What's nice about this exercise is that it gives people confidence and realizes that with practice anyone can learn to draw. And I plan to try this exercise everyday, and then when i attempt to draw from life it might be easier to see things as they are. At least that is my hope
I think it’s a brilliant idea to draw upside down. I went to a class once and one lady who was a farmer wanted to draw a cow on the hill. She had never draped before. She found it really hard, until she was told to draw upside down. Then it really turned out well. Your drawing really turned out well. Also the painting. Thank you. 😊
Just me again - catching up on my commenting! I watched this as another reference for the exercise in the Line and Wash course - I'm almost up to the upside drawing lesson and figured I'd watch another example of it! It's very interesting...I just pulled out a couple pictures of my kids that I may do it with instead of this guy or the girl in the lesson! I'll let you know how I get on, of course!
I am trying to "copy" a drawing upside down. But instead of handing over to my right hemisphere my left one is only getting overwhelmed, frustrated, angry. The drawing appears to be a chore, with no fun at all. I guess it's because I have been too much focused on using my left hemisphere all my life, being a very mind-driven guy. How can I get into the desired mode of which Betty Edwards speaks? Any suggestions or strategies other than just trying to perform a task that overwhelms the left hemisphere?
I would suggest using a pen, not pencil and a continuous line (don’t take your pen off the page), put some music on, have something nice to drink and remember it is only a piece of paper
The Betty Edwards book is a real life changer. But if anyone's interested in buying it, I'd advise them to take a look inside first. There's lots of text there and a lot less illustration than in other instruction books. And…the book is very much a course with a series of exercises to do. With most art books, I roll my eyes at these but with this book you must do all the exercises. You'll be amazed at the results.
You are right. There is no magic wand. There is a lot of text and you need to follow the process, but owning a book is never going to change your skills if you don’t do it! my top tip is get an older edition. it’s been around so long you can buy it second hand for pennies, and it’s not much different from the latest version.
left handers brains are wired differently and casting my mind back to my neuro psychology lectures, some functions are transposed and some not. But, this will still work by forcing your brain to see what’s really there, not what it assumes is there.

@@LizChadertonStudio Thank you, will try this! :)
Over time, does this shape seeing improve the shape seeing and drawing when you don't draw from an upside down reference? Thank you.
I think it does. it trains your eye and brain to see shapes and relationships

His right eye glass lense looks larger than the left. Otherwise, it looks great. Good idea!
I know and You are right (and his face is too wide). The point is not perfection, it is to give you realistic skills which will really help.
How does this work if you’re left handed and already draw from the right side of my brain?
