The Best RC Truck Ever Made - RadioShack 4x4 Offroader

- I have very fond memories of this truck as a kid, and I'm thrilled to have one on the bench. I'm quietly stoked I picked up one that wasn't working (and without a remote) as I've now got the chance to bring this toy into the modern age of digital proportional steering and throttle control, lipo batteries and brushless motors.... wait, scrap that last bit!
I’m 42 and still have mine. Fully functional after all these years.
I'm 50 and got mine when I was 10-11 and I still own her. Mine is beautiful still like brand new and I also still have the original packaging.this was my first RC car and I love this old truck.
These and other radio Shack stuff was tough, as was the Tyco, Nikko, and tayio stuff. Toy grade RC stuff today is made to throw away.
i guess at the time I had a truck they made through the 2000s called Monster Patrol, was my first 4x4 tho i ruined the gears in mud but it still ran.
I just bought The Black Version with Orange headlights and rear spoiler off eBay in working condition.
I had one when I was a kid as well, however it died and it was lost to the test of time. Sadly.
Thanks for sharing mate, gonna look forward to doing the same to mine when it shows up.
I bought my son a $30 RC for Christmas, and it was broken within 3 days..... There seems to be a huge space between affordable rubbish from the toy shop and the higher end hobby grade trucks. Although these retailed for AUD 99 back in the 1980's so not exactly cheap.
This is awesome. I had the blue one as a kid, still have my yellow one to this day. Has a bad transistor in the controller.
I've pretty much worked out a system for good and reliable upgrade process to this car. I'll be posting my full process video soon!
I have one too. It is in very good condition but it does not work. But its very fun to play with! One of my top toys. And thats saying a lot!
I just won that exact body on ebay for $10 American. I'm hoping to put it on a custom radio shack pro pulse T100 (rc 18 clone kinda). I'm hoping it'll work out.
Sweet truck. I have so many fond memories of Nikko and RadioShack cars 😊
The saying "They just don't make them like they used to" has never been so true!
I had a RC truck that looked super similar to this, but was mostly black. It also had a switch to turn on/off engine noise. I've never been able to find out which model it was, but this one is the closest so far.
There are various vintage RC toy groups on FB you could try asking there?
I had one of these. I loved it it lasted years and years
Did you get the original remote or would you like one
Any one know what the port on the bed is used for?
Charger
They don’t make these the way the use to! Radio Shack use to make great big monster trucks that were so fun and awesome, but now, everything is smaller and not as fun or as good quality.
Couldn't agree more! Being able to use the low gear and go on adventures through the garden was one of my fondest childhood memories
nice project I have a couple of these trucks had one since I was a kid don't have any of them working yet but I will be posting videos when I do keep up the good work
Sounds. Good. I'm still tempted to load one of these guys up with a brushless system!
I have the same truck
I have 2 modded trucks. using a tpro mg996r servo. hobbywing 1060 esc. small 2s lipo. they work awesome.
Cool. Did you notice a big jump in speed moving to Lipo. It's a significant jump moving from 4.8V the NiMh supplies to the 7.4V from the lipo. Any videos of them?
Yes. Both speed and power. With the stock motor. I use a wltoys lipo. 1100 mah.
I have 2 videos posted of one of my trucks.
That is cool and what a great project 2 thumbs up.
+Shayen RC Enthusiast. Thanks!Stage 1 upgrades will include steering servo and esc replacement. Posting video this week.
Good Job ;)
I had mine up till '97 I accidentally drove it off of a sea wall at Philippe park in Clearwater Florida.. Salt water didn't do it any favors. Fortunately a nice boater fished it out for me, but it was never the same..
I picked up this at the garage sale for $1 yesterday. It had some electric problem, but easy fixed. Love this truck. I might upgrade servo and motor soon. :)
+ParadisePopcorn Kang Epic! You know what they're going for on eBay?? That's a great score. I'm always on the lookout for RC of this era.
Radioshack rc cars are virtually unbreakables.
And addictive. I'm up to 3 yellow, 1 blue and 1 black! Eek!
why is a mark 1 got a mark 2 shell on it?
I think different countries had slight variations.
i had the same one, if i recall they came like this (blue) and a yellow one, correct?
westernsharpie blue , yellow and black ( I had a black one )
Different country's had different variations. Lots of other colours and sold under different brands.
Ihave this boxed in mint condition also a Tandy Zebra Buggy Off Roader from my childhood awesome ....iv also subbed you bro
+The Rc Hunter lets see it! Post a link!
I will buy that 4x4 off roader if its the blue one
So glad I came across your video! I literally just saved a near mint condition one of these trucks from the garbage after a family members garage sale! Its like brand new but missing remote, and has some obvious electrical problems. Im planning an electronics update on it, too! If you can, let us know what ESC, Receiver, and motor you use!
Hi Scott, Sounds like a fantastic score. Don't worry about the missing remote. I've just completed updating mine to modern electronics using the existing NiMh cells. The proportional controls transform the truck. I'll post a video soon going through my electronics choices
When I was 7 my dad stole all of my first communion money. Later that year he got me this for my birthday and said not to bring up my communion ever again. Anyway this truck was one of my faves
Maybe someone here could help me. I'm trying to find an rc truck I had as a kid but it seems impossible since I don't remember the brand or anything. I do remember it was blue and had 8 wheels, well tires I guess instead of 4 wide tires it was 2 together to make them wide it also had 4 wheel steering and a winch. I don't believe it was a high end truck but I really don't remember anymore than that. Of someone knows the truck I'm talking about is appreciate some info. It would have been in the early 90s I believe.
I believe the truck you are inquiring for is named the Big Brutus. The truck was sold by Nikko through the 80's. If I can recall, I purchased one of the Big Brutus sometime around 1987. Unfortuneatly I never knew where it went off to, as it was a unique truck at that time. Hope this info helps U.
Jack Anapes ^ yeah I’d guess that too
One for sale at the moment: ebay.us/LWW3mf
nice
taiyo wild v8 ☺🖒
+Radio Controll System (rc taiyo fan) Thanks! I'd like to track down all the variations of this truck eventually.
Ted's RC Why not ☺ I like it also have the same as they have bought at ebay which was broken but the front grill has the lights up and no remote control and then I have rebuilt it and replaced the parts of a nikko truck 😊
Where can I get a replacement controller?
your best option is to do a hobby grade conversion. If you're absolutely keen on keeping it stock, join some of the FB groups for this truck. I'm sure people will have parts
i have the controller but the truck was left outside and roted 😩
pitty it wasn't the other way around.
Thank you tsk for not going brushless you would destroy the gears and the truck tsk brushed is where it’s at for crawling
Totally went brushless. But doesn't mean you have to drive it flat out. Check out my latest video with the winch.
Best Taiyo 4 x 4 that will give you a great time modify, two times more power and greater opportunities in the field for my channel)
I loved this truck as I kid. I still own it and recently converted the electronics and remote to traxxas after losing original remote years ago.
Brilliant! Did you post on YT?
taiyo 😊🖒
Yep sure is. Re-branded for the Australian (and other) market to Tandy/RadioShack. This website has the most information i've found on it to date rctoymemories.com/2012/11/04/tandy-radio-shack-4x4-off-roader-1985/
