chicken. Can’t wait to go to this site as it’s local and helpfully the litter will be nice and dry which is very ideal for us chicken catchers for hand catch or machine.
😊👍
nice to see how things have moved over 40yr ago i started my building career constructing chicken sheds and farm buildings in the Yorkshire area all these years on it still looks pretty similar to me just more modern and of course the addition of computers, those buildings now a little bit bigger always impressive and the turn around time and the huge quantity with the birds a flash back to the days where has my life gone good video cheers
Looks to be a huge outlay with the sheds and infastructure. Hope they've got a good bank manager.
That white truck with the digger on the trailer is one of ours !, the lads said they had to tidy the site up before they could ever get started 😂.
REALLY interesting video! Thank you for this one! 🤩🙏🏼
Best regards, broiler breeder from Finland! 🇫🇮🐥
great video andrew very impressive set up
Wow Andrew that is some serious chicken rearing outfit, not !like back in the day I had to clean out a few dozen with shovel and wheelbarrow and put in new bedding of old peat mixed with powdered lime, which was almost impossible to breath but managed to keep the birds happy, brialliant video as usual👍👍, oh and you and Rhonda have a good holiday
👌👍😊
Thank you Mr. Ward for an outstanding lesson on the poultry business. Smaller versions of those air-to-air heat exchangers have been used in well-sealed homes in the US, to maintain about .35 air changes per hour.
Bon voyage!
I have one in our new house we built a year ago. 😊👍
What a fantastic video Andrew as all ways lot off money on that place any way have a lovely holiday both off you.
Enjoy Africa.. We will get you to Namibia next!
Thanks for excellent video, amazing investment and risk for the farmer
Interesting video ,been a chicken farmer myself for a lifetime, one bit of advice. You can have all the latest technology ,but you still have to adjust things on a regular basis ,every crop of chickens will be different. And you definitely couldn't write a book on how to do it Best off luck with your new venture. 🎉
Enjoy a very well deserved holiday in South Africa - any videos about the Blue Train and/or Vineyards would be greatly appreciated.
I’ll see what I can do but wi fi in Pretoria is dire, both public and hotel.
Never realised that the poultry business was so big massive investment wonder what the return in capitol will be 😊
Andrew what an interesting video . Isn’t George a. Very switched on guy his attention to detail on setting that new broiler unit is untrue there’s a. Few units like that near me I can’t get over from being chicks to when they go you wouldn’t believe anything could grow that. Quick but. They are. Bred to mature very quick today and the. Conditions they are in a setup like George’s how can they miss and every credit to him I don’t there’s. Anything he hasn’t thought of in that new setup regarding health status and Andrew thanks for a brilliant video and I hope you and Rhonda have a super holiday you’ll absolutely love it there
Thank you. It’s a really great and impressive set up.
Amazing to watch but at the end are the birds tasty the ones from Simpsons butchers are nice and tasty good vid.
very interesting video
In 2017 the farm I used to work on made a multi million investment into chicken farming with 6, 50000 bird sheds , and a massive bio mass burner to burn the chicken muck which heated the sheds for the next crop of chickens , as smart as it is , it’s amazing how quickly the machinery as in motors cables, pulleys etc soon degrade and break due to the environment, with the heat and all the jet washing and chemicals involved. The cleaning of the sheds and setting up is a extremely hard week and always a race against time , must admit definitely don’t miss it
There’s going to be a good few tonnes of poultry litter then 7.4 crops a year .
I guess they’ll have customers already waiting for it ?
Will you have any Andrew ?
Hopefully. 👍😊
Is there not some stupid rule that the litter can’t be used within 10 miles ( or something) from the unit it is generated. I knew somebody that had two farms with poultry units and had to cart the litter from one to the other 🤷♂️🤷♂️, may have changed now I don’t know
Not heard that one!
Have a great holiday. I will be in the Western Cape for 6 weeks from the 23rd Feb
Cracking update again Andrew. I wonder what the protests were all about then to have that much police presence? Jesus that poultry unit was a hell of a set up pretty impressive. Hope you and Ronda have a fantastic holiday mate. 😊
Thank you, just arrived
@ perfect, enjoy it mate you both work hard enough and you deserve it. Can’t wait to see a few updates from there. Don’t worry about us here in the cold pissing rain 😂😂😂
@jonstephens682 😂😂😂 27° here!!
@ oh be quiet 😂😂
The protest was about freeing Tommy Robinson from what I am aware, and a counter protest.
Morning Andrew this was a very good interesting update, is it possible to grow soya in the uk!
And have a great holiday!!
I don’t think so because the climate isn’t right.
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Martin Lole of Mzuri was doing trials on growing soya many years ago when I visited ,it had been fairly successful that year but I haven't heard anything since.
