Maeterlinck's symbolist drama clearly fascinated some famous composers : Faure, Debussy, Schoenberg and, here, Sibelius. As with most of his other incidental music, the composer didn't leave much in the bank when he rearranged as concert suites and yet, each time, I feel as if I'm listening to something quite different. So it is with both versions of his Pelleas but, much as I adore Beecham's account of the suite, this BIS complete edition with voice now becomes a major alternative for me.
Such wonderful music. Also intro to the TV Series 'The Sky at Night'. I have the version on another label (sorry, can't find it now), and I love it. Btw, Sibelius is always in my top 10 composers!!
Absolutely glorious. Every time I listen to almost any work of Sibelius it confirms that for me he is the greatest of all time.
I was listening to this in 1976. I went on a trip to Oregon/Washington in August of that summer. This was a mind-soundtrack. Still can't forget.

Superb work. This vocal version is fantastic...
There is just something about the themes Sibelius presents that I find compelling, even when they are similar to themes of other works.