What a really interesting video and tour. Thanks for sharing. One thing I have learnt from activists is that they will root around your dead stock bins and lay the fallen stock out in the sheds to create a false impression of poor hygiene, welfare etc, so good secure dead stock shed is a must. Some thought and a LOT of investment gone into that site. Good luck.
The protest was mainly about getting our country back against the government a lot of them protesting were at the farmers march supporting farmers
Why did they need so many police to manage them? We didn’t. The police said all protests start off as medium risk. They downgraded ours to low and said they would go lower next time if they could, but the ones in the video they went to high because of past trouble so I’m not sure I’d want them at any farmers rallies if they have that reputation.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard as far as I know if it was the british march it was peaceful and this is instilled into people to do this they are afraid of anti protests
.I as an ex farmer think we need to stand together for our country. Ps I was delivering concrete yesterday in the beautiful northern pennines land formed by farmers ill stand for this any day
@barrywalker3730 The gov need everyone to be against them, but peacefully.
Hi Andrew John very interesting walk round the poultry buildings but you need clips on microphones for the people you are talking to sound quality not very good James at PX uses the clip on microphones seem to work well keep the videos coming kind regards John Durham
I have some but I couldn’t find them!
Really interesting video of an operation at the top of their game, thank you for sharing.
Olly Harrison mentioned on his YT channel that he has diversified to protect his business, and he mentioned 14 different income streams. I would be interested, if it isn't sensitive information, how many incomes streams you have?
Lots to go wrong on start up there Andrew .
George has been in poultry for 20 years, and his family have been longer so I’m sure they have everything covered.
Any rain water harvesting for the mating? For the birds in the summer?
Has to be clean water, with AI around everything had to be ultra clean.
Been many years since I have been on a poultry unit, so fascinating to see the modern technology that goes in to the industry. I shudder to think of the investment required to set up . I wonder over how many years the payback is? Enjoy S.Africa.
Thank you.
Why 12 separate LPG tanks and not maybe 2 large ones?
Are you going to be getting the chicken muck 👌💯
Are you having the broiler muck from the site
Hopefully
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard will that replace the sewage sludge, you will have some busy days taking the muck from the site every 6 weeks, have to build a tunnel under the A17.there was an article of a farmer in Essex heavy clay not ploughed in 30 years is starting to do rotational ,thinks Nitrogen locked up in the organic matter, went from 3 to 8% ,doing shallow ploughing at 11 inch furrow, not sure what the difference is between that and min till to release the nitrogen
A group of Herefordshire farmers have just come back from SA,to Haygrove fruits, also developed the poly tunnel design, has operations in other countries,Martin will know more about him,you might even go to the same vine yards as they did
Hi
Is that a Morspan site ?
They put the sheds up
I may be wrong but I think a lot of soya used in animal feed is a byproduct, i think it may have been procesed and for oil,
Hope the aroma is less than the Chicken farm near us. I used to work at as a Saturday boy in the 70s. It was less than a mile away and whiffy when the wind came from the NW.
Love the idea of a train holiday - I'm sure it will be special. South Africa makes my plan for Anitas' Birthday in July look a bit tame - can't share details as it's top secret until July 26th. 😹😹
In London of course all the trouble came from the counter protesters with the Socialist Workers placards, the ones all wearing face masks. The Patriots were all respectful and quite a few wore suits and ties, but the the MSM don't show that.
Will you be growing the food for the chickens seeing as you are next door or will it be foreign imports that's travelled thousands of miles?
To me this where a large farm business is the way forward or a proper Co-Op, arable growing the chicken feed and the feed for an AD plant for the gas for the heating, glass houses using the heat from the chicken sheds growing high cost salad crops etc, chicken manure being spread back onto the fields. A complete circle. Everyone has cut out the variables affected by world events, gas, transport costs, commodity swings, etc. Mixed farming like it use to be long ago where all the eggs (no pun intended) are not in one basket or using todays buzzword or "Diversification". Include cattle, eggs, pigs, etc.
Not me personally but it’s coming from a local mill which will be using local wheat but some imported soya.
6 week lifespan🐔🤑 how many million to set up, £££££????😮🤔
Interesting, but surely hard yo beat a chicken outside running about
It is but with AI about, they have to be shut up anyway.
All those supposedly poor farmer's unwilling to pay their fair share of tax, beyond Disgusting !!
Not fair share when the returns from producing your food are so small.
The audio (yeah, yeah) is pretty poor (yeah).
Wardy is too loud and needs to stop saying "yeah" and George is not loud enough.
Video of the demo was a waste of time (what was it _for_ ?)
But not too bad all considered
I thought there was no money to be made in chook farming....
There is in this country, I think it’s the most popular meat
And then you say you can not make any money from farming. But off on holiday. And not a cheap one at that.
You need to watch back, I’ve not paid for it! 🙄
Excellent video, you pass a poultry units and never thinking how much detail and technology involved, this is obviously all Bells and whistles, dread to think the size of investment involved££££
